Playoffs?? Playoffs!!

Well that was a couple of decent games that went according to the scrip, albeit it was a little tougher for Tom Terrific of San Mateo to hold up his end of the deal. Carolina played very well until Cam Newton inexplicably misaed on 3 passes to kill a drive and threw a pick 6 on the next one to seal that one.

But Serra boy Tom Brady shredded a fairly pliant Baltimore defense in the 4th quarter after its own defense spotted Carlina 2 separate 14 point leads. Flacco looked golden at times, yet threw into double coverage late to seal that game. A fairly stupid throw to make on 2nd and 5 when you are driving for the winning score late.

Ahhh welll. It sucks to be looking in at this from the outside, but then again, there’s a tiny bit of relief that we don’t have to agonize over the outcome that may or may not be deemed acceptable.

If shit goes according to plan, we’ll have Green Bay beat Dallas, and Denver beat Indy. Then again, who knows what kind of deat Blandino cut with Jerry Jones?

How long might it take for Jerruh to lobby the Competition Committee for a change to the pass reception rule after the season?
Gotta admit, I thought that was the most dramatic call of the weekend.
Followed by the Josh Cribbs punt reception being over-turned in Denver.

Crazy Playoff phase thus far, for Dino and the NFL Officiating entity.

I hate Dallas but it’s a travesty that Dez makes a catch like that and it turns out not to be a catch. I get that it’s a rule but that’s a rule that needs to get changed, as you’re suggesting…

      • bigflavor's avatar Flavor says:

I mean, come on, the dude caught that ball. And considering the fact that it was 4th down, the weight of the playoffs, and he does THAT? I think it was one of the top 10 best catches of all time if you consider everything involved.
        And yet, oops, that wasn’t a catch….

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

        Agree Flavor –
Game changer like none I’ve ever seen before.
I thought he made a ‘football move’ by laying out for the goal line as well.
Thought for sure it was a catch and fumble.

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

When I saw the Megatron catch in 2010 that gave it its name – the Calvin Johnson Rule, I thought it was the stupidest rule ever made. For a brief time today, I changed my mind.

Karma’s a bitch! Ain’t it Jer and NJ Bozo?

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

NJ Bozo – the fat guy eating all the munchies in Jerruh’s suite, not you NJ.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

GB and Indy got some major help from the Officials today.
At least they didn’t pick up any flags and walk away this weekend.

But yeh, Dez made an unbelievable catch that ended up not being allowed by a stupidly written rule.
I can see that rule being applied to a Receiver going out of bounds but, to land in the field of play as he did, just doesn’t seem fair.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Yeh RT, I thought they were going for ‘NJ Mojo’ and opted for ‘Bozo’, so as not to be TOO obvious.
Christie’s orange sweater should have U-Haul stenciled on it, since it’s obviously available for rent.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Take that ‘lucky’ orange sweater to Dallas and load it up for the off-season 😀

  2. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Maybe the biggest surprise of the day was, Indy’s Defense and, the lack of pressure Denver was able to generate?
Didn’t see that one coming by a long stretch.
John Fox may be available for interviews tomorrow as well?

    • bigflavor's avatar Flavor says:

Or the DC. Absolutely no pressure put on Luck all game. Made him look like Peyton Manning (reg season). lqtm

  3. bigflavor's avatar Flavor says:

And why should you have to make a “football move?” Just catch the ball. Everyone knows what a catch is. If you lose it after you catch it, it’s a fumble. End of story.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

That’s the fine line apparently Flavor, they deemed it separate actions.
I too said catch, football move (going for the goal line), fumble, recovered by Dez.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

All in all, gutsy call by Garrett.
For all intents and purposes, it worked.
They can 2nd guess it all off-season now, in hindsight.
All they needed was what? 2yds?

      • Berger's avatar Berger says:

If the receiver is going to the ground he must maintain control. Dez did not make a football move while maintaining his balance. He was going to the ground, it’s a very easily interpreted rule.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Yes Berger, as written, the rule was properly enforced today.
What we’re saying is that the rule is whacked.
Especially when the guy took 2+ steps forward and lost the ball as a result of contacting the ground.
Looked to me like he has control until the ground caused the fumble.
No question it was enforced properly but, he clearly had possession until his arm hit.

What I’m suggesting is, he made a football move by lunging for the goal line.

      • Berger's avatar Berger says:

I’m OK with the current rule and I’m OK with your pined for version. All I care is that the officiating is fair for both teams.

  4. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

I don’t want Fox. He’s a great coach and deserves better than Jed publicly pissing on him after his next heart attack, inevitable after going from Bowlen/Elway to Jed/Paraag/Baalke

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

I have no interest in Fox either RT, just suggesting he might be late to the interview party for anyone else in need.
Elway sold out in FA to make the run this run this year.

      Now?
      1-and-done, game over.

I’ve been thinking Fangio all along but, if he’s not announced this week, I’m guessing our next HC might still be playing on.

      • Berger's avatar Berger says:

I was thinking the same thing. Expect an announcement Monday or Tuesday or the coach is still in the play-offs.

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

The Broncs have a very good D. Elway/Fox turned that team from perennial losers to perennial contenders again. That won’t change w/o Fox, certainly not in the AFC West.

  5. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I’m more interested in knowing who the OC is going to be more than who the HC will be.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

That comes with the HC Berger.
If they take Fangio, there’s been reports that Kyle Shanahan would likely be his choice.
If they go with someone else at HC, it’s anyone’s guess at this point?

  6. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Another play in that GB game that isn’t getting much attention is, the Julius Peppers-caused fumble on DeMurray.

Murray would likely have taken it to the house.
    Another potential game-changer that wasn’t.

    • Berger's avatar Berger says:

The blocking was good. Zach Martin even got a good kick out on Peppers, who made the play. If Murray was holding the ball high and tight like he is taught to do, Peppers gets only a hand on him at most and Murray is still running.

  7. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

I’ve seen that Dez Bryant catch highlights rerun again and again.
He took three steps with the ball cradled in this hands before he hit the groun. That’s a catch.
I don’t see how it could NOT be a catch. The “Boys were robbed…

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Yeh Snarkk, it’s just the way the rule is constructed.
      They got the call right.
It just didn’t hold up to the challenge.

I agree with you. He had control until he hit the ground. Which should have invoked the ‘football move’ aspect of ground can’t cause a fumble, like any other play following contact.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Tough break but, who cares about Jerruh? Screw him.

Now he has to figure out what to do about his Salary Cap situation.
        Good luck with that.

He might have to restructure Romo, (again), just to find some coin to pay the other guys.
