Rounds 2 and 3 . . . Everybody Happy?

Today’s festivities start at 3:30 pacific time.

To synopsize yesterday, no one is very happy thast Trent Baalke and the 49ers picked what is basically a 3rd down nickel DB in Jimmy Ward. It may not be terribly horrible if he’s on the field 75% of the time, as teams like the Rams will be throwing a lot, but I can’t see him taking down, say, Marshawn Lynch in the open field without being removed from the field with a spatula. Yes, there are a lot of teams that throw in the league, but there are also teams like Seattle who wear down teams by grinding games out. I don’t see Ward being a factor in the immediate, or even long-term future.

Let’s just say I agree to disagree at this point. But I ain’t too thrilled with Baalke right now.

And to summarize the draft today, the Niners hold the following picks:

I give Trent Baalke an F for this draft. Baalke just threw cornerbacks at the wall, hoping a few stick. He also didn’t address the eventual replacement of Justin Smith. I read that over the last three years, rushing yards against the 49ers have increased each year, but we didn’t address our run defense. Maybe Baalke loves Dial and Tank, but with this many picks, we needed to bring in more competition for guys like Dorsey, Dobbs and Ian Williams. That’s the direction Baalke should have gone in the first round instead of getting radar lock / tunnel vision on a DB.

The only two defensive guys in the front seven Baalke drafted to help with the run…. suck. Chris “the Cracker” Borland and Aaron Lynch? That’s our answer for a slowly declining run defense? Aaron Lynch has so much heart he left a power house college football program with passionate fans for the empty stadium of Southern Florida? Really? You transfer out of Notre Dame for Southern Florida? Was Incognito texting you? Lynch, did though, look like a beast when he played at South Bend. Florida? Not so much.

Regarding the DBs drafted, I like Acker and Reaser. One, if not both will stick. I hate the pick of Dontae Johnson. Acker and Reaser are both small school guys, and both small in stature…. like Jimmy Ward, and I hate small corners, but I prefer Acker, Reaser and Ward to Dontae Johnson (who’s 6’2″). Just from the little I was able to watch on Dontae Johnson on Youtube, he’s not good and won’t be. He’s stiff. DJ has terrible hip roll. He doesn’t have good instincts, and he looked lost at the combine. A defensive back has to be sure of himself. That’s what I liked about Terrell Brown. He had confidence. I don’t think Dontae Johnson will ever have confidence. I don’t think he’ll make the team. If you go with a taller corner as a project, he has to have confidence, and you need to be able to evaluate that confidence.

Three other things I read that I agree with. First off, the 49ers are going to need to stash a bunch of guys on the PUP because they don’t have the roster spots for all of these players. Anticipate a number of pre season injuries beating the NFL system. We always do it, but we don’t get much out of it. Has any PUP’d player ever gone on to start for the 49ers during the Harbaugh era? Not that I can remember.

I also read that Baalke must not have liked the first round talent at CB. Horsecookies. I think it’s more like Baalke couldn’t find a deal to move up into the middle of the first round. Trading Chris Borland, Sammy Ward, Dontae Johnson and Aaron Lynch for first round DB Kyle Fuller or Pryor would have been viewed as too big of a price to pay, and politics do play a part in GM decisions. But I would have traded a 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th round pick for Pryor…. especially now that I see how Baalke drafted with those picks. It wasn’t that Baalke didn’t like those first round corners. It was that Baalke couldn’t stomach paying as much as those “other” teams were asking. That was a mistake. Baalke had the picks. A lot of these guys aren’t going to make the team. A lot of these guys will be wasted picks like Darius Fleming, Trenton Robinson, Jason Slowey and Marcus Cooper.

So in this draft Baalke replaced Frank Gore with Carlos Hyde and Baalke fortified our O line with talented mid round picks. Baalke also didn’t have the stones to move up, but opted instead for a “throw shit at the wall approach,” and see what DB sticks. In addition, Baalke didn’t address our sagging run defense. But our passing attack improved with Stevie Johnson and Bruce Ellington (although Ellington better learn to run routes with a quickness if he wants to be more than just a return guy).

With that being said here’s another observation. Today begins the 49ers shift from a defense powerhouse to an offensive one. The 49ers are now stacked on offense in every way. Their defense is now the weak link. The pendulum has shifted.

I just don’t think Trent Baalke is a good GM. At least he isn’t on draft day. I’d trade Trent Baalke for Reggie McKenzie straight up any day of the week. In this weekend’s draft, Baalke has replaced Frank Gore with Carlos Hyde, fortified our O line, found us a kick returner – with what? 11 or 12 picks? I could have done better…. without a scouting department. Baalke wasted a ton of picks on guys who won’t make the team. Only thing I can say….. Thank God Jim Harbaugh has control of the 53 man roster.

7th round….. Another mistake by Baalke. I kind of like the pick of Trey Millard, FB OU. But he was just injured, coming off an ACL injury, and lSU FB JC Copleland was available without injury. Millard was ranked higher, and in all likelyhood, either FB would need to hit the PUP, but I’d rather fake injury (not beneath the 49ers to do) or just put him on the practice squad. AND I’d rather have a guy who was physically ready to play TODAY. What if Bruce Miller gets hurt? Dixon is in Buffalo. I like the pick because I think Bruce Miller is really overrated and limited, but I feel the Copeland was the better selection – especially when Copeland was healthy.

    Trent Baalke’s 2014 NFL draft =’s an F.

  3. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Wow!! …. there were some good players this year that didn’t even get drafted. 6′ 6″ receiver Brandon Coleman didn’t get drafted and signed with the Saints. My two boys, Kelsey Quarles and JC Copeland didn’t get drafted either. Copeland went to the Bengals as an undrafted FA where Hue Jackson (replacing Gruden) is likely to start emphasizing the run game more (and should because Andy Dalton sucks), and my other boy Quarles went to the Giants who love them some D linemen. Coughlin stockpiles D linemen like cord wood. Quarles and Coleman were projected as 3rd rounders. Coleman came out early. Oops!!!

The only guy I liked last year who didn’t get drafted was D’Rick Rogers (sp?). He bounced from the Bills and went to the Colts where Luck hit him deep a few times down the stretch of the regular season. Either I’m slipping or the NFL GMs are slippin’. I’ll tell you one thing…. it ain’t me.

  4. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

I’ll leave you all tonight after this momentously floppoliceous Baalke draft with one thought…. If I’m on offense, playing the Rams, and there’s a fumble, I’m not diving into the pile. I don’t appreciate my junk squeezed by other men. I’m funny that way.

In the immortal words of Roster J. Cogburn, ” I intend to stay in my own low class….. INNNN -definitely!!! “

  5. NJ49er's avatar NJ49er says:

Jimmie Ward is an upgrade over Donte Whitner IMO.
Sure, small school, under 6′ but, 38″ vert and played in 55 games in College.
He’s a tackling machine (320) with 4.4 speed and won’t have to contribute immediately as the roster stands now.

Not a glamour pick at 30 but he was right there with Deone Bucannon for me.
Once AZ grabbed Deone at 27, Baalke likely felt compelled to get Jimmie.

Spit, I figured you’d be happy with the RB.
    Hyde was a steal.
Great value there, as was Marcus Martin and Brandon Thomas IMO.
All Baalke did was play the Board, get some depth for TC and got a jump on next year with several guys that will ‘Red-Shirt’ this year.

One thing about Brandon Thomas, injury aside, he played OT and matched up well with Clowney in that Division.
He’ll likely be seen as an OG due to his height but, he’s a solid value pick that won’t be needed immediately.

    • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Ward is better than Donte Whitner? MY. ASS. Did you get some of Chuck’s Monday night crack delivered early? Ward has never even played in the NFL. You don’t know if that kid’s gonna make the jump from small school to the NFL. And you say he’s better? Donte Whitner is an established SS who played in the Super Bowl and just made bank with the Browns. Ward is a sleepy-eyed kid that nobody knows if he’ll pan out in NFL. You don’t know his NFL future. But we all know who Whitner is. “Ward is better than Whitner?” MY. ASS. But one thing we all know is that Ward was projected as a second or even third round pick. Mayock said he was a third. Baalke reached, and his ass is now out on a limb because there were other defensive linemen out there at a value. Baalke could have drafted Timmy Jernigan or Nix (who fell because of injury). Instead Baalke got radar lock on a DB and ended up losing value because he reached. That’s a bad GM move. Even an injured Nix would have been better.

Trent Baalke is a bad GM.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Of course Spit, Whitner was a high 1st RD pick.
My comparison has to do with the measurables.

I’m not suggesting he’s better, simply an upgrade in terms of speed and measurables.
Ward will earn his time behind Bethea for now.
He just had a screw inserted in his foot.

I base my opinions on the information obtained from stats.
Stats can always be misleading, no argument there.

Both Whitner and Ward are/were solid tacklers.
Ward is faster, maybe a bit taller.
Stats are stats. I didn’t mean to suggest Ward is better, just an upgrade.

        We’ll see what he comes.
I can’t fault the pick, in terms of filling a need, with a guy that we don’t have to count on to start immediately.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

As for the DL options, I think Baalke is counting on Tank and Dial to fill those needs this year.
        Nix dropped for a reason.
Strength and conditioning were the knocks I’ve read about.
I’m all about a fat man in the middle for a 3-4.
Obviously Nix wasn’t the fit for us as Baalke could have taken him in numerous spots.
Most of those decisions fall to the position coaches I’d suspect.

I wanted DT Jay Bromley from Syracuse.
The NYG grabbed him earlier than I expected him to go so, you have to play the Board the way it falls to you.
I happen to think Baalke got great value from the Board as it played out.

Again, it’s a matter of opinion, until the guys make it, or they don’t.

  6. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

When you look at picks made in RD1 by Philly and NE, Jimmie Ward was no reach.

Time will tell, as with any Draft pick.
Ward is quick enough to handle the slot too.
Typically we have Patrick on the TE anyway, so I don’t think Ward’s height will be much of factor.
I think Ward actually has an inch or 2 in height advantage on Whitner, for what it’s worth.

  7. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

“When you look at picks made in RD1 by Philly and NE, Jimmie Ward was no reach.”

Oh, okay. I see. If we compare our pick to the pick of another team that reached, our reach is no longer a reach. Is that how that works? I didn’t realize that. So if I’m less of a drunk than Del, I’m not a drunk at all? WONDERFUL!!!! I’m thrilled not to be a drunk.

You’re so full of shit. Jimmy Ward was yet another Trent Baalke reach, and if Ward doesn’t play well or crack the starting lineup in some way soon, he’s another AJ Jenkins type bust. Another LMJ.

Look at Trent Baalke’s entire 2012 draft. Look at our secondary right now. And there’s good evidence out there that a lot of the good picks by this organization in the last several years weren’t Baalke picks at all. I say Kaep and Reid were Harbaugh. Trent Baalke sucks.

  8. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Spit I see it as a value pick for an area of need.
No one knows what he’ll turn out to be at this point certainly.

The reason for my comparison to Philly and NE is simply to suggest that neither of those 2 picks carried grades for RD1.
Jimmie Ward was in that RD1-2 area.

I had figured RD2 for both Bucannon and Ward.
They ended up at the bottom of RD1.

    We’ll see how he delivers.

    • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

You see a reach as a value? Oh wait, you don’t think it’s a reach because the Eagles reached… I see. Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt. Reaches by definition are not values.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

If we’re not counting on him to start, how can it be a reach Spit?
My opinion, from that pick right through the entire Board process was, value.

Bethea is there, giving us the starter to replace Whitner.
From Draft grades posted in numerous places, Ward graded as a top tier SS.
He’s quick enough to handle the slot too.
Something we counted on Carlos to handle.
Carlos wasn’t much of a tackler either.

IMO, Ward gives us strong tackling and better coverage skills than Whitner.

Until he produces NFL stats, I can only compare his body of work through the Draft information provided and, trust that the Scouts/GM/Coaches felt he was worthy of that selection.

We’re Drafting for depth, not necessarily for immediate production.
You have to be happy with Hyde I’d think?
He was a steal, in terms of value.
It now puts pressure on Lattimore in TC.
        It’s all about competition.

  9. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Oh… this gets better. Now you want me to define a reach for you. You’re like talking to Bill Clinton. Define “is.” It’s a reach because his projection was a third rounder. And sure, I’ll give you that there was a run on DBs and that’s because they’re becoming more and more valuable. But a good GM zigs when the field is zagging and grabs value else where. That’s what Baalke should have done with Timmy Jernigan instead of getting desperate and reaching for a projected 3rd round DB. Baalke should have identified the run on DBs, then looked else where.

  11. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

When you see guys like Nix fall, look at all the guys that didn’t get Drafted at all.
Jeffcoat, Brandon Coleman,Skov and many others didn’t get a sniff.

It speaks to the depth of this Draft class in general.
I was surprised to see us hold all of our Picks and take this approach to add depth.
Not a bad way to go I guess.

Getting Stevie likely changed the Draft Board concerns for a WR while also putting pressure on Bling Lloyd to fight for a roster spot.

Several of these Picks, will Red-Shirt too.
It’s just the nature of the beast.
    Produce or seek employment elsewhere.
