The Quiet Before the Something Fishy in Denmark . . .

Not much going on but rampant speculation. One whack job named Craig Carton has the 49ers trading Brock Purdy to the Cleveland Browns for Myles Garrett. And then of course we finally sign Aaron Rodgers!

Yeah, and monkeys will fly out of my butt.

Yeah, let’s trade the 24 year old phenom for a totally over the hill Rodgers, and resume our search for a QB. Makes perfect sense. Even with Garrett, a game-changing guy, we’d still need to score. Now and in the next few seasons.

There’s even warbling that Maxx Crosby would love to return to the Bay Area after Crosby wrote a long and loving twitter post about being in the Bay Area for the NBA All-Star game and what a great time he had. He’s been waxing about wanting to hit the playoffs and get a shot at a ring, and that doesn’t look very promising for the Raiders for the next few years.

So, yeah, yet another trade idea that would cost us dearly in the draft department. But really, this team blows 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks like Monica Lewinsky blows presidents. So, the cost for a bona fide stud like either Garrett or Crosby would be at least worth the chatter.

Nice to wake up too. We need that spirit again but I’m afraid this generation just won’t leave their iphones to be bothered.

Love this song. Wish it was longer.

Craig Carton is/was a NYC sports radio guy that served time for gambling infractions so, there’s that. Hyperactive is an understatement.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Correction, Carton got nailed for something other than gambling.

In September 2017, Carton resigned from the program and WFAN after his arrest for securities and wire fraud. He was sentenced to three and a half years in prison, and after serving 12 months, he was released to home confinement in 2020 and completed his sentence in 2021.

I think the play should be a short term deal with Kahlli Mack over Joey Bosa.Yeah He’s 33 compared to Joey 30 but he’s actually more durable then Joey.Mack’s only had one season under double digit starts while Joey has had 6 seasons under double digits with injuries.Mack besides a certain HOF player still has something clearly left in the tank matching up with Nick for bookends edge rushers!

Both these guys are likely to be cut before the March deadline by Chargers but Mack would be cheaper to sign, don’t see Joey taking a team discount..

  4. Winder's avatar Winder says:

22 more days until FA so I guess we will see pretty soon what’s up. But just like the Giants the Niners are never really in it for most players. I guess the Hargrave signing might just hold em back from going after some of the top guys IDK. Anyway it’s a fun time for hope and to see how our FO is working things.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

The Niners are willing to do some off-the-wall shit at times, as opposed to the Giants. I’m sure we will get some O line and D line help as the issues are pretty fucking obvious. Take a flier on a WR or 2 in free agency. The draft? That’s where they lose me.

Posey has injected some life into the Giants off-season, but after the Adames signing, not much.

I mean, I like Verlander just on the hope he can be a player/coach and we get some good starts out of him, but he’s really just like all the other one-year opt-out deals we’ve been doing for the last 6 fucking seasons.

I mean, we can get Alex Verdugo and Rowdy Tellez. Jesus. Nothing like sitting on your thumbs for 3 months. They really piss me off when you see the Dodgers sign 4 of the top 25 free agents.

    We get one! Huzzah!

“I just want to break even!”

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah, the product that the Giants have shown for the last couple years has really been discouraging to me. It’s not even the losing that really bothers me it’s the way we lose it’s kinda like a team full of 1 tool players. Anyway it’s a new year and I am excited to see some ball.

I think this years draft has to be good. We gotta make sure the new guys can play. I liked last years draft but overall we strike out way to many times. We gotta get younger.

  6. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen says:

Posey certainly started strong asserting his imprint on the team, starting with the Chapman signing and then Adames, and then…… crickets. Wonder if the owners sat him down and told him to stop spending money. Verlander will be fun to watch, but that was really a silly signing, considering they keep saying they are confident in all those young pitchers they want evaluate for the starting rotation; if that’s true, why bring in an old guy who will occupy one of the starting slots and prevent a good look at the youngsters? I suppose deals can still be made before opening day, but I give Buster a less than mediocre C- for this offseason, as this team is probably looking at 4th place again. That said, really looking forward to baseball being back, baby…

  7. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Reasons why I don’t get too excited about our Draft prospects.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah NJ everybody here has been saying that for a long-time now. I loved Lynch as a player and I am not so sure how much influence KS has in everything but have a feeling it’s a lot. I remember seeing some clips where the Niners brass says all the coaches have influence with picks. That’s great but I doubt there is much influence with the position coaches an even Turner has missed badly with the RB’s so where is the real line in all this? TFIIK. I do know the Lance pick ended up being the worst in a long line of early fuck ups.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

The Lance deal took away too many picks that impacted the ability to build a core Winder. Major whiff that likely was attributable to Shanny 100%. Multiple picks that got no production and returned a 4th. Totally inept.

Lynch, I’ll assume, was responsible for the picks of Thomas and Kinlaw on the defensive side among others.

What’s worse than the guy handing in the card on Draft day is the scouts that made those evaluations in the first place.

What the video lays bare is the number of starters we’ve gotten in the top 2 RDs.

        Pathetic.

  8. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I have thought before that the Solomon and McGlinchy picks were just as much about character as their potential. They were both high character players who should rub off on their team mates, and they probably did to a certain point.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Character don’t mean shit if you can’t hit. Just ask Charles Haley. And yeah, they got seriously burned with Reuben Foster and Aldon Smith as borderline guys, but the Solly Thomas pick was just not good. He was rated high, and he had some good games at Stanford but he left a lot of boring ineffectual tape as well. McGlinchey was worth the shot. I don’t know. If it wasn’t for Purdy, the Lance deal would have been the death knell for just about any coach/GM pairing.

The draft IS a crapshoot but it is about 1000% easier than the baseball draft. These guys shouldn’t have this terrible a record in the early rounds. It is plain awful.

And I’ve always been of a mind that Lynch is really just a glad-handing window-dressing kind of guy. Great player, and all, and I’m sure there’s back-and-forth between the 2 but I think the buck stops 100% with Shanahan.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, Paul. the Verlander thing is a total hedge against the youngsters sucking. Player-coach kind of thing Yay.

But it’s yet another one-and-done deal that has no future. Very disappointing they didn’t do anything about getting a power hitter.

I’d trade the kid pitchers NOW for Vladdy Jr. and sign him to a big deal. Fuck this namby pamby shit.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

I don’t think the top hitters truly want to be here. I figure the Yanks, Dogs, SD, or AZ will probably take him. But, since the Mets got Soto maybe they break the bank again for Vlad.

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Vlad would be a trade and sign. Throw a ton of money at him to make it worth his while.

Fuck this shit. The Dodgers are spending 3x everyone else. They can overpay ONE guy.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

I would love to get him maybe if we move the fences in again it would be more enticing. No matter what they say personaal stats mean a lot.

    • Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen says:

Agree. I figured they needed to get at least one youngish front line starter and 2 big bats, at least. Verlander for 1 year is silly, and Adames alone is not going to elevate this team out of 4th place. I’d actually feel better about this season if Buster would just come out and say “Yeah, we’re in it to win it…. maybe next year but not this year, we’re going to treat the whole season as a big audition and see what we’ve got.” And he’ll probably find that what we’ve got is a perennial 4th place team, without some major moves during this season. Do they honestly think that someone from the “young pitchers collection” of Black, Winn, Beck, et al is going to become a front line starter? Eek.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Birdsong looks like he may work out. The rest? Meh. They have a few other young guys to sort thru. Harrison already has to change his style.

      • Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen says:

Agree about Birdsong, would rather see him in the “projected rotation” than Hicks, I think he’s gonna be good. Harrison, we’ll see. Mason/Winn/Beck et al, they’re all just guys.

  12. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Jaguars have interviewed Niners director of scouting Josh Williams(14 years with Niners for the possible GM position (he’s been interviewed twice now)so if they hire him the Niners would receive a 3rd rd comp pick 2025 draft and a 3rd rd comp 2026 under the minority hiring policy the Niners are great at…

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

What I love is other teams complaining about the 49ers hiring minority candidates and the picks that come with them when they go.

I’m sure if Jerry Jerkoff complains loud enough he’ll get Trumpo to rescind the Rooney Rule.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah, he’s pretty much sticking his nose into all of America’s institutions. If he gets the post office he’ll have Bezos(sp) by the shorthairs and be making bank.

  14. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Eric Branch of the SF Chronicle mock draft, 1st round OT Kelvin Banks, 2nd round edge rusher Jack Sawyer, 3rd round DT Darius Alexander, 3rd round DT J. J. Pegues.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

JJP is on my list Irish Kevin.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Pegues is an excellent athlete who also carved out a fullback role on offense at Ole Miss. He’s not a super productive pass rusher, but he was consistently a good run defender through the last three years. That may be more valuable for the 49ers than interior pass rush after they really struggled to stop the run last season. Pegues may not be a starter on Day 1. He does have the tools to be a rotational player early in his career and it’s easy to see how the 6-2, 325-pound defensive tackle fits on a San Francisco DL that desperately needs DT depth.

  15. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

I don’t know why you guys are bitchin and moanin about the Giants, give me a player who was a power hitter in the 2010, 2012, 2014 teams? They didn’t have one. I like building a team from the farm system.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Kevin we don’t have a Lincecum, Cain, Vogy, or a Madbum so we need to score some runs. We also had a pretty damn good Pen. My only real beef with the Giants has been about sloppy play.

      • Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Yes but in 2010 they were rookies, we didn’t know their potential. Well not Cain, but the rest. I just don’t like the let’s go out and “buy” a team.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

The rookies were Posey and Bum and I would love for someone to show up like that but so far none have even come close. Our young guys could not even field their positions, run the bases, or have very good plate discipline. That is on the FO and coaching. We bring up the youngsters continually during the year so we see most of the talent we have. I would just like to get a couple of bats and a front line pitcher if we plan to compete, if not then I am with you on playing the kids. Building through the draft is the way to go but we don’t seem to draft that well in recent years. And I know the baseball draft is way tougher that other sports.

      • Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Yep, if you ask me they concentrate on pitching in the draft, looking for the next Madbum. He was once in a lifetime player. Draft those power hitting outfielders.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

The Giants can trade for/sign pitchers. It is a PITCHER’S ballpark. They have shown in their entire existence in SF that NO ONE (not named Barry Bonds) WANTS TO SIGN HERE as a free agent hitter.

        They need to draft HITTERS!!!!!

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

One other thing, Kevin, the game in 2010-2014 was MUCH different than it is now. You don’t have to have 3 guys hit 40-50 home runs, but come on. Bonds was the last guy to hit 30. And that was in 2004! 21 seasons ago! Backup catchers hit more home runs than our ‘power’ guys.

But I’m with Winder. The biggest problem last year was the call-ups absolutely sucking at fundamentals. The highlight being 2 guys in a row getting thrown out at 3rd base. Just flat STUPID baseball by a lot of guys. Throwing to the wrong base, not knowing when to tag up. And the ton of errors.
