Game One in the Books !

Holy shit. This game looked a lot like last year where we’d hang around, take the lead, lose the lead, screw up on special teams, and watch the defense sag and fail. Well, this game the Niners had a 38 to 22 TOP advantage, 384 to 230 yardage advantage, 72 plays to 50, on and on, it shoulda been a laugher.

But no, despite the stats, the 49ers were down 17-13 with 3:24 left. Purdy came up big on a 49 yard bomb to Pearsall on the last drive, and threw a very wild and dangerous TD pass to Jake Tonges to take the lead with 1:34 left.

Sam Darnold sealed the game by fumbling off his lineman’s butt under pressure from Nick Bosa, who recovered the ball to seal the game.

Lots of heroes and goats.

Good: The defense is light years better than the last 2 seasons. They won this game. Ricky Pearsall had a strong game. Purdy came up with the game-winning drive. Kittle was off to a hot start. CMC played very well, and wonder of wonders, Shanny spelled him with some strong running by B Rob. The Niners won! A game that we would have lost last year.

Bad: Defense was soft early. Purdy missed the LB not covering CMC when he fell down and that caused the 1st pick. He forced a pass into triple coverage. Kittle got hurt. 5 trips to the red zone got us 17 points. Shanahan once again HAS to hand the ball to CMC on 1st and goal. He does NOT grasp the concept of play-action in the red zone.

Ugly: Jake Moody. Jake Moody. Special teams. Kickoffs are a complete mystery as to how and where and what yard line the ball goes to. And Hennessey was blasted to oblivion on the blocked FG.

Despite the ugliness, the defense rounded into form as the game went on. Purdy ended up winning the game. On the Road. Against a division foe. And Shanny dodged a bullet for losing yet another close game.

All in all, most excellent.

A Win is a win, even if it’s ugly.

Especially in Seattle against a Division foe.

Kittle and Jauan are of concern however.

On Bosa’s sack/fumble recovery, the only pass rusher who was double teamed was Williams. Actually, we ran a stunt. 3 guys blocked Williams and the stunting D-lineman couldn’t get around the wall. That left Bosa one on one, and we saw what happened!

chuck you’re right about losing this game last year, we would have. I liked a lot of things about the game Purdy made some nice throws and his legs are what makes him a great QB. I love the way he can extend the plays. I think the infusion of kids on the team will be a major plus on both sides of the ball. I don’t even want to think about Moody.

  6. Winder's avatar Winder says:

The speed on defense looks really good also.

I’d like to see what K Justin Tucker is doing these days since getting released in Baltimore.

He was as reliable as Robbie Gould.

McKivitz new deal for 2006-2008 is 45 mil with 27 guaranteed.

Forced to do it and hope it works out.

Shanalynch forced to make this contract. At least it is not an overpay like the suckers who opened their hindquarters for Banks and Jaylen Moore.

The 3 must needs now 2 , LT and OC.

From what I saw (I’m gonna watch again), the pressure was coming up the middle. Brendel.

  11. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

McKivitz got in better shape this offseason. Alarmingly from a 49erswebzone article he is now 301 lbs.

The 49ers drafted McKivitz (6-6, 301) out of West Virginia in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Since then, he has appeared in 63 games with 40 starts, including 35 consecutive starts anchoring the offensive line. Last season, the 29-year-old posted a career-best 72.2 offensive grade from Pro Football Focus.

So if 301 is his current playing weight this in shape RT is undersized and will be bullrushed. This is what we paid 2 years guaranteed

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

McKivitz was a pretty good LT in college BTom. Wonder if they see him as the guy to replace Trent down the road?

      • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Is 301 his college weight. What is his current playing weight really.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Not sure about college weight but I saw him as a potential interior guy due to his nasty demeanor. Thought he would have been great at OG.

He’s listed as 6’6 301 on team site currently but Trent is at 6’5 320.

Not a huge difference IMO. McKivitz has been pretty durable and the time at RT has probably been a benefit to him, especially if he gets to return to the left side which he’s comfortable with.

    Awesome game.

And Prater was sitting on the couch on Sept 4th.

Hell of a job by Josh Allen. Harbaugh and time management seem to be a recurring theme.

That and the Henry fumble. Harbs went total conservo and couldn’t get a 1st down with Henry AND Jackson to run out the clock.

A game for the ages but it’s only week 1. Ravens lead 40-19. Bills scored a TD but failed on the 2 pt, 40-25. On next Ravens series Henry made a cut to the left but did not have two hands on the ball. Got punched on the ground with 3 Bills defenders smothering the ball around the Ravens 30. 40-32 then another td missing the 2 ptr for 40-38.

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

The needless going for 2 points early in games is baffling to me. So many coaches get fucked doing it.

But with our kicker, I’d totally understand Shanny’s reluctance.

Conditioning program leaving a lot room for scrutiny. Game 1 is a grind in that regard. Gotta say I have plenty of faith in Mac if we have to go to him. It’ll pay off to get him prepared if we’re to get into a playoff run.

With KBourne in the building I’d have to assume they’re familiar with each other in NE? Not sure if the timeline at the moment.

Same goes for the rookies. Long season ahead and we know what happens with that wall of NFL reality. Might need them more at the end of the season.

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

did not watch the game. On passes is the pocket collapsing and even if pass gets off is Purdy getting a lot of contact into his legs

      pff stats can be misleading

Do you guys feel good about the pass pro Purdy gets

      jones is less evasive also

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Purdy held the ball the longest in the NFL week 1 which also leads to a higher percentage of pressures. I don’t know this for a fact but I would guess he’s held it so long waiting for an opportunity to develop after Kittle left the game. A bunch of no names except Ricky and JJ coming in rusty had a lot to do with it.

Colton was really not good his first year and he’s been viewed through that lens ever since, but objectively he has vastly improved and is an above average RT.

He was worth the $45m 3 year extension IMO.
