The 49ers once again are crushed by the injury bug. Sunday morning, the 49ers went from a team on the precipice of reaching their eighth Super Bowl with a surprising young QB and a very bright future to a team back to square one regarding our starting quarterback. Say what you will about the injury to Purdy and the looking for additional opinions, this injury looks very much like it will require Tommy John surgery. Which means Purdy is out for all (or most) of the 2023 season.
Which leaves us with Trey Lance as the only healthy quarterback signed for next season. Sure, he hasn’t had a proper look as a starter, but Purdy, in his rookie campaign, looked a lot more in charge of the offense than Lance has. Granted, there is a growth process for most QBs, Josh Allen springs to mind with his uneven rookie year, but this will be year 3 for Lance. He needs IMMEDIATE results to leap off the page and command this team next year if he wants to be the starter. We don’t have a big window for learning the ropes.
The 49ers are built to win it all right now with a strong defense, and a myriad of offensive weapons. Except the most important one. Can Lance do it? We don’t know. He has looked solid at times, and lost at times. Purdy was looking like Joe Jr. out there hitting quick passes and scrambling out of trouble to extend plays. Jimmy G was looking solid doing the simple task of throwing to check-downs and limiting the turnovers.
So, what do we do? Let me start off by saying no to Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. Brady might give us a decent deal, but he’s erratic and old. Rodgers is better, but he would cost a LOT more and he’s erratic, old, and crazy. Matty Ice? He’s at least very familiar with Shanahan, and is not someone that would cost too much. He wouldn’t be horrible to get as a stop-gap.
Free agents include Lamar Jackson, and Derek Carr, but I don’t think we are gonna go that route as these guys are gonna want a lot of money and extended deals. Carr intrigues the hell out of me though as he is a damn good deep passer. Aiyuk and Deebo would have big numbers with a guy like Carr playing. maybe do a one-year make-good deal?
I mean, it’s either that or we go back to Jimmy G!!!
Aaaaaaaaaaak!
And they WILL draft another QB. This kid looks pretty solid as a Purdy type guy. Not huge, but he makes all the throws accurately. Jake Haener from Fresno St.
Repost.
Heck of a year again and they found a viable QB in Purdy. Still unknown with Lance, but those two are QB 1 and 2. Jimmy G is out.
I’m a big Shanny fan, very smart dude, but facts are facts, the 9ers had 4 QB’s injured in 1 season. Shanny exposes his QB’s to too high a risk factor with some of his schemes/playcalls.
He points to other coaches around the league using their QB in similar fashion, which is all well and good, but the fact remains he lost 4 in 1 season. I don’t know what more evidence he needs to see to start taking better care of the most important player on the team.
Using a 3rd string tight end to block one on one with one of the leagues most ferocious
pass rushers has ugly written all over it. Yes 20/20 hindsight is easy, but IMO that had a very high chance of at least being a sack. As it turned out Purdy is done for at least 6 months and maybe is never the same again.
Shanny really needs to re-evaluate the risk/reward percentage and factor that in moving forward. I think they have had an injury to the QB every year he has been HC. Is Jimmy G really made of glass or is some of it that he was exposed to too high of a risk with the scheme/playcall?
I would guess it’s some of each, but running Lance between the tackles 2 years in a row had the same result.
Hopefully he makes a few adjustments to better protect the QB moving forward. I would hope John Lynch makes some noise about it and soon.
Trey Lance’s injury was the epitome of stupid. But Jimmy G’s injury was the result of a scramble after the WRs were covered, and Purdy’s was just unfortunate. Sure, you want a better result in the blocking, but guys get free on blitzes all the time and QBs get sacked.
That being said, we need improvement on the O line. I’d look for a FA RT, and a backup LT. Williams is gonna miss a game most likely. We need depth and consistency across the line.
It’s actually QB Jake Haener the son of KTVU Anchor Julie Haener from Danville. He definitely has skills, good accuracy, decision making, a bit undersized 6’1 200 lbs ( then again so is Purdy) transferred from Washington to Fresno St, put up nice numbers.Anaylst Todd McShay thinks he could be a real sleeper and moving up boards in possible day 2-3 draft anywhere from 4th rd are lower.. He will be in action in the Senior Bowl coming up this weekend?to check him out..
Definitely a Big Fat No on Matt Ryan he’s a bum and should just retire, he has nothing left and was Benched TWICE last year with these shit numbers in 12 games…14 TD’s 13 INT and 15 FUMBLES time to go in the TV booth Matt!!
No way! Didn’t know that. Pretty cool.
I’m sure Shanny thinks he can save Private Ryan. I don’t know. A lot depends on how Purdy’s recovery goes. If they have Purdy/Lance – 1/2 then they can draft #3.
All Lance has to do is hit the short to medium throw at some level of consistency. Unfortunately he hasn’t show he can do it. Otherwise I tend to agree with you, Chuck. No to Brady and Rodgers – they both looked washed this year. Shoring up the OL is a need but Banks and Burford showed well so slightly less to worry about. No idea re Brendel
What do you think of all the FAs? Seems like bringing back Gould and as many of the D linemen possible at a reasonable price should be priority. Maybe try to keep Brunskill and McKivitz but otherwise the rest are probably priced out on a lot of guys hitting the FA market. I hope they figure something out to extend Jennings whose ERFA – love his game.
Ryans hired by the Houstons.
Musta got a good settlement from them back in the day.
Speaking of free agents . . .
The blatantly obvious ones to leave are Jimmy G, Josh Johnson, and Jason Verrett. Omenihu may have shoved his way off the team given that we have a lot of DL guys that are his equal.
I would keep Ward, Moseley, Jennings, Al-Shaair, Ebukam, Gipson, Brunskill, Pepper, McGlinchey (but find a replacement), and Brendel (find a replacement as well) at a minimum.
Gould, Willis, Dwelley, Flan-Fowles, and Givens all played very well and we should do what we can to keep them. Gould not being able to get touchbacks has been bothersome, but his unblemished playoff record is pretty amazing.
The fence guys are Ridgeway, McKivitz, Hurst, Hyder, Moore, and Kroft. All should be replaceable easily enough.
Moore played pretty well at times so maybe I move him up the list for depth.
I like Ward but his recent comments indicate he already has one foot out the door. Besides, he seems to fall into that let em go one year too early instead of a year too late category imo.
Yeah, haven’t heard anything either way, but I can live with Moore playing slot CB. As long as we use one of our few picks on a a CB.
Well, hold my horses. Purdy is undergoing surgery today to fix his ulnar collateral ligament. He is NOT going to get the ulnar replacement (TJ) surgery, so that’s great news. He should be ready by late July if all goes well.
49ers’ Brock Purdy: Tears UCL, set for surgery
Rotowire JAN 30, 2023
Purdy is slated for surgery on his right elbow after suffering a complete tear of his UCL during Sunday’s NFC Championship Game loss at Philadelphia, and the 49ers hope he’ll be healthy by training camp, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Haener, huh? Yeah I saw this guy do very well last couple years in Mtn West conference, but I despise Fresno St.. Grab a vet let Griese help Lance and wait for Purdy to regain health and arm strength. Make sure both lines are strong.
I think Ward is looking for a longer contract than we would probably give. Maybe we could keep him on a 2 year deal if the money is right. Every GM in the league is gonna be looking for the next Purdy, they don’t come around very often. Not sure but are we getting another 3rd for Ryans?
Yep.
Welp, it turns out I’m a mediocrity and failure.
Good to know, skippy. Keep up the good work.
J Ward IS 31. He’s getting a little bit old. If they can keep him on a short deal, that would be fine. He is a good slot corner now. We need to draft CB depth.
I’m fine with the left side of the line with of course All Pro Trent Williams and Aaron Banks who really played great imo.But the right side( besides an improving Burford a keeper)it’s the center Brendel and McGlinchey that is killing them! All 4 QB’s were hurt from the right side of the line under McGlinchey’s terrible play which isn’t a coincidence to me.(Though it was TE Kroft that got Purdy killed só I’ll make it 3QB’s.And why was he in anyway in a bad matchup and totally blew his feeble blocking attempt?
They need to upgrade the RT thru FÃ, Draft are trade!
whoa, thanks man. What a monster debut LP that was…Fire Foxey Lady
Manic Depression Wind Cries Mary Hey Joe et al. Red House was on UK release. 55 years old, I could listen to it all day.

With DC Vic Fangio now off the market agreeing with the Dolphins which is ok cause I don’t buy into the 3-4 defense which he prefers, when the Niners are killing it with the 4-3 Defense..
I kinda have my doubts the Niners will go internally with Jason Kouroek?(sp) are anyone else on the staff.Kouroek seems content being the D Line coach so don’t mess that up!My choice for DC would be Steve Wilks the former interim Coach with the Panthers who actually did a good job going 6-6 with a pathetic Panthers team.He would thrive under with the talent the 49ers have and he’s a 4-3 defensive minded coach so no major changes needed..
