Well, for good or bad, the 2014 season is upon us. The only thing left now is to see how long we lose the services of Aldon Smith, and to cut 21 other guys from the roster. That is, if Goodie Goodell cooperates. Yesterday’s laugher at the hands of the Houston Houstons was an extravaganza of 2nd and 3rd string players going against the Walmart brigade. The highlight was back-up long snapper (and would-be TE) Kyle Nelson catching 2 TDs, Bruce Ellington catching one, and Chris Borland’s 60 yard pick 6.
The Niners did what so many teams do to them, and Houston followed the Niners old (hopefully) script of winning the TOP in the 1st half, but getting held to 2 FGs, and then giving up late TDs in the half to fall behind.
Still and all, after the defense started out sluggishly, they played well these last 2 games, giving up 13 points after giving up 57. The young LBs have come around nicely, and there are some big decisions coming up in their ranks, as Aaron Lynch and Chris Borland played very well. Nick Moody also played well. The pass rush, which was missing the first 2 games was much improved, and that was without blitzing. Then again, we were facing 2nd and 3rd string QBs in Kasey Casem and Red Skelton yesterday, so there’s that. And the Raiders beat the Seahawks. Huzzah . . .
Forty Niners Forever 
Funny thing is, Alex Boone looks to be on less solid ground as Jonathan Martin and Joe Looney both did well in his place as this preseason went on.
Going to be some good stuff on our discard list though . . .
Just looking through ESPN’s projected 49er roster and they had Bykowski making the team. No way. He got beaten like a rented red headed step child. If it’s me, I don’t keep Josh Johnson but I do keep Ken Acker. I think he’s better than last years Marcus Cooper. I like Josh, but Blaine showed enough and if Kaep gets hurt and Blaine struggles we’re screwed anyway.
I’d lose Blabbert. Josh has a beter grasp of things. Blabbert was throwing 90 mph fastballs (off target) for no reason.
Would we be on the hook for the 2 million if we cut Gabbert?
Yep. Gabbert is guaranteed his $2M even if he gets hit by a bus. So I say we hit ’em with a bus and get our fucking $2M worth.

Probably the same reason why Harbaugh is lobbying for two backups. He doesn’t like Gabbert but two million is two million. Makes me wonder… if Harbaugh has to come out in the media lobbying before cut down days, how much influence does Harbaugh have over the 53 man roster? If you put that together with Harbaugh saying awkwardly after the NFC Championship game, “I want this exact team back and I don’t care what the front office says,” to me that means Harbaugh wants more front office control.

Ray Rice was the worst thing that could have happened to Aldon Smith. Another terrible thing that happened to 49er fans was Jim Harbaugh once again berating the refs in a preseason game and drawing a penalty flag. That’s just stupid. 5 million per year doesn’t buy you personal growth. You put both of those two things together (Harbaugh not learning and Aldon out 9 games) and the 49ers aren’t winning the Super Bowl this year. Hell, they might not even make the playoffs. I’d put my money on the Seahawks to repeat.
I can pretty much guarantee you that Smith will appeal.
He should get credit for the time served.
He might have negotiated down to 9 games on the condition he wouldn’t appeal. No Bowman, Aldon, Dorsey, Whitner, Brown and Rogers? We better score 100 per game. Kaep just become my new favorite fantasy football qb.
I seriously doubt he negotiated down to 9 games. This should have been 6. I think they’ve already discussed the appeal and reduction down to 4 or 5 games.
Until I watched the Raiders disembowel the Seahawk 1st team D last night, Spitty, it was hard not to pick the Seahawks as an early favorite. But other playoff bound teams that can pass downfield will see that film. The Pack, the Saints, yeah even the Cards. The Eagles are more methodical WCO, but they’re good enough to qualify in that category as well.

Did you watch the Seahawks in the first three preseason games? Those are the games you evaluate on. They looked awesome.
They were playing for keeps last night. It was the Seattle 1st team who got torched by Carr twice ( 2nd team on the 3-4 drives). Carroll used all 3 TOs in the last 3 minutes hoping to stop the Raiders, get the ball back, and win or tie. You don’t do that in the last 3 min. of preseason if you don’t mean it. The look on Richard Sherman’s face on the sidelines after the 2nd TD told me all I need to know. He wasn’t laughing.
Nobody plays for keeps in the 4th game of the preseason. Actually… no Super Bowl defender does. The Raiders might. Which would explain the blowout.
Warn me about what? The Raiders are good? Seattle isn’t? Basing anything off of the 4th preseason game is less than astute, RTF.
RW leads a TD drive and leaves. The defense was off the field as well.
Indy beat Seatte last year going deep. That is a valid strategy. AZ and the Niners beat them with their defenses. Nothing much has changed.
Although I think we may be able to run on them a little more than last year as their d line is weaker. Especially if we put 2-4 WRs out there on most plays.
And I’ll guarandamntee they already discussed this.
It’s all part of the perception game that Goodell plays. Come down hard, and then back off due to the self-imposed 5 games off Smith took last year.
If Goodell comes down hard on Smith while he did his own rehab, he’ll look like an asshole. His latest waffling on Ray Rice only makes this harder to swallow.
He didn’t waffle on Gordon. And that was just for weed.
That was his 4th pot bust. 2 in college, 2 in the pros.
Who cares? It’s weed. Two states have made it legal. Weed doesn’t compare to driving a vehicle while wasted, smashing up a tree and shooting off guns during a party, potentially at a gang member. Gordon got screwed. There should be no penalty for weed. Rice got off easy. Gordon got screwed. Aldon got what he deserved. Unfortunately for all of us, Goodell can’t just step outside the lines of punishment, using his discretion when he sees fit. Not when the lawyers get involved.
Apparently they’ve already denied the appeal.
Fuck Goodell. Smith gets what amounts to a 14 game suspension.

Either Roger Goodell was a liar last fall, or the LAX incident potentially factored in more than many anticipated. There was one report that a witness thought Smith had been drinking.

Geez, you guys are thick. “The defense was off the field.” ???? Uh, no. The Seattle 1st teamers were on the field the whole time and they were playing the exact same pressing/ PI every play pass defense they always do.
Carr was hitting low and receivers’ back shoulders with pinpoint passes. Sherman, for one example of a CB who got torched, could not defend the back shoulder with his pressing, in your face defense.
Sure it was one game, one preseason game. But you have no clue, none whatsoever, if you think the Seahawks weren’t trying, didn’t want to win, or weren’t thoroughly embarrassed by giving up 3 TDs in 10 min., or 4 TDs, 3 through the air, in essentially the 1st qtr.
I watched the game and you didn’t, so I’ll just drop it. I saw the Seahawks reactions to what was happening. They could not stop Carr.

Nevermind my Seahawks prediction. Now I’m changing it to the Raiders because of their 4th preseason game. I’d also like to bet the KC Royals to win the World Series, and while we’re at it, throw in the Republicans to win back the White House.
Other teams will be dissecting that film to see how the Raiders did it, that’s all I’m sayin. Nobody has humiliated the Seahawks like that in a long time, and NOBODY had humiliated the current Seahawk pass defense like that before.

And why was he on the sidelines most of the game? It was pretty comical.
Do you think people are losing their starting spots based on last night? Does it change Seattle’s defensive philosophy? No and no. If you think differently, well, we’ll see who wears the dunce crown.
I said going in to the season that Seattle is a little weaker defensively, mainly on the D line. Beyond that, they are the same team as last year. Tough, physical, and in your face.

The next CBA, the players union needs to fix this “justice” policy of the NFL. Meaning, Goodie is judge, jury, executioner, and oh, appellate court, too. How can you rationally explain a 2 game suspension for punching your girlfriend into unconsciousness, 9 games for a DUI and some gun infractions, and a whole season for a repeat smoking dope and DUI combo screw up? You can’t. Next, Goodie will hand Suh a 1/2 game suspension for executing a choke hold on a waiter who delivered his filet a little overcooked, and an 8 gamer for a practice squad dude who got caught with PEDs…

Maybe Seattle was playing it vanilla for the sake of not showing anything to the Packers. There’s a lot of reasons why Seattle looked bad yesterday. The least of them being the Raiders are the better team. Or they somehow figured out something no one else has. Indy beat them deep last year. If you give any QB time, they’ll be able to hit deep passes.
