After an unusual flurry of activity in the free agent drowning pool, the search for a speed wide receiver has reached a lull. Emmanuel Sanders agent burned some bridges after his agent promised KC he would sign with them while working out a deal with the Broncos as he told the Niners his client was on his way for a meet-n-greet.
Julian Edelson used the Niners as a bit of leverage as he sought to return to the Pats, and Brandon LaFell signed with the Pats as well. As did most of the sought-after guys like Eric Decker, Jeremy Maclin, Dexter McCluster, and Golden Tate.
Who’s left? Beyond Devin Hester and troubled and inconsistent Kenny Britt, it’s a who’s who of who? Sindney Rice, Santonio Holmes, and Jason Avant are names, but but their bodies have betrayed them. The rest are low risk-low reward types.

I had 2 problems with last years draft that are tied together. Too many injured picks and not enough picks able to contribute. No high round CB pick, which I complained about loudly at the time and which is still a pressing need this year.
When we started talking about first round pick this year I have stuck with my position that CB is where they should go. If a great prospect like Nix slid down the board I would adjust to that but all things being equal if the CB is there when they pick, either by moving up or staying pat, I would choose that position first.
The back 4 has not been that good when it counts. Statistically good and in general good but when really needed they have had big let downs because there was no elite player back there and only Reid, who played as a rookie, has the look of someone who could be elite.
I do like Culliver as a CB. He could develop into an elite CB I think. Brock is ok same with Bethea but in this passing league you really need at least 1 great CB.
Yep and that 2013 draft on top of the lousy ’12 hurts us: injured players for sure and ironically Douche Jr was yapping about our not taking a CB last year too 12. So he’s ripping Chuck off and you too? But let’s get our CB this year first off, agree. We’re not good enough to be consistently shut down as in the NFCCG vs Sea, ugh. Last year was tough = we’re not deep enough in elite players on O or D to lose a Crab or a Cully and it cost us when they went down. Luckily lots to choose from in CBs, DBs, WRs this year.

Last year’s draft? Well, they are a bunch of value picks that may or may not work out. Lattimore could be the next Gore, or he may not ever see the field. Dial played some limited minutes last year. Carradine didn’t see the field IIRC. Lemonyay had some decent plays amongst the few times he was out there. V McD and Patton contributed, but not nearly as much as expected. Both missed time due to injuries, but they jury is out on them. Cooper and the BJ are gone. Bykowski? Who knows?

This guy had a monster season last year, 1300 yds and 9 TD. He is expensive but his contract is not guaranteed so it would be a one year deal. Add Jackson to Boldin, Crabs, VD and Patton makes for a very formidable offense. Long term I don’t see it but to get past the Squawks they need firepower.
Deion was no less a headcase that they rented for 1 year and it paid off.
Not even close. Deion was actually a great teammate. Plus, he was head an shoulders above every other corner in the game.
I never liked his schtick, but he was always loved by his teammates. DSJ has complained about every contract he signs, and threatens a holdout at every turn. He drops passes, ands he’ll cost a fortune. Fuck him.
Don’t know anything about how good a teammate Jackson is or isn’t but with all those dropped passes he caught 82 for 1332. I don’t like the guys schtick but him renegotiating is not part of the equation in a trade with no guaranteed money. I believe Deion was the first player to get 1 mil per year. Jackson is not THE most expensive WR in the game but he is expensive, he is also explosive and productive.
On the O side I feel a big time WR is what they need to put them over the top. On D it is a big time CB. They have tinkered with “passed their sell by date” big time WR like Moss. I would seriously look at all the angles if Jackson can be had for a 3rd.
The rest of the team is good enough right now. Want to win a SB? These are sometimes the kinds of moves that may make the difference and it did before.
The only team I see as a possible Trade partner before Pick 20 is Miami.
Most of the top half Teams’ needs are pretty well defined and, the positions/players associated with them, would probably be pretty hard to pass up.
Guys I’d consider trading up for would certainly include Justin Gilbert, Calvin Pryor or Nix.
Maybe Dennard.
OLB Shazier is intriguing too.
He’s under sized but very talented. He’s got top notch speed too.

As much as I like Odell, I think Moncrief or Jordan Matthews would be just as productive and, come later, without need for additional Picks being surrendered.
That’s the beauty of the Draft process. Knowing where the value is and not reaching or overspending to get it.
Standing pat at 30 should give us some value without additional cost at several positions of need.
But of course, as we all know, nothing is predictable with the Draft process.
Lot’s of strange stuff can happen at anytime.
Baalke holds extra Picks and, every team could use them.

I’d love it if the 49ers acquired DeShaun Jackson. I’d love it. Why? For several reasons.
1.) For 10 million dollars a year, the 49ers would have to protect DeShaun. I thought the 49ers were almost negligent in the way they used Mario Manningham. Mario was and is a smaller receiver who can’t run routes over the middle, or be asked to take routes to the inside where he has to challenge safeties and inside linebackers. The Giants never used Mario over the middle or put him in position to be tackled by linebackers. He was a sidelines receiver, because of his build. He caught the ball and ran out of bounds. Mario was injured, I believe, on a quick screen that asked Mario to slam the ball up inside after the catch. You can’t do that with a guy like Mario (or DeShaun), but the 49ers did anyway because they weren’t and aren’t that creative with their passing game. They also did it because Mario’s salary wasn’t worthy of extreme caution. But you pay a wide receiver $10 million dollars and you better pay real close attention to how his former team used him. Deshaun Jackson is a sideline receiver who keeps safeties honest because of his threat along the sidelines, and that’s something the 49ers’ passing attack is absolutely missing.
2.) To create the cap room for DeShaun Jackson, the 49ers would almost certainly have to ask Frank Gore to take a pay reduction. And Frank would probably be a little more happy to do it considering Jackson would certainly open up the offense.
3.) Kaep would have to learn to throw the deep ball. DeShaun Jackson is a lot like Ted Ginn, with more talent and ability. Jackson is a deep threat, and he’d not only consistently take the top off the defense, but he’d also, if Kaep could learn to throw deep, create those much needed quick scores that put games away early. This would take pressure off the entire team.
4.) The 49ers have a ton of slot receivers who aren’t really slot receivers – not in the traditional Wes Welker sense. The slot is most effective when there’s an outside presence who keeps the safety respecting the sidelines. Not only would Jackson’s presence open up things for our slot receivers, but Jackson’s presence would also open up things for our running game.
5.) Pass first? You don’t put that much money towards contracts for Jackson, Vernon, McDonald, Boldin, Crabtree and Patton, and then run the ball as much as the 49ers did in 2013. Harbaugh won’t do it (much to my chagrin), but you could make a case for the 49ers transitioning away from a run first offense to a pass first offense if we got DeShaun Jackson. It would certainly be justified because of the money invested in receivers. Pass to set-up the run is where it’s at.
$10 million for one season is a lot to pay anyone, but if there is a guy who could bring a ring to SF because of all the benefits outlined above, it would be DeShaun Jackson. There’s no guarantee that a guy like Jackson would bring us a ring, but there’s no mistaking the benefits of his presence if Kaep can learn to throw deep and Roman could use him properly. Plus, he’s a Bay Area boy. Go get ’em, Baalke and maybe I won’t hate on you as much (but Chuck will and what’s not to like about that?)
A guy that might come cheaper, with similar upside is, WR Bruce Ellington from SCAR.
I could accept DSJ on a Cap friendly deal but, he’s not that type of guy IMO.

Deion came for the ring and made a big difference in ’94.
As Chuck suggested, the difference between DSJ and Deion is the chemistry factor.

It was a big deal at the time, and left a SB winning team for Dallas and a fat contract. Not saying that is bad but let’s keep it real. It is possible some rookie can come in and be amazing, Moss did, but statistically it ain’t going to happen, rookie’s rarely make the impact Jackson made last year. I don’t like paying such a large contract, but weigh that against another “close but no cigar” season. Niners have been so close 3 years in a row, maybe this is the nudge they need?

You make some good points and the beginning of a solid (arguably) case for bringing him in here. Chuck sez he’s a pain but maybe getting him back in Bay Area on a good team settles him down. Players under Jimi seem to keep the gripes to a minimum and pull together for the common good. Maybe DSJ will take a turn for the better if under the Hendrix influence? We do have a cohesive, supportive group here and that’s part of being a great coach.
Even with Rogers’ $6 mill available after June 1, I really doubt they do the DSJ deal. I think we have $3.5 mill now, so that would eat up all the money. Yeah we desperately need a deep guy, but DSJ would be complaining by week 4 if he didn’t have enough catches. And it’ll go on all year. Then the loafing, lollygagging, on and on. Fuck it. Draft a fast guy. Cheaper and easier.
As good or bad as that is (every WR has said something like that) it would be way too much scratch to commit to a habitual whiner. But Moss, for all his lousy numbers, certainly drew attention when he was out there. Something that they sorely missed last year.
Couple of things to think about, Chuck….
Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson both had roughly 750 yards receiving in their rookie years. Calvin caught 4 touchdowns, while Larry doubled that number with 8. And those guys were top five receivers. If the 49ers moved up to draft a top five receiver, they’d have to pay more than Jackson’s asking price of a 3rd and change – a lot more. And it’s not a guarantee that rookie receiver would reach those numbers. Calvin and Larry are freaks, and their numbers as rookies weren’t enough, in my opinion, to get the 49ers a ring. Logically the production numbers would decline the lower you’d go into the first round.
I think the 49ers could approach a number of different players about restructuring their deals to bring in a talent like Jackson, and I do think players would be open to doing so if the player was perceived, as Jackson is, to be a big play maker. Willis, Staley, Gore, Bowman and others might consider restructuring; however, to me, restructuring is synonymous with mortgaging, and if you mortgage you better be prepared to maximize DeShaun’s talents as well as Chip Kelly’s offense did. And Roman is no Chip Kelly. This is my only real concern about acquiring Jackson. Mortgaging is okay if you maximize. If he’s Ted Ginn, it’s obviously a bad move.
Regarding DeShaun being a Diva, I don’t buy this argument. I don’t like mortgaging without maximizing, but I don’t buy that DeShaun would bring his same act to SF. Because DeShaun is out of guaranteed money on his contract, and especially after he was traded to SF (if he’s traded), DeShaun would be all too aware that he’s auditioning for his next job, and part of the package is, and would be, his attitude. I think he’d tone it down for a year. In addition, the 49ers aren’t the Eagles. We have Willis, Bowman, Boldin, Vernon, Staley, Gore and others who are here now only to win Super Bowls. They have the taste, the sting, of losing big games and want the ring. For leadership the Eagles had Micheal Vick. He killed dogs. Our leadership, coupled with DeShaun displaying his talents for future free agency, would keep him in check.
There’s one other possibility to consider. It’s possible that Chip Kelly is just telling Jackson, through the media, to cool it. ESPN reported that Kelly prefers bigger wide receivers who can do more than just run the sidelines. However, I think this is a bluff. Jackson is perfect for Kelly’s offense because he keeps the safety in the center of the field, opening things up for McCoy underneath. I think Kelly knows that Jackson is in a contract without guarantees and is telling Jackson to chill out. I think Kelly loves the production Jackson brings to the table in his offense, and I think Kelly would be crazy to let Jackson go for 3rd round pick and change. You remove Jackson from that offense and McCoy isn’t nearly as dynamic, even with Sproles, because then there’s a safety in the box. Maclin and that dude from the KKK aren’t Jackson. I’d be surprised if Jackson is traded. But stranger things have happened.
From the 49ers’ stand point, a 3rd and change is easy to do. It’s the money that’s hard. If I was Chip Kelly, I’d want at least the compensation for Jackson that the 49ers got for Alex Smith. I’d be asking for a couple of second round picks.

Crimea was handled perfectly by Obama. He had a measured response and needed Chancellor Merkle (sp?) in Germany. At first she wasn’t on board – luke warm to sanctions. That might have been because she wanted to see how Obama would respond. She knew Obama needed Russia for peace in Syria and with Iran. Obama, unlike Bush or McCain would have, responded with a cool, calm and collected, “What Putin is doing isn’t that smart.” Obama said in the long run this will hurt Putin and Russia, and then Merkle jumped on board because Obama didn’t do what Republicans would do, “escalate this to the brink of war.” So now we have Germany, who will btw be hurt by sanctions because they buy gas from Russia, joining in the effort to sanction Russia, and that’s huge because what Germany does the rest of Europe follows. And now the war mongers, who were calling Obama weak have been exposed as war mongers. John McCain? That guy’s insane. And to think he was almost president. Yikes!

Size-wise, he’s not far off in that group either.

Get him cheap enough and let him learn, while handling KR duties perhaps?

LMJ is also a 5’9″ guy.
Obviously LMJ had all sorts of rushing numbers to his credit.
My feeling is, if LMJ isn’t happy with his role and can’t crack the RB depth chart, maybe they look to a more polished KR option at another position?

All of these guys run in the 4.3-4.4 range too.
I was disappointed with Davante Adams and Jarvis Landry.
Those 2 ran like they were dragging furniture at Indy.
Ellington and Beckham did very well in the Shuttle and Cone drills also.
Good indicator for change of direction quickness.
Ellington put up 15 reps to Beckhams’ 7 too.
Stats are fun but, we don’t get to evaluate the ‘football-mind’ each of these guys brings to the Scouting process.
He got drilled in the knee by a LB going inside on a slant, way I remember it. Injury like that in the old days woulda been a bench clearing altercation as someone mentioned at the time. Niners O shrugged and walked off the field. I found that odd = gutless actually? Cheap shot
Another guy on the radar from the WR group, that put up monster numbers was John Brown from Pitt State.
4.34 40 in Indy and, over 4000 receiving yards in College.
Add to that, 18.9 YPC and 41 TDs.
There’s going to be all sorts of bargain guys, if Baalke isn’t focusing on someone specific, at the top end of the Board.
Comparisons based strictly on the Combine Stats are also misleading, because the concencus top WR, Sammy Watkins, isn’t even in the conversation with some of these guys.
He’s behind in the shuttle/cone and vert comparisons while posting 14.1 YPC 27 TDs.
It always comes down to the scheme these guys fit into and, the ‘want it’ factor in terms of the work needed to succeed as a Pro.
Davante Adams had huge numbers in the system he played in at Fresno St.
And, he did it in 2yrs.
233 Receptions 3,031 YDS 13.0 YPC and 38 TDs.
If you can live with his slow 40, which we are with Crabtree and Boldin, he’s obviously worth a look.

I hope we don’t consider Jackson. Plenty of others still out there that would be a better fit and play for plenty less. And then there’s the thing about getting the QB to look his way.

Exactly. If there are more than a couple games where Crabs gets 6 passes, and DSJ gets 2, the bitching will commence. And it will only get louder through the year.
As I said, I thought Sanders would have been a good fit, but they seem to be looking draftward for their WRs. For good or (mostly) bad.
Drafting is necessary but rookie wide outs bust as much as QBs. The transition to the NFL is most difficult there. A vet is probably a better way to go if you really want to increase the weapons, at least in the short term. Kenny Britt and/or Josh Morgan would be worth looking at.
Britt’s got the most upside. He’s a walking arrest warrant, though. The deal is, if they were going to do something, they could have already.
