Word is now that the deal is off between Denver and San Francisco on dealing the enigmatic quandary that is Colin Kaepernick. Kappy won’t take a $5 million pay cut, and the team isn’t willing to eat that much salary either, so here we sit. With a QB that is getting paid $12 mill, and who may or may not even be our starter. Frankly I’m shocked that Kappy didn’t split. If he wants to stick it to the 49ers, his best bet would be to leave and take Denver on a nice playoff run as he worked to rehab his image in a new town.
As it is here, well, he DOES have a chance to do the same here. As in rehab a tarnished image. Chip’s style of go-go offense would seem to be suited for Colin’s game. And Chip likes athletic QBs that can move. A match made in heaven, right? Yeah, right. It comes back to the QB competition between Gabby and Kappy this preseason. And if Kappy can’t beat out the likes of Blaine Gabbert, then he’s mailing it in for a seat on the bench. A la RG III last year. And we all saw how that worked out for RG III. Back up money on a desperate team.
I don’t get this at all. Alex Smith didn’t want to leave here as well, even though he had plenty of opportunity, albeit for much different reasons. Kappy? I have no idea. He came into the league as a humble man-child who was honored to be here., and in the NFL Now he’s guarded and arrogant, hiding behind a surly and off-putting attitude. I blame Harbaugh.
Seriously though, I don’t get the thought process behind this. Kaepernick had the opportunity to go to the defending Super Bowl champs and pretty much be handed the starting job. Play well, and he likely gets a restructured deal for his make-good year in Denver. Instead, he comes back to a team that he (apparently) alienated due to his actions in the clubhouse. He has a tough row to hoe here, and the chance that he puts this team on his back and carries it to the playoffs (or even respectability) is a long shot. Here’s the story:

All that being said, maybe this is a ploy by Kappy to get more from Denver salary-wise. Certainly in the realm of possibility.
Kap is a Harbaugh guy and wasn’t happy with being told he’d have to compete for the job next year. He wants to explore his options hence my

If I were Kap I sure would like to get out of Santa Clara. His agent probably is advising him to hold firm on the salary forcing the Niners to pay part of it if he eventually lands in Denver. Damn this stuff gives me a headache! I’ve got enough trouble thinking about taxes.

If Kaepernick thinks he should be just handed the starting job, he’s nuts. Gabbert ain’t much, but at least he tries. Kappy needs to step away from the attitude.
What if you’re Kap and you are starting to question your ability to succeed in this league. maybe something mental is going on, it sure looked like it with some of those throws last year. If either or both is the case, and you’re Kap, then you want to get every cent possible. Could be the last deal he sees as a pro.
Who knows what’s really going on behind the scene? I don’t see how this could have been mishandled any worse. Total circus.
Seeing how far he got a couple years ago, I don’t think that’s a factor, but who knows?
RG III’s demise, or at least decline, has a lot to do with his injuries.
Kappy’s? Coaching? System? Brain? Being drilled out of what made him successful? There are a ton of factors that are in play, but I thought he’d jump at the opportunity to get the fuck out. I mea, I get that Alex Smith wanted to stay to silence the detractors and to live up to the deal he signed. Kappy? I get no sense that he feels any love toward the front office, the coaches, or even his teammates.
Oh well. This may be his last best shot, but this team is in a shambles as it is. There’s little chance for success no matter what he does. So much of the success of this team is dependent on this draft that you get the idea that it is a pipe-dream. I mean shit, he could be the QB of the reigning Super Bowl champs.

Chuck, this all comes down to Kaep being a ‘system’ fit.
He worked with the Harbaugh ‘run first’ approach.
He’s not a ‘see it/exploit it’ QB.
Chip will require a quick trigger guy with accuracy.
2 things Kaep is challenged with.
He and his Reps appear to want their cake and, eat it too.
There’s some major dysfunction at play within the Kaep Camp.

This isn’t over by any stretch of the imagination.
Hard sell to a team with no Cap space to play with in Denver.
Cleveland had money, however they weren’t willing to meet the current Contract either.
They seem to want out of SF but aren’t willing to make any concessions to do it,
Then, there’s the compensation angle, which Baalke controls.
Kap signed a historically bad contract (for him) and expected the team to use money he left on the table to keep his fav players. I didn’t happen and was naive in the extreme for him to believe it would. I said at that time the contract would come back to bite both parties, the Niners for being greedy and Kap for being stupid once he figured it out. His agents are horrible.
After not playing very well last year he got benched, but really believed there was a hot market for him outside of the Niners. He was after all 5 yards shy of being a SB champ QB.
This off season must be humbling for him, he is offered very low end starting money and now knows exactly how the league views him.

I had thought it would be 50/50 stay or go. I think that has changed in favor of staying because of the money and more importantly to him the perceived lack of respect for his abilities.
If I were a betting man I’d say he stays and beats out Gabbert for the starting position and now having written that he will be instantly traded.
Right 12 th great point about the deal. This was all about testing the market. Kap will be fully committed to winning the starting job and leading this team when he gets back . Kap will win the job and be our starter which is great news because IMHO he is our best shot at getting somewhere any time soon.
Agree Rob. A draft pick QB won’t have an impact quickly, if at all. I liked Gabbert in terms of management but what he showed last year was he doesn’t have the balls to win games, he was Alex Smith on steroids with his check downs. Almost every critical moment in a drive, he failed.
That leaves Kap and some scrubs. Kap IMO lost confidence in the Niners organization as well as the coaching and probably rightfully so.
They had some late defections that put the Oline behind the 8 ball and Baalke overestimated the guys he had and the ones he brought in and Kap was lost.
He is talented, but as many have said, he needs a good supporting cast and a scheme he can fit into to flourish. Who knows what Kelly can do but Kap is the best QB on the roster, and even if they use the first pick on a QB, it is long odds against the rookie being more effective than Kap out of the gate.

The 49ers may be willing to pay a portion of Kaepernick’s salary with Denver, but not $4.9 million of it, unless the Broncos improve their trade offer, which is believed to be a mid-round pick. The Broncos have made it evident they don’t value Kaepernick on his current deal. The quarterback, in turn, is making it known he doesn’t have a problem making his full salary for 2016 with San Francisco. Kappy meanwhile has stated he would accept a pay cut to go to Denver, but not the drastic one proposed by them.
There you have it. Plenty of wiggle room all around this.

NJ, Kappy isn’t unhappy with the contract. He’s unhappy at the underhanded whisper campaign that this front office engaged in last year, and is very adept at. Leaking reports that he’s ‘on an island’ and the other players think he’s full of himself, the Nessa situation, yadda yadda yadda.
This isn’t about the contract. He wants starter money in Denver. He’s in much the situation Harbaugh was in at the end. The front office was bad-mouthing him through leaks and innuendo, his stock was dropping, yet he wanted the big money. Kappy just wants it somewhere else.
Here’s something I’ve suspected all along. It also gives rise to the intellectual capacity of our brethren at the kiddie site . . .
