The Draft Day That Wasn’t – Yet

So, no one gives a shit about Scott McLoughan? Fine. I’m going to steal a cue from NJ’s positional pick leg-work for the what-should-have-started-tonight NFL 2014 draft. Instead there’s a cancelled show or some shit not going on at Radio City Music Hall this weekend. Reminiscient of when the Golden State Warriors were unceremoniously  booted out of their newly built digs next to the 880 freeway by the Ice Capades during the 1975 NBA Finals. Notable in the fact that I went to game 2 at the Cow Palace. 8th grade in 1975? Shit, I’m old.

Anyhow, I digress. All the talk over the past off season has been focussing on the need for a WR or three. Fortunately, there are an abundance of them in this draft class.

Heading the class at WR are:

  • Sammy Watkins
  • Mike Evans
  • Marqise Lee
  • Odell Beckham
  • Kelvin Benjamin
  • Davante Adams

In case you’ve been living under a rock (or just not reading this) I’d love to see the Niners get Ol’ Dirty Bastard (aka Odell Backham). He’s not huge, but he’s fast, has great hands, and is a spot-on route runner. He also is a kick returner and would be able to take over for soon-to-be-missing LMJ. Watkins and Evans are too high up to even contemplate, and ODB could even go in the mid 20s, but the intriguing guy is Marqise Lee. He’s the forgotten guy who strugggled through a bit of a down season after putting up eye-popping numbers in 2012 (118 catches, 1721 yds, 14 TDs).

Kelvin Benjamin worries me. Despite his size and strength (he’d be a red-zone dream), he is far from a finished product like ODB and Lee. Pass. Davante Adams is a guy who looks to be better than his draft position indicates. Not quite the speed-burner I’d prefer, but if we are looking to let Crabs walk, they could plug this guy right into his spot. Great hands, may need to bulky up a little to beat press coverage at the line. But likely a solid 2nd round pick that will pay off big for someone.

After these guys are plenty of other viable candidates in later rounds. including:

  • Allen Robinson
  • Jordan Matthews
  • ODB’s teammate Jarvis Landry
  • Brandon Cooks
  • Martavius Bryant

All these guys bring something to the table. Robinson has the body, but not quite the speed. Matthews is big and fast but has trouble disengaging from the line (big deal inthe NFC West). Landry had a horrible combine, which could drop him, but he plays big and has great hands. Cooks is a guy who I didn’t notice til I saw his 40 time (4.33). Yowza. He’s small but extremely quick. His combine numbers may very well rocket him up the draft board. Bryant is another guy who played upder the radar but very well could be outstanding. Tall (6’3), with some size (211 lb), he put up a solid 40 time (4.42) in the combine. Great hands as well.

Late round outliers are many and varied. Ones to keep an eye on are:

  • Jared Abbrederis
  • Paul Richardson
  • Donte Moncrief
  • NJ’s guy Dri Archer
  • Kevin Norwood
  • Jeremy Gallon

Richardson, Norwood, Abbrederis, and Moncrief are all big and fast. Archer and Gallon are of the diminutive speed burner slot guys.  Since WR is such a glaring need, and since Harbaugh is hopefully going to give more than lip service to the 3-4 WR sets he is talking about, the opportunity to get two very capable guys is here for the taking. Given the uincertainty around Michael Crabtree and his status after this year looms as well.

My WR picks would be ODB in the first and Abbrederis in the 3rd (with out last 3rd round pick).

36″ vertical leap is pretty good. This guy has been steadily creeping up the draft board.

    Roman’s the problem, not Baalke.

  3. Baloney there IS NO PROBLEM.

    THIS is a problem?

Fuck get a life. You will then see real problems

not this phoney baloney “Jimi is THE Prolem” crap

Jaysus help this moron to STFU

    • Losing the BIGGEST game of the yr for three straight years is a problem. Being a pompous self-important pious prick is a problem. Being a lying asshole is a problem. But the more I think about it, maybe we’ve had this coming since Jimbo’s arrival. Karma is a bitch. And Harbaugh as we fans are getting kicked in the teeth because of his shitty demeanor. I’m sick and goddamn tired of this second best shit. You can have it.

And I’ll let you in on a little secret. “Jaysus” isn’t going to help this moron, you, Jimbo, or anyone else for that matter. Jaysus gives even less of a fuck then I do.

Waawaawaa. STFU you duck feeding loser. Stop projecting yer sorry “I’m a piece of shit whining bitch” on my team fuckwad. Fuck you Del Mar Dennis loser. Get off this blog Niner hater.

        Asshole.

Time will tell, Dennis. This is Harbaugh’s make-or-break year. He knows this. Jed knows this. Jim’s accountant knows this. If Harbaugh doesn’t bring home the hardware, then he doesn’t get the money he wants. If he doesn’t get the money he wants, he’ll either be a lame duck coach, he will accept a lower offer from Jed, or Jed will cut his losses and move on to another head coach while Harbaugh cashes in elsewhere.

Ergo, Harbaugh talking of opening up the offense. Even he has to see his tendencies have been figured out. He CAN open things up. He’s just never felt the need to go all-in with it.

    • phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

Yes. Jimi has stubbornly assumed the Schembechler -sp?- personna until it’s clearly not working and now at the last critical moment he is “willingly forced” to get creative or get fucked.

To bet against Jimi at this point only DM would do. Or other Jimi contras.

Prepare to have yer dim eyes opened.

Chuck I think you are spot on. Harbaugh has not felt the need to risk it all, preferring to play the odds. By and large that has worked for the in season W/L record and got by in the post season until it didn’t. I really feel he wanted to have more in the arsenal as the year progressed but was not comfortable doing it without it having been part of the playbook and practiced all along. I place more blame on Roman for being too conservative as a rule and choosing to use trick plays as a way of diversifying the attack instead of using a diverse attack as the standard. A young Kap has something to do with all that too but there is no doubt that they need more offense and as you say it is a crux year for Harbaugh.

I don’t know if it will bring the 6th but it feels like it’s kitchen sink time.

  5. You people make me laugh thinking Harbaugh is going to change. WTF do you think he brought along his run offense coordinator or whatever the hell they called him at Stanford in Roman? Because Jimbo knew he could continue to bully this stooge into running HIS offense.

For the love of motherfucking Christ. Wake the fuck up.

One day the line will go blank and nothing more will be heard from I Hate Da Niners ever again. When the self-destructive hate filled morons burn their final bridge of self respect and rationality there will come a great and much welcomed silence from the alcoholic.

As a former suicide counselor I can sincerely say to you Mr incorrigible asshole, professionally speaking, Go To Hell.

    Buh bye

  12. I’m confused. Who am I supposed to be again? Too much role playing going on here.

I do know one role for sure — Harrison Ford at age 71 is coming back as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII Jesus H. Christ. Is he going to play the role in a wheelchair? The Millennium Falcon just isn’t the name of the bag of bolts he flies, it’s how long he’s been flying it.

  15. What’d ya have for lunch, Chuck? I’ve been trying to incorporate more fruit into my diet. Apples, oranges, tangerines, grapes. You name it.

Kansas City faggots? Fruit? I almost had a gag. Joke, that is.

Phil did this just start today?

  17. I think these extra couple of weeks added until the draft has everyone on edge. We should be talking about new draftees now. Our biological clocks are off. We’re late for our draft period. Maybe we all should take a couple of Midol.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! POTD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take that you, you, you…. I don’t know what you are, but take that. POTD!!!!!!!!!!! For years my people have wandered tirelessly through the desert looking for the glory that is their leader’s POTD, and now Spitblood has delivered!!!! His people are free from oppression. Jacob and Joshua and ….. well that’s all I know. But Jacob and Joshua….. actually, Jacob might not have been there but Joshua was, and so was Moses. Those two have nothing on me and my people. Throw Jacob in there, I don’t care. He doesn’t tip the scales. My people are free from the worst oppression ever. You pick the worst oppression. The Holocaust? Moses and his people being forced to wander the desert for 40 years? Or is it Spitblood posting for years on Chuck’s blog without a single POTD consideration until today? Which one is the most egregious? If I were to rank ’em, I’d say it went down like this…..

    1.) Spitblood
    2.) Holocaust
    3.) Jews in the desert

    Glory to my people!!!!!!!!!!!
