Well, for good or bad, the 2014 season is upon us. The only thing left now is to see how long we lose the services of Aldon Smith, and to cut 21 other guys from the roster. That is, if Goodie Goodell cooperates. Yesterday’s laugher at the hands of the Houston Houstons was an extravaganza of 2nd and 3rd string players going against the Walmart brigade. The highlight was back-up long snapper (and would-be TE) Kyle Nelson catching 2 TDs, Bruce Ellington catching one, and Chris Borland’s 60 yard pick 6.
The Niners did what so many teams do to them, and Houston followed the Niners old (hopefully) script of winning the TOP in the 1st half, but getting held to 2 FGs, and then giving up late TDs in the half to fall behind.
Still and all, after the defense started out sluggishly, they played well these last 2 games, giving up 13 points after giving up 57. The young LBs have come around nicely, and there are some big decisions coming up in their ranks, as Aaron Lynch and Chris Borland played very well. Nick Moody also played well. The pass rush, which was missing the first 2 games was much improved, and that was without blitzing. Then again, we were facing 2nd and 3rd string QBs in Kasey Casem and Red Skelton yesterday, so there’s that. And the Raiders beat the Seahawks. Huzzah . . .

You guys don’t read the news much do you. the entire NFL was totally embarrassed by Goodie for the 2 game suspension. Basically Goodie gave a green light to all NFL players for spousal abuse. Stupid, stupid, stupid. ESPN and all sports writers talked about how the NFL was going to make up for that injustice. Unfortunately the next guy in line is one Aldon Smith. So he got the shit end of the stick along with the 49ers.
It wasn’t Goodie. The rules for abuse weren’t strong enough. After RR they changed the rules.

Our league is now down to 8. Just like our Yahoo! league. I’ve also made the necessary changes so both leagues mirror themselves. That means we’re once again drafting IDPs . Longtime manager ‘Faithful (Did we trade Vernon Davis yet?) also can’t play. He was adamant about not playing defensive players. So if you recall, I nixed them after year one in our ESPN. Well, now they’re back!
So Chuck, RTF, and all the other ESPN managers we’ll once again be drafting a full squad that best represents a total team. As much as I scream about “throw the goddamn ball!” I’m a defensive guy at heart. Always have been, always will.
I’m moving our LIVE draft time back an 1/2 hr. just to make sure it doesn’t overlap with our Yahoo! league that drafts earlier that same night.

This is really a fantastic rant. It’s fantastic from start to finish. And I agree with you…. er, parts of it at least. But here’s what you’re missing. Pryor would only have to do it one or two games a year behind Kaep. And he’s already proven he can win games in the NFL using his legs. How did your hero, Steve Young (not my hero at all) become a good passing or throwing qb? He bought time with his legs and that’s clearly what Kaep and Pryor are doing or need to do. But Pryor can also throw the ball. And finally, the Niners should look into Pryor because they’d keep him out of the hands of the Rams. And that defense ain’t no joke.

Charlie Whitehead was ABAS which I’m proud of because I took a stand while you were on the fence and my boy Berger below me (which he will always be) flip-flopped once in Alex’s camp then crying “Whatever Harbaugh wants,” the minute the ABAS camp was deemed correct. But I respect Berger more because at least he took a stand even if later he flip-flopped. Chuck, you rode the fence like a horny woman rides a washing machine.
Is there anyone here who thinks Aaron Lynch can’t play and contribute in the NFL? I seem to remember somebody here saying he was a wasted pick, I just can’t remember who it was. It looks like he could be the steal of the draft. Can’t say yet if he contributes, but for sure it was a great pick.
I said it and I’ll say it again – Aaron Lynch is a bust. Period. He’s dumber than Nate Davis. Not that you have to be a rocket sturgeon to rush the qb, but you do need to be able to keep your body in shape and you do need to be able to stay out of trouble. Aldon can at least stay healthy. Anyone who blows out two hamstrings on the same play has the mental discipline (to stay in shape) of a hamster. How do you come into your rookie year that out of shape? Even if I couldn’t afford a trainer because I went to South Florida Tech JC, I think I might run around the block a few times.
I also think Jimmy Ward is too small to play consistent football in the NFC West and he needs to bulk up with a quickness. I hate the Donte Johnson pick, and Borland sucks because he’s white. Del doesn’t like black quarterbacks, I don’t like white linebackers. Derek Smith, Hacksaw Jim Reynolds, Matt Millen, Zack Thomas? I hate ’em all. Gary Plummer? I really hated Gary Plummer. There was never a play fake Gary Plummer didn’t go for, ever, in the history of football. My stars. And he was the worst ever on the radio, too. My stars.
But while we’re talking players we’ve backed. How did it feel to watch your beloved Alex Smith get shipped out to KC after all the years of politicking for Smith? But you have to be super pumped to have Blaine Gabbert on your team. He was your horse in that race, and you know it. How’d that work out for you? Especially when Kaep was right in your backyard. Spitty- I never called for Alex Smith being a good QB until half way into Harbaugh’s first year. My stance was always how can you tell if he is good or bad until he gets a good coach. That line always pisses off NoFear because of his love for Mike Nolan. Since I didn’t join the hanging posse I was labeled a Smith supporter. I guarantee that based on some stances I saw on the blogs about Alex Smith that many from these modern times would have been burning witches in Salem MA. Absolutely no doubt. As far as Gabbert, I did predict that he would be drafted in the first round but I never wanted him. I’ve never been a fan of gun slingers, Gabbert is a gun slinger. Nolan tried to help Alex with everything from leaving him on the bench and so carrying four QBs on the roster, to myriad targets for him to throw to, to help on the o-line. Nothing worked then and nothing’s worked since to make Alex the QB you always insisted he was.

And Del, do you know another reason why I hate George Seifert and Steve Young compared to Jim Harbaugh and Colin Kaepernick? It’s because I hate a man, or men, who inherit things and then lay a claim on greatness. If you inherit something, you better do something big with it. Harbaugh and Kaepernick have built this from scratch. They were handed 6-10 and a qb who had 12 passing yards to his wide receivers in the NFC Championship game. Kaep and Harbaugh are actually building something. Young and Seifert? Hey… at least the ship didn’t sink as fast as it did on Barry Switzer.
Seifert won two Super bowls, one with a completely revamped defense, including going from 3-4 to 4-3.. I think held his end of the bargain up quite well.
Seifert screwed Montana and that’s all you need to know about him. He had a chance to turn a loser into a winner a la Walsh when he went to the Panthers.
Built from scratch? Look at the 2011 roster and see if scratch describes it.

I hear ya, NoFear. Unca and I argued about this earlier. This team wasn’t stacked but it wasn’t awful either. To get it to championship caliber the team needed a better secondary, a qb, wide receivers and an elite pass rusher. It’s not easy to draft ’em, find ’em in free agency and then coach ’em up and make all the pieces fit. A lesser coach doesn’t make that happen – particularly he can’t find a franchise qb and develop him as quickly as Harbaugh did. Unca and NJ were trying to claim the team was stacked. It was a long way from stacked. But it did have talent from Nolan. I’ll give you that.
You give Harbaugh too much credit. It’s not one guy. It’s never one guy. If it was, the great head coaches would never fail. And they do. It’s the owner, the GM, the assistant coaches and other staff, and especially the players. Most all the players were already here.
Harbaugh saw Alex was not the guy, but so did I, from his second year here. No QB genius required. And he hasn’t exactly made Kaepernick into a QB that scares defenses. The only thing that scares them about CK7 so far is his legs and he brought those with him. Harbaugh is developing him and he looks to have great potential but potential and four bucks will get you a cup of Joe at Starbucks.
A better offensive scheme would sure help Kap’s development.
If Trent Baalke had tried to keep Walker, Moss or Ginn, last year’s offense wouldn’t have been so vanilla. And the worst part is, Baalke had a surplus.

Berger’s full of shit regarding Alex Smith, and anyone who’s been blogging long enough around here or Skeeber’s blog knows it. Berger was the entire reason I coined the term “Alexcuses.” One minute Berger was blaming our offensive line, the next minute Berger was blaming our wide receivers. Then he was blaming the OC. If there was a problem with any part of Alex Smith’s supporting cast, Berger was pointing the finger at them, deflecting blame off Smith. That was Berger’s game for several years – not just a year or two… several years.
As president of the “I hate Alex Smith Club,” my main criteria for hating Smith was that I didn’t believe Alex Smith was good enough to win a Super Bowl with. For me, that was my entire argument – he can’t win the big one, and if you agree then we need to give the opportunity to someone else. This is what spawned ABAS. Whether Berger wants to recognize it or not, Berger was on the other side of the argument believing Alex Smith could win a Super Bowl. Berger never thought Alex was Montana, but he did point to Dilfer and other lacking qbs with rings on occasion. Berger was wrong. And NoFear’s right. Berger does fancy himself some kind of quarterback guru but he’s got no insight there. DL? Yes. QB? No.
Now.. IRONICALLY, when Berger blogs about Harbaugh he writes about Harbaugh losing big games and what it’s all really about…. winning Super Bowls. So this is Berger’s criteria and it’s a good one…. it’s mine as well. But what really hurts if you’re Berger is knowing you thought Alex could win the big one and then having Harbaugh come in, rejuvenate Smith’s career while plugging key rookies and free agents into Singletary voids, creating a championship caliber team only to see Smith throw for 12 yards to receivers in the NFC Championship game (a loss Berger no doubt blames on Kyle Williams) and then Harbaugh replaces Smith with an inexperienced qb and ships Smith off to KC. It was only then at this point did Berger change his tune – moving away from the Alexcuses and into the realm of “Smith just needed a good head coach to be serviceable,” or even worse, “I’m happy with whatever Harbaugh decides.” There was never a moment when Berger recognized that Harbaugh trading Smith was an indictment on Smith’s ability to win a Super Bowl, and an indictment on Berger’s knowledge or insights regarding NFL qb play. Berger just changed his tune after Kaep took over and is now trying to support his revised version of the wonderful Alex Smith years on the blogs.
The reality is that Berger was a died in the wool, lifetime Alex Smith supporter and when Smith got shipped out, Berger couldn’t man up to it and say he was wrong about Smith. Berger hedged from Super Bowl caliber qb to “serviceable qb who just needed a coach to be a decent NFL qb.” And to make matter worse, Skeebers is a bigger Alex Smith lover than Berger. That blog was unbearable for a year and a half… and then…. lol… Smith got hurt and it turned their world upside down. When those two saw Harbaugh ship Smith out of dodge in favor of a guy Harbaugh believed could be a king maker, Berger and Skeebers sure got quiet.
Today, the resentment towards Harbaugh for dumping Smith manifests itself in an attitude that Harbaugh can’t win the big one that’s propagated by Berger. Nevermind that Harbaugh is a relatively young coach. Nevermind that Harbaugh has gone to three straight NFC Championship games and owns the best record in football over the last three years. Berger wants Harbaugh blood for shipping his boy Alex Smith out of town. Del wants Harbaugh blood for a different reason – he’s an asshole. And I agree with Del. Harbaugh needs to learn to lighten up. Nothing pissed me off worse than Harbaugh berating the refs in the 4th preseason game two nights ago. That’s just stupid. But for me, because I was on the right side of the Alex Smith argument, I will always love Jim Harbaugh no matter what…. why? Because he made the right move and traded Alex Smith when the politicking bullshit got so deep in SF a lesser man or coach would have caved to the controversy. Harbaugh didn’t. He saw things clearly and shipped that old lemon, Alex Smith right out of town. For me, I’ll always respect the hell out of Jim Harbaugh for doing that very thing. And Berger? Berger bitter.

In the pre-season two years ago I said Alex will be the starter but he better not get hurt or Kap will take his job. Maybe my card should say Berger, the seer of the future! LOL
Why should I be bitter, I’ve been a Kap fan since he played at Nevada. I said before the draft that we should take Kap in the 3rd round. I was wrong, he would have been gone by then. I wanted Kap over Alex but I still think Alex is a good QB. For e it has worked out just right.
As far as Harbaugh, I like him as a coach but I can’t stand his offensive scheme which comes right out of the Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler Big 10. I would like to keep Harbaugh and have him hire an OC who understands modern NFL rules as it relates to play calling. It’s how I feel about Bruce Bochy, I don’t want to get rid of him but get a better offensive strategy. IMO, Harbaugh is a keeper but at some point he must realize that the offense he runs is costing him.

Ahhh, now this is blogging. It’s the zenith of blogging and it sure beats the hell outta debating NJ at 11pm.
Berger claims Harbaugh and Roman’s offense isn’t good or in his words, “I can’t stand [Harbaugh’s] offense.” Here are a few facts that shaped last year’s offense that Berger either denies or simply doesn’t understand.
1.) Last year was Kaep’s first year as a starting qb the entire season. He’s still young and learning how to read defenses.
2.) In the off season last year, Trent Baalke dumped (or decided not to re-sign) numerous offensive players who were major parts to the 49er offense: Ted Ginn Jr., Randy Moss, Delanie Walker. In addition, Micheal Crabtree blew out his Achilles and Patton got injured. These aren’t excuses, these are all facts. It’s also my own personal criticism of Baalke. If you consider #1, you don’t significantly cut a first year quarterback’s offensive weapons like Baalke did to Kaep. Go back and watch the 49ers’ offensive run to the Super Bowl. There was absolutely nothing wrong with that offense. That offensive was awesome. Same coaches and qb. What happened? Kaep to Cratbree and Moss was awesome, and Delanie Walker was a huge part of that offense. But then Baalke let them all leave while the 49ers had a salary cap surplus last year. To me, that’s a Trent Baalke mistake and I think it’s the heart of the dispute between Harbaugh and the 49er organization.
3.) Last year Berger was claiming the 49ers had a “sardine can offense,” when the only offensive weapons both Harbaugh and Roman had were Q, Gore and Vernon. If you only have three offensive weapons for a majority of the season, your offensive creativity and imagination is limited because it’s easy to guard and take away three guys. Offenses need to be five and six good skilled offensive players deep. Sure, we all wanted to the 49ers go spread and then morph to power and have the most dynamic offense in the NFL, but if you couple Kaep’s relative inexperience with Baalke handcuffing Harbaugh offensively, leading Harbaugh to announce to his team, “I want to compete with this exact team next year,” it’s a wonder Harbaugh took the 49ers to the NFC Championship game at all…. and almost won.
But really… at the bottom of all this is Berger’s bitterness with Harbaugh for dumping Berger’s boy, Alex Smith. It’s hard now for Berger to enjoy watching 49er football. It was hard for me to watch the Alex Smith years back then. It’s hard now for Berger to watch the Jim Harbaugh years today. And that’s why Berger doesn’t blog here. Because I remind him of how he lost the Alex Smith argument and it drives him off. Alex Smith ~ The Berger Bug Spray.
I think Trent Baalke just made another mistake. I don’t think Trent Baalke gets it. I think he’s a bad GM. What did Trent Baalke just do? He just severely handcuffed Brad Seeley by dumping our long snapper, McDermot (sp?) dumping Spillman and Osgood… and let’s not forget we just lost Anthony Dixon to the Bills and Costanzo got hurt. This is now becoming Trent Baalke’s MO – gut entire units and put pressure on coordinators. Last year Baalke dumped Ginn, Moss and Walker and put too much pressure on a first year qb. This year Baalke guts the defensive backfield and guts the 49er special teams units. I think Baalke’s an idiot. He’s too extreme with his cuts. It puts too much pressure on coaches. Last year Roman took the blame for bad Baalke moves. This year it will be made more clear that it wasn’t Roman’s fault last year when Fangio and Seeley’s unit struggle too much. Honestly, if I was Jim Harbaugh, I wouldn’t resign here either without total control of the draft and 53 man roster. Trent Baalke sucks.
And Aldon Smith getting suspended isn’t Baalke’s fault, but if you have a young secondary like we’ve got, you better get a pass rush to make up for communication mistakes and now we’re without our best pass rusher for 9 games. I sincerely hope Tank, Lemonier and Skuta can pickup the slack. Lynch is still playing with his mix and match Garanimals.
I’ll like and support the switch of our LSs IF, that means they cut Carrier and use Nelson as our third TE. Carrier was nothing but dead weight at that spot. And if, and it’s another big IF to believe they’re going to use more WR sets, that third and final TE spot becomes unnecessary.
Lower on the IQ totem pole? Lynch and his mix and match Garanimals or Nate Davis and his coloring books? That’s a toughie. How’d you like to be forced to watch those two play a game of checkers? Talk about cruel and unusual punishment.

What’s really killing this 49er football team is Trent Baalke’s selections of AJ Jenkins, LaMicheal James and even Vance McDonald. Think about the domino effect. If Baalke had pulled his head out of his ass and drafted Alshon Jeffrey, who I was crying for pre draft, right now Jeffrey would still be playing on his rookie contract for us and we wouldn’t have to be squirreling away nuts for Crabtree’s contract. We also wouldn’t have had to overpay for Stevie Johnson who did next to nothing in the pre season.
AJ Jenkins – the pick that kept the 49ers from winning multiple rings. If I was Harbaugh, I wouldn’t re-sign here with Baalke either.
Someone tell me again why we paid 2 million for Blaine Gabbert? Nice move, Baalke. Seems to me like the Blaine Gabbert acquisition just cost us a special teams coverage unit. 2 million guaranteed for Gabbert and we lost Spillman, Ventrone, Osgood, Snyder and others. Why? Cost saving to pay for Gabbert when by Harbaugh’s estimation Josh Johnson was just as good. Harbaugh’s politicking for Josh Johnson pre 53 just made Baalke look like a fool…. or more of one. Trent Baalke fuckin’ sucks.
I wouldn’t coach here either with picks like AJ Jenkins and acquisitions like Blaine Gabbert. 5 million a year? My ass. That falls squarely on Harbaugh/Roman and the Coaching Staff.
Stevie Johnson had a good body of work against Mr Dick in Seattle too.
Something a good GM obviously weighed in his decision to fork over a Pick and assume a Contract for.
Think of what College Coaches do every 4 years. They turn over their rosters.
Harbaugh figures it’s cool to hang onto everyone because they keep dozens of guys on the sidelines in College.

Normally I don’t debate with morons but this one’s a slam dunk. Baalke finds cap room by not acquiring shitting NFL players via trade like Stevie Johnson and Blaine Gabbert. That’s 6 million a year for those two guys and one of them’s a backup. The other is fighting to become the 3rd wide receiver with Quinton Patton. What if Johnson’s the 4th receiver? Lol. What if we just spent 6 million this year on a backup and a 4th receiver? That 6 million just cost us a lot of depth on special teams and along the O line. That’s on Baalke.
He offset the needs between Vet experience and youth Spit.
Not an easy situation but, a good talent evaluator makes those calls.
Older more expensive guys on Offense or ST?
Seems to me a 3rd WR with some talent outweighs a PT ST guy, as does an experienced backup QB with some upside.
Seems to me like guys on the bench (Gabbert and Johnson) don’t make nearly the impact as guys who start (Ventrone, Spillman, Osgood…). Unless of course Gabbert and Johnson take this course of action…. then they could make an impact. 6 million on the bench? Nice move, Baalke.
Jim Harbaugh does not have say on the final 53 man roster. He doesn’t have the final word. He can make suggestions like just about any other head coach in the league, but he doesn’t have the final word. And it’s my guess this is a huge sticking point with negotiations…. and rightly so. Trent Baalke’s a fuckin’ moron. I don’t want a moron deciding my future like Baalke decides Harbaugh’s. Blaine Gabbert? AJ Jenkins? LaMicheal James? Stevie Johnson? Trent McCloughan needs to go.
Harbaugh and Baalke are waiting in the parking lot. They have grim determination in their looks. Wait! Blaine Gabbert is joining them. Yikes! Spit get out town while gettins good.

You enjoy bashing his efforts but, by and large, he’s assembled a very deep and productive Roster.
The Pick he gave up for Stevie has already been replaced through a Trade he pulled in April’s Draft.
Money is constantly being moved in this business.
Our FO has cut some of the most favorable Contracts in the game.
Baalke hasn’t missed on many.
Gabbert is a 1 year $2M insurance plan, nothing more.
If Harbaugh works him into a serviceable QB, as he did with Alex, there’s another potential Deal waiting for Baalke to capitalize on.
He also protected the majority of the young guys on NFI and PUP lists too.
As for the 53 man roster.
Bet your backside the Coaches make the evaluations.
It then becomes a decision between the GM and Coach as to what tips the scales.
Contracts likely played a huge part of the Snyder and CJ decisions too.
Next move is the PS.
The GM has a ton of responsibilities.
Finally, Harbaugh will decide his own future, that’s not on Baalke, or Jed, as you seem to assign it.
2-way street in that negotiation.

I don’t know who’s the bigger idiot – you, Jerry Jones or Trent Baalke? Saying the 4th round pick for Stevie Johnson has already been replaced is stupid even for you. Baalke didn’t just create another 4th round pick. Baalke used other 49er resources to replace the pick – resources that could have been used else where. You do this frequently, trying to justify stupid Baalke moves. The fact is the 49ers wasted a 6th and 4th for Johnson and Gabbert, but in addition to the waste of those picks we also spend 6 million against the cap for those players who force other players off the team to keep us in line with the cap. Yesterday we lost a 6th and a 4th, today we lost Ventrone, Osgood, Spillman, Snyder and others.
Are we trying to win a Super Bowl today, or are we trying to win one in five years? Because the last time I checked, Jim Harbaugh only had two more years left on his contract.

Stevie and Gabbert can also be restructured depending on their production.

His production could easily be used as leverage with Stevie if he outplays him.
There’s still much to tinker with once Dorsey, NaVorro and Aldon are factored back into the mix too.
For now, guys have been protected from getting taken during the cut-down phase.
They have exposed guys they feel were not worth protecting, at least for now.
They also happened to carry heavier Contracts.
If Boone comes around to reality, he’ll displace someone else.
You obviously caught the flag Harbaugh incurred for verbally trashing a Ref in Houston.

For me, he’s being evaluated against Pete this Season, not just for Contract value but, for his ability to beat him in the Division.
It’s been written in many places that Jim is a pig-headed individual.
Extremely hard to reason with etc.
He’s worn out many a welcome over his career.
Time will tell where this saga concludes.
Good records are great. His resume has been stellar to date in SF certainly.
It will still be measured against Pete in large part regardless.
