Game Day – By the Time I Get to Phoenix . . .

She’ll be waiting . . .  Anyhow, this game is going to be a true test of the intestinal fortitude of your San Francisco 49ers. AZ is actually steadily improving lately. As NinerDog posted, their defense has become very stingy in recent games. The Niners have struggled in the red zone in recent games. As I said, I think getting Braylon Edwards is going to help, as the Niners HAVE to open things up some down close. Yes, the Niners should be able to win a defensive struggle against these guys, but they have a tough ST unit as well. Patrick Peterson has wn a couple gaems for AZ singlehandedly (relatively speaking), much like Ted Ginn’s opening day, and the Detroit game.

Interesting thing is the Niners and Raiders will be playing at the same time, so it’ll be fun to see if the Raiders can put a hurting on the Packers. Call me crazy, but I think the Raiders win this. The Packers defense is very questionable. 31st in total yards, but they do get a lot of turnovers by pick-offs. Palmer, if anything, can hit the deep pases, so if Oakland can block, they should be able to light up the scoreboard. They are also pretty good at geting pressure, so you never know.

I will watch the Raider game too, just to see what happened. You mentioned the GB defense but the Raiders defense isn’t any better. Could be a high scoring game but I haven’t checked the weather yet.
I’m still sticking to 19-16 Niners but that score could easily be flip flopped. I feel very nervous about this game.

  2. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Game’s in Oaktown, Flav. Not much different than Pali . . .

  3. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

it’s in Green Bay, dude. Much different that Oaktown. What schedule you looking at?

  4. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Does the fact that you are now up to speed on the game’s location change your prediction at all?

  5. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Add geography to the subjects Chuck flunked in school. We already know he sucks at history. He can’t even get the correct date when the world is going to end. You think might wanna have that one right for the records.

On second thought, there won’t be any record books left. Fuck history!

  6. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Looks like my fantasy team is gonna be just like the Niners this year —
    one and done!

  7. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Even when he can’t play, Willis remains the heart and soul of this team —
he gave the team an emotional pregame pep talk.

Of course he’s on one of my FF teams. Speeches don’t garner me any pts.

  8. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

This week’s scoring predictions VS Cards:

27-20 Niners Chuck “..AZ is a tough place to play, strong special teams, can score quickly”
22-13 Niners grumpyguy “close 1st half; Card mistakes in 2nd give us cheap TD. Aldon shines”
    23-13 Niners phil “3 FG in 1st half, 2 TD 2nd half”
20-10 Niners twinfan1 “Chuck is brilliant when he listens to me (wink)”
26-13 Niners NinerDog ““Go deep early to Edwards; KW has a big game; no suspensions!”
19-16 Niners Flavor (and Grant) “It’s a toss up; they’re playing well, we’re injured”
    27-13 Niners snarkk
    26-24 Niners barleyfreak ” we’ll give up 3 TD’s and a FG. We’ll score 2 TD’s and Akers (MVP!) will hit 4 FGs”
    27-10 Niners Kevin
20-10 Niners rob “we’re going to double up the retardinals”

This is the tightest grouping of scores we’ve had yet. barleyfreak, Flavor -and Chuck to some degree- are calling for a squeeker.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Right, Skippy. How’s yer 5-11 looking? How about you come up with something new?

I guess being proven wrong so often doesn’t bother you.

Shit, I assumed since we are on the road that Oakland was here. Esp with the 1:00 start. What’s up w/that? A 3:00 pm game in GB?

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

No idea why they are starting late in GB but you made me look it up when you said I was wrong about the location. I was like, “huh? WTF is Chuck talking about?” lol

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Add math to your geography and history deficiencies…how many times do I have to remind you? I predicted 7-9.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Brady picked in the end zone. Washington with a chance.

  11. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

I was really impressed with the article in the Chron about Blake Costanzo–great story about hard work paying off. And yet another *new* player on the team that wasn’t on the team last year. I get so tired of listening to out-of-town announcers blabbering on about how Harbaugh is doing all this with the same players he had last year. Total bullshit. There are explosive, impact players littering all three sides of the ball (O, D, ST) that weren’t on the team last year.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Hey, Oaktown can pull it off. 43º and a slight breeze. Might be a little colder by the end of the game.

  13. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

No, they can’t. I don’t give a shit what the weather is like. Rogers is gonna pick them apart. They could also choose to run the ball through that shitty run D. Throw in a few Carson P picks and it looks like a route to me– 38-10, something like that……

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

The defensive backfield and ST saw the most changes. From Akers on down to Costanza. The rest of the team is pretty much identical. The biggest changes to me are the addition of Bruce Miller and Snyder getting the nod over Chilo at RG.

Brady and his OC nearly came to punches on the sideline.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Biggest changes on offense that is.

  16. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I guess I better make my prediction before this thing starts…

27-17 Birds. Kolb goes Krazy on our secondary.

  17. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

NE just escaped by the hair of their chinny-chin-chin.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

60 yard punt, -2 return. Lee is pretty fricking important.

  19. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

That’s a fumble, but they recovered. It will net us about 7 yds on the loss.

  20. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Nice throw there by Carson Palmer — NOT! Another INT for the Pack.

  21. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

3rd and 3 and we run the ball. That shows a lot of confidence in your QB…

  22. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Nice play by Alex to buy time and hit Hunter. Good play.

  23. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Nice play by AS for a 1st

  24. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Nice play A Wilson 15 yards

  25. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Boone in at LT. Staley getting attention by trainers…

  26. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Shit, they’re blitzing every single play.

  27. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Hey, Chuck. Don’t you have Sanchez on your FF team? 4 TDs (2 rush) today.
That should help you in your consolation match vs Spit.

  28. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Skelton. Excellent. That face mask play was scary, Smith’s neck got completely wrenched sideways

  29. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Kolb out, Skelton in. You must admit, we’ve been VERY lucky thus far this yr…

  30. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

My boy Skelton in at QB

  31. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

So that last series was strait out of the sing play book, 2 runs and third and long, hey defense the niners have to pass go get Alex

  32. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

My boy = da whipping boy

  33. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Nice run by Frank = 1000 yards this year

  34. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Phil, if you’re a horror movie fan and enjoy seeing blood shed. You could look (with one eye shut) at my FF playoff matchup. I’m getting sliced and diced like the teenage campers having sex at Camp Crystal Lake in “Friday the 13th.” Mrs. Voorhees is taking me out to the woodshed.

  35. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Jesus Christ, Ted Ginn is terrible.

  36. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Why is Ted Ginn doing anything but return punts and kicks?

Andy Lee with the Phil Mickelson 64 degree lob wedge. Nice backspin.
Our ST’s are top notch. “Top notch! Top notch!” as Judge Smails exclaimed.

  37. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

See? That’s what Ted Ginn can do.

  38. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

He can’t play WR worth a shit. But he sure the hell can return kicks.
The sooner the Niners make that his ONLY function, the better.

  39. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Yeah. Morgan going down really hurt.

Let’s see if we actually punch it in here.

  40. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Another RZ failure. But I’m sure I’ll be reminded that it’s not his fault…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Everything is his fault, Dennis– not scoring a td on that drive, both losses this year, Chandler not signing with the Warriors, your shitty life….sound about right?

  41. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

In side the 5 and no TD, pathetic!!

  42. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    That would be a no.

  43. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Our RZ offense is not good

  44. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Our RZ offense sucks dead monkey balls.

  45. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Look out the Tebowski’s got the Bronks in the RZ

  46. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

If the Niners don’t start scoring with field position like that, it is 1 and done in the playoffs.

  47. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

The 49ers have scored only three TDs in their last 22 trips to the red zone.

    Again, it’s NOT his fault!

  48. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

All-day got popped pretty good in the head after he forced that fumble– hope he’s ok

  49. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Goodwin got beat like a redheaded stepchild on that last sack.

Suffice to say, our OL needs to step it up.

  50. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Nice slant to Crabs. He beat PP — again. Just like he did last game.

  51. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Our Offensive line is having another shitty game.

  52. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

    I think it’s all coming back…

  53. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Son of a bitch. Arizona just got away with one.

  54. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Fucking Son of a Bitch… AZ does not even lose the time out?

    We got royally screwed here.

  55. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Wow. We got ANOTHER break on that review.

Don’t bank on this shit come playoff time.. Captain Hook! FG no good.

  56. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Fucking dumbfuck Zebras just fucked us.

  57. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

    How the tides can turn…

  58. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Son of a fucking bitch. TD, AZ, courtesy of the Zebras.

  59. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

This is why it is sooooo important to score TD’s. AZ takes the lead when they should be down by at least 10 points minimum!!!!!

  60. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Teams are starting to expose the weakness of the Niners offense, bend but don’t break in the red zone for opposing defenses

  61. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Damn this looks just like Singletary offense!!

  62. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

This drive looks good and all, but if they don’t score TD’s it is all for naught

  63. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

We’re seeing a lot of K. Hunter today. And I don’t mean Kim Hunter from “Streetcar.”

    Stella!

      • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Phil, I’m glad you appreciate fine cinematic history much like myself. I just watched “Streetcar” for the umpteenth just the other day. That film ranks in Del Mar’s Top 5 all-time. More importantly, Marlon Brando ranks #1 in my book as the greatest male actor of the 21st Century.

I loved him as Don Corleone, but I really felt for him as Stanley Kowalski.

        Hey, Stella!

      • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Del I’m seriously gonna have to check that one out, thanks!

  64. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

    Whaddya say? Another FG

  65. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Like I said, the drive looked pretty, but what a but ugly red zone plays!!

  66. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

This is the Roman offense? Weak

  67. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

ANOTHER RZ dump. We’re lucky that AS previous pass wasn’t an INT.

But that’s what you guys have leading you into the playoffs.
Check Down Charlie. And a QB who needed his TE to speak up for him vs Philly.

Drew Brees or Alex Smith? I might have to sleep on that one — NOT! (Borat)

  68. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Raiders getting destroyed. Chuck, check my 12:51 post

  69. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

    Cool let’s get 3

  70. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

3 times inside the 10 yard line, 9 points. Terrible!!!

  71. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Dennis– his deflected pass was bad, he stared the receiver down and then threw an easy pass to block. But dude, do u watch any other games? You must not. Almost every qb in the league makes at least a few mistakes in a gm, including brews, romo, daulton, all your faves. We have some probs in the redzone right now– that’s on the OC ss much as it is the qb and the guys who aren’t making plays. Only a simpleton turns a football game into their qb vs our qb. Either that or you don’t understand the game. So which one of those guys do you wanna be?

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Dennis, didja catch Brady’s pick in the end zone?

      Of course not.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Flav, I watch more football ( college and Pro) than you and the other 90% combined. If you and others don’t like what I report, that’s fine by me. All I do is try and find the best players that might help the 49ers. I think I more than did that with my previous analysis.

Screw that, Frank just scored a TD!

Which reminds me. I better check Frank’s litter box for Alex Smith droppings…

  72. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Really crappy half of football in the Red Zone by our offense.

Wherever you want to put the blame, this had better get fixed. This game should be 24-0 or 24-7 by now, not a one-score game. If we play the Packers like this, we lose 35-15.

  73. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

What I don’t get is no passes to Edwards or VD down close. Ginn shouldn’t be the on to run a corner fade. EVER. I don’t fucking get it at all. The blocking is shit today. 5 sacks?

The Niners don’t have any. Unless the fumble counts as one.

  74. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

I liked the shot of VD while being restrained shouting and glaring at the coaches. WTF? This right before our last FG

  75. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

After as well… I’d imagine it was a loud halftime between the coaches and the players.

  76. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Ok Flavor, we got our 19 now AZ needs 3 FG to make yer call 19-16

  77. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

VD was pouting like a lil’ beatch as half ended but even he has to know that he’s just not an effective receiver in the red zone. He’s good matching up against linebackers, hes fast and stuff, but he isn’t going to run some sweet route, some tight route down low. He’s the last guy I’d make the #1 option in the red zone

  78. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

” Is it wrong to gamble, or only to lose? I’d better come back for help when I’m broke. ”
~ Sky Masterson. “Guys and Dolls.”

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

And for the few and far among you who don’t know who played Sky Masterson…

Don Corleone is gonna put a horse head in your stocking this Christmas…

  79. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Nice throw there by Alex on 3rd down — NOT!!! Said Borat.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

You are such an insufferable girl. How ’bout this numbnuts: every time romo or brees make a bad throw, an interception or a fumble, you report it here at ‘Forever. You watch all the games, right? It might teach you to notice mistakes by other qb’s and give your dumbass a little perspective…

  80. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

The 49ers had better start taking advantage of opportunities on offense, or this game is going to get away. No more three and outs.

  81. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

We need to draft this year with an eye towards this Red Zone problem. It needs to be addressed.

  82. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    Nice hands, Delanie. Christ.

  83. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Defense and Special Teams keep us winning games. The offense needs to get better.

  84. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

It’s nervous making seeing us sputter on O. Don’t think 19 points are going to be enough against AZ

  85. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Seriously, do you people think we’re gonna beat Brees and his Saints in the Divisional Round? OK, wait, Tinker Bell just tapped my shoulder.

I’ve been to Disneyland (World) more times than any of you mooks could imagine.
Disneyland is my life. Always has been, always will be…

And especially come this most special time of year…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Just admit that you want the Niners to lose in their playoff game. If you put it in writing, instead of all the back/end-pussy-side-bar comments, I might be able to generate an measurable level of respect for you.

  86. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

    TD Cards!

    Oops!

  87. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

We’re scoring FGs, the other guys are getting TDs.

Not a prescription for winning today.

Time to start moving the ball, or fall even with NO.

  88. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Not too surprising the TD. We’re not tackling that well either. Is this the post NFC West clinching let down?

  89. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

WTF are we running the ball for? Did they learn nothing from the first half?

  90. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Apparently not – the offense got worse after halftime, rather than better.

  91. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

2 runs and the D knows you have to pass!!!! What is this the visit of Christmas Ghosts past!!!

  92. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

I thought we’d win because of Card mistakes – they made the mistakes, but we squandered the opportunities with crappy play on offense. You cannot do that against even a semi-decent team when you’re on the road. If we lose this game, it’ll be because we did not try hard enough to win it on offense.

  93. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

So help us Baby Jesus, under the Christmas tree…

Alex just threw a pass, 10 yds past our Christmas tree…

Incomplete is what we see…punt the ball…the record shall see.

  94. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Hope the Crards score again, we need to see what this coaching staff Is capable of!
