After an unusual flurry of activity in the free agent drowning pool, the search for a speed wide receiver has reached a lull. Emmanuel Sanders agent burned some bridges after his agent promised KC he would sign with them while working out a deal with the Broncos as he told the Niners his client was on his way for a meet-n-greet.
Julian Edelson used the Niners as a bit of leverage as he sought to return to the Pats, and Brandon LaFell signed with the Pats as well. As did most of the sought-after guys like Eric Decker, Jeremy Maclin, Dexter McCluster, and Golden Tate.
Who’s left? Beyond Devin Hester and troubled and inconsistent Kenny Britt, it’s a who’s who of who? Sindney Rice, Santonio Holmes, and Jason Avant are names, but but their bodies have betrayed them. The rest are low risk-low reward types.

What about Patton? This guy to me is an unknown after a year in the fold. The foot injury basically kept him off the radar for the whole season, the last 2 or 3 games where he played some didn’t mean much either way, IMO. I don’t have a clue whether this guy will be a contributor. All I know is he’s not a burner, and for the umpteenth time, the Niners need one…
Yeah I’m interested to see what Patton has. I was unimpressed with Baldwin who seem’s to have all the tools but is not effective. Agree they need a burner but not just as a decoy.

Patton made a couple nice catches, once he got on the field. There is a bit of guarded hope there. With the inactivity around free agent WRs not named Anquan Boldin, it sure doesn’t look like they are deperately seeking a WR. This likely trickles to the draft.
They keep saying BPA BPA BPA, but I’m getting more and more convinced they are going CB in the 1st.
The trick would be to duplicate their draft board. Contrary to popular belief it’s not just Baalke sitting in a sound-proof and secure under-ground bunker making picks. Even still, the teams picking before do unpredictable things and teams call and are called for various pick options.
With the way they’ve countered losses of vets in FA it’s hard to think they will let a guy they’ve graded as a first rounder sit while they pick a CB rated as a 2nd rounder.
I guess it’s always BPA if you let the team decide what best is, Kiper’s slotting notwithstanding.

BPA always? Well, no. Last year their obvious need was a free safety. They traded up and got their guy. Was he BPA? No. BPA for them? Sure. Splitting hairs? I don’t know. Who was the GM who railed on Mel Kiper? That was too funny. Was it Bill Polian?
I mean, I’d love for them to get Justin Gilbert, and if he falls to 15-16, I’d think they’d make a big push for him like last year’s move for Reid. But I think he goes way before we even have a shot. On top of that is Carolina has already said they are looking to draft a CB 2 spots in front of them. Maybe they move up to get Kyle Fuller or Dennard.
If they are all gone, do they swoop down on Odell Beckham if there? Sure. That’s a BPA move for their need.

Could see the Niners takin NT Louis Nix. Hell of a run stopper, 2 gap specialist with 331 pounds of beef at 6’2 that teams might have to double team at the point of attack, won’t get sacks, but he will free up our other rushers.
BPA works best when a team has a number of needs. The Niners have very limited needs to they take BPA for a position of need. WR, CB. If something crazy happened and Nix really slid down the board they probably grab him since CB and WR has a lot of depth. Safety is not a position of need exactly since they took Bethea but it is a future need.

I always laugh at the BPA argument. If the Niners were on the clock when they had Montana and Young, if the best player available were a QB, would they take the QB? Hell no, they didn’t need a third great QB. You take the BPA for the need you have…

I just looked at the Niner picks order, hadn’t really paid that much attention before. After the 30th in the 1st round, they’ve got a real cluster of picks: 56, 61, 77, 94. That’s a darn good series of high picks. If they don’t trade up using one or more, that string of picks should generate some really good players. After Rogers’ salary comes of in June, they’ll have slightly over $10.3M in salary cap room to work…
And that’s if they don’t rework Gore’s contract.

From the last thread, I wanted to thank you for the kind words relative to the Draft research I do.
My oldest Son and I have been doing our ‘Scouting’ together since he was under the age of 10. It’s a 20+ year process of player education for us.
Kind of an addiction for us, but I find it enjoyable.

Ban me? BAN ME? Who do you think you are, Chuckles? You can’t ban the greatest blogger of all time (actually, you can… it’s happened several times). But there’s nothing more fun than messing with people on the blogs from time to time, and NJ has been my latest toy to play with. But I should apologize to the guy. NJ, I apologize, for what it’s worth. I enjoy the back and forth of a good insult tirade a little too much every so often.
As for 12th saying I should be a politician and that my facts don’t add up: I take umbrage with this. Deep and severe umbragement. First off, the only way I could be a politician would be if they made it unconstitutional to put a candidate through the vetting process. No vetting, I’m in. Vetting, I’m an easy target. And this may appear transparent, but who the hell would want to be a career politician anyway? That’s not for me at all. I can kiss a baby or two, but all the back office deals and corruption and favors? That would be trying to say the least. I’d last, but I’d hate it.
But the heart of what 12th is saying I still take severe umbragement with. Umbragement is not a word, but it should be, anyway. My philosophies are pretty solid. Sometimes I use, admittedly, a little to much hyperbole, and that can lead to me getting trapped in a corner and having to rely on flimsy facts to support my overall philosophy, but my best defense is the old saying, “The ends justify the means.”
I still strongly believe, all hyperbole aside, that the 49ers need a stronger backfield to get the passing game going, and they need another rookie safety (preferably a first rounder). I also believe we need a deep threat receiver but that we can find one in the later rounds. Speed is preferable, but if speed isn’t available at the receiver position in the later rounds, just find a guy who can make big plays down field. The treat of a big play receiver, regardless of speed, can take the top off the defense. Go Niners!

What I’m getting at is you take a position on something, then extrapolate like crazy (if this means x then that means y) and cobble together a story line to support your original point largely out of nothing but it sounds pseudo plausible so you run with it and cap it off by repeating whatever conclusion you managed to draw from the rambling. A lie often repeated becomes the truth is an old adage but a true one.
Baalke sucks, Baalke sucks, Baalke sucks becomes the defacto starting point in any future disagreement.
That is the stuff I find entertaining, watching you twist and turn the argument to something you can hammer effectively, a concise message.
As a career, politician would be good for you, reality should never get in the way of the message.

But, as far as hitting on a HOF talent at that position, it’s a VERY longshot.
My Son is leaning toward D with Pick 30.
As would I right now, with those options at WR I posited above.
You don’t mind blowing a Mid to Late RD Pick there but, you can see how rarely a late RD guy beats the odds.
As with Rashaun Woods and AJJ for example, even late RD1 guys face long odds.
For every Jerry Rice, there’s five A.J. Jenkins. The WR position is, and always has been too volatile. Add the “diva” concept that has reared its ugly head recently, and drafting a WR with your first selection has many more pitfalls then it has blessings and the good luck potential of the Irish and St. Patrick.
As much as I scream “throw the goddamn ball!” and “Manning this. Manning that.” I’ve always been a defensive guy at heart. I think you guys know that. If Louis Nix is still available at 30, I’ll run cross country to Radio City Music Hall in NYC and hand the card to the commissioner myself.
I’ll never be upset with drafting D first overall. May not be the guy I wanted, but I back the philosophy 100%
I can pick wide receivers. I never bust. You need to listen to me. I can scout wide receiver talent. Here’s a list of past Spitblood receivers wanted.
1.) Ruben Randle ( came on nicely last year on a bad football team)
2.) Alshon Jeffrey (simply the man)
3.) Mohammed Sanu (could have a great second half to his career if he ever leaves Cinci)
4.) Aaron Dobson (the most suspect addition to my list)
Keep in mind, I’m not picking first round blue chippers. That’s easier. I’m slotting these guys pre draft as late first, early second or beyond.
You may laugh at Mohammed Sanu, but you shouldn’t. He’s got the worst qb in the NFL throwing him the football in Andy Dalton, and Sanu still makes plays. Give him a good qb, and Sanu would be more of a star, with better stats. The Red Rifle sucks worse than Trent Baalke. And things are going to get worse for Sanu now that Gruden’s gone.
I liked Sanu as well Spit, saw him play on many occassions here at Rutgers.
Only concerns I had with him was his Draft slot.
He’s a baller.
Another Rutgers guy coming out that you brought up the other day is Coleman.
Big kid too.
Not very fast but, he’s worth consideration at the right slot.
Only knock I’d have with him is, he’s a body-catcher and, could stand to be more physical for his size.
Still wouldn’t be a bad option.
If we miss onOdell, his teammate, Jarvis Landry was an impressive option but, he flat out stunk it up in Indy, 40-wise.
I still have high hopes for a shot at Donte Moncrief.
Big body, 4.4 speed too.
Hoping he lasts until RD2 for us.
Even Jordan Matthews could survive until then.
