Thanks to Grace Slick for that. Well, it wasn’t the 1981 NFC Championship game victory, or even a regular season victory. But it did mark the first win of the newly installed coaching staff. Preseason makes it meaningless, sure. But the trends from last week kept up yesterday.
No clock management issues. Solid D line play, solid run blocking, a little better pressure on the QB from the pass rush, and another exemplary performance from the man from down under. Granted, Dallas didn’t play Dez or Witten, and Tony Regular Season only played one series (1-1 for -1), but the Niner run defense was stout, and the pass defense was good. 3 picks, and they could have had a couple more. I think Dallas is really going to miss Demarco Murray. And their O line is a mess already. The running back by committee isn’t looking good.
Plusses were definitely seeing Navorro Bowman out there making plays. 3 plays, 3 tackles, 2 TFLs. Dockett played as well, so that was good to see. Kappy had one nice drive. Comverting a 3rd down on a pass to his secondary WR, Carlos Hyde. What a concept. A back out of the backfield. He had a TD pass to T Smith broken up on a nice defensive play to end that drive. The next drive was a sack that Kappy didn’t read very well, but 3 guys got in pretty fast.
Gabbert played fine throwing a few dumpoffs, but the defense made plays all over the place, including another strong game from Mike Purcell, and a lot of pressure from 1st round pick Arik Armstead. AA brought the pressure that led to the Purcell pick 6.
Quinton Patton had an awful 18 yard loss on what should have been a 6 yard gain, but redeemed himself by blocking a punt and scoring on the block. Jarryd Hayne had another stellar day returning punts, but his very upright running style may get him blasted at some point. That being said, he has outstanding vision in traffic, and just may be able to avoid shit out there.
Hard to say how the starting CBs were as there was little passing by Dallas that was effective at all. The good news again was no major injuries. VMcD, the invisible TE, was out early with a sprained ankle, and Tank Carradine left the game with a lower leg injury. Neither seemed very bad, but we’ll wait an see what the team says today. The field held up fine, and so did the team.
Forty Niners Forever 
I don’t think any of the starters see more than one set of downs in the 4th game so this next week is pretty important. But from what I’ve seen so far there are a lot of teams that really look worse than us.
Like someone somewhere said, Detroit went 4-0 in the preseason when they went 0-16. Sing went 4-0 in 2010 IIRC. Single played it to won though. Dumb.
Yeah, it’s pretty foolish to read very much into these games.

Not to sure but I’m thinking 3 preseason games might be the way to go. The 4th one is pretty much nothing anyway.
Two backs I’ve really enjoyed watching were Dickerson and Earl Campbell
Don’t remember seeing Campbell live, but I saw Dickerson plenty of times. Sweetness as well.
ED never seemed to have very good games ca us iirc.
Earl Campbell was a monster. Forget the rest of his HOF career (so-so), in his first 4 years, missing 2 games with injury: 6459 yards, 4.5 avg, 55 TDs. That’s 55 TDs in 62 games!

My kids and I met Dickerson in Canton several years ago when Jerry went into the HOF.
My Son and I had our picture taken with him.
Told him I hated him in his playing days because we were 9er fans but, did tell him I respected his game.
He appreciated the honesty at least.
My Son and I sorta had him squeezed between us for the photo, arms around his back.
After the shot my Son said ‘Dad did you feel the guy’s back? He’s still ripped! I bet he could still play’ 😀

Boy do the Cubbies have the Giants number. Swept at Wrigley and now dropping the first one at home. I’m afraid to look, but I think they’re about 27 games behind the Cubs for the second wildcard spot now. It’s the division or nothing.
The Giants are dead meat unless the Dodgers die of fright in the final days.

Davis is a bit bigger than Hunter and, of course younger.
Word is, the ACL doesn’t seem to be an issue for Hunter but, RBs take a heavier risk with the knees than most other positions would.
Additional speculation that Rookie Ian Silberman may have supplanted Martin at RG for the immediate future.
Suggesting that Martin could hold the Center duties until Kilgore returns if Silberman can hold onto RG.

The Giants just can’t stay healthy. Once they get Panik and Pence back they should be fine. Just depends on how much ground they need to make up once they are healthy. And don’t count he Cubbies out. They’ve blown bigger leads than this.

Ian Silberman? Has he played with the 1st team? I haven’t seen him out there. Hard to say how the line is blocking when the starters get so little time, and we haven’t attempted that many passes.
Bullitt says Gore was open every pass play last year. EVERY pass play! He NEVER blocked! I guess All-22 or whatever the fuck it is isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Some people just like to create their own reality based on nothing but fantasy.

I haven’t been paying enough attention. The Eagles have Sproles, Ryan Matthews and DeMarco Murray? Geez, no wonder four of their QBs have looked good so far. (Well, actually Bradford’s been the worst of the bunch, but he’s playing with the 1s. If this game against Balt is any indication, he won’t last the season or anything close.)
Bullit should see this game featuring Bradford and Flacco. I don’t think I’ve seen an accurate pass yet. The INT I just saw Flacco throw with plenty of time to throw was about five feet over the open receiver’s head. I guess he’s washed up. Bullit should tell John Harbaugh.
If Bakkentom wants Kappy traded, we should trade him to the Eagles so he can watch Kap put them over the top with a Top 5 Offense. As it stands, their offense is loaded in personnel and great playcalling, all they need is real quality at QB.
