UPDATE – 9 Game Suspension for Aldon Smith (Post – Preseason Post)

Well, for good or bad, the 2014 season is upon us. The only thing left now is to see how long we lose the services of Aldon Smith, and to cut 21 other guys from the roster. That is, if Goodie Goodell cooperates. Yesterday’s laugher at the hands of the Houston Houstons was an extravaganza of 2nd and 3rd string players going against the Walmart brigade. The highlight was back-up long snapper (and would-be TE) Kyle Nelson catching 2 TDs, Bruce Ellington catching one, and Chris Borland’s 60 yard pick 6.

The Niners did what so many teams do to them, and Houston followed the Niners old (hopefully) script of winning the TOP in the 1st half, but getting held to 2 FGs, and then giving up late TDs in the half to fall behind.

Still and all, after the defense started out sluggishly, they played well these last 2 games, giving up 13 points after giving up 57. The young LBs have come around nicely, and there are some big decisions coming up in their ranks, as Aaron Lynch and Chris Borland played very well. Nick Moody also played well. The pass rush, which was missing the first 2 games was much improved, and that was without blitzing. Then again, we were facing 2nd and 3rd string QBs in Kasey Casem and Red Skelton yesterday, so there’s that. And the Raiders beat the Seahawks. Huzzah . . .

The recent wave of indiscretions and lawlessness is something they should take very seriously.
Too many guys have crossed the line in terms of behavior and conduct.

I agree that there’s got to be something done from within.
Leaving it up to Der NFL Fuhrer isn’t going to bode well for us this season.

We’ve been handicapped enough with legitimate injuries already.

Aldon and RayMc have only complicated the situation and, given away any protections they might have enjoyed, prior to Goodell going easy on Ray Rice.

He’s now in revenge mode, because of the backlash of complaints he encountered with Rice.

Though RayMc feels he’ll be heard and vindicated somehow, the Court date isn’t scheduled until 9/15 or so and, he may be prevented from traveling out of State, until said Court appearance is completed.

The only minor upside would be a roster exemption, if the League would even entertain it.
Wouldn’t hold my breath on that however.
    Talk about hitting rock bottom.
    This is ridiculous.

  2. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

I wonder if Ray McDonald punched her in the baby maker….

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Marks on her neck aren’t going to make his explanation very easy to swallow.

Bruised arms I can understand, if he’s trying to control an enraged woman by holding her at bay.

Either way, he got arrested for it and Goodell wants to make the Ray Rice decision a distant memory under his new policy.

      Talk about a long-shot.
Especially when Goodell specifically put a clause in the new policy directed at pregnant women.
Short of a video showing her attacking him, this doesn’t look the least bit favorable for him right now.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

This was apparently a birthday gathering for RayMc too.
Something got ugly between them obviously.
Curious what his team mates will have to say on his behalf, if in fact he does feel there’s a logical explanation for this.

  3. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

The next obvious question I have is, where does Culliver stand, in terms of his legal issues and Der NFL Fuhrer?

  4. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

With this many distractions (Aldon, Ray and Harbaugh’s contract), and Baalke gutting the special teams and defense while paying backups in Gabbert and Johnson 6 million collectively, there’s no way this team is winning the Super Bowl this year. Not a chance.

You gonna pay me 5 million to deal with all this crap? I rather go coach a team without all the drama. And no… Harbaugh isn’t responsible for all these distractions. Baalke knew he was drafting a head case in Aldon Smith. Baalke drafted Culiver. Harbaugh inherited Brooks and McDonald. If I’m Harbaugh, I give it the ole’ college try and then move on – letting Baalke and York clean up this mess. Me? I’d be about winning Super Bowls. You can’t win Super Bowls in SF with all these distractions. That’s not the head coach’s fault.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Thankfully we haven’t had the results of Rae Curruth, Leonard Little and Donte Stallworth thus far.
People have actually died in those instances.

I can’t place blame on any Organization for the actions of their players unless of course there are obvious warning signs in College.

Boone was a risk with his alcohol related tirades but, for the most part, they didn’t take any extreme risks to my knowledge.
Many GMs and owners do extensive background checks before writing huge checks to any of them.

Given that most of these were College-aged misdemeanor related issues, I don’t think the risks were excessive.

The NFL provides plenty of guidance, Rookie Symposiums and such, that these guys should be mature enough to understand.
      Kaep almost got bit too.
Young athletes, lot’s of $$$ and media all around them is a volatile mixture.

At some point these guys have to realize where their bread is getting buttered and grow the Eff up.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

What really comes to light in the Aaron Hernandez situation is, what the UF did to cover up the misdeeds involving their athletes.
This is more on the Universities than anywhere else IMO.

Belichick and the Pats took a huge gamble with him and took one in the face, and the wallet for it.

Also, date rapes in College are rarely prosecuted, let alone reported, because the woman feel the system is rigged.

Universities are whores for the TV revenues, fostering an atmosphere where the athletes are treated like the cash cows that they are.

Many an athlete has skated out the back door of justice, in the name of keeping the sports machine lubed and financed.

  5. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

One thing I’d be worried about if I was Goodell was a player who’d already been suspended the 6 games, then getting into an altercation with a woman a second time, realizing he’d gone too far, then getting his money’s worth, so to speak.

  6. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Ostler’s all over this ar The Chron:
    http://www.sfgate.com/49ers/ostler/article/Time-for-49ers-and-Harbaugh-to-send-right-message-5725797.php

He’s incorrect in stating that the first strike is capped at six games. It can be extended for aggravated circumstances, at Rog’s discretion.

I do believe that we should wait until formal charges are finalized at the very least. Ol’ Rog doesn’t play by due process, but everybody does for non-drug arrests. I do not know what the CBA has to say on the subject; that would be worthwhile to know.

    • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

I think Harbaugh does need to sit McDonald, and I do think Harbaugh should send a message right now…. but considering his contract, and considering it’s Baalke drafting these guys, if I’m Harbaugh my statement to the public is this….

“It’s been widely reported that I told the team I don’t tolerate domestic violence. And I don’t. Ray McDonald will sit until this matter is resolved. But regarding the rest of the 49er transgressions, from now on I will defer to the 49er front office. Trent Baalke is drafting these players and my own contract and future with the 49ers is up in the air. So, I will have no comment on future 49er transgressions until my own contract in SF is resolved.”

  7. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

I don’t know who got off luckier…. Ray Rice or his fiancee.

  8. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

An honest (are you a man or a mouse?) admission from McD to Harbaugh would put Jimbo in a real quandary, On the one hand, there’s Jimbo’s word that domestic violence would finish a player for him. On the other, any action by him could be prejudicial to whatever legal process transpires.

  9. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

    ?
    1) Jimbo told his players that domestic violence was the end.
    2) If I’m the DA in a felony case, and Jimbo has backed up 1 (see above), I’m sure as hell going to subpoena him for a statement or for a trial.

  10. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Though come to think about it, there were 3 other witnesses. What Jimbo does probably means nothing.

    • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Are you sniffing glue? It’s labor day weekend.

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Just speculating. These are felony charges, not some misdemeanor DUI. It will probably get pled down to a misde, but that depends on the DA and the evidence, including witness and other relevant statements.
Domestic violence is one of those non-PC crimes where a felony could stay a felony. Or not.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

That’s the irony here RT, Ray Rice was caught on video and still skated.
Had there been no video, there’s no story, it never would have happened in terms of the media.
Some security person working in AC leaked it, no doubt for a fee, and the rest is history.
Many of the women involved in these assaults take the side of their spouses/significant others simply to protect the nest egg.

Now if RayMc and his fiance` decide to reconcile and, ask for this episode to go away, what authority does Roger continue to hold?
Nothing like writing the rules, all the while holding the power to judge, and administer punishment.
What due process is afforded RayMc if they reconcile?

Talk about the proverbial slippery slope.

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Depends on the jurisdiction for the legal process. Some states will go balls ahead on a DV charge no matter what the witness or later victim testimony. Rog might go by that.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Needles to say, the legal system is insane enough, let alone adding Roger to the mix.
A millionaire shill for the billionaire owners.

Protect the shield, keep the revenue flowing.

Dumb move by RayMc, no doubt but, timing couldn’t be worse in terms of laying his head in the lap of Roger.

There isn’t much of a chance he’s getting any leniency, unless Ray and his lady ask for this to go away, as a private matter that got out of hand.
A witness or a video might be the only way that could even be an option IMO.

The team has to take the first step and sit him.

  11. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

IMO it shows what an extraordinary step it was for Bill Walsh to keep Dr Harry Edwards on the payroll back in the 80s.

There are plenty of support mechanisms available to these guys in terms of Team sponsored advocates to keep them from driving when alcohol is involved.

We all know the magnitude of wealth involved in this game.
These are College kids, scoring millions of dollars in many cases, because they’re exceptional athletes.
That doesn’t mean they’re mature enough to avoid walking into a bad situation.
With that comes unimaginable scrutiny from the media.

Given the recent developments and transgressions, Jed, Trent and Harbaugh, need to make a move to put a positive spin on this.

Again, I’d like to see the NFL, (Goodell), allow them the leverage to open a roster exemption and sit RayMc until the situation is resolved.

The worst part of this League is the power the Commissioner holds and, his ability to go unchallenged by any meaningful methods.

He blew the Ray Rice decision and quickly moved to save face by rewriting the rules.
The NFLPA is largely overruled before they even have a shot at defending their athletes.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Well, Goodell has no problem overstepping the law. Or ignoring it entirely to get his way. Neither matters at this point it time.

Regardless of what Ray is saying he WILL sit. There’s no way they can play him and call it due process when the team already got a shitload of heat for Aldon playing after his DUI, and Haraugh’s already stated policy on domestic abuse. The Niners have to sit him and wait for court.

Happy birthday dumbshit. Teammates were there, does anyone know if they were there when this shit went down?

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

I’m sure this will get immediate and swift attention from the 9er Brass Chuck, as it should.
Hard to know the timeline from the media reports that I’ve seen.
Very possible the group could be there at 3AM I guess?

Like with Kaep, there’s a million people asking questions before the real answers are given.

  13. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

    Here are my predictions…

1.) Harbaugh sits McDonald, Niners still beat the Cowboys.
2.) Because Baalke has gutted the special teams and defense, the 49ers go 9-7 and miss the playoffs.
3.) After the season is over, Jim Harbaugh makes a public statement that he won’t accept a new deal from the 49ers, will coach-out his contract, won’t accept or agree to a trade where he’s traded for draft picks, then he hits the open market and becomes the highest paid coach in the NFL.
4.) Jed York offers the SF HC job to Greg Roman.
    5.) The 49ers are sub .500 by 2017.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Jim goes across the Bay to Oakland?
That’s where I’d put him if he departs.
And even then, Lombardi would likely have to be the GM for that to happen.

      No way on Roman.
I don’t think Roman gets separated from Jim.
      Fangio? Tomsula? Maybe.

I just hope it’s not Mangini.

      • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Jed’s seen his fair share of defensive coordinators. It won’t be Fangio, plus Fangio’s the guy who’s super loyal to Harbaugh. If anyone on the current coaching staff gets the nod, it’s Roman. And Baalke’s looking for a puppet anyway. Roman fits the bill.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

New stadium, young QB, prestigious living area, they’d have to seek a dynamic replacement I’d think.
If it comes to that, the field is wide open with possibilities.
A bridge I’ll cross if they go that far.

I still think they work something out.
This is a perfect scenario for Jim to prove his mettle, especially with all these distractions going on.

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Well, he sure as shootin’ would have a young QB to work with. But Ground Jim would kill Carr. He needs to wing it and wing it often.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

What’s the story from the old Cal HC? Tedford?
Any credibility for an NFL move?
I haven’t put much thought into the College ranks, ala Chip Kelly but, I’m sure there’s options out West that may have had some success vs Pete?

Not sure where Mike Shanahan or Mooch would factor in, if at all, but both guys would be good considerations for Kaep.

      • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Mooch? Lol. You’re kidding, right? And yeah, Shanahan was awesome with RGIII. Only preferred Cousins and almost got RGIII killed. Tedford couldn’t make it in college, why is he a good candidate for the pro game? Why don’t we bring in Lane Kiffin?

The best candidate is and will be Greg Roman. You’ll see.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Tedford is running the Offense for Lovie in TB this year.
Have to see what that looks like as the Season gets rolling.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

I’m asking about Tedford, I know very little about him.

The line I’m pursuing is with respect to Pete Carroll in Seattle.
Might make some sense to seek someone with a track record out West.

I truly don’t have much knowledge on the College game out your way.
SEC and East Coast games are pretty much all I see.

      • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Tedford’s just okay in my book. He developed some qbs, sold the NFL some junk (Kyle Boller), and eventually ran his course at Berkeley. Nothing great. He might be a better OC in the pros than HC in college, but are you saying you’d rather have someone else’s OC than our own? And don’t give me this Berger line of BS that Roman isn’t any good. In 2012 our offense was awesome. Then Baalke decided to dump Moss, Walker and Ginn all at the same time, leaving us vulnerable to Crabtree and Patton injuries. Roman’s good. It’s just that nobody wants to recognize that Baalke sucks at his job. I’d rather have Roman than Tedford.

  14. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

That’s the rub for me regarding Roman and Harbaugh.
Is Roman doing what Jim wants or, is Roman challenged with developing a passing game?
This Season will answer some questions for me to be sure.
Our Red Zone woes need to be addressed.
We’ve got a healthy Crabtree, Anquan and options with 2 vets and 2 youngsters now.

If this Offense dies in the Red Zone again, someone has to separate Harbaugh and Roman.
Roman has been bypassed for other jobs because we’ve been going deep into the Playoffs.
Nothing wrong with that but, I’m curious to know who’s holding who back in this partnership.

    • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Bullshit. You never separate Harbaugh and Roman. You can’t. Trying is stupid. Who cares about the redzone? All you need to know is they’ve won. A lot. And Greg’s been looking and rumored for head coaching jobs in the past. It would be an easy sell for Jed York and 49er fans. And think of it this way….. The defense has been gutted, and so has the special teams (by Baalke). The only thing that’s going to win us games next year is going to be our offense.
We’ve brought in Stevie Johnson, Brandon Lloyd …. Crabtree and Patton are back and we’ve drafted Ellington and Hyde. Unlike the rest of you morons, I haven’t forgotten how good the offense was in 2012. The offense will be good again, and when it is, Greg Roman will be a hero again like he was in 2011 and 2012. Once that happens, Roman will be an easy sell to 49er fans… and he wants to be a HC. Only problem is… he’ll suck. He’s a not a leader of men. Fangio is more of a leader… but Jed York doesn’t have the insight or the skills to pull Fangio away from Harbaugh. It’ll either be Harbaugh here as the highest paid head coach in the NFL regardless of this year’s outcome, or it’ll be Roman.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Very possible, no argument, simply stating that there’s a need to develop a more consistent passing attack for me.
I’ve said many times, there’s a place for some WCO-style passing with a strong ground game.
I’d go back to the Offense Norv ran with Jimmy in Dallas.
RBs involved underneath would be a nice compliment.

To change gears to College HC prospects.
What’s David Shaw at Stanford look like in terms of NFL readiness?

  15. NoFear49er's avatar NoFear49er says:

The HC is more than likely going to get the offense he wants, especially if he’s from the offensive side of the system. If it was the odd game or two it could very well be the OC calling the game by the situation but as a system, and one they’ve run for years, if it ain’t the system the HC mandates it’s certainly one he agrees with.

From day one of the Harbaugh era I’ve tried to make the point that the HC going nuts on the sideline is a bad thing for many reasons and one of them is the example he sets for his players. It’s pretty hard to demand the players be disciplined in their play and private lives while you lose control and go apeshit all game every game. If he tried to make the point nobody would buy it.

In the NFCCG we opened four series with a pass play. Every one of them was an incomplete. We lost the game on pass plays. Still the fans cry we need more passing. WTF?

Gore always runs into the teeth of a defense in base scheme and still, after many have written him off as too old and slow, has top ten RB yards. Does anyone use their head anyomore or is it all emotions?

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

It’s not more passing necessarily for me NoFear49er, it’s a controlled game I’d prefer to see.
I accept the learning curve for Kaep as a major ingredient, Crabtree hurt and VD as the only other weapon in the deep game.
It’s been a frustrating beginning, post Alex.
There seems to be an emphasis through PS to get the underneath game going.
Good to see from my perspective.

I have no problem at all with Frank. He’s as solid as they come IMO, true baller.
With some speed added via Patton and Ellington, along with Stevie and Lloyd, there’s no reason not to expect continued improvement.

Kaep has to pick up the slack too.
I think you and I agree on the QB development aspect of our passing shortcomings.
Good to see LMJ picking up the blitz as well as seeing some action as a receiver.
If we could simply get a rhythm going with the passing game, I think many of our trips into the Red Zone would result in TDs instead of FGs.

For now, I’ll be an optimist until proven otherwise.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Agree too, regarding the sideline distractions our boy Jim is infamous for.

Thought it was totally unnecessary to get flagged in Houston during a PS game too.
Totally uncalled for and, quite frankly, extremely immature.

I can only guess what he’s like behind the scenes, especially with the reported Contract challenges.
Good Coach, quirky personality, to say the least.
We’re nothing if not news worthy of late huh?
      Geez……

    • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

      NoFear –
You’ll get no argument from me regarding Harbaugh on the sidelines. Quite frankly I’m surprised more writers haven’t ripped Harbaugh a new one regarding his sideline antics. If I was paid to write about the 49ers, I wouldn’t care about ripping Jim a new one and then seeing him in the media room. I’d write an article that Jim needs to be more like John. John’s a class act and comports himself well on the sidelines. Jim’s an idiot on the sidelines and I’m amazed he still gets away with it, frankly. I think it might take someone like John Madden or some retired sage to really call Jim out on it, though. But someone with some weight behind him needs to be critical of Harbaugh’s antics on the sidelines.

We didn’t lose the NFC Championship game because of our passing. We lost the NFC Championship game because Frank couldn’t get it going. Seattle knew Frank Gore can now only run between the tackles. They didn’t need outside contain. When Seattle’s D stopped worrying about outside contain and their backers crashed the middle, our offense couldn’t get going and let’s not forget – we run to setup the pass. We were dead in the water until Colin Kaepernick started pulling plays out of his ass. But when you ask a guy to do too much, inevitably he turns the ball over and makes mistakes. The reason we lost that game is because Seattle stopped our run …. and we’re a run first team.

Make no mistake about it… the reason we lost the NFC Championship game to the Seahawks is because Frank Gore couldn’t bounce it outside, Seattle didn’t have to worry about outside contain and they crashed their backers in between the tackles. And what was the 49er response? Carlos Hyde.

If you go back and watch that game, Kendal Hunter was effective… but seldom used.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

One thing that did bug the snot out of me in Seattle, was Kendall not being seen or considered, as a receiver, as Kaep launched the ill-fated throw to Crabtree.
Had there been a conscious effort on Kaeps’ part to check down, I think Kendall could have possibly found the end zone as a receiver.

Things that make you go hmmmmmm?
        What could have been.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

I’m also enjoying the production we’ve seen from VMcD as a receiver too.
If they can take some heat off VD as viable threats in the passing game, we shouldn’t have much to gripe about.
I don’t yearn for a Spread attack, simply a more balanced approach utilizing RBs as receivers.
Hyde and LMJ, along with Frank can all provide some contributions as outlet receivers IMO.
      Use them.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Read a piece recently where an unnamed GM stated that many of our WRs ran ‘Ghost Routes’ to allow Kaep the ability to escape into the open field for chunk yardage as a runner.
Made some sense when coupled with those of you who suggested that our WRs didn’t sell their souls as receivers on certain plays.

With the additions to our WRs group this year, I’m expecting Roman to get it into another gear.
Much of that is on Kaep and our much shuffled OL.

  16. NoFear49er's avatar NoFear49er says:

I agree with you on the passing game, NJ49er. It will come if/when Kaepernick can make it happen. I’m not surprised that WRs get tired of doing sprints up and back every play knowing that they won’t get a look, open or not. I’m only surprised that they come to the line showing so much bad attitude you know that they know they’re just running routes for nothing. And if I know it, watching my TV you can be sure that the guys with a front row seat looking for tells know it, too.

Spitblood, I guess we see what we want to see. I can assure you that Seattle’s defense always had a playside and a backside contain assignment. They had enough respect for Kaepernick’s run ability that they rarely went man under so they could stay in zone coverage allowing them to keep their attention on the QB instead of the WR. Yes, they keyed on Gore. Their game plan keyed on Gore. That’s no surprise to anyone. That’s how you stop the Niners in case you haven’t heard. The reason why you stop the Niners by stopping Gore is that we don’t have a passing game that scares anyone. The reason we don’t scare anyone is our QB is a one target guy. It’s also pretty easy to get him to go pass or run by changing alignments. Watch his eyes and you know who to cover. No secret formula or insight required beyond that. It wasn’t so difficult to get CK7 to throw to Crabs was it? We had five receivers out on that play and we could have had ten, Kaepernick only saw Crabs, and he locked onto him from the snap. That’s not because Seattle stopped our run. That’s because Kaepernick didn’t play very well on that pass play.

We gain on the run plays even though they don’t gain much yardage. It keeps the D from going to nickel or dime. It keeps setting up possible play action plays, delays and screens. and it keeps the ball in our hands, provided we can make some first downs.

    • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

I think you’re wrong. By the NFC Championship game the 49ers weren’t running the read option much anymore. The Seattle / Niner regular season game in Seattle pretty much put a stop to the Kaep read option all together. In the NFC Championship game, the 49ers went with standard run plays with Gore. That’s not to say Kaep didn’t run during the playoffs. He did. But he ran from the pocket on passing plays which is very different from a defensive standpoint than guarding against the read option, which again was non-existent in the NFC Championship game. Point being…. when playing the run Seattle didn’t need to worry about Kaep, and outside contain was non-existent. Go back and re-watch the game. The minute Gore got the ball they were daring him to bounce it to the outside.

Who said anything about read options? First series Aldon strips Wilson and recovers on what, their fifteen? We run Gore off tackle, pass to Crabs on a shallow cross and a QB scramble for fourth and two. And you think we lost because they stopped Gore.

      • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

These are your exact words: “They had enough respect for Kaepernick’s run ability that they rarely went man under so they could stay in zone coverage allowing them to keep their attention on the QB instead of the WR. Yes, they keyed on Gore.”

The only time Seattle had to worry about Kaep running was out of the pocket, during a passing play. When Gore got the ball, there was no contain. The ends crashed.

Well NoFear49er, I’ve always bought into the chess game of finding winning match ups.
For me, a guy like LMJ in space with a LB should give us an advantage.
Be it the common argument of personnel or Coaching vs player ability, something just doesn’t add up?

Hard for me to dispute the job Baalke has done acquiring the talent either.
I think he sought Harbaugh and, provided him with the OL to deliver the ground game he’s best known for.
I’m still scratching my head as to what isn’t clicking.

Another year is about to start.
We’ll see where we stand with Kaeps’ development soon enough.
If he’s able to utilize the new weapons, we should see more points and, hopefully, a little less pressure on the Defense to win close games.

We’re severely handicapped now on that side of the ball to be sure.
Adding RayMc to this pile of garbage isn’t helping either.

And honestly…. Who care is you’re running ghost or clear-out routes? That’s part of your job. NoFear -you’re great at telling people what their jobs are and to suck it up. If a receiver is asked to run 100 clear out routes in a game, and we get the W, you do it with a smile on your face. Eventually that decoy becomes the go-to route. How much do these receivers make per year? What’s our win / loss record over the last three years?

A lot has been made about last year’s offense. People are complaining about Kaep’s single reads then pull it down and run. They’re complaining about Roman and his schemes. The only complaint I had about last year’s offense was it was too complex and needed to be streamlined so new players could catch on and be utilized quicker. Apparently that was fixed this off season.

The problem with last year’s offense was two fold. Baalke gutted the skill position players and Roman’s offense was too complex for first year players to pickup the system. This year both of those issues are fixed and people will start to love our offense again… and holy shit. It’ll be the same coaches.

I can’t even tell what you’re talking about now.

Spit I’m as open-minded as the next guy when it comes to changes made to an NFL roster.
I accept it as the cost of doing business.

Contracts and Cap Mgt are no easy task, for any GM.
I’ll support the efforts Paraag and Baalke have made because, as you say, they win more than they lose.
It’s incumbent on all involved to make it successful.

Baalke has tried various pieces at the WR position, via the Draft and FA.
Ginn wasn’t the deep threat we needed and Contract expectations were a factor.
As a KR, he was excellent.
Hopefully we’ll see some success between Ellington and LMJ.

We need a better mix of deep threats and middle threats to compliment Anquan and Crabtree, who both excel at moving the sticks and getting their hands on the tough battle catches.

When you rail on the roster being gutted, it’s also been made younger, cheaper and faster.

We have talent that just isn’t producing quickly enough, I’d agree.
      Mario Manningham couldn’t stay healthy.
His money got tied up with him which prevented additions until he was allowed to move on.
It’s all a constant stream of budgeting and depth allocations.
      No easy task.

If Roman and Harbaugh have tweaked the personnel properly, the new additions should greatly improve the results.

That’s as simple as optimists vs pessimists.

Thanks for coming around, NoFear. I’ve been saying all along, that many of the pass plays were designed as one-read plays. Like the fateful last play. Like the play jon Baldwin ducked out of the way of the football because he was startled.

spit – I gotta give you credit, when you get an idea to take it all the way to the bank. In my mind everyone’s come up a dollar short. Harbaugh has made some bonehead moves, Baalke has blown some draft picks, who really knows what Parage(sp) does or how strong a pull he has with all this. And then it comes down to players, execution, and playcalling. It just comes down to when we needed it the most we choked. I just hope we never have to play Baltimore in a meaningful game again, brother John has got Jim’s number.

Seattle is going to win the Super Bowl again, and repeat, because quite frankly there isn’t much resistance. The 49ers are the Seahawks best competition and the 49ers are a mess.

Who do you blame? How do you eliminate all the distractions? Personally, I agree with drafting a team full of convicts. I’ve always believed that the every essence of a good football team is having a team full of convicts who are one step away from San Quinton. But building a team of convicts is obviously risky. Right now, the 49ers are seeing that risk materials to the tune of several distractions and suspension that are sacrificing the chemistry of different units. But you can’t really blame anyone for this. Would you go back and pick Aldon Smith again? I would. I don’t know if I would take Chris Culliver, but you can’t second guess after the fact. (I might take Culliver out behind the woodshed with brassknuckles, though).

The next area of concern for the 49ers is all the turnover and the salary cap concerns. I think there’s a very real rift between Harbaugh and the front office over keeping veterans. On the one hand, I love Baalke turning over the roster, and I side with Baalke that younger players are cheaper and, if developed, they insure the longevity of the organization. However, and it’s a big however, Baalke’s philosophy of dumping entire units at one time in favor of younger players is moronic. You don’t dump your entire wide receiving corp last year. You don’t dump your entire secondary this year. You don’t dump your entire special teams coverage units this year. The cuts need to be spread out over the entire organization. Trent Baalke clear cuts a mountain. He needs to learn to selectively cut the old growth at the right time.

The last problem that should have been fixed this year is Jim Harbaugh’s contract. I could go on and on, and have…. but if I’m Harbaugh, I’m honestly looking to coach another team without morons in the front office. You’re a moron if you clear cut a mountain. You’re a moron if you don’t re-sign the best head coach in the NFL to a long term contract – especially when you need big revenue to payoff a new stadium.

9-7, miss the playoffs, and Jim Harbaugh isn’t interested in coaching here in 2016.

It’s kinda hard to say where our glorious organization stands. I love the way Boone has developed and played but i would’ve let him sit and traded him off. With Aldon it’s a little different situation, to me he’s a truly mixed up kid, I the think he’s worth the chances the org. has given him, but there is a limit to that too. I don’t know how long of a leash they let Harbaugh have, what kind of say on drafts, and who has the real last word on cut down day but I do know we have had some great football once again. Since we haven’t even played one game yet I gotta reserve my judgment. Even if we have a sinking ship I’m gonna go down with it.
