Deebo For Nothing . . .

. . . and the chicks are free. Pretty unreal the Niners bent over backwards a couple times for Deebo, including acquiescing to his demands to get the ball more, and he promptly dropped a game-winning pass. So, to show him, they trade him to a young exciting team and we get a 5th round pick.

And take a $31.5 million cap hit. Oh well.

Looking for an upside, I see saving $15M prior to the bonus payment deadline and dropping the contract for a guy that wanted out, did add a Draft pick at least.

I’m also preparing for the potential loss of BA to drop another heavy contract as well. Perhaps a player for player swap?

They’ve got to add rookie deals to pay Purdy and getting younger ain’t a bad thing IMO.

    • Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

The won’t be able to do anything with BA till he comes back and shows he is as good before the injury.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Correct. Which is why I think a player for player deal is likely Irish Kevin.

I’m looking more at the contract dump angle.

  2. Winder's avatar Winder says:

What I saw of Deebo last year was we kept giving him the ball but he rarely made over 3/4 yards he didn’t find many holes in the line. He didn’t look like his regular self at all. I know he took pressure off of Purdy with his runs but he wasn’t helping the team in the long run. We better draft good.

  3. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

The Niners had him at his best, he is not a break away WR, BA was better at that and so was Jennings, it is a wait and see what we have in the rookie, (name), escape me at the moment, haven’t had my coffee yet. I was not that impressed with Deebo, I liked BA and Kittle better.

  4. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Finished my Combine marathon and came away very impressed with Armand Membou as my OT understudy to Trent.

  5. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Membou would be a fantastic pick and initially starting at RT next to Puni at RG and the eventual replacement for Williams at LT!!

I’m just not sure he will be there at 11? Niners may have to move up if they want this Beast! And they should imo ..

He passed Campbell( definitely his short arms projects more of a guard now)&Banks ( though solid is not nearly the athletic specimen that Membou is).. Membou at 6’5 332 lbs 4.91 forty is off the charts but really all coaches only look at the 10 yard splits( no lineman is going 40 yards downfield?)Membou 10 yards split was excellent!

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

caution the big bodies have tougher times healing from knee surgeries, like mecki beckon . Question best size for C like an Alex Mack. Brendel at most 300 lbs and has tougher times keeping pocket from collapsing. Have Zakelj or batch been tried at C yet?

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

I was expecting Zakelj to be the heir apparent myself. Not sure what the deal is either. Bartch is likely to be the LG option?

      • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

continued use of Brendel will get Purdy hurt. Both Zakelj and Bartch will be upgrades. Drew Dahlman only 303 lbs. Both Zakelj and Bartch @ 315 lbs. No need to spend a pick here.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Membou likely put himself in the top 5 after his work in Indy AK.

Hard to know what priority Lynch & Co have in the 11 slot unit it happens.

  6. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I doubt we take a OL with the first pick there are to many good defensive line players to choose from at 11. I do think our 2nd pick should be an OL. Just as long as they are big and fast they have Trent listed at 6’6″ 320 so we should be looking in that neighborhood, fast is the key word. I forgot but we have Russel Gage on the team now he was a really good WR and I think he still is he will be a good target for Purdy. Hopefully we don’t take a WR until we address both lines and probably LB’s. Someone mentioned Zakelj this will be his 3rd or 4th year my guess is if he doesn’t show something he will probably be cut unless he’s a good ST’s player.

  7. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Last year’s combine you posted a link that posted all measurements and events for a player with combine year and players name . Can you post for the 3 iol on team Bartch , Zakelj, Hennessy along with Jared Wilson. I saw that article yesterday but realized one pick each in 1st and 2nd. For me that means OT and DT.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

BTom I think a DE would make the most sense at 11 but… What do I know? If Kelvin Banks makes it to 11 I don’t think they’d pass.

I’ll poke around for the measurements from Indy and see what I can find.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

“what do I know” that’s really how I feel about my observations and picks I figure I am wrong at least 90+ % of the time. Anyway it’s still fun to play the game.

I’d go after Davante Adams in a New York minute. The Jets released him.

Sign him to an incentive-laden deal and go for it. He is a stud.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

If Membou is there, take him. If not go DT. Our first 4 picks should all be OL and DL.

BTW we get the Pick No. 148 – Fifth Round from Washington

    No way no how.

Purdy is easily a top 5-10 QB after the standard setting of Allen,Jackson,Burrow&Mahomes all AFC QB’s

  17. Winder's avatar Winder says:

They still haven’t figured out how to measure heart. The differences between weight, hand size, arm length, bench presses, etc, don’t even come close to predicting how “good” of a player they are going to be. Tape is also deceiving otherwise every team would be full of pro bowlers. My guess is 4 out of the first 10 players pick will be mediocre(good enough to start but no cigar). And that is after the 3 year time in the league. Probably at best 3/4 will be pro bowlers.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Another factor is supporting players around you. That is a big one IMO.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

One thing I’ve noticed is that our Oline seems to favor agility highly. Movement is key with the ZBS. This kid could fit at OG maybe RT? Shuttle drills and 40 were above average in Indy. Arm length is a big factor on the edge too, which he has.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

NJ- I still have a feeling we go defense at 11. We couldn’t stop anyone last year. But I do hope we go Oline with 2 and 3 but I doubt they will do that too we have many holes to fill

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

I’m with you Winder. Thought 11 might favor a DE/DT also. We’re only guessing of course but it keeps us engaged 😄

  18. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Schefter says the 9ers initial offer to Purdy is $45m per year. I think that’s a fair starting point, but if I’m the 9ers I don’t go over $50m.

If Purdy and his people do a hold in/out and drag the negotiations I’d withdraw the offer and tell him he’s playing on his current $5M contact and franchise him for 2 years whci nets Purdy 97M over 3 years. Significantly less than $50m per year so choose wisely. That system was designed for exactly this scenario so use it.

IMO Purdy is a top 10 QB, but just barely. As such $50m is at the high end for his current value.

I am a fan of Purdy and he is a great kid, but there’s no getting around his obvious limitations and his contract must be commensurate.

The 9ers have generally overpaid players under ShanaLynch and that’s not sustainable even if you’re winning Lombardi’s. Ownership is right to hold them accountable and to tighten the screws on the checkbook.

The Rams won a SB by overpaying but reset with great drafting and shedding expensive players, the 9ers have to do the same thing and that looks like the current direction.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

I would give him 55 mil and sign him for 7/8 years. Load it with incentives and a fair signing bonus. He is by far the best QB we have has since Garcia and I think he will get better if protected.

    • Berger's avatar Berger says:

      I agree 12th.

  19. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Really it’s all about the F/A’s available first before the draft starting next week, and will the 49ers engage are not with cap spending are dumping more players for cap relief?

If so players like DT Milton Williams,Center Drew Dalman,LB Nick Belton&CB Asante jr should all be on their radar to fill upgrades..

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

“Dalman will easily top the free agent center market and should post a strong number,” Fowler reported. “While Creed Humphrey’s four-year, $72 million deal is tough to top, Dalman will do very well.”

At the 2021 nfl combine he may have been a no show but he was 6’3″ 295 . Creed Humphrey was 6’4″ 303 with similar stats to zakelj with the same arm length of 32 1/2. Zakelj had a high RAS rating for a center. Dalman is going to be much more costly than the 1 million Zakelj is getting.

Brendel is 33 and deals with knee arthritis also. Feliciano is retired. To me it looks like Zakelj or day 2 draft pick this spring. In 3 years Zakelj knows the plays and assignments. Keep Zakelj as center only and start him in 2025

Am fed up with Foerster and KS. Put both on a short leash with a gun to their head.

  20. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Purdy is worth the $55 mill because that is the going rate. That’s a perfectly reasonable number. We will see if Mr. Golly Gee whiz Jesus is my copilot is gonna push for the green, but if this front office was smart, they’d not play this so fucking stupidly. $45 mill isn’t even in the ballpark.

And like I posted earlier, the top 10 highest paid QBs in the league combined have 1 more ring than Purdy. And that was 0 before 9th place Hurts just won his chip last month.

The market is the market. If the front office fucks around with Purdy, they are guaranteeing their exit out the building.

At this point they HAVE to see that.

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

There are 9 QB’s getting $50m or better so it depends where you consider Purdy’s place is. I believe he just breaks top 10, as such $50m is his number, but if you feel he’s ranked higher then the money goes up.

The tell tale last year was with difficult circumstances Purdy regressed. Other QB’s, Goff for instance who had similar circumstances performed to a higher standard IMO.

We can all point to various stats to make an argument one way or another, bottom line, in poor weather Purdy plays poorly and without the best players around him he simply wasn’t able to overcome it.

I don’t see Purdy improving. His physical traits can’t change and his mental acuity is already top notch. For the 9ers to win a SB with Purdy he needs top players and top scheme.

IMO he can win it all with the right set of circumstances and in good weather environments so I see his number as $50m and that’s just the fluffy feel good number, the real number will be whatever he is guaranteed.

  21. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

I’m going 4/200 M for Purdy it’s a good deal for him and the team imo.. then draft a later round QB for development between Slough,Ewers,McCord,Howard,Riley would be good value.. They need a backup unless any of you think Tanner 6 fingers Mordecai is the answer?

Joey Bosa was just released by Chargers clearing 25M cap space so maybe an incentive laden contract for 2 years with an option teaming bookends with Nick but still hitting the draft hard on DT,DE ..Joey more a rotational player with more mileage than his brother but who knows a change of scenery and hooking up together could be exciting even if it’s a risk/ reward scenario I’m in Thoughts?

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Interesting scenario they both have some miles but I can just see the competitive nature max out with both of em. Might just make good theater. My guess though since he’s already down south and plays in the same stadium as the fucking rams will be his destination.

  22. Berger's avatar Berger says:

My #1 for the 49ers is Mason Graham. He’ll be gone. My #2 is Kenneth Grant. I would be ecstatic if we drafted Grant. If we don’t, I want to at least take a DT. We got pushed around in the interior D line so bad last year, there was no way to beat really good teams. It has to be DT or just keep being 2nd tier. I won’t be unhappy if we get a top OT at 11 instead, but DT is, by far, our top priority.

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

We are seeing the same things Berger.

      • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Cannot keep kicking the can down the road anyway. Injuries to Trent Williams is here. He is 37 and that and increasing wear and tear is here. We cannot field an adequate oline with him out and Purdy in the line of fire.

To bring in a FA close to his caliber may be impossible and if found will be pricy and an injury risk. If we took Rosengarten instead of Pearsall I could go along with DT. Most years the quality LT is gone by midway 1st round.

  23. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Bakkentom..Well if the Niners weren’t so stupid in 2020 draft they would have had a future HOF STUD on the OL in Tristan Wirfs who was right there ( Niners even made a trade with TB to pass them lol to pick) and they chose a broken down jalopy named Javon Kinlaw!!

So actually I’m with you on the OL first pick only if it’s Membou, maybe Campbell, not as high on Banks jr,Simmons… But Graham for sure if he falls to us I’m taking for sure..

  24. Winder's avatar Winder says:

The Oline is a top priority. What I am confused about is if we can trade Greenlaw or are we just gonna cut him. Anyway by the end of next week we will have a better picture of where we are headed. I think we will pick up a oline player or two in FA. I would like to grab a couple more in the draft too. It’s hard to know how good they will be at the pro level and usually take a year or two to figure it out. We need help there immediately.

  25. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

I still favor a DE in that slot as an heir to Bosa. Especially on a rookie contract.

  26. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Id be all over Eagles F/A DT Milton Williams who’s coming into his prime at 26!! He will have plenty of suitors and probably gets 20M per but he’s a beast run stopper in the middle.Pair him with Graham and that front is a stone wall..And you add Center Drew Dalman then draft Membou and your OL is looking stout again, it’s not rocket scientist 👨‍🔬 to improve immediately..

I’m worried the 49ers are not even going to go after any F/A the way they’re acting with players getting cut/ restructuring contracts, possible selling 10% of the team to outside investors WTF?? This storied franchise getting cheap now, lowballing Purdy won’t help with no backup plan either..

    Cohn wrote this:

Last year, the front office wanted to trade Aiyuk. However, Shanahan insisted on keeping him and actually sprinted into John Lynch’s office to stop an Aiyuk trade that was in progress. Big mistake.

In addition, Shanahan also seemed to encourage the 49ers to extend both Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams — two older players who missed lots of games due to injury last season.

Those recommendations cost the 49ers millions and they did not see a return on their investment in 2024. The team won a mere six games and missed the playoffs for crying out loud.

Wonder what he thinks on Brendel PFF pass ratings near the bottom of centers last year

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

I am not justifying any of KS’s decisions but I can understand em. The prior year Aiyuk had a fantastic season and was paid accordingly, and he wasn’t injury prone. I didn’t consider him mailing it in but that’s what a lot of players do when they hit the big money. I am all for dumping him as soon as possible. As far as McCaffrey and Williams they have some miles but they are still in the top 3 of their positions. Hopefully they can stay healthy because we are gonna need em the whole year. I wish KS would back off of the draft this year and let the people who get paid to do this do their jobs.

      • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

  30. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

This sorta seems to answer your sentiments and mine Winder. Shanny struck me as desparate to get the monkey off his back perhaps? Stick with his pieces at the expense of roster depth? BA, CMc, Trent and Deebo, all fell short in hindsight.

Now they’ve lost leverage, gotten older, and face Purdy payment.

We cannot keep LG Banks and now LT Jalen Moore due to 34 million salary cap. We have to keep all our picks to get more on rookie contracts.

Maybe Bartch takes Jalen’s place and take future LT at #11 and LG in the 3rd round? We are stuck with Zakelj at C. Rest of picks for Saleh?

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

The absolute pisser and a half to the CMC deal is fucking Shanahan rode him into the ground.

EVERYONE KNOWS CMC isn’t a guy like Saquon Barkley. CMC came to the 49ers with injury concerns but Shanny gave him the most touches of all players in 2023.

      Brilliant.
