The All-Important Game 3

Well, in the normal scheme of things, game 3 is the game that you see usually a good solid chunk of playing time for the starters.  Last year, Jim Harbaugh didn’t do that. He played Smith and co. Sparingly. So far this preseason, Kappy has been on the field for 8 plays, netting 2 field goals. I get the fact you don’t want to risk injury to your star QB, and you also don’t want to show youme enemy too much, but the Niner schedule starts out with Green Bay and Seattle. Not exactly teams you want to be ramping up your offense against. As of now it’s impossible to know what new wrinkles Harbaugh may unveil. We’ve seen the same struggles on 3rd down with the rest of the 1st team offense. And we creating haven’t seen much of the WRs At hey are trying to figure out.

So, where do we go from here? Onward and upward I suppose. However, its’s a little scary to me that Kappy has so little time on the field with the other starters. Maybe game 4 will see more playing time as well.

  1. NBC put this prime time preseason game on its schedule figuring viewers would get a half, maybe even a little more of Kap and Co. Instead everyone is going to get a heavy dose of Colt, Tolzien, B.J. Daniels and now even Seneca Wallace shoved down their throats.

    What’s on Telemundo?

  2. snarkk says:

    Seneca Wallace? Seriously?
That means the backup situation is a scramble, even more mad than we knew before. How is a guy going to learn a new offense in two weeks and possibly be ready to play a real down in the NFL as QB? Gore and the backup RBs better be in shape. Because if Kappy goes down, they’re going to get a lot of handoffs…

  3. Winder says:

It really shouldn’t be that hard to get a decent backup qb. Sorta like finding a good WR.

  4. NoFear49er says:

CK7 will get more out of playing against our defense without getting hit than playing against SD’s scrubs. Would certainly be ironic after all the kid-glove treatment to get him hurt playing against third and fourth stringers playing only in hopes of impressing somebody trying to make the roster.

Put CK7 in against the starters or give him the day off. What with the players’ association cutting off-season practice time and contact drills to near nothing it’ll be week 5 before most are up to speed anyway.

Pre-season games = injury mine-fields and not much else anymore.

I am going to miss that place.

  6. Nipper says:

Playing starters in a game that doesn’t count is a pure waste of time. Harbaugh knows this. The NFL should eradicate these games for all time. Timing only comes when the games count.

  7. unca_chuck says:

No fear, minn will likely play its starting defense for the whole 1st half, if not more. Most other teams play up to 3 quarters with their starters in game 3. Not scrubs. Practice is practice. It ain’t real speed with actual hitting. There’s no substituting game action. Treating the first two games as warmups is pretty stupid in my book.

It makes me think that we are on course for another year of struggling with a fairly unimaginitive offense.

    • What do you expect from Bo Schembechler Jr.? Jimbo’s a Big 10 guy through and through. Harbaugh gets a Woody (Hayes) when we line up with an extra guard and three TEs.

      • Winder says:

Tru dat, but he was QB and that has to mean he likes the long ball too. In all our losses I still think it was because we were outcoached. I think Mangini is here for a reason and not just to tweek on a few things.

      • Whether Mangini was brought in just to “consult” or eventually take Fangio’s job, only time will tell. But one thing is for certain: he’s bringing all of his old Browns over here with him. Phil Dawson, Colt McCoy, Eric Wright, Seneca Wallace and Ray Ventrone. That’s more than just a little fishy, that’s a whole can of sardines. Or in this case, Brownies. Then again, who can pass up a warm chocolate brownie?

  8. snarkk says:

Your offense is going to be fairly unimaginative if you’ve got a below average receiver corps. So, it will be interesting to see how much they let Kappy run to keep the secondary loosened up. If Boldin goes down for any length of time, they’ll probably hold walk on tryouts for WR. Maybe Jerry can play a game or two. Get the ol Flash 80 uni back in action…

  9. ninerdog says:

    Defense Defense Defense…still wins games.
Kaepernick will hit the long ball now and then, Gore and Boldin will be there for the red zone.
    That’s all folks!

  10. Be honest. Is this team as it’s currently constructed better then it was when the clock struck 0:00 in the Superdome last February? Let’s ask our new kicker, Phil “Richard” Dawson…

  11. D. gives us great FP off the TO, and our O goes 3 and out (last ball if not tipped would have been picked) and settles for the FG.

    Go Michigan!

  12. Not that anyone give a rat’s ass, but in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar I have Kettle Corn and Game On Dude in an EX Box. There’s numbers are 7-11. Just like Vegas at the table. Hope I don’t crap out.

    • Guess what? Yo! 11-7 exacta is a winner. Game On Dude trounced the field by about a dozen, and Kettle Corn won a four horse photo for the place. $27.40 for the $2 exacta. That won’t get me out of Pinole, but maybe I’ll send A.J. Jenkins a book that details to a WR how to CATCH THE GODDAMN BALL!!!

  13. Patton is already 1000x better than AJ.

Repeat after me: DO NOT draft WRs in the 1st rd. There’s no upside.
    Go George C. Scott!

  14. NJ49er says:

    Kilgore looks suspect at Center
McCoy completes more passes to the wrong color jerseys.

    Not gonna cut it.

    • How bout the battle between Brian Jennings and rookie Kevin McDermott to be our long snapper? Always took Jennings for granted, but he’s been a rock year in – year out. 14 yrs is a little long in the tooth. This is a very, VERY important position on the squad.

  15. unca_chuck says:

Well, got to see some WR play. Moore looked good on his chances. As did Patton. DIdn’t see the 2nd half. Maybe tomorrow. Kappy finally looked like he had some synchronicity with those WRs. The first couple drives were bad, but they got it going. The D is looking pretty solid all the way around.

    • NJ49er says:

One thing looks very clear Chuck.
Patton didn’t take long to get open or, produce a TD against better competition.

Depending on whose analysis you buy, Patton drew comparisons to Reggie Wayne leading up to the Draft.

I think Baalke will be forgiven for the reach with AJ, if he can get continued production from Quinton as a 4th Rd Pick.

Taking a chance on Jon Baldwin isn’t a bad idea either considering AJ was a no show since being Drafted.

Time will tell, especially when the bullets start flying for real in a couple of weeks.

  16. Nipper says:

Thankfully there’s only one more game to this practice stuff. It’s bullshit all the way.

  17. Winder says:

Pattern, Moore, and Baldwin all look promising to me, I also think Williams will complete this group of young and exciting WR’s. Loved the way Kappy kept the plays going, the Vikings D is no slouch.

  18. Alleykat says:

One less QB to deal with.Bye Bye Scott Tolzien. No suprise there.Didn’t even get in for mop up duty.
CK, McCoy,Daniels will be it.As Wallace yells “Freedom” to the taxi squad.

  19. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, Tolzein looked flat lost this preseason. Not going to be missed. Colt? What I saw in the 1st half was mediocre, but he showed some athleticism. Still haven’t seen the 2nd half. The WRs looked miles better than recent memory serves. Daniels continues to look good. Even though ist’s the 3rd string Walmart brigade.

  20. Irish Kevin says:

I see the usuall cast of charactors here for another season, Mr. Delmar, AlleyK, winder, NJ. nice to have something to read. Dennis is already at his best. Nice to not have to read about your love/hate relationship with A. Smith. I can hardly wait for the regular season. see what Coach H has up his sleave for the Offense. Defense when healthy should be unstoppable, or should I say they have stoppable capabilities. Anyway Go NINERS>

    • Winder says:

If Gore, Hunter, and LMJ stay healthy, I think we give every defense fits. This could very well be one of the Niners best years ever. The SB will run through the Western division once again this year and probably go to the last man standing.

  21. unca_chuck says:

Two weeks til kickoff with the Packers. Be still my heart. The defense looks just fine. Nice to see Reid step for step on the opening deep ball. THAT’S what a free safety is supposed to be good at. The hits are nice, and Reid did a nice job wit an open field tackle, but I’m all about him being in position to break up the deep balls, nit getting double-moved, and burnt. Whitner is still a liability on coverage, as he let a guy get open by 5 yards on a simple out route to convert a 3rd down.

,I’m a little worried about the offense, but the WR play yesterday helped some. No drops. Moore looks solid, as did Patton. At least in te 1st half. Going to watch the 2nd half now.Gore looks like his old self. Great to see End Zone Hunter back. Throw in a ST TD and you have a pretty good win all around. This team appears to be ready to challenge for the big prize. Despite Dennis’ worries and fears.

Haralson to the Saints, don’t know what they got in return yet.

  23. unca_chuck says:

Still no word on compensation. SBNation is saying ‘low round pick’ but I think they’ll get a little more for him. A mid-level WR?

    • NJ49er says:

      From Maiocco –

The 49ers receive a conditional seventh-round pick as compensation, the Sacramento Bee reported. If Haralson does not make the team, the 49ers will receive no compensation.

It’s a youth and Cap Mgt move –

  24. unca_chuck says:

Ewwwwwww. Seeing as he might have been a cut anyway, they got something for him. NO just lost an LB to injury, so they needed a body. He should work out well for them.
