Thanks to Grace Slick for that. Well, it wasn’t the 1981 NFC Championship game victory, or even a regular season victory. But it did mark the first win of the newly installed coaching staff. Preseason makes it meaningless, sure. But the trends from last week kept up yesterday.
No clock management issues. Solid D line play, solid run blocking, a little better pressure on the QB from the pass rush, and another exemplary performance from the man from down under. Granted, Dallas didn’t play Dez or Witten, and Tony Regular Season only played one series (1-1 for -1), but the Niner run defense was stout, and the pass defense was good. 3 picks, and they could have had a couple more. I think Dallas is really going to miss Demarco Murray. And their O line is a mess already. The running back by committee isn’t looking good.
Plusses were definitely seeing Navorro Bowman out there making plays. 3 plays, 3 tackles, 2 TFLs. Dockett played as well, so that was good to see. Kappy had one nice drive. Comverting a 3rd down on a pass to his secondary WR, Carlos Hyde. What a concept. A back out of the backfield. He had a TD pass to T Smith broken up on a nice defensive play to end that drive. The next drive was a sack that Kappy didn’t read very well, but 3 guys got in pretty fast.
Gabbert played fine throwing a few dumpoffs, but the defense made plays all over the place, including another strong game from Mike Purcell, and a lot of pressure from 1st round pick Arik Armstead. AA brought the pressure that led to the Purcell pick 6.
Quinton Patton had an awful 18 yard loss on what should have been a 6 yard gain, but redeemed himself by blocking a punt and scoring on the block. Jarryd Hayne had another stellar day returning punts, but his very upright running style may get him blasted at some point. That being said, he has outstanding vision in traffic, and just may be able to avoid shit out there.
Hard to say how the starting CBs were as there was little passing by Dallas that was effective at all. The good news again was no major injuries. VMcD, the invisible TE, was out early with a sprained ankle, and Tank Carradine left the game with a lower leg injury. Neither seemed very bad, but we’ll wait an see what the team says today. The field held up fine, and so did the team.
Forty Niners Forever 
One thing that I hadn’t seen in a while was, as the Niners were trying to run their 2 minute offense as the half closed, they had all their time outs at their disposal. It makes the game MUCH easier to manage when you don’t piss away timeouts. And they ended up kicking the FG.
If you haven’t seen this, you are in for a treat.
Great time capsule video. Next weeks game should give a better idea of the team. Our 1st string should play most of the first half and we will see the opposing 1st D for most of that. I don’t see how they can let Hayne do anything but make the 53 man roster.

Charlie, like I posted during the game, the cheering didn’t have time to stop and they were at the line of scrimmage calling the play, I think they had 1 or 2 delay of game penalties called. Last year it was 4 within the first 4 plays called!!

Yeah, I’m very encouraged by that, Kevin. I didn’t see any, but by the time the scrubs came out, I started watching the Giants game. Glad the crowd is into it.
I’m a little worried by the hipster shit that happened at ATT once that opened. It took a couple years to weed out the posers and the laptop crowd.
Sure hope Kilgore can make it back ! If not maybe we can go with Martin at center and Thomas at RG.

The one thing I am disappointed about the coaching staff is I would like to see the first team offense on the field a little longer. I hope the first unit plays for at least the first half on Saturday.

Hayne makes the 53. Harold is not soft. Armstead is a heck of a player in the making. Tartt hits like a train. Purcell has come into his own, he makes the 53. Bowman, 3 plays, 3 tackles, enough said. Reaser and Acker both have a legit shot at the 53. Skov is trying too hard. Dial looked like J.Smith in his heyday when he split the D double team and got 1/2 sack. There was a Lemonier sighting but nothing too exciting.
The O logistical problems have evaporated, funny that. Pinion makes the loss of Andy Lee bearable. McCray makes the 53. Kap had a solid outing and the back shoulder throw to Smith was spot on, great D. Gabbert is the new king of dump offs, makes Alex Smith look like Brett Favre. Dahl is having a good pre-season.
The running game looks great in the new zone scheme, stretch plays work. RB catching passes? The O line 1’s are solid not spectacular. I would cut Patton. lost a dozen yards in a dumb play and didn’t get out of bounds when he should of to stop the clock, oh and he is near invisible in practice and games. Marcus Martin looked better at C than RG. Thomas is one big MoFo with talent. Bruce Miller is a stud. I hope Kilgore comes back soon, not sold on Looney.
Passing game needs more time/practice.

I agree with everything except I do think Harold is soft at this point in time. Not mentally but he misses tackles. On the sack he was falling to the ground. Dial, is w\ho made that sack possible by taking on and blowing up the double team. He is quick as heck. He tries to be physical except he isn’t and he plays too fast. He needs to learn to play within his abilities. I think by next year he will be more physical, learn to play lower and the game will slow down some for him. And then he will no longer be considered soft. I do think he was a good draft pick but he needs a year to develop.
Cool, almost total agreement across the board. I credit Dial above, heck of a play. I expect Harold to be in the rotation on situational 3rd down later in the year. He is a rookie learning, don’t see him as soft. Agree hwith is trying to play too fast but to me that’s part of being a rookie.

Some players like Aaron Maybin are just soft by nature. Harold is soft by experience. Maybin will always be soft, it looks like Harold will develop. Sounds like we see it the same and are using different labels.
One thing I like about Harold is he shows the willingness to be physical, he’s just not that strong right now. His style does show a good attitude toward doing what is necessary so I do believe he’ll be OK in the long run. He’s still useful as a speed rusher for now.
Yeah we are on the same page with Harold.
At lot riding on Lynch now since Aldon is out. I was counting on Aldon/Lynch to provide most of the rush as I’m sure Mangini was. Makes it tougher now.
12th Trent Brown is a VERY nimble kid for his size.
Pretty much epitomizes the term ‘Dancing Bear’ for me.

All new and somewhat raw but, looks like a nice foundation forming.
Baalke gets to pick at the back end of the draft not the top. He also has a very talented roster to add to each year. Its hard to find complimentary pieces and hard to find replacements for stars when you are picking low. He does an amazing job of assembling a ton of picks, he has 12 projected for next year, and he finds a way to give talented depth for the coaches to bring up to speed out of the public eye.
His last 2 transactions he asked for picks in 2017.
He has his misses, in that business they all do, but here the Niners are with a biblical flood of lost high profile players yet the team still looks to be talented enough to compete.

Roger Goodell’s PR attempts at making this league look respectable totally shot down with this one. Carter was specifically brought in by the NFL. Snarkk it’s unfortunate that Borland chose to retire so abruptly but, him citing the comment made by Carter adds fuel to the fire of doubt he apparently was having with the Pro game.
Granted, the kid was certainly having many doubts along the way.
I simply can’t fathom how the NFL would allow this sort of dialog to go unchecked, especially in the Rookie ranks.

As for Hayne, hell, the dude is exciting.
Check out how he easily switches the ball from hand to hand when he moves to the outside. Smooth. Obviously knows how to handle a ball, and run with it. The guy is a lock to be the punt returner, and get special plays in the red zone…

Dickerson got away with running tall. Hayne has GREAT field vision along those same lines, and in his limited action, seems to be aware of all the guys who have a shot at him and adjusts accordingly.
That’s the great runner in NFL history that ran straight up in the helmet era, Eric Dickerson.
Dickerson got away with it because he was 6’4″. He could see over most of the other players out there. And he rarely got hit hard.
I think he got away with it because he had a great O-line and he was so quick and fast. He would lower his head when absolutely necessary. I remember he and Lott meeting just past the LOS with both of their heads meeting next to the ground. It was a memorable collision.
Shows how dull these practice games are when the punt receiving guy from another country is the star.

I’m one of the few who believe it is good to have 4 preseason games. The practice makes for a better product for opening week. If the argument is 2 less preseason games and two more regular season games, that would actually create more injuries. I am not for that.
With OTC and TC being so limited with pads these days I think 4 games is best too. Just not enough time to prep players now that 2 a days etc are gone.
No, my take is 2 less preseason games, and a 16 game season. The owners will never go for it.

Winder, yes, there is a lot to be played for. The line is still being figured out, but has impressed me with their adapting to zone blocking. The run game has been very successful. Sure. it’s practice, but it has worked with the 1st stringers on both sides. Pass pro looks better. Not spectacular, but better than last year. That’s all we need.
This team is still going to rely on the defense. It needs to be better at red zone scoring and sustaining drives. This next game will be interesting. I’d like to see Kappy get a couple quarters and really show that he’s getting accustomed to the new offense.
I’d like to see Kap get into the third Q next game. The time to see what combos work on the line and for WR and CB is over at the end of this week. Now its about playing together to get it all down.
The 4th game is the last chance for 1 or 2 players to make PS as the 53 will be known after this weeks game.
They still won’t scheme the opponent this week but it should be mostly the ones in the first half at least.
I don’t think the pass pro is better than last year, yet. The run blocking sure looks better.
Hard to say with such limited time together.
This next game should show a lot regarding that.
Much is being made of the lack of scoring from this offense, but no one is really concerned.
Or are they? The Rams have gained 52 yards on 25 plays led by new savior Nick Foles. No TDs, one pick.
Palmer for AZ looks a little better with 165 yards and a TD.
RW? 90 yards 0 TDs in limited action.
Kappy? 3/7 26 yards. Impressive. (I’m kidding NoFear. Jesus.)
Point being, there’s no point. The Rams appear to be striuggling. AZ, not so much. Seattle is struggling offensively as well. Us? Yeah, I’d call it struggling. Kappy led a FG drive last week in 3 drives. Foles has a pick among his 12 passes.
Thing is, Seattle and AZ are not installing a new offense or a new QB. StL and the Niners are. Even still, it means little to nothing. Sure, I’d like to see us getting the ball to the WRs more, but with the line being an issue, we are getting the ball out fast, and not trying a lot of deep routes. Seattle is much the same. Nothing crazy. Just trying to get through the preseason without any injuries.
Still and all, as I said before, I’d like to see Kappy play 2 quarters and get more comfortable with this offense.
Look at what Eli did this weekend. It’s not pretty.
