Well, game one came and went in the Jim Tomsula errror, uh era. All in all, the team looked good when the first and second stringers were playing. No major injuries, and the only minor one was to LB Desmond Bishop with a calf strain. The D line looked real nice stopping Hou 9 times inside the 10 yard line. Gaine Blabbert looked like not the 32nd best backup and made some nice underneath throws to the TEs. And surprising to me, the O line looked wholly serviceable in the first half. Kappy had the time to throw a deep ball to Torrey Smith, who blew past Hou’s 2 CBs. Kappy didn’t get enough air underneath it, but this is a play that these guys need to work on more to get the timing down. Gabbert had time to get the ball out clean without too much pressure. Granted, Hou didn’t play Watt, but the O line, which isn’t deep, played well. Til the backups came in, and Dylan Thompson was under siege in scrubbini time.
Jarryd Hayne had about a perfect day as one could hope for by doing great in PR/KR duties, and breaking off a 58 yard run in the 2nd quarter to set up the Niner TD.
The LBs were OK, and the coverage was fairly bleh, but we didn’t have our first unit out there for the most part. Dockett and Bowman didn’t play, and don’t expect to see a lot of them this preseason, but Bethea laid the wood a couple times, and the run D was stout, but I’m worried about the pass coverage.
Weird to say the least to see a 33 yard extra point. All in all, about what you’d hope for from game 1 of the preseason. No injuries, a nice TD drive, a nice goal line stand, and some points on the board from the 1st/2nd stringers. Houston won the battle of the Walmart brigade in the 2nd half 15-0, but the 1st and 2nd string won 10-8.

Exactly. Simpson won’t count against the 53 so the team can keep an extra WR in play for 6 weeks and then make a decision who to hang on to. Not the ideal way to go about it but as its the 3rd WR we are talking about and so far not much has separated the group vying for the spot, its not that tragic either.
Certainly not worth a few crocodile tears from Bullit and Phil. Contrived controversies are a waste of energy.
12th if nothing else, it appears to me that Baalke and Co are making a VERY concerted effort to improve speed within the WR Corps.

Kaep needs to take a major leap in the passing game this year.
Torrey and Boldin have worked together in Baltimore so, there’s plenty of talent there to assist Kaep if he’s willing to find timing with them.
Didn’t see much of Kaep last week that would give me anything to speculate on other than missing Torrey deep early in the game.
The upside is, Torrey got open.
Kaep needs chemistry.
I did like the rhythm however.
He can’t stand back there looking around like he did last year.
I look at pre season as player evaluation and practicing huddles, play calls, substitutions etc. The only game I look for any more than that is the first half of the 3rd game where although they are probably not scheming tendencies they are making an effort to simulate a real game.
Kap and the receivers have to get their timing down, which depends on the O line affording time to go through progressions, something we saw very little of last year. As NJ says, they are placing an emphasis on syncing the QB/WR and the rhythm is improved, so far.
Encouraging.
12th the OLine benefits with a quick attack also.
Speed on the outside benefits the TE position as well.
So far, Logan and Chryst seem to have something that could help this Offense tremendously.
Assuming of course, that Kaep can get through his reads quickly and deliver on time.
For me, Kaep needs touch, in order for the short game to threaten a Defense.
What happened with Phil anyway? He attacked Skeebs consistently for a long period of time on this blog, something about Skeebs snooping on him in some form or other IIRC. He was happily hanging out over here then Spitty turned him to the dark side and hey presto he is over on Skeebs again and Chuck is the new asshole. What gives Chuck?

For me, the difference between an OG and OT is how well they can move their feet.
Trent is blessed with Inspector Gadget arms too.

Yeah, it was preseason game 1 but they did he basic shit well. The pass pro was decent early and they hit some nice runs. No stupid penalties.
Lots of people laughing about being encouraged about the lack of delay penalties, but they couldn’t fix that in 8 years. Rhythm was noticeably better as well.
They laugh because their idol Harby wasn’t smart enough to fix the problem so now they are trying to trivialize the problem THEY complained about for years and years.

I saw Gabbert call an audible. Guess what happened? We got the ball snapped with no clock issues.
NF, there is no doubt that the huddle broke very late the majority of the time. There is also no doubt that the verbiage, the 2 play system and the amount of people involved in relaying the play to the QB are all coaching decisions.
Time left on the clock to get to the line, institute the motions and then choose which of the 2 plays to go with were all part of the coaching requirements.
The part left to the players is actually choosing the play and snapping the ball. The time left to do that was not very much.
I don’t see the part where the coaching is not demonstrably the reason for no time left/delay of game/time out.
