I see this Season starting with lots of motion and ground attack.
Our OL is going to take time to adjust to the new system, however, a WCO should help them once Alex and the WRs get into the necessary rhythm.
Game 1, lots of Gore and Hunter, 9ers win a close one. I do expect Harbaugh to take some deep shots though, VD and Braylon will be a nice duo.

Marcus Martin for center to replace Goodwin. He’s ranked #1 center in the draft, might even be a guard replacement for Iupati if they don’t want to pay him. I like it. Quality players today. Strange positions maybe but good players all the same. That RB field is getting mighty crowded.
I watched the Jimmy Ward interviews and the kid has heart and he’s a competitor. You can tell these things from interviews. However, he doesn’t have the frame to be a first round draft choice. Baalke again reached in the first. Baalke isn’t good drafting early on. AJ Jenkins, LMJ and now Ward? All bad early picks. You can’t waste those early picks and expect to remain competitive. To draft effectively in the early rounds, you need bigger bodies. Ward will get beat up high like Whitner. He’ll have his body in the right position. He’ll make plays. He’ll be a hitter. But he’ll also be a liability in pass coverage against bigger players like Jimmy Graham, Gronk or even Zack Miller. When it’s a “go to” moment, teams will throw at Ward. And they’ll win. This isn’t small school college ball anymore. He’ll probably also (despite not missing many games in college) have injury issues in the pros because of his size. He looks like a great kid, and he can play, but he’s not a first round pick. Baalke got radar lock on a defensive back when he should have gone in a different direction – maybe a DT. Baalke should have either traded up or gone in a different direction at 30. And that’s not hindsight. I was saying Baalke should trade up pre draft.
In the second round, I don’t mind the 49ers continuing to trade back to acquire more picks because it allows the 49ers flexibility and fluidity in each draft. Nothing worse than sitting on the sidelines…. and for some teams, they have to sit on the sidelines for years due to bad trades (like the Raiders and the Carson Palmer trade). But I think at some point instead of constantly trading back, you need to trade up and acquire your need. This was the year Baalke needed to do that. Maybe he got anxious or nervous because what needed to be done was a duplicate of the year prior? (trading up for Reid). Our secondary is clearly the weak link on our team. We had the picks to trade up and grab Ha Ha Clinton Dix, Pryor or Fuller. That was the move. Instead Baalke got stuck. It happened with the 49ers awhile ago with RW McQuarters. Good GMs don’t let that happen. Right now, the 49ers’ weakest link is our secondary and there isn’t much help available anywhere. There will be no trading for a DB. Free agency is done. And now we’re on day 3 of the draft and our secondary is thin and small. That is entirely Trent Baalke’s fault. Thank god Del has undoubtedly passed out by now because I don’t want to get into a Baalke / Harbaugh war. Trent Baalke is becoming a liability.
Regarding Carlos Hyde over my boy, Stan Jean Baptiste, I love it – ironically. I like Carlos Hyde even more than my pre draft boy, Devanta Freeman. I can’t believe I overlooked Hyde. Maybe when I was doing my pre-draft research I concluded a running back in the second round (where he was projected) was too high and then I simply overlooked Carlos. But I love the kid. Carlos Hyde is double tough, passionate about the game, and he’s also fast. Maybe Frank Gore’s 6 milion will go towards Johnson’s newly acquired contract because Frank Gore just got a lot older. And what did I tell you guys? What did I write? I told you we needed a new bell cow running back because Gore was done and Lattimore can’t be relied upon. I also told you a young, stud running back would set-up the play action and make Kaep’s passing attack that much better. Clearly Baalke was thinking along these lines as well. Would I have drafted Hyde over my boy Stan Jean Baptiste? Hell yes. But I say that with one caveat…. I would have moved up to grab Fuller, Pryor or Ha Ha. Either way, Carlos Hyde was a great pick. He was a necessary pick. For those crying about a rookie running back not being able to pass block…. you don’t avoid drafting for “fear” a player can’t do something. Rathman now needs to teach Carlos how to pass block.
The addition of Carlos Hyde alone will do more for this football team than any other position. Why? One running back in the backfield who can bounce it outside, catch the ball out of the backfield and run between the tackles is a treat the 49ers haven’t had in their backfield in years. Certainly not all in one running back in the Harbaugh era. So with Carlos in the backfield, play action just got a whole hell of a lot more effective. Who’s the linebacker gonna take? Vernon or key on Carlos? And how many times has Frank Gore busted through the line and gotten taken down from behind? They won’t catch Carlos from behind. The addition of Carlos is going to allow the 49ers to score much more frequently both on the ground and in the air. And when the 49ers can score a ton, it makes it easier on their defense because opposing offenses are pressured to answer or keep up. In some cases, down by two or three touchdowns, our defense will benefit from the opposition’s offense becoming one dimensional.
There is no better pick in the entire draft for this team …. the 49ers, than the Carlos Hyde pick. You’ll see.
For as much as I love the Hyde pick, I can’t stand the pick of Chris Borland. What an absolute waste of a third round pick. I can see the position’s necessary, even if I argued against going this way pre draft, but I don’t like the player. Here’s who Borland is in my eyes – he’s a special teamer and life time ILB backup. That’s not a third round value. You can get that guy in the later rounds. You can find that guy in the 6th or 7th round. The best part about Borland is he’s a cracker. That’s his nickname…. “The Cracker.” There’s a scene in Ocean’s Eleven where Bernie Mack calls Matt Damon a cracker. That’s what I immediately thought of when I saw Borland’s tape on Youtube. Again…. like Ward, Borland has heart, but small with heart is a movie (Rudy) but it’s not what championships are all about.
The other two offensive linemen drafted are studs. Brandon Thomas is a OT, and by the looks of things a good one. I know he played OG but I think the 49ers are thinking OT in a pinch, if necessary. He’s got great feet. And I could definitely see Martin beating out drunk in public Kilgore. Unca Chuck pointed out it’s curious the 49ers went running back instead of Stanley Jean Baptiste, but I say it’s curious the 49ers picked two interior lineman over the addition of more secondary players. The one bright side? With Carlos Hyde, if he can stay healthy, the 49ers are going to score a ton of points in 2014. The secondary will be able to set back and play a lot of center field.
If the 49ers get a run game going that can take it to the house on any play, the 49ers will be the best team in the NFL in 2014 regardless if the back-end leaks like a sieve.
The addition of Johnson to me just means Brandon Lloyd can go back to acting… thank god.
And one more thing…. no way Josh Gordon gets banned an entire year. That’ll get reduced down to 8-10 games. Why? Because the league is all too aware of how Gordon effects Aldon and the 49ers. If he’s paying attention, Jed won’t let Goodell ban Gordon for an entire year. Jed should make the case that banning that Packer bag of donuts John Jolley? for his addiction to cough syrup (whatever) was a mistake and could have resulted in a tragedy for the Jolley family (even if Jed doesn’t believe this). What Jed would really be saying is, “Don’t you want to see Aldon Smith in the playoffs?” And yes, Jed. Yes I do….
