Moving on to one of the best bands to come out of the south, Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Nothing fancy is how I think the 49ers deal with the impending FA period. Which cracks open in 2.5 hours.
My take is the 49ers try to keep the proverbial band together without hitting free agency hard. Keep Whitner and Brown. Maybe Cox if he’s cheap. Dawson as well. Other than that? Who knows? There’s talk of getting VD’s brother, VD the CB, from the Colts. These others are peripheral guys who can be replaced in the plentiful draft.
So, seeing what happens these next couple weeks determines what they need in the draft. I certainly don’t think they go after a FA WR, but maybe a backup D lineman on the cheap? Sure. OTher than that, and maybe a CB/SS if they let Whitner go, I don’t see the Niners going into a free agent frenzy.
DeSean Jackson?
DeSean would absolutely do it for me in the slot. He’ll be $10.25 mil base salary/$12.5 cap this year with two more years on his contract after that. He’s already wanting to tear it up for a new and more $ contract.
Great player but I don’t see the Niners forking out that kind of money for a WR.
Besides, Roman would just have him running decoys while Frank crashes up the middle.
Whitner signing with the browns today.
Donte Whitner posts picture of champagne on Instagram, WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?!?!
Phil’s answer: It means he prefers champagne to whatever we offered (the usual frugal offer = small beer)
(from Niners Nation)
Forgot the link:
Rogers: gone. Whitner: gone. Brown, Wright and Cox: all likely gone. That leaves the Niners with Brock, Culliver, Darryl Morris and Dax Swanson as their corners. All the more reason why Baalke will draft a WR in the 1st rd.
I need more anesthesia.
posted by Dennis. Twitter is having tech issues.
That’s a lot of experience they lost in the back field. A FA signing and drafting at least 1 CB and 1 SS. Before these moves I wanted a DB in the first and these moves emphasize the need.
Well, we’re making some cap room for somebody, or two somebodies.
Yup.
Dawson just signed.
DSJ would be too pricey. WR is draftable. Safety Jarius Byrd would be pricey as well. But we have room now.
There is a cost it’s true but rookie WR rarely have an impact first year. Just pushing ideas for this season around.
Well, they should work to keep Brown if anything. Is Whitner that jazzed to play at home? The Browns? Are the Browns going after McCown as well?
Now that I think about it, they shoulda used their non-ex franchise tag on Whitner.
They need to ramp up the pass rush if they are going young in the secondary.
Browns are pissed they didn’t keep Dawson now.
Pettine has the Browns moving forward and fast. Dansby now.
Maybe we go for Graham. Then we run 23 personnel 90% of the time!
I like that Munnerlyn (sp) guy in Carolina, too.
That’s Captain Munnerlyn, Lieutenant
Glad to see the back of Dansby from our division too, good player.
The 49ers offered Whitner $4 mill. He got $7 mill from the Browns.
Right, NoFear. With Tukafu and Miller in the backfield and 4 TEs it’ll be the 24 superjumboelliott package . . .
And they just gave A. Bethea $6M for 4 yrs. A whopping $2M savings. As Ricky Watters would say, “For who? For what?”
Same skills, same age, less coin . . .
Think Pabst rather than Heineken.
Shit, forgot to post a song.
One of my all time faves. From Skynyrd’s 3rd album, Nuthin’ Fancy, of course.
One of my Favorite concerts at Winterland Chuck!!
Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker& Molly Hatchet Rockin the Southern Music!!!
Don’t know if GB is gonna resign him but BJ Raji plugging the middle at NT could be a flyer for the Niners to think about, just don’t feel Ian Williams is tough enough,or big enough, and he’s injury prone.
Nice. Nuthin’ Fancy in our FA moves today but we have little need fer fancy big buck players at this point. Gimme solid players and save us some bucks fer the big expensive fancy boys we still gotta sign.
Jones cut DeMarcus Ware, salary cap always wins.
Niners trade a 6th round pick for . . . Blaine Gabbert! There’s the vet. Now they draft a QB in the 3-4.
Gabbert was 10th overall and Kap 36th in the 2011 draft. Not sure what they do in the draft now. Probably take a QB after the 5th round I would think. Gabbert is cheap at 2 mil per.
Gabbert > McCoy? If so, not by much?…
I think Gabbert needed to sit on the bench behind a starter for a year or two. Tough to be a rookie starter in Jacksonville.
I don’t know nuttin ’bout Bethea. They get him 4 years at $26, but wouldn’t go 4 years $28 for Whitner? Must be something other than saving just that little of money, unless it was a question of guaranteed dough, which I haven’t seen yet. I’m not saying Whitner was Ronnie Lott redux, but what’s really going on here? Why did the Colt’s not keep Bethea?…
It usually comes down to money. Or they havea backup who can step in and play.
Now Branch with SFGate reports Niners are giving Bethea only $21 million over 4 years. That would make more sense…
Gabbert is an out-and-out pussy with no heart or courage. Even the Wizard of Oz couldn’t help him. But he’ll be great in another two years or so when Goodell officially turns the NFL into flag football.
Jesus H. Christ.
Shit, Dennis. He’s likely a 3rd stringer behiond whoever we draft. Jump already if this kind of shit pisses you off.
My angst over the Gabbert signing has absolutely nothing to do with his position on the depth chart. To say Gabbert plays “soft” would be kind. He’s a pussy. You know it. I know it. The league knows. This is all about image. The Niners just got a little more “pussier.”
No one cares, Dennis. You’ve been a pussy your whole life. Look how far you’ve gotten.
Bethea’s better in coverage and a decent enough safety. Curious move though. Whitner wanted to be closer to home?
I still think the Niners tke a QB in the 3rd or 4th round. Gabbert’s a backup rental.
My guess is he ‘wanted to be wanted’ and the bucks coupled with the hometown love did fer him.
As for Brown I’m sure the $1.7M ding he got from us has him thinking “Niners? Strictly my last option, those MFers”
Eric Wright is back on a one year deal too.
Did the DMV give ’em a new 1 yr deal on his DL as well?
Don’t know but know you told me he wouldnt be back when I wrote he could be
Miles Austin out in Dallas.
I would take a crack at him for the right price.
