Not much to say. Despite handing Baltimore tons of points, the Niners still had the opportunity to win this game. Unfortunately, the play calling got weird on that last drive. And the drive before it. And on the 2 pt conversion. We never used the fade all year. Then we use it to no success 5 times in the red zone. Weird.
Hurts pass incomplete short middle to A.Brown was a gift . . . The only way this guy’s name would ever be in lights is if his parents had named him EXIT.

I see this Season starting with lots of motion and ground attack.
Our OL is going to take time to adjust to the new system, however, a WCO should help them once Alex and the WRs get into the necessary rhythm.
Game 1, lots of Gore and Hunter, 9ers win a close one. I do expect Harbaugh to take some deep shots though, VD and Braylon will be a nice duo.

Well that didn’t go quite as I imagined it.

Tough, tough, loss but the way the 49ers played (or didn’t play) the Ravens deserved to win this. Amazingly, the Niners still almost came back and won. The silver lining in this is that they have found their new franchise QB and that dude is a stud. The bad news is SF now has to worry about the Seasquawks and the NFC West title is definitely no sure thing for the 9ers anymore. The NFC West has come up big time and the AFC Worst has taken over the dubious honor of being the NFL’s toilet.
okay, so huge lessons to learn or correct
1. why can’t the Niners Score or defend in the first half. all three teams scored and defended the Niners in the first half of the playoff games and the SB. Why could those teams do both and the Niners could not do at least one of them.
2. a full spring training camp should just help improve what Kaep did this year
3. If Justin Smith comes back 100% that will be huge for the defense. He had no strength to push the line man out of his way. I think back to last years playoffs when he pushed the lineman all the way back to the QB and then reached out and dragged the QB to the ground with his good right arm!!
oh and I heard on KNBR Montana, Young and now Flacco are the only QB’s to throw for 11 TD’s in SB’s. Say what you will about Flacco, he is in an elite group right there. And by not signing an extension at the beginning of the year just helped his pocket book. cha ching, cha ching, cha ching!!
I have no doubt that the Niners will be in the playoffs and returning to the SB for the next couple of years.
The Niner future is bright, the Ravens isn’t as bright, but they have the trophy NOW.
Not to be a downer, but a realist here, there is no guarantee, noway, nohow, that the Niners get back to the SB for the next 5, 10, hell 18 years. They have a better shot to, with Kap and Harbaugh and Co., but they may not. It’s tough. What team has gone to 3 consecutive Conference title games? There must be a few, but the odds of doing this again next year are long. Even with Joe and Ronnie and Co. back in the golden age, they were knocked out fairly often from the SB chase. It’s just damn hard, you have to be really good, and chips have to fall right. Keven made a solid point about starts. Whatever the coaching staff is doing to get these guys to play strong out of the gate isn’t working. Playing catch up from way down is a bad way to get it done. Walsh and old Niners prided themselves on getting up early on the opponent. Those of us old enough to remember relish the days of the first Niner driver of the game almost almost seeming to end in a score, and often a TD, as the 15 scripted plays generally worked to near perfection. They have to figure out how to stop getting down early. That should be doable. The other part is how to friggin score in the red zone. That’s been a bugaboo with Alex and now Kap. I think it’s lack of skill position talent that’s a real key to that. Only Crabs has hands. You gotta get WRs in here that can fight, scratch get open and get the damn ball when it comes in. Another TO type would be good. Yep, an order of TO, hold the psycho…
I can’t believe how bad this shit hurts right now. I’m amazed at my own funk.
I have to say also that I’m embarrassed to be a 49er fan right now for one reason and one reason only – the way Jim Harbaugh acted. I respect the hell outta John Harbaugh, and not because John won. Before the Super Bowl, John was playing practical jokes on his parents, having fun in the Harbaugh bros press conference. John even apologized to the stadium official on the air moments after winning the Super Bowl. When holding the Lombardi trophy, John said, “This one’s for you, O.J.” In comparison, Jim Harbaugh was a douche from start to finish, and I sincerely hope Jim’s legacy isn’t crying for a holding call in the final minutes of the Super Bowl.
And the worst part is the body follows the head. Brooks and Vernon were in their press conferences blaming the refs. Champions don’t blame anyone but themselves. A champion would have identified earlier that the refs were really, really letting ’em play – maybe too much. The 49ers benefited also from the refs. Soap’s hit on Flacco was late. Akers wasn’t actually touched.
The reality is that either the 49ers had used up their bag of goal line tricks, or Greg Roman and Jim Harbaugh got caught like a deer in the headlights when it mattered the most. Either excuse is unacceptable.
The great thing about this season is that the 49ers have no doubt about it found their franchise quarterback for the next ten or fifteen years provided he doesn’t get killed running the football. The silver lining is that Alex Smith is finally moving on. But I honestly hope this loss forces Jim Harbaugh to do some soul searching. I honestly hope this loss makes Jim Harbaugh a better person. I’m a huge fan of Jim Harbaugh the head coach, but I’m not a fan of Jim Harbaugh the person. The difference in personalities (John and Jim) could be the soul reason John is a champion today.
The 49ers played too tight and it lead to sloppy play. Micheal Strahan, before his last Super Bowl, said, “Our team is ready: We’re relaxed, loose and ready to go.” You have to be relaxed and enjoy the moment. You have to not take yourself too seriously. That’s the right approach to winning Super Bowls. Instead Jim was all game face, and his team was all game face, and it actually, ironically, hurt the 49ers. They played a sloppy football game. And instead of having a Bill Walsh-like moment (master of situational football – roll right, look for Freddy first, then Dwight in the back of the end zone. If it isn’t there, simply throw it away), we get three throws to Crabtree. Remember Cinci? Remeber Sam Wyche saying while mic’d up, “It’s going to Rice,” then Taylor catches the slant? Jim Harbaugh either wasn’t prepared like Walsh used to be, or Jim and his coaches were caught like a deer in headlights at the biggest moment. Ironic for a guy who was all business leading up to the Super Bowl. Ironic for a guy who couldn’t even enjoy the moment.
I hope this off season leads to a lot of soul searching for Jim Harbaugh.

The coach and team were way too tight to start the game yesterday.
Tom Coughlin was too tight in Jacksonville, and it cost him. When Couglin learned to loosen up, in New York of all places, he won Super Bowls. Think the Jaguars would have hoisted Coughlin up on their shoulders? Never. It wasn’t until Coughlin became a human being in the eyes of his players and Coughlin deeply cared first about his players families and well being first (being a leader) that Coughlin won Super Bowls. I hope Jim Harbaugh can make that transition. John Harbaugh is already there…. and for now, and probably for a long while, John Harbaugh will be the better coach.
I could NOT agree more. I’ve been on Jim Harbaugh’s side for his coaching up this team for 2 years into a force, but as a human being I have and will continue to question where this is headed. The dude is obviously wound as tight as a watch spring. That has to rub off some on the players. He was that way at Stanford, where apparently he wasn’t particularly well liked, despite his success. What’s the deal with not talking to the press, even after he WON in Atlanta? He was nowhere to be found on the post-game TV acceptance of the Halas trophy. Bradshaw wanted to talk to him, but he made himself scarce. What coach doesn’t accept SUCCESS on behalf of his coaches, his squad? If you can’t handle success, even it it’s not yet the Big One, how can you handle defeat? Does it always have to be us against the world, or we can’t enjoy the moment, because we have to prep for the next one? The dude has to lighten up, at least outwardly. He got outcoached yesterday, and it’s not the first time this year. Maybe if he stops jumping up and down and having a stroke when something bad happens, he’ll be able to see better what next needs to be done, and make better on-field decisions and play calls. And yeah, he need look no further than his older brother for some tips on how to get that done…
Jim Harbaugh is the master of excuses. When talking to Tony Saragusa pre game last year they were both complaining about Kordel Stewart stepping out of bounds. That lead to the Steelers going to the Super Bowl, and Colts going home. Then, last year, Bradshaw fumbled. This years it’s the refs. Jim Harbaugh points to everyone else but himself. He needs to take a deep look inward. If he does that, and learns to control is emotions, his team will play accordingly.
I agree with all of this.
I’m tell you guys….. all of you. The issue isn’t the refs. It’s not the team. It’s not the play calling. The issue is Jim Harbaugh’s personality. Jim needs to open himself up. He needs to trust that not everyone in the media is out to manipulate him. Jim needs to learn to enjoy the moment. Jim looks at the media as the enemy. Jim looks at the media like he’s still a player and his game is not revealing anything to the media, and honestly, the media laughs at Jim Harbaugh. And Jim justifies it by thinking, “I’m being humble, it’s about the players.” But Jim’s wrong. The definition of insanity is trying things over and over the same way and hoping for a different outcome. For Jim Harbaugh to win Super Bowls he must open up to the media and actually care about them. Jim Harbaugh must put his players’ lives and families first. Jim Harbaugh must care about the organization, the community, the players, the fans and the media always first before his own goal of winning a Super Bowl. Then, magically, he’ll win one. It’s the coach’s intangibles. The coach must be a leader people not only care about but respect for the man he is. That’s what wrong with the 49ers right now? Nothing except the coach. It’s not the refs, the players, the play calling or Kordel Stewart. It’s Jim’s approach to life as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. I honestly wish Bill Walsh was alive today. Walsh mentored T.O., when T.O. was young (not enough). But Walsh cared enough to help T.O. on the human side. Bill Walsh would call Jim into his office and say, “You gotta lighten up and enjoy the moment or your team will play too tight and you’ll lose because of it.”
I’m sure when Jim Harbaugh thinks about things he thinks, “I’m going to build a team that’s so dominant I don’t have to face my detractors,” but that won’t work. Not in the NFL. I used to write that Jim Harbaugh owed it to his veterans like Justin Smith and Frank Gore to change the quarterback. Jim, to his credit, did that. But now, after years of futility that lead to the 49ers drafting high under Nolan and Singletary, the 49ers have a window. That window won’t stay open forever. If Jim Harbaugh wants to maximize that opportunity, he owes it to his veterans to change his approach to the game outside the lines.
Maybe Bochy can call him.
1st and goal and we don’t run it once… I’ll never understand that.. There is no doubt in my mind that the better team lost last night. That’s why the loss hurts so much.
It is pretty amazing that they didn’t go to the bread and butter of this team from the last 3+ years.
They choked. Plain and simple. But give credit where it’s due–Flacco was awesome last night.
Actually we did run it on first down.. But fade routes? God dammit.
Marvin Harrison was on the Dan Patrick show last month talking about the Super Bowl where Eli hit Plaxicco. Harrison said the Patriots called the “gotta have it,” play where everyone basically blitzes except two or three guys in man and those guys in man play “physical,” because they know the refs won’t call shit. Harrison said he saw that Eli was changing the play to a fade in the end zone (it was actually a slugo route), because Eli saw the Patriots were bringing the house and Marvin was yelling at Junior Seau to change the play. Seau didn’t and Eli beat the Patriots with that blitz beating, game winning throw. Enter Colin Kaepernick. On that last play, the Ravens brought the house and Colin did try to do the same thing Eli did, but Colin didn’t have a Plaxico Burress. Regarding the pistol, on the last play you can’t run the pistol with everyone crashing. I do agree that the pistol needed to be used earlier in the four play sequence, but not on the last play. Against an all out blitz, you have to throw to Moss. I don’t know why that wasn’t covered pre game. I’m disappointed with the play calling as well during the last four offensive plays, but it’s a symptom of two other problems: Jim Harbaugh’s approach and Colin Kaepernick’s inexperience. But truth be told, if the team wasn’t so tight because of Harbaugh’s approach, we would / should never have been in a position to come from behind and Kaep’s inexperience shouldn’t have been an issue. We lost the Super Bowl, the Ravens didn’t win it. 6 points in the second half?
I’ve heard elsewhere the abortive play where we had to call timeout was going to be a Kappy run.
Not sure whether the fault on that was with Roman getting the plays into the huddle, or Kaep at the line. Or just the system of calling two.
Spitblood makes an excellent point. The team, as an entity, is very likely to take on the personality of its head coach. And I, for one, have had more than enough of Harbaugh’s super-animated hissy fits on the sidelines over every call.
There should be a lot more important matters for the head coach to concentrate on than a call he can’t change. It’s football. It happens in every game. It’s one of those things you can’t control. Continue the mission and quit setting such a bad example for the young men looking to you for it. And it does give some players the idea that it’s ok to blame a piss poor performance on a quality control call. Give it a rest, coach.
Jim Harbaugh crying like a baby on the sidelines is flat out embarrassing.
The only surprising thing is that he has gotten away with it. Next season, early on, I expect early on some head referee will decide he’s had enough and throw a flag. And if JImbo says another word, it’ll be a second flag and a thumb. I think Jimbo has pushed that act as far as it is going to go, frankly.
Somebody…. I don’t know who….. but someone needs to talk to Jim Harbaugh. It certainly isn’t Baalke, Jed or anyone in Jim’s family. Jim might listen to John Madden, who’s a Bay Area icon. Jim might listen to a guy like Tom Couglin (don’t know why Coughlin would help). But I hope, interestingly enough, Harbaugh takes on more of the qualities of his quarterback, and not the other way around. I hope Kaep overcomes Harbaugh and that Harbaugh doesn’t infect Kaep with Harbaugh’s baggage. The way I see it, help or advice won’t come as a positive from a helpful mentor like John Madden. Help will come from the negative – the media attacking Jim, or a ref tossing Jim. But I for one (and I’m sure it will make a huge difference) will pound on Jim on the blogs to change his approach. Because really, I don’t see Jim winning a Super Bowl with his attitude towards the refs, media and really anyone else standing in his way. That must change. This game is about Super Bowls. Always has been, always will be.
Yeah. He has milked the “us against the world” thing and it has worked for him – but keep pushing it, and the BS will become the truth. The officials really will decide he is just an ass and tune him out. He’ll never get a close call, because everyone figures it’s just his act.
He has milked it… no doubt. But he’ll be in playoff purgatory until he changes his approach. His approach is much like Alex Smith. He’s a good stop gap to get you into contention, but winning the big one is a whole ‘nother ball game. I’m confident, though, that Jim will make the change because he has a family around him. I’m confident that Jim will see (whether it be through positive or negative changes around him) he can’t win a Super Bowl being an ass….. unless of course he resorts to taping the opponent pre- Super Bowl.

Well, there was never a fade route called from the sideline, BTW. On third down, CK tried a short pass to Crabs at the sideline that was dropped when he was hit very hard. On 4th the call was a run/pass option. CK audibled out of it.
“It’s something I audibled to at the line based on the look they gave us. It was cover zero. I was just trying to give him (Crabtree) a chance.”
But after burning the 2nd TO, they should have used the last one before 4th down. if they were stopped, one TO was worthless anyway. This can’t all be put on Roman. Call the TO, get Roman, Smith, Harbaugh, and Colin together and talk about the play to be called..

I do give Colin credit for putting it on himself at the LOS, but his wiser choice when he saw the blitz was to use the TO. But, shit- he gave it his all.
I don’t fault Colin at all. Colin actually made a veteran decision. But, in my opinion, you use all your timeouts there. You don’t just use one and not the other. You have to call a second timeout and bring the entire team to the sidelines and say, “It’s 4th, they’re going to bring the house. This is for the Super Bowl. We need max protect and we need Moss to prove he’s the best player in the game.”
The third down play was going to be a Kaepernick run. The timeout to avoid the delay penalty killed that play. Ravens had seen what we were going to do so we changed to that awful rolling to the right with only one receiver to throw to monstrosity.
Without the clock blunder, I like our chances of scoring. However, Flacco had a hell of a game, and I believe it would have been better than 50-50 that with two minutes plus left, he drives and gets the Ravens a winning FG. Flacco made too many huge plays in the playoffs this year to bet against him.
Just got home. Watched those last 4 downs again to make sure I saw it right (since I was pretty hammered by the end of the game). I can’t believe Kap never tried a run and/or Frank Gore didn’t get a chance. I still can’t believe we ran a fade to end the game. Don’t care if Crabs was held, it is such a difficult pass/play to pull off, there’s no way you try that unless it’s the last option and there’s no way you could ever wait that long to determine that.
Three throws in a row to Crabtree? Time isn’t making this better, it’s actually making it worse.
There was a lot of bad analysis last night from Simms. The worst thing I heard him say was supporting the fake FG. I get that *if you’re gonna do it, that’s the time to do it.” But the kicker caught the ball at the 24 yard line. There is no way in any scenario that the fucking kicker is gonna outrun Patrick Willis for a 24 yard run. NO WAY. Even if he was fooled (which he wasn’t). He’d have to break both legs to not catch up to him. It was a terrible idea by John H. It had no hope of working…….
Colin audibled to the 4th down call.No fade was called on the final series.As at least a couple of us said,why not use the final TO before the 4th down play? If we don’t score, the one time out is worthless anyway. The biggest decision in almost 20 years, take the TO, and give me a call. I had the perfect play- Zeke runs it all the time.Have VD run a quick slant to Winnie’s garden, stop to eat some cat shit, whirl to catch a bullet from CK, then run back to Colin and drop the ball at his feet.
I don’t have a big issue with the play calling. The Ravens did one helluva job on the interior running and shutting down the read option, at least while Ngata was in. Also, as far as the cries for more spread, we went with the empty set a couple times, it wasn’t pretty.
The Ravens were simply much better prepared for this big game than we were. It’s easy to blame the coaches for that but the players have a responsibility there, too. Too much glowing (and not so glowing) media attention has derailed many a team.
Coaches and leaders get the team prepared. The coaches and leaders were absent when the game was on the line. And really, the game should never have been “on the line.” The 49ers were the superior team. They just had way too many mental errors.
Well IMO Flacco did a lot but so does his recievers, on the one play he just threw it up there with a lot of air, Boldin jumped and so did the Niner DB, the DB even got an arm up in between Boldins arms. Boldin just out muscled the DB and caught the ball. Not a Great throw, but it was a great catch. A whole training camp for Kaep and hopefully his touch passes become better. He needs to know when to toss it up there and not fire a 90 MPH fast ball. He over threw Moss and V Davis a couple of times.
A loud Chuck like BLEEP for the game. Anyway wait until next season. Niners should do even better!

It’s all about the draft now. Terrible loss for the franchise but with so many mistakes we just kept shooting ourselves in the foot. I think Jimbo should take an anger management class. He doesn’t seem to have the ability to control his passion, which is without a doubt football.

Spit. Even though we played badly it’s still great to be a Niner fan. I kinda like it to the Dallas playoff game in the early 70’s and being an old fan now i have the deepest sympathy for the young brand new fans that witnessed yesterdays game.
My love or passion for this team hasn’t wavered on bit. Just the contrary. This team is learning and getting closer and closer to being a dynasty. All the pieces are in place, but I really believe Jim Harbaugh has a lot of personal work to do. Colin Kaepernick is amazing. I could see him widely being considered the best quarterback in the NFL very soon – better than Rogers, Brady and Brees. And that’s not hyperbole. Let’s forget all the accolades being thrown at Flacco. He’s good but he’s not Kaepernick. Kaepernick alone fires me up for next year. I feel better going into next year than I did at the start of the ’12 season. I honestly thought we’d never get rid of Alex Smith.

Just in total shock how this team was so unprepared to play in the whole 1st half.
You would have thought after the Falcon game in the 1st half,and the 2 weeks off to setup up their game plan for the SB they would have “Ironed” out these issues.

That just set the tone for the game for me.Instead of 1st and 10 from the 40, their backed up to the 15,and stagnant.Had to punt,Ravens get great field postiton at mid-field and marched on in.

Well it sure didn’t show in a “Horrible” 1st half of football.Lot’s of stupid penalties(some

This game believe it or not has 4 fucking Quarters to play, not just the last 2.They were buried in the 1st half,totally out played by Big Bad John’s Ravens as Jimbo got “Schooled” by him.
If it wasn’t by the grace of God to turn the lights off,which only helped the Niners regroup,and seemed to upset the Ravens more,this game could of been a rout.
Well, yeah. The GB game was different. The pick 6 was followed by good football at least. The Niners were never far off, and they had the lead going into half time. Things being as they should, the fumble was a killer. Instead of 10-7 Niners it becams 14-3 Ravens.
I don’t know why you guys are so worried about Harbaugh. Plenty of coaches won with that style. Gruden and Madden being two of them. Bill Cowher. What I thought was interesting was seeing John getting unravelled as the power outage lasted longer and longer. Ed Reed said it got in their heads some. The Niners certainly responded nicely. Then again, if they start the game like that, the Niners win big.
Still and all, this fucking sucks. A very empty feeling when you think there isn’t any more football. Not even the dumb-ass pro bowl. We were in sight of the peak, and stumbled. No 2nd chance. No do-over. Bleeeh. Gonna be a long offseason.
It’s a different day, and we’re talkin’ dynasty, not one. To be a dynasty, Jim needs to change his approach.
This is a good draft for defensive linemen, and I hope the 49ers go defensive lineman in the first round – packaging up picks for a higher draft choice. But the 49ers have two or three other needs.
1. Last year I was advocating the 49ers draft a big receiver. I loved Alshon Jeffrey, Sanu and Randle because they could jump and catch the ball at its highest point. We needed that this year. Look at our skill position players – Kyle Williams, AJ Jenkins, Hunter, LaMicheal James, Mario Manningham. Those are small guys. Small guys are fast, but small guys also don’t break tackles, are more fragile (like McCloughan said), and they have a smaller window to throw into. Not one of those guys is going to post-up a defender and out muscle him in the red zone. And Vernon Davis isn’t going to either. Vernon doesn’t catch the ball with his hands. He traps it. Moss is too old to be physical at the ball’s highest point. The 49ers need a physical, big receiver who can jump with hands. That’s not Mike Wallace.
2.) Cornerback. If I’m looking to make a trade, I’m seriously considering trading for Revis. Revis has one more year on his deal for 8 million a year. That’s about the savings the 49ers will have when they release Alex Smith. Who knows if Revis will come back 100%, but 8 million a year for Revis is a great deal, regardless how good he is post injury. The question is what you’d have to give the Jets for Revis. Smith and a 3rd and 4th for Revis? The Jets can’t franchise Revis after next year, so they’ll probably lose him especially when the Jets next year will probably go 4-12. So getting something for Revis is important for the Jets. You put Revis in the 49ers’ secondary and if he comes back good enough to be put on an island, that frees up the safeties to really get aggressive. I’d offer the Jets a 3rd and 4th…. maybe Alex Smith. Sure, you lose those picks after ’13, but you’re almost guaranteed a serious run at the Super Bowl, and Revis shores up a lot of problems in the 49ers’ secondary.
3.) NT. The 49ers don’t rotate enough on the defensive line. Justin Smith and Isaac are getting older. Dobbs got hurt. McDonald is an unsung stud. I think if the 49ers don’t package up picks for Revis, they should package up picks to move up in the first round for a NT.
4.) TE Delanie Walker made some nice catches in the Super Bowl and in the NFC Championship, but Walker showed his inconsistency in the GB game. His hands aren’t reliable.
I really think Alex Smith for Revis and some picks is a really nice fit for both teams. Rumors have it that Jed York wants to keep Alex Smith. Alex Smith deserves better. So do I.
Jed is keeping the interest high for a Trade partner.
Tell everyone we love him, see who covets him more.
Cleveland and KC would be nice partners to have.
Revis is worth the consideration but, he’s coming off an ACL which could take this year to evaluate.
Next year he’s free to move on, Jets can’t FTag him.
We have to make a decision on Goldson again this year too.
If it came to paying Goldson or a healthy Revis, I’m going with Revis.
Jets and Alex would be a perfect fit if not for the ridiculous guaranteed Contract Sanchez was given.
This Draft is deep in all the areas we need to get younger at.
Doubt we’d move up for a DT but there’s an excellent chance that a Top CB/S lands in our lap.
Wouldn’t pass on TE Ertz either.
3 taller WRs I’d like to see more of, Aaron Mellette, Aaron Dobson and Terrance Williams.

Let’s give the NY Jets a bunch of draft picks for damaged goods in 2013.

WR DeAndre Hopkins from Clemson is a little shorter, 6’1″ but has very impressive numbers.
I’m going to be paying close attention to WRs and DBs at the Combine.
Need to see how the 40s are run and how smooth the guys look.
Several CBs could easily transition to FS.
Goldson and Whitner are not cover guys.
We need an Ed Reed ballhawk back there that knows how to get into the passing lanes instead of looking for a lick.
Eric Reid from LSU, Shawn Williams UGA could easily be there for us.
DTs like Jesse Williams, Sylvester Williams and perhaps Kawann Short could be options.
