Back to the Cellar

Christ. This team played like this is season one of a new regime, rather that year 5 of what was supposed to be the christening of the Super Bowl contenders. Penalties, mistakes, more penalties and some really shitty play calling led to yet another loss in yet another winnable game. Trey Lance looked like the raw rookie that he is, firing high passes (one for a pick) and missing guys. He ran well.At least on the plays that weren’t really designed for him to run.

Once again we outgained out opponent, 338 to 306, And once again we were behind the whole time. The 49wrs were an astounding 1 for 5 on 4th downs. Mainly because Kyle Shanahan seems very inept at creating a mismatch somewhere on the plays. Most involved trying to stuff it up the middle. The Cards must have watched the recent tapes, because when Kyle Juszczyk came into the play, 2 linebackers followed him and stuffed him at the line.

The biggest play of course was the roll out that Lance got stuffed about 2″ short of the end zone. The pass to Mitchell wasn’t really there, but he could have waited a tick to let him get open, but he made the charge. If he went high he might have gotten in, but woulda coulda shoulda.

Speaking of Lance, he had 16 carries for 89 yards. Shanahan doesn’t seem to think that he should maybe protect the investment. Much like dear old dad did with his mobile QB, Robert Griffin. Lance was all over the place, 15/29 for 192, but there were drops, and missed passes.

Most troubling to me is the fact that Shanahan is fucking hard with Brandon Aiyuk. Mohamed Sanu AND fucking practice squad guy Travis Benjamin somehow jumped over Aiyuk on the depth chart. So our most versatile playmaker was on the bench for the first few drives.

The defense played great and should have won this one. They even got a turnover. Something not seen for a while.

I’m starting to lose my good feelings for Kyle Shanahan. He is turning into his father in being very inflexible and pig-headed to the detriment of the plays called and the outcomes of games.

I only got the NFLRZ pieces of the game and basically missed most of the ebb and flow.
I will watch the entire replay in coming days.
What I did see, looked very Kaep 2.0.
A QB eager to run, likely due to nervous energy at this stage.
Saw the goal line stuff, which looked exactly like a rookie doing what was called. Never looked long enough for an option and, didn’t put the ball ahead to break the plane,
He’ll learn, if he isn’t broken in 2 first. More games like this, and Trey will be joining the owie group and watching in street clothes.

The next 2 games are certainly winable but, our Offense can’t find a rhythm.
When the D holds an opponent like AZ under 20 pts, there’s no reason to lose,
Maybe someday soon, Shanny will empty the backfield on 1st down and stretch a defense?
Can’t live and die with Deebo for long without getting others into the mix.
Defenses will take him away sooner than later.
Gotta wonder if this is due to McDaniel getting the OC duties or, Shanny playing know it all?

  2. Winder says:

It’s back to the drawing board in my mind. We have got talent but much of it isn’t on the field. Turnovers on downs is just unacceptable. This game is totally on Shanny.

  3. alleykat69 says:

For a supposed offense guru,Shanny is getting offensive to watch with his play calling schemes.Has he ever thought of occasionally going for a 5 man receiver set like Cardinals and other teams apply are is that to much to ask?
Did like the hard running of Elijah Mitchell who’s clearly the lead back, he’s faster and tougher then Sermon but it still good to have them both in a league where it’s getting away from just a one dominant runner (Henry) u need handcuffs on your roster even more with injuries piling up every single week..

  4. unca_chuck says:

The main pisser with me is Aiyuk. The guy is a stud and is the best WR on the team, yet he’s relegated to 3rd string behind Sanu (dropped 40 yard pass) and Benjamin (taxi squad guy) to start the game.

Real smart to bench your best WR for your stupid little power play, Kyle. I’m getting pissed off at Shanahan. He’s turning into his father. A smarmy fucking prick who wants to prove himself as the smartest guy in the room regardless of if it helps the team or not.

Lighten the fuck up, Francis. You are losing the team by benching your best guy.

  5. unca_chuck says:

Shanahan had the gall to say Benjamin brings more speed to the WR position than Aiyuk. Did you throw him a deep pass? Of course not. Fuck. This season is far from over as we play all these guys again, and can catch back up pretty quick, but not with Shanahan and his stupid fucking play calls on 4th down.

    We were 1/5 on 4th downs, and 3/11 on 3d downs. 4/16!!!

There’s your offensive genius. Fuck that. Bunch everyone up and run to the middle.

Tell ya one thing, Lance better learn how to throw on the move or he will not last. He’s gonna need this season and next to develop his game based on the limited amount of time he has on the field.

Not worried yet, but this will be a work in progress. We might as well give him the keys now as Jimmy G isn’t wowing anyone with his shit games this year.

  6. alleykat69 says:

Yeah the whole Aiyuk situation is mystifying to me, I don’t give a shit if he has a bad attitude are what, he’s a NFL elite player and it’s not like they have many weapons with only Deebo out there now.Shit there’s many prima donna receivers( past and present)in the league and most coaches besides Shanahan know how to deal with them!
You don’t have the 2 guys Deebo&Samuel u drafted high together not playing together for any 3-4 backups. MAN UP SHANNY and your ultra ego stupid pride and play your best players!!

  7. alleykat69 says:

Defense really played great overall holding Arizona’s high powered offense to 17 points and really put pressure on Murray a lot.And wtf was that bs call moving the ball to the half yard line?when it was clearly holding in the endzone, and the 49ers getting a safety and the ball back, which would of cut it to 10-2 and who knows if they drive that next possession down for a score and go for 2 to tie it up 10-10??

One thing that needs to be cleaned up on the Defense is the secondary, bad calls are not they lead the whole NFL with 10 pass interference calls!

  8. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, a lot of bullshit calls. AZ got a lot of help. 5 holding calls in the 3rd quarter?

  9. unca_chuck says:

Norman had a horrible game. Those calls were fairly valid, but Johnson was totally interfered with by Hopkins going for the INT.

  10. Grumpy Guy says:

Only other thing I’ll add is to point out how terribly the right side of the O-line played. McGlinchey might not be a classic bust, but he was over-drafted and is one of those guys who is “just good enough to get you beat.” Old man J.J. Watt ate his lunch and stole his milk money yesterday. Brunskill is just not up to the task of being an NFL starter at guard. Banks was supposed to move him out, but Banks has done jack and shit in practice to justify a second round pick. None of the other (better) starters on the O-line were drafted here.

Teams that cannot draft offensive linemen are going to have a tough time in this league.

    • Grumpy Guy says:

Or, as PFF and Maiocco put it:

      Mike McGlinchey — 49.7

The right tackle had a rough go on Sunday. McGlinchey, who is usually a standout in the run blocking scheme, was stifled playing opposite of Watt much of the day and was graded a 37.4, the lowest on the offense.

In pass blocking, McGlinchey received a 66.1 grade allowing four pressures on 38 pass plays including one sack, two hits and one hurry.

      Daniel Brunskill — 46.9

Brunskill had trouble on the right side along with McGlinchey. His 13.7 pass blocking score was the lowest on the offense after allowing one hit and one hurry. The right guard’s 60.0 in run blocking brought up his overall score.

      • NJ49ER says:

Begins and ends in the trenches Grump –
McGlinchey has no sand in his pants to hold his ground.
Yeh, he can move and hit targets but, as you remind us, he wasn’t worthy of the slot he was picked in. I threw a fit when he was selected ahead of Minka Fitzpatrick.
        So it goes.

Insanity…..doing the same things over and over and expecting different results.

  11. alleykat69 says:

Now just to keep the hits coming on a cursed team, Trey Lance will be out with a sprained knee which will keep him out against Titans in 2 weeks!
But hey no worries cause Shanny will have his bromance boy Jimmy G ready to play, who was getting back the job anyways. This shit show of a season is over!
Lol Shanny’s comment on the Juice play on 4th and 1: I preferred a different option but the right personnel wasn’t in WTF maybe call a TO and get the right one in? Oh wait that’s right u already burned all your TO as well.So if Juice wasn’t go for the dive play, was he suppose to handoff?,run the option play lol, pass? What a mess Shanny has created.

    • NJ49ER says:

If Shanny continues to use him as a RB, I ain’t surprised at all AK.
Kaep 2.0 as it currently looks.
Gave up a kings’ ransom for him too.
      Other than that…….

      Shoot me.

  12. 12th Man says:

Jon Gruden resigns as the Raiders coach.

    • NJ49ER says:

Seems like Gruden has had enough huh?
Vulgarity and racist rants in emails regarding Goodell and DeMaurice apparently is much more detrimental than currently suggested?

      • NJ49ER says:

When the majority of your players are black and, you are exposed for racist remarks about them, it points out what a POS you are in general.
Thought for sure Urban would have been the first casualty in the HC ranks.
Getting harder and harder to have any interest in this game with all the garbage going on.

  13. unca_chuck says:

Throw in 28 penalties a game and there you have it. A product bogging down in its own mediocrity.

Fucking Shanny is an idiot for all those run plays. Their huge investment is supposed to carry the team in his first start.

  14. unca_chuck says:

This team is in a fucking tailspin. Shanny seems to be sabotaging his very costly QB at the altar of one game. Regardless of what I wanted them to do, it is a valid point that the 49ers could have kicked the FG early instead of sending Lance into harm’s way on the rollout and crushing blow he took on the goal line. It was early, AZ had just scored, and Lance getting points on the board could have given he and the team more confidence going forward.

    • NJ49ER says:

Smacks of desperation to me on Shanny’s part Chuck.
      He’s out of tricks.

      • alleykat69 says:

NJ…Oh no he still has his 2019 bromance Bust card pick at 67 ( when that could of moved up 3 spots to 64 and thus not having Seattle get him and just as laughable Scary Terry McLaurin was taken #76!) to make his debut Jalen Hurd who would instantly takes over Aiyuk spot before getting hurt walking back to the sideline tripping on the chain marker and blowing out an ACL/ hamstring are whatever..

      • NJ49ER says:

AK there have been several head scratchers for me regarding recent Draft picks.
        All have been on Offense.
McGlinchey, Hurd, Aiyuk and Sermon among them.
Who was the other bust RB Shanny moved up for? Joe Williams? Where is he now, Foot Locker?
Sure, I lean Defense but, with all the high Picks they’ve squandered and, the feckless showing thus far, hard to blame injuries as much as Shanny’s inability to adjust for them.

      • NJ49ER says:

It’s all I can do to stop myself from being too critical of the amount of Draft capital they surrendered for Trey too.
He’s got much to learn and, I’m fearful that Shanny may not be the guy to teach him.
Again, my gut reaction smacks of Kaep 2.0 after seeing what he thought was a viable game plan on Sunday.
Sprained knee aside, we’re lucky he wasn’t injured any worse.
We may need a passing game coordinator perhaps?
        Shanny is hung on run.

      • NJ49ER says:

I also heard, during the game in AZ, a comment comparing Trey to Cam Newton.
I threw up in my mouth a little.
We’re fucked, if that’s the plan Shanny had in mind, when he sold out the foreseeable future to get him.

  15. unca_chuck says:

Those picks are there for all to see. There have been a lot of bad ones. Mainly with the high picks. And the fact that Shanny was so willing to sacrifice Lance like that was utterly insane. Its like he has to prove to the team that he is the boss and they are all cannon fodder. Same deal with Aiyuk. The best playmaker on offense is relegated to 3rd string because Shanny has to impose his will on some perceived slight.

If this season goes into the tank, Jed has to fire Shanahan. His 5 years are up and he hasn’t done shit with the talent he has. I’m willing to let Lynch stick around because I think Shanny was the guy drafting the offense and Lynch the defense. The defensive picks have panned out better.

    Shanahan is becoming Cap’t. Bligh.

    • NJ49ER says:

      My football credo Chuck…
Protect the QB, sack the QB.
      We can sack the QB.
We’re failing to protect the QB.

I’ll try to be patient until we get through the next few games.
I didn’t buy the SB hype so much early on, simply to see what we had post Saleh and, Bosa’s ability to return from the ACL.
NOT at all impressed with the Offense.
The drafting of Trey, combined with the spineless qualities of Jimmeh in general, may have turned the locker room in a toxic direction?
Shanny is completely to blame for that scenario.
Can’t expect Jimmeh to give 100% when he’s a lame duck QB.
Should have made a deal for Jimmeh when they had a chance? Who knows.
Jimmeh made that crystal clear at the podium after the Seattle loss.
My calf hurts, it’s probably only a couple of weeks.
      He’s tapping out.
