Not much to say. Despite handing Baltimore tons of points, the Niners still had the opportunity to win this game. Unfortunately, the play calling got weird on that last drive. And the drive before it. And on the 2 pt conversion. We never used the fade all year. Then we use it to no success 5 times in the red zone. Weird.

I see this Season starting with lots of motion and ground attack.
Our OL is going to take time to adjust to the new system, however, a WCO should help them once Alex and the WRs get into the necessary rhythm.
Game 1, lots of Gore and Hunter, 9ers win a close one. I do expect Harbaugh to take some deep shots though, VD and Braylon will be a nice duo.

What do you have to say about WR Robert Woods from USC?
Numbers are impressive. Never saw him play.
When I think USC, I think bad things most of the time.
Worth consideration?
NJ..Woods does have blazing speed,4.40 forty.Tall enough at 6’1 sort of,but weighs in at only 180 lbs.
They say he’s not overly physical getting off the jams from CB,but if he fillls out another 20lbs of muscle.without losing his speed,he could be special.
Also, don’t put Ex Washington State WR Marquess Wilson too far off the radar either.
His former Coach Paul Wulff is on our Staff and, the kid had some crazy numbers in a brief stint with Mike Leach.
He’s tall and needs a little beef on his bones but, he can catch and run just fine.

I’m not down with Goldson at this point. Franchise him. As for Harbaugh? Hard to fault the guy who made this team relevant in a very short time. Yeah, he had players, but so did Nolan and Singletary. If I was Harbaugh, I’d be pissed about the officiating as well. Sure, he should give credit where due, but I’m sure he’ll be more concilliatory later. Now? I’d be pretty pisssed off as well.
NoFear, look at the 2nd down play if you have the All Access thing. Look at Walker getting bear-hugged at the goal line. On the same play, Crabs is held as well. My point is, in the 1983 NFC Championship game, these kinds of penalties were called. here, they weren’t. Sure, you don;t like the refs to decide things, but really, these penalties were blatant.
Reading through the thread, a lot of you are calling for an upgrade tothe D line. Why, as I pointed out J Smith was no where near his capabilities. are all of you saying he is done, he won’t be back due to the injury? If he comes back 100% that changes everything with the Niners defense IMO. Yes they need to find a suitable back up if he goes down again, but what do you pay for a good back up??
Speaking for myself I’m not thinking Justin is done. I think that both he and Aldon were less effective down the stretch from basic wear and tear leading to injuries. If you look at the amount of shoulder injuries the team had by playoff time I think it comes from too many reps and not enough rotation of players. I presume that’s because the drop off from starters to backups is significant.
That’s why I think we need a DT and an OLB. I also think Soap is getting up in years and they need to draft a NT to replace him and/or Ricky Jean since I don’t think Ricky Jean is really big enough to hold the point on an every down basis.
You NEVER have enough defensive linemen. And Justin may not be done, but he is not getting any younger.
The 49ers should sign Goldson to a long term deal, but they shouldn’t pay him top safety money. I was disappointed with Goldson play this year. Last year, Goldson was awesome. This year he wasn’t worth top five safety money. Offer him a long term deal that’s fair, nothing more. But evaluate what’s fair properly.
Regarding Alex Smith – it’s clear the 49ers are going to play the bluffing game. They’ll say he’s ours and we’re going to sign him, hoping to trade Smith. But unless the 49ers can find a trading partner who thinks Smith 8 million a year or so is what he’ll get on the open market, it’ll be hard for the 49ers to trade Smith. Look at all the rookie qbs who are playing for peanuts and doing well. That alone decreases Smith’s value. Why pay Smith 8 million per year when you can draft a qb, get similar productivity and find a guy who might have a higher ceiling. We all know Smith’s ceiling. I truly believe the Jets are the best trade partner for the 49ers. I seriously doubt the Browns want Smith. Norv can do special things with Weeden, and Weeden’s ceiling could be higher…. for a lot less. Arizona just got burned with Kolb. Think they want Kolb II in Smith. Kolb was serviceable under Reid, but under Whizzerhurtz Kolb was awful. Could be the same dynamic under Arians. Smith serviceable under Harbaugh, but a disaster under Arians. I think Arians will look to draft a guy like Barkley and develop him. Arians did great with Luck. I bet Arians tries to repeat that same dynamic with a rookie qb in Arizona.
The more teams that do this, the less Smith will get on the open market, and Smith’s number will drop from 8 million a year to more like 4 million a year. A team like the Jets may need to make a committment to a guy like Smith to sell tickets, and Revis is available. Revis is worth a 1st, Smith is worth a 3rd if Smith is okay with restructuring his contract. The 49ers obviously think Smith is worth something or they wouldn’t be playing games in the media, but I think it’ll be tough to trade Smith with an 8 million per year price tag.
Who here thinks 14 picks will make the team? I know I don’t. I don’t think half of those picks will make this year’s team. So the 49ers might waste 7 picks. Look at last year’s draft. Gone are the days 49er fans can just say (like they have been with Jenkins) he isn’t playing so he isn’t good. Look at last year’s draft: Looney, Flemming, Robinson, Cam Johnson…..and Jenkins? What’s not to hate? Robinson is too small. Cam Johnson will never be an every down linebacker. Who freakin’ knows about Flemming? Looney looks to be a good guard for the future, and Jenkins is another quick, small receiver on a team full of quick and small skill players. The answer is trades. Move up, move down and defer, package for a first rounder. Trade for players like Revis. It’s that simple. If the 49ers do nothing this draft trade-wise, it’s weakening the team…. not strengthening it.
I know Harbaugh likes to red shirt his freshman, but this team has some holes and there’s nothing wrong with coaching up rookies and playing them their rookie years. Look at 2012 – Culliver, Miller, Hunter. We need immediate impact players on the defensive line who can learn “immediately,” from Justin Smith.
I’d also love to see the 49ers find a second tight end to start his rookie year and replace or put serious pressure on Delanie Walker. We need a tall tight end who can grab the ball with his hands above his head. Ever see Vernon Davis do that? Never.

Who made the rule that late 4th quarter fouls don’t get called, aka the team that’s ahead has license to cheat? I don’t get it. Why should the team that happens to be ahead then get that advantage? Roaring comebacks by the team down at that time should be wanted by the NFL – it’s a great story. Seriously, that policy, if it is one, is F’d up. When does it start? 10 minutes left in Q4? 5 minutes? 2 minutes? Who decides? How blatant is the cheating before it gets called? What if the DB tripped Crabby off the line – would that be blatant enough to be called? The Niners used to get jobbed by phantom calls late – Ronnie Lott and the Skins champ game comes to mind. Now, they get jobbed by a no-call on a blatant hold. Bill Pollian, the ex Colts GM said yesterday on radio that the foul should have been called, and the argument that the ball was uncatchable is irrelevant – a hold like that is a foul from the get go – and that a foul is a foul and must be called regardless of when it happens. Sure, the Niners should not have been in that position, for a ref’s non-call to decide the game. But, they played their butts off to get back into it, and to say that the non-call was justified basically says that the Ravens somehow earned the ability to cheat at the key play in the game – and that’s just baloney…
Actually, Crabs made the contact at the line, then ran a poor route, then pushed off on Smith’s helmet, who also grabbed. It was a good non-call but MC probably would have got the call if he would have flopped instead of engaging Smith. He could have learned from Akers who made a great flop before he was touched.
I’ve seen that replay many times. Crabs didn’t have the chance to run a “route”. He was held before he could head for the corner. No route was run…

And I’m down with you on those 4th quarter plays. Mangini showed all 4 yesterday and there were 4 calls missed on them. Unconscionable. Regardless of who made contact, the DB cannot wrap both arms around the WR and stop his progress to the corner. Smith does the same thing to Walker on the goal line on 2nd down. That one is even worse.
And if I hear one more time that the Niners shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place, I’m going to puke. So the team that has the lead late in a game should be able to commit penalties that won’t get called because it’s close to the end? Because it’s a Super Bowl? Fuck that. If I’m Harbaugh I’m sending that tape to NFL headquarters once a week this offseason.

One thing that’s really annoying me is Jim Harbaugh’s decision to go for 2. What’s the final score? 31-34? We go for two and also don’t kick a field goal at the end?
And I know about the safety… Going for two seemed premature.
Lots of things about JH’s decisions were infuriating. And I’m a diehard Harbaugh disciple.
Spit, and keeping in mind Shaman’s plea for a cliff notes answer, who would you like to see back up Kap next year? Tolzien? If he fit under the cap, what would be the downside to having a 100+ qbr guy as your back up? Kap is strong up top but his legs are skinny and running wild for a full season might be detrimental to his health.

Flavor – I agree that Smith is a good backup for us, but I don’t think any team that competes for a Super Bowl has the luxury of having an 8 million dollar backup. I think the objective is and should be to have all your money on the field and then have cheap backups who are ready and hungry.
I can honestly see a scenario where the 49ers pay Smith his bonus and even carry him on the roster thinking a team might have a qb need before the trading deadline. I do think, however, that Smith is overpaid at 8 million per year and that makes it difficult to trade him before his bonus is due.
If it were me, I’d simply release him and spend my time improving the team in other ways. Bill Parcels said the NFL is about acquiring talent, not dumping it. But distractions for harder accomplishments. And is it really fair to have a starter making 1 million and a backup making 8 times that amount?
If I’m the Niners, I stop with the games. I just don’t say or do anything through or with the media regarding Smith. I actively and aggressively look for a trade partner knowing that Scot Tolzien can win games in the NFL. The perfect scenario for the Niners is us trading Smith and having Kaep and Tolzien as possibly the most talented qb combo in the NFL….. for the money.

His choice will be not to sign here and wait until he’s released. I said a while ago that I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Gronkowski signing. Someone who can at least play decent if Kappy goes down. Tolzein is fair-to-unknown, so a vet backup would be prudent I’d think.

Chuck, on the 2nd down play in our final possession Walker was strictly a blocker as was Vernon on Lewis and Gore on Suggs. Crabs pushed off on the cornerback when he reached the end-zone. Moss was split wide in single man coverage and beat it on the slant and was open in the middle of the end-zone waving but Kaep never looked his way.
Maybe you were looking at the fourth down play where Walker was lined up in the slot. The contact was inside five yards (mainly) and both players were mugging the other. Nobody was really open. Lewis moved in to blitz and Iupati picked him up leaving Suggs and the other backer for Staley. Staley went outside on Suggs and the blitzer came through unblocked. I’m not sure what our order of priority in blocking blitzers is. A lot of teams would block the inside guy first. Maybe that was Goodwin’s call. If Kaep would have escaped to his left to avoid the blitzing backer he would have had a good chance to run it in on that side.

Staley slide inside not out. Gore was the blitz pickup.
Suggs was mostly a contain guy in most of his assignments.
Get inside of him, you walk in.
Lewis has no wheels to the sideline and we got away from attacking him in coverage.

Gore’s blitz pickup on that fourth down play is another good point, NJ49er.
They put a DL head up on Goodwin and had two over our left side and three over our right side. We had Vernon in tight to block the SS. So the numbers were right. Then Lewis came up in the left A gap as Kaep started his snap count and Gore, from behind Kaep in the pistol set, went right and had no one to block. Makes me wonder about his field of vision to identify A gap blitzers from his spot behind Kaep in the pistol set.
Makes you wonder just how ‘sharp’ our practices really were huh?
Stings to look so inept against guys we should have easily handled.

NJ49er, after looking at the replay again I’m pretty sure Gore didn’t see Lewis move up and thought the two rushers he saw on the left were accounted for. Gore was up even tighter than I remember seeing him in the pistol.
I agree that it was Harbaugh’s job to have the plays ready for that contingency. Hard to believe we didn’t consider the possibility of needing to score from short yardage. Knowing what to do in that, or any likely situation, instead of reactionary shooting from the hip and hoping it all works out is what the HC should be doing. But as Harbaugh says, he’s not likely to take time from his sideline performances I don’t know that he sees it that way.
