So, no one gives a shit about Scott McLoughan? Fine. I’m going to steal a cue from NJ’s positional pick leg-work for the what-should-have-started-tonight NFL 2014 draft. Instead there’s a cancelled show or some shit not going on at Radio City Music Hall this weekend. Reminiscient of when the Golden State Warriors were unceremoniously booted out of their newly built digs next to the 880 freeway by the Ice Capades during the 1975 NBA Finals. Notable in the fact that I went to game 2 at the Cow Palace. 8th grade in 1975? Shit, I’m old.
Anyhow, I digress. All the talk over the past off season has been focussing on the need for a WR or three. Fortunately, there are an abundance of them in this draft class.
Heading the class at WR are:
- Sammy Watkins
- Mike Evans
- Marqise Lee
- Odell Beckham
- Kelvin Benjamin
- Davante Adams
In case you’ve been living under a rock (or just not reading this) I’d love to see the Niners get Ol’ Dirty Bastard (aka Odell Backham). He’s not huge, but he’s fast, has great hands, and is a spot-on route runner. He also is a kick returner and would be able to take over for soon-to-be-missing LMJ. Watkins and Evans are too high up to even contemplate, and ODB could even go in the mid 20s, but the intriguing guy is Marqise Lee. He’s the forgotten guy who strugggled through a bit of a down season after putting up eye-popping numbers in 2012 (118 catches, 1721 yds, 14 TDs).
Kelvin Benjamin worries me. Despite his size and strength (he’d be a red-zone dream), he is far from a finished product like ODB and Lee. Pass. Davante Adams is a guy who looks to be better than his draft position indicates. Not quite the speed-burner I’d prefer, but if we are looking to let Crabs walk, they could plug this guy right into his spot. Great hands, may need to bulky up a little to beat press coverage at the line. But likely a solid 2nd round pick that will pay off big for someone.
After these guys are plenty of other viable candidates in later rounds. including:
- Allen Robinson
- Jordan Matthews
- ODB’s teammate Jarvis Landry
- Brandon Cooks
- Martavius Bryant
All these guys bring something to the table. Robinson has the body, but not quite the speed. Matthews is big and fast but has trouble disengaging from the line (big deal inthe NFC West). Landry had a horrible combine, which could drop him, but he plays big and has great hands. Cooks is a guy who I didn’t notice til I saw his 40 time (4.33). Yowza. He’s small but extremely quick. His combine numbers may very well rocket him up the draft board. Bryant is another guy who played upder the radar but very well could be outstanding. Tall (6’3), with some size (211 lb), he put up a solid 40 time (4.42) in the combine. Great hands as well.
Late round outliers are many and varied. Ones to keep an eye on are:
- Jared Abbrederis
- Paul Richardson
- Donte Moncrief
- NJ’s guy Dri Archer
- Kevin Norwood
- Jeremy Gallon
Richardson, Norwood, Abbrederis, and Moncrief are all big and fast. Archer and Gallon are of the diminutive speed burner slot guys. Since WR is such a glaring need, and since Harbaugh is hopefully going to give more than lip service to the 3-4 WR sets he is talking about, the opportunity to get two very capable guys is here for the taking. Given the uincertainty around Michael Crabtree and his status after this year looms as well.
My WR picks would be ODB in the first and Abbrederis in the 3rd (with out last 3rd round pick).

This is playing out like I thought, The front office came out huffing and puffing about not extending him. The Niners let it float around a while that they were ‘disappointed’ they were ‘pissed off’ they were ‘not happy’ they ‘jumped the shark’ with him. The consensus around anyone who follows the team was, keep him. To lose him was to lose him to Seattle. An instant foregone conclusion. They;d jump on him faster than Bullet Bob Hayes running a go route. It’;s good cop/bad cop. Come out like hard asses, then let the reality of the deal settle in, and everyone’s saying PICK UP THE OPTION! To let him loose would be an epically bad move.
Like you said, Seattle will pick him up. No doubt.
Yep moral outrage aside it would be folly to get rid of Aldon for his destructive behavior = then it would verge on teamwide suicide greatly harming us if a division team grabbed him. We don’t need to see the movie “Charles Haley II”.
Chuck that’s the rub for me in this Draft Class with the WRs.
I too liked Odell as my first option until he started getting higher and higher up the Draft Boards.
Same with CB Kyle Fuller.
Now I’m leaning away from them, simply because I don’t want to see Baalke Trade up, especially in RD1 for a WR.
Guys I’d make a move up for would involve Defense.
Jordan Matthews and Donte Moncrief would be a duo worth having IMO.
Could find them in RD2.
Brandin Cooks is another guy likely to go earlier than I had originally anticipated.
I could live with Davante Adams over him anyway.
As has always been the case with the Draft process, GMs have to slot these guys in realistic ways as to have a shot at them.
Not many guys would pull an Al Davis move, Drafting SeaBass in RD1, no drama in that move, no one was competing for a Kicker that early. EVER.
I’d stay away from a WR in RD1 in favor of a gem who gets overlooked in the first 29 Picks.
But….Baalke runs the show and, he’s got the Picks to do pretty much anything a willing Trade partner will allow him to do.
Because the WR depth is so solid this year, I’d be inclined to look for value after RD1.
I’m thinking along the lines of getting value at other positions before grabbing need Picks.
As much as I like the improvement of Crabtree since Alex was dealt, he’s looking for a big Contract, which may not be advantageous due to timing involved with Kaep and Iupati.
I’d be happier to see Baalke get some developmental-type guys at bargain rates at the WR position.
Be nice if Larry Webster could catch too.
I’m favoring him over WR Brandon Coleman, though I have no clue how, or if, he could be utilized in the passing game.
Get the BPA, even if it’s a not at a position of immediate need.
Few, if any of these guys, will be expected to contribute right away anyhow.

Yeah, I wouldn’t trade up either. And I don’t want Kelvin Benjamin. If all those guys are gone (and Marqise Lee? Not crazy about the success rate of USC WRs), I’d go CB.
Benjamin looked good to me early on, simply because of his size.
The more I researched, the less there was to compare.
He’s very raw in terms of game experience for me.
However, as with Jerry Rice, not everything can be seen on a stopwatch.
Give me guys that love to play football.
If the SF Scouts have done their due diligence, we can only hope they find the right pieces in the places they’re slotted to shop.
I learn more about these guys from written and posted information like everyone else.

Yeah, Benjamin had a lot of drops, and his heart could be an issue.
Jared Abbrederis has a 30 1/2″ vertical jump. Shit. Phil Mickelson leaped higher after he won The Masters. White people jumping. Sidney Deane was right.
I don’t know if Don Sterling is a racist first hand or not but I do know he is an asshole and despised by his neighbors in Malibu. I visit a friend who has a beach house right next door to Sterling and I also met Sting who lives on the other side of Sterling. None of the neighbors like Sterling at all because of his unreasonable attitude. A horrible person who I heard screaming at his house staff myself in a very derogatory way. I have no problem believing what he had to say about blacks.
Sad to say it still exists 12th.
The Archie Bunker generation hasn’t completely learned what it means to be tolerant.

Yeah I met him and hung out for a bit too. He was playing a guitar on his deck and my friend shouted hi to him, Sting invited us over. Very cool regular guy. It was from his deck we heard Stirling being an asshole to his staff and my friend and he were saying how he is like that often.

I think there’s plenty of value at the CB position beyond RD1.
The CB position is my toughest area because I’m torn on height vs speed.

Good upside on the size side of the equation however.

I’m still more focused on speed and tackling at this position.
I’m curious to see what happens with Jason Verrett.
