Game Day 14 – Crunch Time

We are getting to the crux of the season here. The Niners can hit these playoffs anywhere from the 1 seed to on down to the outside looking in. I don’t see either happening, but winning the West is the main goal. Green Bay has a little easier time of it, and they may very well pass the Niners for the 2 seed. Seattle likely wins as well tomorrow, so the Seahawks game next week could very well determine the west should the Niners lose tomorrow. I think  they win, for some crazy reason. I think Kappy has a big game, and I think the defense does well enough to slow Brady and co.

I hope these guys worked on using the speed they suddenly have out there since AJ and LMJ look to get a lot more field time with Hunter, KW, and Manningham out. I would love to see more screens and passes to the flat to give these guys the ball with some green around them.  If NE plays it like Miami and St Louis did, the slants will be there. Take a few shots with Randy and AJ, use the speed. Defensively? Well, the hope is we don’t start slow, as NE can jump on you pretty fast and throw up a 21 spot in short order. That being said, how is a good question. The Niners worked over GB pretty good with their base D. They didn’t do as well vs Minn and the Giants.  They will likely have to throw some blitzes in despite the risk of getting burned.

Well, I see Brady throwing 40-50 times- when Seattle beat them, he was intercepted twice, 2 of his 4 for the year..That game also exposed their secondary, and some typically stupid game and clock decisions by the Best Coach on the Planet. I’d like to see Kap look deep and our defense keep everything in front of them-yeah, sort of a prevent, but lay the wood on the squirts- Welker and Woodhead. Also, there’s been success disguising coverages, moving around pre-snap, faking the blitz and dropping back, anything to make it hard on Brady deciding on check offs. And take advantage of the inevitable fuck up from Bellyache.

  2. barleyfreak's avatar barleyfreak says:

Sando says that with Manningham out, the primary beneficiary in added playing time is Delanie Walker. I’m trying to contain my excitement. When your number 2 WR goes out with injury and is replaced with a TE, then WR is clearly an area that could use some improvement. I probably wouldn’t rag on Walker if his catch/drop ratio was better.

It’s going to be wet and slippery in MA tonight. Rain/sleet, IMO that heavily favors the short passing game, not the running game. I see a lot of slipping on the part of RBs. We can take some shots down field but the OL has to have a better game pass protecting.

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Sando doesn’t know what he’s talking about. But Walker has gotten some med to deep looks recently. Hey, if it works, i don’t care who’s getting the ball, just as long as they catch it.

    • barleyfreak's avatar barleyfreak says:

He’s got numbers to back it up:

“Mario Manningham has a shoulder injury and will not play against New England. That probably means additional snaps for second tight end Delanie Walker. Walker has set season highs for playing time in the two games Manningham missed previously. He was at 68.3 percent or higher in both. Walker has played 54.5 percent for the season. “

  4. NoFear49er's avatar NoFear49er says:

This would be a great game to get Vernon involved in the offense again. If they get up more than ten points on us it would be a good game to show why we made the switch at QB, too.

  5. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

See that Denver vs Ravens score, that will be the half time score of the Niner game only it will be NE 17- 0

  6. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

And you see what the Ravens just did!!! They PASSED the BALL DOWN THE FIELD!!! Hope Jimbo is watching his brothers team!!!

  7. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Of course that is probably what the Niners will end up with too!! 3 points

  8. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

I find it disheartening that other teams have WR’s that get passed the 1st down marker to catch passes.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I find it really disheartening that other teams have QB’s named: Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Romo, Big Ben, Luck…

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Throwing in the towel a little early eh?

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Using the Ravens as an example of anything ain’t a very good idea either. 24-3?

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

No help from the Bears. As of yet. After scoring 7 early, Cutler and the Bears are flailing.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I don’t really get the disappearance of VD either. Walker is getting a lot of looks though. I want to see Jenkins, LMJ, and the newfound speed. Outside shit (screens, sweeps, delays) should work on these guys.

    • NoFear49er's avatar NoFear49er says:

Vernon hasn’t been a part of the offense since the Chicago game where he was the top receiver by far with 8 targets and 83 yds and a TD on 6 receptions. How do you leave a weapon like that out of your game plan for the following three weeks?

  13. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Dennis the problem is not the QB. The problem is the Niner coaching staff still believe in the run!! All those QB’s you named, all of their game plans call for passes down the field. Why the hell did they pick up Moss??? Really, why???

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

GB with a monster brain fart . . . gotta love that.

  15. NoFear49er's avatar NoFear49er says:

Green Bay playing without a kicker decides to let Chicago back in the game. I think Roman might have called that play in.

  16. Elmo's avatar Elmo says:

How many years have you been an offense coordinator kev? You think you know better than Roman and Harbaugh? Relax and enjoy the game.

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Cutler tries to give it back.

  18. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Defending SB champs not doing so good

  19. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Alshon Jeffrey with his second offensive PI to negate a big gain. This is the same boob who punched the guy early in his bowl game last year was ejected in the biggest game of his life. Once a mook always a mook.

  20. 12th man's avatar 12th man says:

GB got away with PI to take over on downs.

  21. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Wow. GB getting all the calls.

  22. 12th man's avatar 12th man says:

So the good news was the Giants ate shit, big time.

  23. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Great punt by GB to nail CHI. Cutler gets sacked when GB only rushed two. We lose tonight and we can say goodbye to the bye. We’ll be the 3 seed at best. We might end up playing the Bears in the first round. That’s just as good as a bye.

    • NoFear49er's avatar NoFear49er says:

WTF was that sack on Cutler? Not even a numbnuts rookie takes that sack. Chicago better cut their losses on that huge deal they made for him and get someone under center that plays to win.

  24. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Pressure’s on the Niners for the 2 seed. The Giants got shellacked by the Falcons 34-0.

  25. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

NYG and TB both get shutout today. Lost by combined scores of 75-0. Ouch.

  26. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Flacco was brutal today. Glad I didn’t start his ass.

  27. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Fucking M Rob making plays for SEA. They’re hitting their stride at the right time.
    Fuck Pete.

  28. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Wonder if NE is due a let-down. GOt to jump these guys and bury them.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I’ve been telling Berger all week that I think we start out fast and get the jump on these guys. Have the halftime lead, maybe even after three. It’s Brady in the 4th quarter that worries me…

  29. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

212 yds for Peterson today vs the Rams. He’s on his way to passing up Eric the Dick.

  30. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

I don’t understand how the Giants are 8-6 and got blown out today 34-0. They certainly look good when they play us…….

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

The Falcons lost to Carol last week. Ya just never know.

My theory is the Pats are due a stinker game. We’re just the guys to give ’em a beat-down.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Well, the one this year was Smith’s worst game since Harbaugh got here. We beat them last year, and we all know about the championship game.

  31. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

How is this Raider game being televised? It looks like there’s about 10,000 people there…..

  32. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Shit. The Raiders sold this game out? Anything but this . . .

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

It’s not sold out. The Raiders make use of the new 85% minimum sold rule to avoid the blackout. The penalty there is they have to give up more revenue to the visiting team to have their game shown locally.

  33. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Seattle is up 14 zip. Why the fuck are they playing in Canada?

  34. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

And why the hell am I not watching Pittsburgh/Dallas? Buff scores. 14-7.

  35. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Pete the Cheat using some “trickeration” north of the border for a big gain.

  36. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I don’t feel sorry for many NFL players, but Larry Fitzgerald has been marginalized by the stable of ARZ quarterbacks. Ken Whisenhunt will be updating his résumé when the year’s over…

    Good morning games, afternoon sucks.

  38. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Latest game time forecast for Foxborough: 36 degrees with 80% chance of rain.

  39. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

He may be a rapist, but Big Ben makes up for it by being a better QB and nobody cares. “Only in America!”

  40. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

The Chargers should just firer Norv after this debacle and be done with it.
Pathetic effort by his team today.

  41. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Peyton Manning won his ninth consecutive game today. Alex Smith? He filled his ninth consecutive Gatorade bucket without a spill. Go Alex!

  42. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

God, I hope it’s raining. That might slow Brady down a bit, maybe have them run more often. And it would be ALLLLL good with Kap dashing up and down the field. I’m doing a rain dance as I’m typing this!!!!!!

  43. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Up 47-17, Pete the Cheat runs a fake punt with M Rob. Carroll is just asking to get whacked.

  44. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

The Raiders are blowing their shot at the worst record in the league. And I picked them to win the west.

  45. Winder's avatar Winder says:

If we got anything up our sleeve we should pull it out today. I think the rain just might helpNE since Brady does that quick read shit so well.

  46. 12th man's avatar 12th man says:

Squawks have 50 on the board.

  47. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

36 degrees in Foxborough sounds lucky to me. Reminds me of Paul Hofer, #36. He was by and far my favorite Niner. Not only did I name my black Lab after him, but I took his name at Confirmation. That’s either some serious devotion or borderline psychotic behavior. I’ll ask my therapist next Wednesday what she thinks.

  48. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

#16, and I have special place in my football heart for #12 and I don’t mean Trent Dilfer.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I know I’ve mentioned this many a times before, but my first game was John Brodie’s last. But my favorite QB as a youngster was Steve Spurrier. Go figure.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I haven’t checked our FF matchup, I’m superstitious that way. Do you have Adrian Peterson? If so, I’m screwed. What i tell ya about Kirk Cousins. 300+ yds and 2 TDs. Great game for the Spartan rookie.

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

You’re winning but I have to keep my Pats guys in to beat you.
I wasn’t paying much attention yesterday to bench them.
Tough tough choice here, but I least I have no Cowboys on my team.

      • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Yeah, I know. But Romo, Dez and Witten have been a winning trifecta for me throughout the year. I gotta ride those three ponies to the wire…

  49. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Have a shitty day Matthew Stafford. 102 yd pick 6 for ARZ. Jim Schwartz is another guy who I think should be shit-canned.

  50. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Knowshon Moreno is my MVP today. He fumbled on his second carry. Fox wouldn’t even activate him for the next 8 games.
He’s been unreal. A running attack sure is nice.

  51. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

This PIT/DAL game is a doozy. All the makings of fantastic finish. HUGE playoff implications for both teams…

  52. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Baltimore will be drafting a QB high. Flacco threw a HS pass returned for a 98 yard TD. They were behind, and even after that it was still a game.
But those sideline cameras don’t lie. He broke every rule in Joe Montana’s book.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I believe you’re right, Rufus. Flacco is a FA next year. Seriously don’t see the Ravens re-signing him next season…

      • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

But having said that, the QB class in next year’s draft is beyond weak. Good luck finding yourself a new savior…

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

And now OT. The Coyotes are toast. I didn’t replace RG on principle, BTW. The guy is great and he plays on my team from the bench if he has to.

  53. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Wow. Worthlessberger looked like Flacco on that play.

  54. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Freak you, Dennis. But congrats for the win in the playoffs.
Gawd I hate the Cowboys. The Steelers aren’t very far behind, so I cry crocodile tears.
    Now, THE REAL GAME.

  55. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Don’t think it happens, but thw Giants could very well exit the playoff race. They go to a very angry Baltimore next week.

  56. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Plus they fall to 3rd place as it is right now due to tiebreaking scenarios.

THe Niners HAVE to win this game to stay out of the wildcrad mess.

Carroll is DYYYYYYYYYING to beat Harbaugh. He hasn’t done it as a pro yet. To take over the west lead? Criminy. GOT to win this..

  57. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Phil, as usual, my pick comes in just under the wire…Our Niners jump out to the early lead. Pats look a little hungover from their big win > Houston last Monday. The short week doesn’t help their causes any. We lead early, at the half and starting the 4th quarter…but that’s where Mr. Brady steps turns into Mr. President. LaMichael James scores on a long run and/or pass catch, but it’s not enough.
