Wild Card Weirdness Abounds

Well, I was 1-3 for my prognostications. Sure glad I didn’t bet any real money. No one got all of ’em right, because no one picked Denver. Not even Dennis.

God knows how I hate to feed into the frenzy but did anyone notice that Timmy “halleluia” Tebow threw for 316 yards yesterday? For an average of 31.6 yars per completion? Twilight Zone shit, folks. I’m sure if Tebow wins the Super Bowl in February, he’ll rise up from the field to the right hand of God, saying “I’m not going to Disneyland, I’m going to Heaven!!” Thus cheapening all religion, and specifically Christianity, as merely a hocus pocus magic show  based on hucksterism at it’s finest.

Either that, or Tom “ol’ devil breath” Brady throws for 666 yards, beats Tebow, and thusly the ground opens up to swallow him after the game.

As far as the games coming up are concerned, we’ll get to that later. It looks like I’m a glutton for punishment as the folks around here REALLY want to get into some sort of religious debate. Have at it. God know why I do this. It is getting beyond weird lately. I almost miss V’s regurgitated Eddie, Bill, and Joe rants. . .

Response to Phil from last thread:
Uh-oh. It seems that Death Theat has enlisted a recruit- or is it vice versa? Don’t tell me about Christians you fucking birther punk. Are you even a citizen? Let me help you then then: don’t try- your kind are turned away and sent back to the institutions in your own country. If by some bureaucratic glitch, you have papers, you’ll be deported as soon your traitorous political views are exposed. You know, some Filipinos served in Vietnam with US Forces- they were honorable men and women who would be ashamed to call you their countryman- they and the millions of Christians, atheists, Muslims in our military helped to secure T-Blows right to call those disagree with him “haters”.
So another right wing wacko has been added to the roster. FYI: people like DTD and Phil never took leave in SE Asia. They were hated by the true Christians and atheists as well. This is fact, no kind of threat years later: all it took was about 20 bucks American and they’re never seen again.

Hey you workin’ for Del Mar too? Funny how folks have different opinions on stuff. Fine with me. No so fine for others Nip.

Hey you won the wild card picking contest right?

  4. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Be grateful for Harbaugh and his QB Alex Smith and the rest of the Niners. Smith is still under the radar this season for being quietly effective. That’s what they do……play football….make plays and execute better than the opposition. Perhaps it will work again on SAT.

  5. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Everyone who saw the game, including me, remarked on how well T-Blow played. After all, we’re not dishonest shits like Phil’s boyfriend, who disses Smith when he’s playing well. And maybe FhilFuck can provide video of all these atheist and Muslim athletes he claims are proselytizing on TV…
    I’ll wait..

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Oh boy. Religious debate. I’m ready to poke my eyes out with hot knitting needles.

Funy thing is, take away the religious aspect of this, and you have the Alex Smith situation. Denver is winning ‘despite’ Tebow, according to people. The 49ers are winning ‘despite’ Alex Smith. Given that Smith’s numbers rabnk him 8th in the league (I think), the theory of Alex as game manager is a bit misleading. 17 TDs to 5 ints is a very solid ratio. Yeah, the Niners offense has sputtered at times, but some of that has to do with dropped passes, a banged up O line, and the revolving door at the WR/TE positions.

    • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

No debate chuck just answering old Lazarus’ many complaints with another point of view. I never debate politics or religion but I have a point of view and will ONE TIME (yesterday) exercise right to that. Old Flavor gave us his opinion of Tebow and yesterday of religion, great.

Naw this is a football blog right?

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

If I have any anger it would be towards those like yourself who don’t truly understand the concept of free speech and all who have sacrificed so that Tebow, atheists, Muslims, and people of all faiths may enjoy it. Even right wackos like yourself who would deny it to all not of your ilk. Now read my 11:37 pay heed to it while I thank my God that you are not citizen..

  7. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

It’s not a religious debate- people like FhilFick want to take away the rights of those who don’t agree with their right wing wacko beliefs…
As to Smith, some go with the game manager spiel, but hardly anyone says they are winning despite him. And hardly anyone says that about T-Blow either. Knowledgable observers just know the team is not going to win anythhing more than short term behind a guy who is more likely to go 6-20 than yestreday’s numbers. As I’ve said everybody could enjoy his exciting fluke ride if he would just STFU..

  8. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Typically- Boomer Esiason was critical of some T-Blow’s skills and Rush Limbaugh called Boomer out on his radio show-calling Boomer a hater. And Boomer actually supports the proselytizing. Fact is, anybody who knocks T-Blow on any level is accused by the right wing faction of being haters. There probably were VERY few who were “haters” not long ago- but his “disciples” are creating them- fast..most of this isn’t even T-Blow’s fault, he’s being used by others with an agenda. But he can stop it if chooses by refuting these crazies.

  9. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Lets get back to football, Tomorrow marks the 30th anniversary of “The Catch” as it is affectionately known. Nice article in the Chron on the guy snapped the pic of D Clark. Where is V when you need him. Who is going to make the Catch against NO this Saturday? Can the D hold Brees to 300 yards. This is what inquiring minds want to know? T-Bow?? who dat?? Who cares. I will care if it is Niners – Broncos in the SB. But until then…who cares.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

He threw for over 400 last week but may have lost anyway if Detroit hadn’t dropped 3 easy interceptions. Vick threw for 400 against us-and lost. Manning plus 300 and lost. Stafford over 290-lost. It’s about a helluva lot more than passing yards. I fully expect Brees to pass for more than 300-and lose.

      • Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

All that was said was done tongue in cheek. I feel the niners have a very good chance of winning this game. I want to say the stats show a drop of about 10 points for NO offense when they are on the road. Candlestick (I don’t know it by any other name) is mushy at best, it will slow down Brees and his recievers. It should be a very entertaining game.

  10. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Here’s what he should say: ” As everybody knows, I am a devoted Christian and share my beliefs freely-and will always do so. But there are men and women who have different faiths that they deeply believe in and they are no more or less righteous than we are. My God has blessed me with the skills to pursue the career I love, but He does not choose me to succeed in a sporting event any more that He does anyone else. To my fans, I ask you to respect that I am no more “chosen” than anyone else and to please respect the opinions of others who may not share our beliefs. It’s what Jesus would counsel…”

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, it’s similar to the tea party movement. It started as a grass-roots org that was concerned about taxes. Fox glommed onto it and turned it into a gathering of blithering idiots who say things like ‘Keep the gummint out of my Medicare!’

I have no idea what Tebow himself has said about the haters, if anything at all. But, again, as Rush the douche so aptly shows, to criticize anything about Tebow is to be a satanist.

The media in this country is a monumental joke in their treatment of this. As with just about any other issue, the superficial ‘yea’ or ‘nay’ attitude, left/right, right/wrong, black/white, and the ranting from the fringe on either side gains the most air time. When hard news stations devote time to things like this, it cheapens the process.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    For what it’s worth:

Who is heading to the NFC Championship Game? The Packers and 49ers. Green Bay has been too dominant all season to let an ideal chance at repeating as the champ slip away. The Packers have had the bye to rest and heal, and the return of injured wide receiver Greg Jennings will be huge for their offense. As for the 49ers, they’ve been overcoming skepticism all season. Now 13-3 and coming off their own first-round bye, they should be ready to prove they weren’t just a nice little story for a team looking to re-establish its place among the league’s elite. Both games will be hard-fought, but the home teams are the smart picks this week.

  13. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Unless some news flash about a key Niner player that can’t play this Saturday happens during the week, I’m going to have to go with the Niners. As a fan, sure, but objectively, too. Offense is sexy this year, so the Saints are in the news. But, defense wins. In this case, the Niner D should slow down Brees to a score somewhere in the 20s. I’d call that a draw between those two squads. You can’t expect the Niner D to hold the Saints under 20, that would be other-worldly. But, if the Niner D plays the Saints O to a draw, Niners should win, because Niners hold the upper hand in the other two game aspects.. First, Niners have the better special teams by far. Plus, the Niner O, pedestrian as it is, doesn’t cough up the ball, and should have the advantage against a less than pedestrian Saints D. If Gore gets over 100, that means Niner ball control, Saints O is off the field, and NIners win. Niners can still win if Gore gets under 100, but they’ll need a special teams play or a pick six runback to help get it done. This should be a great game, hope it does not disappoint…

  14. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Okay so how many of you out here are ready if the Niners lose. I think we all know Dennis will be ranting and raving about Smith, no not Justin. But for me it will be disappointing but not devastating. like years past. The Niners have a very good team. good enough to win it all? Maybe. But 13-3 is nothing to be sneezed at. I feel the NFC has the best teams, and one of them should win the SB. So

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

If they do lose, my feelings would depend on how they lost. Obviously there’s no shame in losing to NO. But we don’t need a firestorm around Alex again. As Ted Robinson said, this is the only city in the NFL where there would be divided opinion over whether a 13-3 QB should be back. He needs to play well..

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Bingo. If the Niners lose, I’ll be bummed, pissed, all that, but I’ll be comforted in the fact that Harbaugh turned the team around without the benefit of much training camp, and a very abbreviated preseason. If he can turn this team around that quick in that little of time, he should be able to do wonders with another draft, and a full-on training camp. EVERYONE said that the lockout would hurt this team immeasurably. You have to wonder if it could have been any BETTER. What if there wasn’t a lockout? Would the team have a better record?

And, you HAVE to give out kudos for the players (Alex and Justin Smith to be precise) to initiate and attend the ad-hoc mini-tiny player training camps (which I semi-ridiculed at the time). I guess Harbaugh gets props for getting theplaybooks into those guys’ hands while the lockout was lifted for 7 hours that one day.

  16. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

As I’ve posted, I expect the 49ers to win this rather handly. Saints score two TDs less per game on the road and haven’t faced a defense as good as ours. There is a caveat, of course. Even though Alex showed he can throw with Brees if need be ( last year’s game 2), you probably wouldn’t get rich betting on us to win a shoot out. They need the same formula that got them here- win the Special Teams and field postion battle and take care of the ball. As Eric Davis has said, BTW, Alex removed that Game Manager label- they ask him to make plays in crunch time, and he makes them. He’s a 100 QBR QB in the second half, almost 20 points higher than the first half. And his rating at home is comparable to Brees away. Brees is 100.7 with 8 INT 17 TD on the road. Smith is 99.8 3 INT 12 TD at home. In SF, the QBs are evenly matched.
    Again- 27-17 Niners…

  17. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

38-31 Niners . Looking forward to what Roman/JH have up their sleeves to counteract NO blitzing

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

They had the shitload of sacks in the preseason but haven’t been that successful in the regular season. We have 42 sacks, they have 33. We’ll see.

  18. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

My feelings on a Niner loss will depend. If they get their asses handed to them, then it’ll be “OK, we shot our wad, it was a great, unexpected year, congrats to the team, the coaches and the front office — let’s get better for next season”. If they barely lose, I’ll be pissed, look for somebody to blame — then the next day I’ll get that first feeling, which is the one I should have…

  19. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I think the Niners win. Until things don’t work out that way, I guess we’ll see.

I don’t think the Niners get blown out, but shit, NO is no slouch. When they are on, they are tough. Home or road. I’m just very glad it’s here. But like I’ve said, this team minus this coaching staff nearly beat NO last year. They didn’t have Sproules, but we didn’t have Harbaugh. The Niners have improved their secondary greatly from that game last year. NO has improved their running game. Stopping their run is essential. They ARE going to pass, but looking at Detroit, they got killed when they tried to bring up one of their safeties to stop the run. Plus, Sproules was getting through the line untouched. Don’t think that happens either. Shut down the run. Get pressure on Brees. Score in the red zone.

    31- 20 Niners.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Some want to ignore it but there is a HUGE difference between their performance at home vs. road. That’s not to say can’t break the mold but it’s pretty much the New Orleans Rockies away from home.
BTW, on that blitzing out of bed in the first preseason game, Harbaugh hasn’t forgotten that bullshit- let’s hope he does have some payback in mind ( legal, mais oui)

  20. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Chuck, you’re the expert here, should the Niner CBs bang/chip the NO WRs at the line and disrupt the patterns early? I would think that would help delay patterns and help get the D-line time to push into Brees, since he seems to feed on getting the ball out fast, and is therefore tough to sack or hurry. Of course there’s risk in that, but I think it’s worth a shot, maybe on one side at a time?…

  21. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

More often than not the Niners have used press coverage. To good use. Yeah, they should jam at the line. They pressed Mergatroid and rolled a safety to him every time and it worked well. He got yards and catches, but no home runs. It really comes down to the pressure from the base D. If the Niners can rush 4 and get pressure from it, that leaves a lot of guys to cover the passing lanes. Which is how the Niners have been getting so many picks. 7 guys in coverage has been their recipe for success most of the year. They rarely blitz 5 guys, or even 6. I think Aldon Smith should be involved more on 2nd down, as NO throws a lot. He’s good enough vs the run. Coverage has been slow but steady progress.

If NO can keep Brees protected well, and he has time, that’s where it can get ugly. If they can run, they can have early success going downfield. The Niners may then have to take chances and start shooting gaps on blitzes. Dangerous, but if the rush isn’t getting there, they’ll be cruising down the field anyway. That plays into their game more, but the Niners will have to get bodies on him quick to throw off his timing and take him out of his confort zone.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

That’s right, I forgot about how they controlled Megatron back in Motown. Good point. And, that Aldon Smith thing on 2nd makes sense — give Fangio a call on that, will ya’? Fuck, you’ve got way better analysis shit than those idiot, so-called “Insiders”….

  22. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

I’m too excited about playoff football coming back to SF to be bummed out if we lose— if it’s an epic last second loss or if the refs take it away with bullshit calls I’ll be pissed. But I feel like I’m playing with house money right now. My expectations isnt a SB win. I know that sounds weird. I’m not really even thinking about that. Just happy to be back in the playoffs…

  23. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

I’m going into this Saint’s game with the attitude of WTF Not? WTF Not the Niners? I learned that after the 2010 Giants. Then, I was just happy to get into the playoffs after years of crap, but it turned in a wild-ass ride to Nirvana. So, I got smart this time. Fuck New Orleans. Fuck Green Bay. At 13-3 and a great defense, WTF NOT the Niners?…

  24. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Thanks, Snarkk. Yeah, before the season started, my expectations were: fight for a playoff spot and maybe win a WC playoff game before geting beat by an ‘elite’ team. To BE a so-called ‘elite’ team is crazy fast. And the good news IS the team has talent. Seattle went on a weird smoke and mirrors run last year, and sunk back into mediocrity pretty fast, although they came on late. The Rams? Injuries, sure, but a lot more turmoil in the coaching staff, and misuse of their QB. They have regressed badly. AZ surprised me. They have the makings of a tough defense. Their throwing the $$$ at Kolb looks like a big mistake, seeing as how Skelton came on for them down their stretch run.

Still and all, if the Niners have proven anything in these last few misbegotten seasons, it’s that when you are playing for nothing, you can play some good football. When the shit is on the line, you’d better be ready. The Niners appear to have gotten over that hump. Winning 4 games on the East coast is no mean feat. And the comebacks on the road were even more noteworthy. Their only real fuckup was the Dallas game. They had 2 times where they played 2 games in 5 days. Losing to Balt, and beating Seattle on the road. All these things lead me to believe that this team has the mettle to get through NO this weekend.

Phil? Criminy, tone it down some. No one here is hating on Tebow for being Christian. I disagree with some of the hype and bullshit he’s pulled, but hey, whatever. The frenzy building around him is way over the top. But that isn’t his fault. Yet, he COULD at least calm some of the firestorm by saying ‘ease up, folks. I’m a football player, not the savior.’ It took Tebow half the season to acknowledge he had teammates helping Denver win games. He’s young and foolish, but he’s learning. It took Elway most of the year to even back the guy. Why?

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Because Elway doesn’t believe it himself. There’s not any underlying motive behind Elway’s actions.

Bullshit.Leave me totally out of it. Phil stated back in. If you think this hate speech is OK for your site, go for it: “Prollem is islamist, gay, athiestic marxistist motherfuckers get a complete pass from ya’ll when assholes like, Chomsky, man hating feminists or one hundred hate spewing islamists dump their shit in FUCKING PUBLIC you sit on yer rather large goddamn asses saying notjhng”
I don’t give a shit where DTD made his threat on the President and neither should you. I fought for and will die for the rights that these scumballs enjoy. And I didn’t “hound” DTD until he started up again. Fuck him and his pyschotic hatred for Smith, that you tolerate because he’s mentally ill.
I’m always happy to discuss football- now we can get back if you can get a handle on your wackos.

So over on KNBR, they are asking if someone gave you $500 who would you bet on? Niners or Saints?
Being a die hard niner fan, it will be put on the Niners.
    Score, Nineres 38-Saints 24

    My list
    1. Jimi Hendrix
    2. Keith Richards
    3. Eddie Van Halen
    4. B.B. King
    5. Chuck Berry
    6. Eric Clapton
    7. J J Cale

  50. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

As long as Hendrix remains #1, the rest can fight for 2nd. The problem is, there are way too many great guitar players out there. Past and present. Link Wray should be in the top 20. John Lee Hooker, Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, Dick Dale, Carlos Santana, Curtis Mayfield, Neil Schon (his early work before Steve Perry is great), Dicky Betts, Eddie Hazel (check out Maggot Brain some time), Robby Krieger, Neil Young, Slash, Ted Nugent, Tony Iommi, Steve Vai, Randy Rhodes, David Gilmour, on and on.

Too many genres as well. Blues, rock, funk, alt, grunge, metal, speed metal, punk . . .

    • Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Yeah, but it is a good way to get people to listen to other music. With youtube and other venues it is easier to listen. I grew up in the 60’s before radio station told the DJ what they had to play. That is why I have, rock, Blues, country, everything on my Ipod.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

      Buddy Guy is up there.
Saw him and his crew once in the ’90s in a very small venue club in Houston. Out of sight. Best live musical, if not entertainment, show, I ever attended. Dude just hit it out of the park for two freekin straight hours of hard drivin’, jammin, slammin blues and funk. Awesome…

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I went to Buddy’s club in Chicago about 15 years ago. Just a bunch of young guys who were flat incredible, and Buddy himself came out to play at about 1:30. He played til 3:00. Killer killer stuff . . .

I said last night — WTF NOT fire Jackson? I guess Mark Davis and McKenzie agreed. He wasn’t there long enough, nor established anything much while there, to make firing him difficult. New GMs always like to bring in their own guys — not that surprising. Hue’s big mouth surely didn’t help his case to stay. Not that I care much about the Raiders, but I might if they start acting like a real NFL team, with real management, with real goals and a real organizational ethic. This “bully” and wild ass, near criminal element penalty inciting BS is tired, and more to the point, has proven to not work…

  52. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

It might not have been a good game but no case can be made that anyone but Alabama should be number one.

This is a line from an article on ESPN.
The Saints can say they’ve been here before, but they’ve also never won a postseason game away from home under Payton.

In a lighter vein and about football: Even the Saints have limitations which hopefully will be exploited by our coaches with two weeks to prepare. Countering their pass rush/blitzing and deploying an effective one against Brees would seem to be key. Niners are going to try to hold the ball and keep it away from Saints offense as much as possible. I agree with those who say we gotta score 28+ points but I believe this is going to relatively high scoring on both sides, more like Pack v Lions weather permitting.

  55. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Unless the oddsmakers are totally ignoring the home and away splits for the teams, there’s no way the Saints should be favored. Even the one area where they would figure to have a big edge, QB, is actually about a push with the game here. I showed the numbers yesterday. I believe Brees has a 100 QBR 17 TD 8 INT on the road. Alex is 98 QBR 12 TD 3 INT here. I still give Brees the edge based on playoff experience but I don’t see any other edge for the Saints.
