Steve Wilks – Our New Defensive Coordinator – Good News on the Brock Purdy Front

Just heard that Brock Purdy is going ahead with the UCL repair surgery, a 6 month recovery; as opposed to the UCL replacement (TJ) surgery, an 18 month recovery. His doctor is the Texas Rangers team doctor, Keith Meister. I guess it makes sense that a baseball doctor takes care of this as these kinds of surgeries are usually in the realm of pitchers, not quarterbacks. The surgery will take place in Dallas on February 22nd as they are still allowing for the swelling in Purdy’s arm to subside.

Purdy can start throwing 3 months after the surgery, say early june, and build his arm strength back up for another 3 months, and be ready early September. The season starts on September 10th.

Good hire. Solid guy. Took a shitty Panthers team cutting players (hello CMC) and dumping salary and got them to play hard and go 6-6 to finish the season. His reward? Getting passed over for the head coaching spot. Like the Raiders after the Jon Gruden fiasco last season, Rich Bisaccia came in, directed the team to the playoffs, and was unceremoniously kicked to the curb for Prince Valiant’s drinking buddy Josh (I-suck-everywhere-I-head-coach) McDaniels.

Cue the Raiders sucking hard and missing the playoffs in 2022 despite having the best WR in the game and an offense putting up a ton of points. Couldn’t happen to a more stupid owner.

Anywho, Steve Wilks is a 4-3 guy, which of course is our base defense. He has been coaching for 28 years and had the unfortunate luck of being Josh Rosen’s head coach in AZ for one gloriously terrible season in 2018 when they went 3-13. He was the assistant Head Coach for the Panthers when their defense became all-world, and eventually lost Super Bowl 50 to the Broncos. He’s known for getting the most out of every guy he coaches, so this should be perfect fit for him and the team.

Kudos.

Here’s a good article about Wilks. This was written before he was hired by the 49ers.

Super Bowl Shmooper Bowl

I’ve gone from ‘fuck the Eagles’ to ‘fuck this game’ to ‘fuck Rihanna’ to ‘maybe I’ll ski that day’ to ‘yeah, I might watch a little’. Watching the Super Bowl after coming so close yet again to the big party really is a fucking drag. The last couple NFC championship games, plus the KC loss just make this painful beyond reason. Throw in the debacle in 2012 and you have plenty of heartbreak and sadness. The only thing that warms my heart about any of this is the fact we have beaten Dallas twice, Seattle, and Green Bay and thwarted their playoff runs.

The game? Meh. Fuck the Eagles. Say what you will about their season, it was full of creampuffs, Daniel Jones, and Josh Johnson. Pisser to it all is this season really came down to the horrible loss to Denver. With that game and we likely have the bye week instead of Philly.

But, fuck that. Can’t go down the woulda coulda shoulda route. Here’s to hoping KC smokes the Eagles and their annoying as fuck fans.

Stop Me if You’ve Heard This One Before . . .

Do we have a quarterback controversy? Whether it’s Tittle/Brodie, Brodie/Spurrier, Owen/Reed (who?), Smith/Kaepernick, Smith/Davis, now we have the threee-headed injury triumvirate of Jimmy G, Trey Lance, and Brock Purdy. And really, at some point do we call into question the blocking schemes?

But that’s a topic for a different thread. Anyhow, we DO know that Jimmy G isn’t coming back. The 49ers have 2 quarterbacks signed next year. And both Lance and Purdy are on rookie deals, so neither is a huge burden at this point. The main drag here is, Purdy’s health. He went from Mr. Irrelevant to emergency starter to #1 QB, to possibly out of the league due to his injury in 8 weeks.

I’m sure Purdy will recover, as thousands of baseball pitchers have comeback from UCL surgery, but the immediate concern is what surgery will Purdy get? The UCL reattachment is a manageable 6 month recovery. The UCL replacement is of course TJ surgery. More like an 18 month recovery.

This timeline of course dictates our future regarding the quarterback position for 2023. If the UCL replacement is needed, we can rule Josh Johnson out. And Tom Brady. Rodgers would need to be a trade, and taking on $140 mill in salary is no bueno. As is the thought of going after Derek Carr. He’s under contract for 3 more year, and we have no picks to trade with anyway.

Lamar Jackson is of course available, but that price tag will be monstrous and way too long for our need. Which is of course the same boat that Jimmy G is in. He’s waiting for a big payday, and he looks to be moving north to Seattle if I were to guess as to his destination.

So, since there aren’t any Dan Marinos or Joe Montanas just lying around waiting to sign with someone, Getting the likes of Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Teddy Bridgewater, or Andy Dalton doesn’t really warm my cockles, so I guess the answer is to draft a late-ish flier QB, and (gulp) pick up one of those stiffs to be the spot starter till Purdy comes back.

The hope against hope is that Purdy can do the reattachment rather than the replacement.

We will find out soon enough. Ouch.

What a Difference a Play Makes – DeMeco Ryans To Texans – Good News on the Injury Front

The 49ers once again are crushed by the injury bug. Sunday morning, the 49ers went from a team on the precipice of reaching their eighth Super Bowl with a surprising young QB and a very bright future to a team back to square one regarding our starting quarterback. Say what you will about the injury to Purdy and the looking for additional opinions, this injury looks very much like it will require Tommy John surgery. Which means Purdy is out for all (or most) of the 2023 season.

Which leaves us with Trey Lance as the only healthy quarterback signed for next season. Sure, he hasn’t had a proper look as a starter, but Purdy, in his rookie campaign, looked a lot more in charge of the offense than Lance has. Granted, there is a growth process for most QBs, Josh Allen springs to mind with his uneven rookie year, but this will be year 3 for Lance. He needs IMMEDIATE results to leap off the page and command this team next year if he wants to be the starter. We don’t have a big window for learning the ropes.

The 49ers are built to win it all right now with a strong defense, and a myriad of offensive weapons. Except the most important one. Can Lance do it? We don’t know. He has looked solid at times, and lost at times. Purdy was looking like Joe Jr. out there hitting quick passes and scrambling out of trouble to extend plays. Jimmy G was looking solid doing the simple task of throwing to check-downs and limiting the turnovers.

So, what do we do? Let me start off by saying no to Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. Brady might give us a decent deal, but he’s erratic and old. Rodgers is better, but he would cost a LOT more and he’s erratic, old, and crazy. Matty Ice? He’s at least very familiar with Shanahan, and is not someone that would cost too much. He wouldn’t be horrible to get as a stop-gap.

Free agents include Lamar Jackson, and Derek Carr, but I don’t think we are gonna go that route as these guys are gonna want a lot of money and extended deals. Carr intrigues the hell out of me though as he is a damn good deep passer. Aiyuk and Deebo would have big numbers with a guy like Carr playing. maybe do a one-year make-good deal?

I mean, it’s either that or we go back to Jimmy G!!!

Aaaaaaaaaaak!

And they WILL draft another QB. This kid looks pretty solid as a Purdy type guy. Not huge, but he makes all the throws accurately. Jake Haener from Fresno St.

Crash & Burn

It was over nearly when it started. After the non-catch by DeVonta Smith catch wasn’t contested, and Philly got their gift TD, Purdy went out in his first series as unblocked LB Hassan Reddick smashed into Purdy’s arm as he tried to throw a pass. Fortuna being a fickle bitch, the play added insult to the injury as the play was a fumble, not a pass. Josh Journeyman Johnson lived down to his name and was ineffective until he himself was knocked out of the game in the 3rd quarter.

Crap end to a great season.

Still and all, despite yet another NFCCG loss (we lead the NFL in that category with 10), we have found our QB of the future in Brock Purdy.

But even that is in question as Purdy’s arm injury very well could be a ruptured ulnar ligament, which would require Tommy John surgery and a likely stint on the IR for next year. His MRI is going on now, so we will know later today what his recovery will be.

Other than that, It’s another off-season of close-but-no-cigar.

As it goes I really hope KC takes it to the Eagles and stomps them flat.

This article came out before the Cowboys game. From Caesar’s Sports Book head bookie Adam Pullen.

“Despite losing Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo — their first- and second-string quarterbacks — to injuries earlier in the season, San Francisco has emerged as a real Super Bowl contender under rookie quarterback Brock Purdy. The 49ers secured the No. 2 seed in the NFC and easily dismantled the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Wild-Card Round.

Vegas now finds themselves in a sticky situation as they face the possibility of dealing with the consequences of that drastic change.

Caesars specifically listed the 49ers as high as +1600 earlier in the season. As of Friday, that number had dropped as low as +380, behind only the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

Brocky – NFCCG Day!!

We all remember the movie where the plucky underdog from out of nowhere takes on the champ and wins the heavyweight crown (well, it was a split decision, but I ain’t letting that get in the way). Rocky. Fitting that this game is in Philly as here we are is 2023 and we have Brocky. The plucky underdog QB drafted with the last pick of the 2022 draft coming from out of nowhere and deep on the bench to lead his team to the Super Bowl. Cue the Rocky theme.

The offense is a healthy as it has been all year, the defense is playing at a very high level, and even the play calling and coaching, minus a few issues with time management, is on point.

Philly though has something we struggle with, and that’s a mobile QB. I wonder if we go zone underneath to spy Hurts and his scrambles. It could leave guys open short, but it could save the 15 yard broken contain runs. Then again, they have 2 WRs with 183 catches and 2,694 yards in DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown, and their own 1,000 yard rusher in Miles Sanders.

Then again with a 17 game schedule, everyone has something close to this.

For all the offensive firepower, this game will be won in the trenches. One thing the team cannot do is overcommit to play action fakes, and misdirection runs. Our safeties Hufanga and Gipson and LBs need to stay home on bootlegs and sweeps and keep the edges tight. Philly gets a ton of yards on those plays.

Play clean, force a turnover or two, and we are moving on.

Frying Pan, Meet Fire

Here we go. One step from the Super Bowl. Again. Last year’ loss was crushing. This one would be equally so, despite in improbability of Mr. Irrelevant catapulting himself into the drivers’ seat of this high-performance offensive machine. The thinking is, Purdy has plenty of time to gain his footing, but as we all know, these windows can slam shut and lock tight at a moment’s notice.

Just ask the 5-12 Rams.

Yes, we have a solid team in all phases, but so does Philly. Games like these have a tendency to turn on fluke plays or the inadvertent turnover. Last week, Dak Prescott did us a solid by throwing 2 poorly timed picks. We only got 6 off them, but returned the favor with a fumbled punt by Ray Ray McCloud that gave Dallas 3 despite the great field position.

It very well could turn on a kickoff return. Something that nearly bit us last week, and a few other times this year. Gould either needs to get more touchbacks, or our coverage needs to lock in. There have been too many lapses. Despite Ray Ray’s fumble, the return teams have been solid.

Despite Philly’s top 3 defense, teams have scored on them. Washington used their run game to keep their high scoring offense off the field, and Dallas put 40 (and 420 yards) on them not too long ago. Amazingly, it was Gardner Minshew that put up 34 on that Dallas’ defense. I want the quick passing game used early and often to get the LBs on their heels and worrying about covering guys to open up running plays. We need to run misdirection plays as they play so well straight up.

I am glad that Purdy has the Seattle win under his bet as at least he’s shown he can win in a very hostile environment, and they don’t get much worse than Seattle. And he single-handedly took Iowa State to relevance in his time as a 4-year starter there. With Brock gone, and before he got there, they’ve sucked.

State of the Team – State of the Mind

Looks like the team is in as good of shape as they have been in a while. Legal issues notwithstanding for Charles Omenihu, who was arrested for suspicion of domestic battery against his girlfriend. He allegedly shoved her to the ground.

The team of course is “in the process of gathering further information” and the league said “The matter will be reviewed under the league’s personal conduct policy,” the NFL’s statement read. “There is no change to his status.”

So, by hook or by crook, he’s likely gonna play until otherwise told he can’t, whether by the team or by the league. Chances are any court appearances will be held after the season ends, so the point is moot. Though this shot usually doesn’t turn out well for the guy.

Derp. Bad timing, skippy.

Other than that, both CMC and Elijah Mitchell were banged up in the Dallas game. McCaffrey with a calf strain, and Mitchell with a groin injury. Both are expected to play however. Omenihu also had an oblique strain during the game but came back.

Philly’s main concern is CB Avonte Maddox. He’s been out since week 16 with a toe injury. Still and all, it didn’t seem to slow down their coverage against the Giants. Although Rick (Holiday Inn) James had a decent day with 7 catches for 51 yards, and Matt (Cheetah) Brieda had NY’s only TD.

So, how do we win? Well, the Washington Generals showed the way. Limit Hurts’s scrambles, stop their run game, and do some running of our own. Washington ran for 160 on them, the Bears (!) dropped 160 yards on the ground against them but they lost, the Cowboys dropped 120 on them (+ 350 in the air and 40 points), and the Saints put 140 on them in Philly’s last few losses.

So, the team we just beat put 40 on their defense. And that was Gardner Minshew that carved them up. Can we do that? It’s possible. I don’t think it’ll be that high-scoring, but I think we can attack their defense with quick passes and misdirection runs. What’s interesting to me is the Niners last week went away from passing on 1st down, and I think it slowed down the offense in the 1st half.

I would LOVE to see us be able to establish the run early, but I’m still of a mind that we do that by passing on 1st down. Shanahan has spent so much of the season running on 1st that teams play us to do it still. I think with CMC as a checkdown, we can effectively get into 2nd and short situations and run for a lot of 1st downs.

And I also have the Bengals beating the injured Chiefs. Cincy came through pretty strong beating Buffalo in Buffalo.

NFC Championship Game! Down Goes Dallas!

Well, that was certainly a knock-down drag-out game for the defenses. Much can be said about this game and the plays the defense made, but the game pretty much came down to a one-handed juggling stumbling 30 yard reception by George Kittle late in the 3rd quarter to finally get the Niner offense going. After that play, the run game finally got some traction, and the team was able to finally get into the end zone to get on top 16-9.

Say what you will about the ineffective offenses, both these defenses came to play. And the DBs came up with a couple huge interceptions at opportune times. Sure, those picks only garnered 6 points, we needed every one of those points. Demo Lenoir has been targeted a lot in recent weeks, but he’s the one with 2 INTs in this postseason. Jimmie Ward also broke up a pass that was caught by one of the defensive standouts, Fred Warner.

Brock had a gutty game facing pressure nearly every drop-back, and with stifling coverages, did just enough to get the team into FG range on a couple of early drives. Dallas did get their TD early in the 2nd quarter mixing runs, passes and an 11 yard scramble for an early 6-3 lead. Funny, I think Maher misses the XP even if Ebukam doesn’t block it. But Purdy, in his usual style, did not turn the ball over. Albeit a dropped pick by Diggs was a huge help. Dallas did a good job of stopping the run game for about 2-1/2 quarters, and our early drives were stopped. Lenoir’s pick set us up in prime territory, but couldn’t get it in despite being on their 21. Next drive stalled at our 29 for another FG and a 6-6 tie.

Dallas gave the Niners another shot when Dak threw a ball right to Jimmie Ward that he deflected to Warner, and we kept Dallas from scoring and turned into a 3 point lead.

Still and all, Shanahan can’t seem to get out of his own way. On that drive before halftime, he wasted 26 seconds on a 3rd and 1 because in his words, he didn’t want to give Dallas time to mount a drive of their own. The problem there is WE were driving the ball. Fail on the 3rd and 1 and the Niners punt and Dallas gets the ball on their 15 with 35 seconds and 1 timeout. While WE had the ball, 56 seconds left, TWO timeouts, and the ball on our 38 yard line. Much more favorable conditions.

Instead, Shanny ran the clock down, we barely got into FG range, and nearly blew it anyway by running one more unnecessary play with 7 seconds left. Gould made the 50 yarder, and we took the lead, but coaching in the playoffs you NEED to go for the throat when you are driving the ball. Shanahan has been doing a good job calling plays and getting the most out of our opportunities, but that one really pissed me off. It shows a lack of faith in the offense.

But, we got through the game fairly unscathed, and now will be flying to Philly. Our third NFC Championship game in 4 years. This is gonna be another tough one.

Here We GO!!! NFCCG or Bust!

This is looking a little tougher than I originally thought, but I still think we have the horse to get this done. Philly in their house will not be easy, but first things first. The Cowboys have a short week and a day of travel to deal with. We are rested and ready.

That being said, this team needs to start faster than they have recently. The last few games have been slow starts followed by better play. The Niners need to get on top of these guys early to force the action and make them play catch-up.

As usual, it is about the pass rush. Dallas did a lot of quick passes against the Bucs and that looks like the best way to thwart our pass rush. The DBs are in for a challenge as they have been getting a little burnt around the edges lately. But those longer plays need to be stopped by getting in Dak’s face and hurrying his passes.

The offense took a little bit, but if we can come out clicking, we should be able to draw blood first. The team is hopefully not gonna come out slow and caught unawares like Seattle and the Raiders. Purdy has a solid grtasp of how to move the ball. The run game would really help the cause.
