If I hear another presser from Chip Kelly praising his QB, I’m going to buy a pitchfork and a few torches. By just about every measure, Gabbert sucks. He has had a much cleaner pocket than Kaepernick ever had, and he still misses wide open guys and throws killer picks. He missed two passes in the 1st quarter that would have netted 80 yards at least and cost us a TD. Yeah, there were drops, and can we find a TE that can catch? But other than that, even in this game Gabbert had a clean pocket and had some nice passes through most of it, until the Niners were in desperation mode.
Some don’t cut it though. Yeah, we turned the ball over. Yeah, Hyde made a very stupid move in flexing (yeah, spearing is OK, dying in the streets of undiagnosed CTE is OK, but show some emotion? Fuck you. Two get you thrown out) as it led directly to the turnover on the tipped pass, and subsequent TD., and yeah, we fucked up again by roughing the kicker on a FG, and fumbled a kickoff.
Even still, the Niners got the score to 21-14 as the 3rd quarter ended. They even got the ball back. But just like the Dallas game, Gabbert threw a horrible INT to give the game away. AZ didn’t look back. And yet another struggling team got healthy on us. That being said, AZ sucks. They are not going to even sniff the playoffs this year.
So I don’t want to hear anything from Chip other than “we have to make a change at the QB position.” 1 and fucking 4 is not anything that should keep Gabbert starting. These last two games were eminently winnable, and we had the lead in both of them, yet shoddy undisciplined play, turnovers, and highly questionable play calling led to the lead being pissed away. Even the fucking Carolina game, we had our chances despite mistakes.
Fuuuuuuuck this. I’m getting real frustrated.
Forty Niners Forever 
I’m rolling in the aisles at certain individuals on Skeebs’ who were all in for Gabbert and insulting me for wanting Kap. I’m having loads of fun on the Webzone as a similar emotional retribution is going on. It’s hilarious how the very same people calling Gabbert the answer and Kap a piece of shit are now nowhere to be found, or worse, claiming they never wrote any such thing and never insulted Kap fans.
I don’t know if Kappy can play under Chip, with this mediocre team, the way he played before. But a healthy Kap would’ve beaten Dallas at home last week and a sorry ass Drew Stanton team at home.
I was a major Kap supporter before this year. His poor play last year was from a bad line and 3 injuries that required surgery. I couldn’t get off the bandwagon fast enough when he asked for a trade. In game 4 of the pre-season he looked terrible. Everybody watching practice says Gabbert looks much better. Might as well put him in to prove he sucks so we can move on. It’s obvious Gabbert is not the answer. Maybe Kap can get injured so we can pay him 14.5 mil to sit next year. Since I’d like to see Ponder in I guess that means Kap has to be tried first. After all, why would the coach go with the only QB who was throwing receivers open in preseason. That would make too much sense for Chip to wonder about, I think the word for ‘wonder about’ that is ponder.
We have a bad situation at QB but we have a worse situation at coach. I’m not sure if this team is better than last year’s team. I’ve supported Baalke but he did choose the coach. I think this team has some talent but Chip is in over his head.
1) I saw Gabbert in Jax. You can’t fix that.
2) I want the best player playing. Three Niner QBs have gotten us to the SB: Montana, Young, and Kap.

We have $50 mil in cap space. Kap’s contract is a smokescreen. I don’t give a damn about Denise’s money; she’s made plenty off the Niners.
I wanted us to draft Ponder. I used to root for him until he Gabberted out in Minnesota. If Kap can’t cut it, I’d have no problems rooting for him again, but I don’t think he’ll succeed.
You’re the guy who turned me on to Kap when he was in college! I can’t go back now without giving him a real shot.
The play calling certainly is weird at best. The picks once the team struggles to get back into games is baffling as well. They had a shot in all these losses. Not as bad as San Diego, but they had leads in both the Dallas and AZ games. This team is obviously better than last year. It may not show up in their record, but they have played solid at times. Much better than last year. They can’t put a whole game together. Stupid penalties, stupid mistakes, yadda yadda yadda.
This season is officially lost so they need to move on from Gabbert. I don’t give a shit who. If Kaepernick isn’t ready put in Ponder. I can’t take another game of Gabbert just flat missing guys who are wide open. And yeah, no offensive talent hurts. We have a slew of TEs who can’t catch. And Torrey Smith is the invisible man out there. I don’t think he got targeted at all tonight.
You don’t understand why Kaepernick wanted to be traded? Really? Beyond the fact that the team had the worst coaching staff in the NFL last year, and no offensive weapons, what’s to stay for?
Kaepernick signed a hugely team friendly deal on the contingency that the front orifice would do all it could to keep the team together. What happened? Well, 3/4 of the talent left, including the coach that hand-picked him. The team bad-mouthed Harbaugh and drove him out (granted, I thought it would help in the long run), and then did the same to Kaepernick last year.
The team screwed him coming and going. I’d want out as well.
What;s funny is some people think the team would be doing better if Kappy would stand up for the anthem. Gabbert would stop throwing picks. ST guys would stop fumbling the football. They’d stop getting stupid penalties. And Gabbert would stop missing wide open guys,
Ricky Waters and Dennis Brown were on the sideline Thursday night. After the game they both said Kap’s body language and interaction with team mates says he didn’t want to be there.
Kap has got bigger fish to fry. After all, he’s leading the football protest movement. When one gets that big a backup role is not very desirable.
Who wants to an NFL QB when you can be the next Angela Davis!
The problems are far greater than Gabbert. He’s just the latest scapegoat for a bad team. It’s amazing how this team has declined dramatically in a very short period of time. Remember those years before Bill Walsh? They kept changing coaches every season and the team just kept declining. We’re back to those years. No matter who plays QB this team will keep declining. The Niners need someone to come in with a vision and the practical means to bring in better players.

Torrey was targeted one time last night, He’s the one that should be pissed off. One time?! Pathetic. I’m still on board with Kelly. He’s coming into a bad situation and has to change an entire culture and that’s going to take some time. He has to get the type of players he wants in there and that’s going to take time, too.
Gabbert does need to go. His inability to hit receivers deep has left at least 3 TD’s on the field so far this season, and not at least trying to employ Smith to his full capabilities is stupid. But the Niners did attack much more downfield last night and earlier in the game. It paid off a few times, but Gabbert also missed a couple of critical throws, the big one being to Streater.
My problem is that I don’t have a lot of confidence in Kap either. I mean who do you believe, Chip, who says he’s been nothing but a model employee, or Ricky Watters, who says his body language indicates he doesn’t want to be there? Kelly is in a bind there. Gabbert sucks ass and Kap may or may not want to be a 49er and/or he may not be physically ready for game play. If any of the stuff about Kap is true, then Ponder is his only viable option, but putting him in would entail leap-frogging the #2 QB, which I can’t remember happening in the NFL. If you think Kap’s attitude is bad now (and I DON’T know that it is and I’m not SAYING that it is), check it out after Ponder is put in ahead of him.
The D had their moments, with Brock making several nice covers on deep balls, Lynch getting into the backfield and guys like Bellore playing with energy and making some nice tackles, Rashard Robinson making his presence felt. But, again, the D-line was a non-factor and Buckner continually gets himself run out of plays. Not impressed by him at all so far. I didn’t even notice Armstead in the game all night.
IMO, the whole game turned on Hyde’s dumbass penalty and Gabbert’s subsequent pick. It was all AZ after that. And for the record, I don’t give a fuck about Kap’s anthem thing and I’m tired of hearing about it. Does it negatively impact the team? I’ve no idea, but I doubt it. These guys have WAY more problems than what Kap is doing during the national anthem.

Kap is just showing us who he really is, ok fine. He’s not football ready and he probably never will be again. I think he’s an idiot and a jerk for what he is doing but that is not the only reason I want him off the team. I don’t think he wants to play for us anymore and that is reason enough for me. I don’t know what it’s gonna take for Jed to make his move but he has to do something.
Well, standing pat gets us where? Gabbert ain’t 9-33 for nothing.
Move to Ponder, then. All I’m saying is we just played 2 games that we had shots to win, and Gabbert did what he could to give them away. Stanton had a shit game himself but didn’t make stupid plays.
We could be 3-2 without too much in the way of difference. The QB play isn’t helping.
At least Kelly isn’t giving unequivocal support to Gabbert this time:
Gabbert is a perfect QB to have on the bench. He understands the O very well and is mentally prepared, which most clipboard guys aren’t. He is not a starting quality QB, the wayward throws without pocket pressure is absolute proof. The Niners gave him every opportunity to win the spot because he knows the O and is better in practice.
They now know without a doubt that he is not good enough to give them a credible chance to win games.
So what’s next?
Kap is not ready apparently and no matter what you say Chuck this protest IS a distraction. Hurting the locker room? Who knows, but Kap has a lot of focus on his cause and I don’t doubt at least some of his team mates resent what he is doing. Players are a reflection of society as a whole and using this blog as an example there are various opinions from either end of the spectrum and everything in between.
If it were my choice I would use the already built in excuse of Kap is not physically ready, to promote Ponder into the starting role and make Gabbert the back-up. That means in effect they have lost the ability for Gabbert to be the starter for the season but they know he is not up to it.
Will it work? Maybe. Ponder showed he can still at least throw accurately, whether he can do it under game conditions who knows until the time comes but Kurt Warner was a poor practice player who seized his chance when Green got hurt so anything is possible.
Niners at 1-4 and a fast sinking attendance record is bad for the future. The team is making its money anyway this season, sold out every game, but not for long if they keep throwing away games because of a poor QB and very conservative play calling.
My guess is Chip is calling what he has to because of the QB and the limited O skills at his disposal.
He has to make a change.
I agree about Ponder. I don’t know how he would do but I think he is our best option until proven otherwise.

I guess that’s worth pondering about. But remember back-ups are frequently popular until they get some playing time. Can always hope for a miracle. No harm in that.
I just watched the 1st half and half of the 3rd Q. Two major negatives of fundamental football. The D-line plays too high. Say what you want about Tomsula but we never had this problem with him as a D-line coach.
The other thing is Gabbert’s mechanics are inconsistent at best. Actually, they suck. He does not properly use his lower body. This begs the question, do the 49ers have a decent QB coach? If so, when does Gabbert start listening?
Bring back Tomsula? Yikes!

I think giving Ponder the shot wouldn’t and couldn’t really hurt the team. And, like most on here are saying

I see two areas we are better this year than last. Pinion is punting better this year and the guy on the sidelines with the water is right on the spot. Hyde got a taunting penalty, when he came off the field Rathman was right there giving him an earful. As soon as he stopped yelling at Hyde the water guy wedged right in and gave him some water/sports drink!
Looks like Kap’s contract is being restructured to take out the injury guarantee for next year in exchange for Kap being able to void the contract at the end of the year. Ian Rappaport just tweeted this.
