Game Day — Another One Bites the Dust . . .

At least I hope so. Busy weekend, so I’m getting this up early. Anyhow, I think this game will be the unveiling of the deep passing game. One that hasn’t clicked with Crabby Crabs. The NFL Network guys had a laugh at the expense of young Sir Alex by saying he can’t hit the deep ball, but he should continue to throw to the wide bodies (Staley and Ice, whose name no one seems to know how to pronounce) and forget going deep. Ha ha. Whatever. All this kind of shit works in the Niners favor, as it fuels the disrespect angle that coaches like to use as a motivating tool.

Game at hand? Well, the one thing Washington has going for them is decent pass coverage. This game will be (I think) one where the Niners come out running to bring up the safeties, and THEN go deep. The Washington offense is a definite work in progress. They’ve been decimated by injuries up front, and they gave up 10 sacks to the Bills last week. This does not bode well for Washington. They benched Gross Rexman in favor of Beck, but look for the return of Grossie if things don’t go well. I’d imagine they are going to try quicker passes to get the ball out of Beck’s hands faster than our rush, but we’ll see. Their run game is middling, but with Hightower out, it’s even worse. Matt Millen was gushing over our front 7, calling it the best in the league and they all felt the Niners take it. I of course feel the same way, and I think Braylon Edwards has a big day. The 1st 100 yard game by a Niner WR since when, the Garcia days?

You’re back, and I’m leaving… heading to Maryland via Dulles on the redeye Thursday Night for a week and a half of the in-laws. Will probably spend a day or two in DC myself. I’ll probably miss the Giants game and certainly the AZ one as I’ll be in the air. My DVR will be getting a workout.

As for DC tomorrow, I expect the Gross Man to return for the second half. No blow out, but I think we’ll win comfortably. 23 to 9 anyone?

  3. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Chuck thinks Alex is gonna get the (deep) passing game going this Sunday?

  4. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Don’t you think this “trap game” catch phrase has run it’s course? Geez, I Googled it and it seems there are like 434 trap games this weekend, college and pro… Niners/’Skins is a popular choice as one of those- Stanford/OSU as well. I think we need more stringent standards on what makes a “trapper”. Being favored seems to the only qualification. Now if Harbaugh said “these Injuns are gonna be a piece of cake”, I’d go for the trap argument. Or if the guys all got snockered tonight. In other words, I think a team has to show it’s not taking the opponent seriously…

  5. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Unlike our QB, I am a 100% believer in Harbaugh and his coaching staff. I trust his judgment, and more importantly, I trust his motivational skills. IF, we lose to the Skins tomorrow , it won’t be because of our lack of stimulus package. The 49ers will have all of they motorboats pa-pa-pa-pa-pa- in the water.

I believe in Jimbo. Wish I could say the same about our QB…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

      “Alex Smith supporters see . . .
–A quarterback who has thrown 17 touchdowns and three interceptions over his last 12 starts.
–The engineer of three come-from-behind road victories, including a game in which the 49ers rallied from 20-points down in the third quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles.
–Just two interceptions in seven games and an interception percentage of 1.1, which is second-best in the NFL.
–A completion percentage of 63.2, which places him at eighth in the NFL.
–A career-best 95.7 passer rating, ranking ninth in the NFL.
–A fourth-quarter passer rating of 104.9, which places him No. 3 in the league behind Eli Manning’s 119.3 and Ryan Fitzpatrick’s 108.5.
–A 128.9 passer rating against the blitz, ranking behind only Aaron Rodgers’ 133.5.
–An offense that ranks sixth in the NFL with a 26.7-point average per game.
–And, of course, the 6-1 record and a four-game lead in the NFC West.”
      What DT Denny sees:

      • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Not me, I’ve switched to rum not another QB, but only because there are no such liquor cabinets around here here. Whiskey being a rare commodity in these parts. But the good QB of the Niners I ain’t switching…

    • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Well this is actually an improvement Del. Not everybody is going to like every player or believe in them. That’s understandable. But excellent you see the value of old Harbaugh! Hey man that’s right on. We can debate whether Jimbo brought out the best in Alex or whether it will be good enough but nice we can agree that Coach is the real deal. Well on your way to regaining yer love for our Team. Ok then!

      Cheers

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, that came up on the last thread, Twin. For the 49ers they are all trap games until the playoffs. Shit, they are playing with house money at this point. There were maybe 27 people in the country (yeah, you and Skeebs were 2 of them) that figured this team would be around 11-5.

Back from Moraga, don’t have to deal with rogue family members . . . yay. No more driving. What a fucking mess out there.

Rob, who like today in Texas? Now there’s a state that could give a shit about PC.
Hint: I don’t think Kyle Busch is going to win.

  12. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Well, Chuckles’ point seems to be that they’re all trap games, what I’m saying is that the fucking term should be retired or at least given some definition- the accepted one, by Pro Football Prospectus is this:
” any game against a sub-.500 opponent slotted between two games against opponents who, on the season, have posted records above .500. ”
It’s not just any game where you happen to be favored…
BTW, they did a study based on that criteria and there were 474 trap games from 1983 to 2007. “Good” teams, the ones over .500, were 389-85 in the trappers, an .820 percentage. In all other games against sub-.500 teams, they had an .815 winning percentage- so they did BETTER in the so-called trap games.Even in the road trap games, the good teams were 172-58.
So anyway, today is not a trap game. We do have one coming up though- Arizona wedged between the Giants and the Ravens.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

I don’t think the Niners are overlooking anyone, maybe if they had some recent history of success they might. There are some teams besides the winners that I’d be wary of, though. I think their toughest stretch will be the last three- Seattle and St. Louis on the road to finish the season, preceded by the Steelers at home…I think having the division wrapped up by then would be a good idea…

      • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Yeah wrap it up, SEA and AZ would love to rain on our parade at the end

  15. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Rob, I’m projected to score 42 more fantasy pts than you today in our matchup. Not need to worry, I’m starting Roy Helu (who the Skins just announced will start at RB) as my flex. You have a shot. I mean go have a shot of vodka. You have no chance of beating me today. 😀

    • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Thanks twin. Daylight savings tripped me up, got outta bed a freaking hour early. No wonder the audio and vid were slow to get going. But on the bright side I do get to chat with youse guys, lol

    Coaching — advantage 49ers
    Offense — advantage 49ers
    Defense — advantage 49ers
    Special teams — advantage 49ers
    home field — advantage Redskins
East coast 10 am start — push — since we gained an hour last night it is really 11am — so no big deal

I see a low scoring game again. Last week I predicted 19-9. 20-10 was the final. Not bad. So this week I’m going 20-10 (and we’ll see if it comes out 21-11). My wish list, other than winning, is better connection between Smith and Crabtree, more carries for Hunter (I don’t want 31 carries again for Gore), continued solid line play from the OL, and DL, and to see Harbaugh and his staff out coach Shanahan. And no injuries.

Funniest DST joke came from a Kris Humphries tweet: “I’m going to try and set my clock back to 80 days ago — wish me luck!”

  21. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Denny is threatening to do Niner play-by-play on Chuck’s blog -OMG. I remember when Soph would comment on the games when Alex played- he never threw a completion- the receiver caught one from an unnamed QB. Receivers never dropped passes, Alex threw it too hard or too soft or it was perfect and they never expected that. Poor guy- Soph would assail his manhood and DT Denny would threaten his life…

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Did I say 27-3? No? OK. 27-3 Niners.

  24. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

WTF was Smith waiting for, the Second Coming?

Here he comes…Jesus H. Christ! Get rid of the damn ball already. But I’m sure TF will come and defend that play.

  25. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Ben Tate just scored a TD for the Texans, and he’s of Rob’s FF team. Not a good start for Suck for Luck. Did I mention that I started Roy Helu? He might get 30 touches today.

Too back Chuck can’t get even 1 touch when he visits the whorehouse.

  26. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Relax Dennis, that is only one possession

  27. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Good play by Alex to escape the rush and get it to Gore… not so good by Gore as he drops it.

  28. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

    Both teams asleep! Sloppy

  29. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

He fielded a punt on the 3 yd line? The Skins’ PR compounded his stoopidity by fumbling the ball. I hope a Redskin blogger is threatening his life right now.

  31. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

    Nice play Smith

  32. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    Nice spot for a safety…

    Justin almost had a TD!

  33. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Justin Smith drops an INT for a TD then commits a holding penalty. Talk about compounding stoopidity.

That Skins’ FB just leveled Patrick Willis. I’d be embarrassed if I were him.

  34. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

    GOLDSON yeah baby

  35. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Chickenshit call on Smith. Great play by Goldson.

  36. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

That Skins’ WR just gave away the fact that play was going to be a running play. And the guy he should have blocked, T. Brown, makes the tackle.

Beck is horrible. Even more so today. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Rex back.

  37. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

I expect to see Grossman in the second half. It’d be nice to have at least a ten point lead by then.

  38. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

They are supposed to audible out of runs.

  39. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

  40. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Winning points by Akers! Talk about low scoring…

  48. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    Can’t miss this opportunity…

  51. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

The Skins’ tackling thus far has been atrocious.
    Color ourselves fortunate.

  52. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Alex is showing better awareness in the pocket too, when it breaks down. He is making plays or at least mitigating the damage, where two years ago he would have taken the sack. Another area he has grown under Harbaugh.

  53. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Smith had Gore WIDE open. You guys want to keep praising him?

Wow. Wheel route for Miller. Nice.

  60. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    Beautiful TD pass.

A 13 point lead is solid at the half. One more score and it’s over.

  61. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Nice strip by Willis. TD Miller! That’s one more than Moran Norris will ever score.

Ginn got away with a pick there.

  62. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Smith was lucky that the ball wasn’t dropped, it had a little wiggle at the end there..

  63. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

If Alex had waited a little longer for the TD pass, the ‘Skins wouldn’t have had time for the FG. Mook.

  64. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

We’ve squelched their offense the entire first half until that final Skins’ drive when we went into the prevent defense and it yields the Redskins’ first and only score of the game.

I swear to Christ if I ever meet the guy who invented that prevent defense (if he’s still alive) I’ll kill that motherfucker. There. I’ve made my death threat for the day. That should keep you guys happy.

Bad thing is I’m playing another guy in a PPR league that has Helu as well. He has a like a gazillion catches already. My luck continues.

WTF did Rob go? He didn’t give me his NASCAR pick. I bet he’s selling his Bonsai trees again. I’m sure he woulda picked Carl Edwards, he ALWAYS picks Edwards. I’ll go with his teammate Greg Biffle who starts on the pole today. I’m feeling lucky. Actually I’m not, IO’m just hoping it changes with the Biff.

We are about to be 5-0 on the road, only 3 left in the regular season.

Unbelievable. We have not been this solid away from home since the dynasty years.

This defense is outstanding. Special teams are too. And the offense is good enough when it needs to be.

Two years ago, most 49er fans would have traded Alex straight up for almost any other starting QB in the league. Today, there Rodgers, and a few other guys you could argue about. Amazing. Such a turnaround for this team, so quickly. Even more so than Walsh’s tenure. And that is saying a lot.

    • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Well said, it is most surprising the turn around.

      • grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Not in my book. I’d be open to Brees as well, as he won the big one. Romo is no better than Alex right now, and has choked in the big ones. No sale.
