Hmmmmm. I said it before and I’ll say it again. If this team loses out, which is very likely, does 6-11 engender the brain trust another shot? Yes, they’ve had a lot of success. Success that teams like the Jets, Cowboys, Raiders, Chargers, and countless others would kill for.
But we are who we are. We are supposed to WIN Super Bowls. Not choke them away in the last minutes. Bill Walsh was wildly successful yet clashed constantly with Eddie D to the point of him getting fired and hired back a few time before Bill said ‘fuck it’ and left the reins to George Seifert due to the stress of it all.
Seifert of course has (at least with the 49ers) the second highest winning percentage at 98-30, or .766, in NFL history. WITH 2 Super Bowl victories. A year after winning our last Super Bowl in 1994 he was unceremoniously fired. Mooch wimped out to close the 1st half in a Tampa Bay playoff game and was tossed for his trouble.
Harbaugh? Well, he dictated his demise with the team by openly mocking Jed and the owners, and tanking games when Brady Hoke resigned from Michigan. He was tossed a year after HIS Super Bowl loss. Then the front office tossed all the good players.
Kyle? Lynch? I get that they have been successful and they brought us out of a dark time, but that was because the front office was a bunch of dithering idiots hiring Jimmy Farts-a-lot, and Dr. Kedorkian was running the team on a shoestring budget. You want water? You gotta pay for it, guys.
These guys have ONLY been saved by the back ends of a lot of drafts. The Trey Lance debacle should have ended their reign, but for the absolute luck of drafting Brock Purdy. Most of their impact picks are from rounds 4 and down, not at the top of the draft.
Shanny has a pretty impressive coaching tree. Thing is, the saplings are growing faster than the mama tree. Yeah, weak analogy, but the point remains, I hope they move on from at least Shanahan if not Lynch. Shanahan hired him, not the other way around. Which may be why they stick with Lynch. I can live with that.
Hire Bobby Slowik. He’s the OC for the Texans. DeMeco Ryans brought him to Houston from the Niners, and was on our coaching staff for 6 years. His last position was as the passing game coordinator.
Shanny isn’t crapping roses any longer and the league has pretty much figured him out. Purdy is a gold mine and if protected will be a future star. He alone has saved the last couple of years. He is in a terrible spot this year. I don’t trust the 49ers braintrust anymore and to me it started the minute they thought it wise to let DeFo go. I knew in my gut that we truly fucked up with that one. They let one of the most productive run stoppers and team leader walk when even my damaged brain knew it was wrong. We probably will keep Shanny for another year but they should lock him out of the draft room, make him read the ‘art of war’by Sun Tzu if for no other reason than to get his head back into the game. A refresher course on time management and finally take the play calling away for the most part. If we can draft alright it will probably take three years to be competitive again since we have a lot of dead weight to get rid of.
Yeah, what really pissed me off was Shanny calling the time out with 8 seconds left before the 2 minute warning. If he had called time on the previous play he would have saved more than 40 seconds.
But by then the die was cast. We were gonna lose.
The Shanahan era has run its course. Most coaches get 5 years. He’s had 8 seasons and a lot of tragic losses.
The fingerprints of Shanny are crystal clear on Offensive Picks.
Very few in the upper RDs have panned out. Throwing away Picks for Lance has contributed to them throwing huge deals at FAs to find immediate relief for the lack of depth on the development bench.
But for Puni what have we gotten in recent years?
I liked McKivitz coming out of WVU.
He played LT but I thought he had the nasty streak to go inside to OG. Somehow they thought he was an answer to McGinchy.
Whiff. Whiff.
Talent evaluation on offense appears to be in the hands of Shanny and needs to stop. Credit for Purdy went to Brian Griese as I recall reading along the way due to his broadcasting familiarity.
I can’t get excited about this situation going forward. We’re older and on the backend of the sweet spot now. Can’t find a positive point to lean on with better Draft position knowing our record in recent years.
Ho. Hum.
My only hope is they move on from Shanahan. Slowik would be my pick to succeed him. He’s familiar with our system and would fit right in.
As for Lynch, we’ll see. I just don’t know how much he is Shanahan’s puppet.
I mean, who picks a WR #1 in last year’s draft? I think the last draft was the best in a while but I didn’t like Pearsall in the 1st.
My immediate reaction to Pearsall was related to BA becoming expendable Chuck.
Now I’m quietly hoping he’s not another Shanny crush (ala Lance) that flames out on offense at the detriment to the D.
I’m sure he’ll work out OK as a slot guy #2, 2.5 guy. It’s just way too high a pick for what we got at a position that wasn’t a pressing need.
I mean, they JUST watched Jennings play himself into a Super Bowl MVP had they hadn’t fucked it all up.
Aiyuk or not.
Beyond that, they didn’t learn their lesson with Deebo and Bosa. both who struggled after their holdouts. Sign him or move on. Don’t fuck around for 4 months.
Shanahan is a bit like Nolan in that if you buy in completely to the program, you are golden. A la Warner, CMC, Kittle, and I thought Williams. Guys like Bosa, Deebo, and Aiyuk (who spent season 1 in the dog house) get strung along and fucked with. And the whole deal around Buckner was absolutely monumentally stupid. They’ve failed at replacing him for the past 4 years.
This is an excellent article,

Well it’s Kyle’s play calling that aggravates me, the Bears game was his best game this year, but the minute he has success, he goes back to his conservative ways. IMO he has always been looking at the clock. He needs to forget the clock and call plays that are going to score points.
Defense next up, they need an aggressive play caller, I don’t need to blitz every play but only 5% of the time? Make it at least 25% of the time, the line can’t break through with just 4 guys. I don’t understand how fans can see this but the coaching staff has no clue.
It’s pretty simple. He rides his RBs till they break. He overused CMC last year while Mitchell and Mason sat on the bench collecting dust. Shanny could have cut CMC’s workload by 1/3 or more subbing out with them. But he didn’t.
– CMC – 339 touches
– Mitchell – 81
– Mason – 43
Beyond stupid.
As you mentioned Chuck, Flores in MN mixes up the defensive front pre-snap and creates confusion. Sorensen, never. Only reason we hung in Thursday night was likely due to some familiarity between McVay and Sorensen.
Shanny has no new wrinkles to offer and can’t scheme them in when necessary.
Sick of the same old same old.

SHanny forcing the ball to Deebo was a glaring issue all night.
That too.
Anal
Glad they caught this 😄

All that woulda coulda shoulda amounts to nothing. All it proves is that Shanahan cannot finish games.
