There’s a new sheriff in town, and his name is Trey Lance. Kyle Shanahan decided not to follow last year’s path of throwing an injured and ineffective calf-inflicted Jimmy G into a game and watching him throw picks and flail and lose. Of course, now we have Lance, not The Beater or BDN. As usual though we are down a tight end, George Kittle is nursing a calf injury of his own that will sideline him for 3 weeks. And of course our kicker also hurt himself warming up.
Too much ice time? Our former NHL training staff doesn’t seem to be helping the cause, but who knows? Jeff Wilson blew out his knee in the locker room for fuck’s sake. Maybe they should rethink their personnel there.
But, on the field we have our new quarterback getting his first start. The recent track new guys so far is not very heartening.
Trey Lawrence: 0-4
Zach Wilson: 1-3
Justin Fields: 1-1
Mac Jones: 1-3
The wins of course are Tennessee, the Jets, and Detroit. We are playing the 4-0 Cardinals. But we nominally have a better foundation to work from. Trey Sermon is running well, and, uh, Samuel has had some nice games. The offense is struggling badly though. AZ is bad against the run, so I don’t expect to see a high-flying aerial attack, but Shanny HAS to take advantage of Lance’s deep ball ability.
Teams are playing us just like the bad old days of smash-mouth drop-your-pants football of Gore left, Gore right, Gore up the middle, punt. 9 in the box. 10 on the line. Samuel has already caught a couple nice deep passes. Do it 3-4 times a game, not a season.
The D is doing well enough to win games. Barring the fucking Green Bay debacle. ButKinlaw is questionable, Greenlaw is still out, and Warner is the only guy that can keep Murray under some kind of control. We NEED a pass rush from the outside, and we can’t lose contain on the edges. Like we always do with mobile QBs. The Rams did great on controlling Wilson by doing just that. Set the edge so there’s a long way to run just to GET outside, and have the LBs pursue.
We’ve done fairly well against Murray and Kliff Klavin, so we’ll see.
What do you all think, can the 49ers win this game? They don’t and their season is effectively tanked. They do and they’re right back in it. My view of Kyle Shanahan right now is in the shitter, both in terms of his abilities as a play caller and head coach and how he handles players, like Aiyuk. Offensive genius? My ass and I’m tired of every talking head in the league saying that. Bill Walsh was an offensive genius and nobody had better ever forget it. He’s the standard by which offensive geniuses are judged. Shanahan can’t carry his sweaty jockstrap.
Shanahan’s play calling and game planning is garbage right now and has been for quite some time. If coaches are also susceptible to slumps, then he’s in the middle of a doozy. We’ll see if things change with Lance, but I doubt they will. He’ll keep playing it safe and pounding it into the line. And if he doesn’t make a concerted effort to get Aiyuk fully involved in the offense, I’m going to shit. If he’s been trying to make a point with the kid, then that’s bullshit. He’s the most explosive player they have and pairing him effectively with Deebo would make it even harder on any defense.
And since George Kittle can’t fall down anymore without injuring himself, it’s time to get Dwelley more involved in the offense. He’s not the blocker Kittle is, but he’s improved in that area and he’s highly capable as a receiver and can do a lot of damage, especially if the defense is preoccupied with stopping Aiyuk and the great Deebo.
Time for Shanahan to start proving he’s worth that fat contract he signed, because right now the San Francisco 49ers are trending DOWN. This season is slipping away. Time to step up and shock the Cardinals.
Come on now John. Don’t hold back!
This won’t be the end of the season, but it’ll be a big step in the wrong direction. But I’m with you on Shanahan. All through that Sunday night game all I heard was about the offensive genius of Shanahan, but fuck that. Until he gets his team into the end zone, it’s all psycho babble. Granted, he has been stuck with Jimmy Gee-I’m-either-hurt-or-sucking, but in the end we lost 2 winnable games. And that’s on Shanahan.
We ARE gonna run against AZ since they suck at run defense, and that’s all well and good. Provided it works, and they can run play-action off it for some big chunk plays. Otherwise, we will see another long string of 3-and-outs and leaning on the defense as they wear down and we lose big in the end.
The way to create lanes for Lance is to send the WRs on medium to deep routes. Like EVERY FUCKING MOBILE QB WE FACE. Tired of this same shit over and over. Offensively and defensively.
This is a game that Nolan and Singletary would chuck their biscuits on. Harbaugh came up with some studly wins, but we are in Shanny’s 5th year, and we are not where we should be. A big loss here may bring down this coaching staff.
Well that’s not the start Lance needed after a couple decent plays he way over throws the receiver for a interception..
Yeah, looks like Lance is gonna have some growing pains. I agree that Shanny isn’t all that. It’s not what you say it’s what you do on the field.
The pisser is he had 10-12 running. He badly missed that throw though.
Rondale Moore is even faster then Murray!
Should of gave him the TD instead of having Connor Vulture it!!
Yeah Lance had plenty of room to run, Rookie pains!!
Fuck. Stupid play calls. 1st and 5 to 3rd and 7.
Fuck this. Stupid shit. Shanahan is a moron.
He must think the only thing to do is run up the fucking middle. Give Lance some space and see what he can do.
The 2 back bullshit is horrible.
So I see two WR only, if you are going to run on 4th and 2 put 4 WR out there to at least stretch the D. I don’t know what I am doing rooting for a team that loves the run for the last 15 years,.
Kelvin Benjamin has apparently jumped over Aiyukk on the depth chart.
What the actual fuck.
This has become pretty much what I feared.
Aiyuk has been in the doghouse since TC. Something happened. We’ll probably never know what.
I read that Kyle did not think Aiyuk was not giving it his all during training camp. The way the Niner players get hurt all year I would let Aiyuk cruise during TC
Oh well. He goes high he gets in. Nice drive though.
Wow, Drops all over the place. I’m really concerned about the way the throws come out of Lance’s hand. He throws one ugly looking ball. Long, slow delivery. Those things add up to inaccurate passes. But Sanu dropping a ball like that is inexcusable.
Norman is getting abused out there.
So AZ has 3rd and 1, 3 WR, Niners are playing for the run, 1. On 1 for the D, a simple pass to get the first down
Great play by Bosa, but it looks like he hurt himself.
Shanahan is in his 5th season? I didn’t realize that.
The pass protection ain’t good. #69 is still lousy.
I dunno, it’s kind of comforting to see that McGlinchey blows as much now as he ever has. Pass rushers have to be drooling when they see they’ll be lining up across from his ass. So much for his big renaissance.
What a shit show.
McGlinchey is coming unglued.
Wow, a touchdown. How quaint. Time for the D to come up with their second turnover.
How come there is no Offensive holding on a receiver, that WR for AZ was holding the Niners player arms down. Would have been an INT
These officials are out of hand with the flags.
Crappy call,
What a retarded play call. Shanahan still in a play calling slump.
That’s a fumble.
Lance with that low 3/4 delivery is always going to have a lot of passes knocked down.
What a nightmare this season is turning into.
Shanahan can stick it up his ass with terrible play calling, burning valuable TO’s , the play with Juice was a joke the Cards sniffed it out immediately and put 2 defenders right over the center, wtf bootleg with Lance are hand it off to Mitchell who’s was pounding the ball hard, fed up with Shanahan and his unimaginative schemes..
Refs were severely out of control today. 95% of them on the Niners. Lance has a bit of work to do hitting passes on the move. To say the least. And Shanny is following in is father’s footsteps though in sacrificing his mobile QB to a ton of carnage. RG III redux.
Still and all another game that could have been won if not for bad 4th down play calls and stupid read-pass option shit that did nothing but lose yards. The defense was solid but for a couple breakdowns in coverage. We had solid pressure for the most part and stopped their runs, and even Murray didn’t hurt too bad, but a loss is a loss.Last place. 0-2 in the division.
That’s the kick in the groin Chuck, 0-2 in the Division.
Granted it’s early and, it ain’t so much how you start, it’s how you finish in this game.
BUT….
I’ll join the chorus and repeat the point the point that Shanny has been exposed.
Kingsbury gets the ball everywhere and forces the D to react.
Shanny allows the D to sit on his tendencies and win the chess game, more often than not.
Trey will settle down with game reps but, I’m already seeing stories of Shanny giving the reigns back to Jimmeh once he’s off the owie list.
Not so sure one start and a week off helps Trey in any postive way.
DeAndre Hopkins gets away with PI on that deep pass that could have been picked. The one last week on Warner was 1/10 the contact but extended the Seattle drive.
Once again, the play breaks down for Lance and the deep pass catcher is the fullback. Benjamin and Sanu got the nod over Aiyuk to start. I’m starting to wonder if Shanahan has a power complex. He’s not putting the best guys on the field. And the play calling once again was atrocious. All of the 4th down calls were terrible. Lance did miss Mitchell on the roll out that he tried to power in. He should have kept his eyes up.
But hey, it only took 53 minutes to throw a ball deep. Fuck this.
Definite homer flagfest with the zebras today. Chuck the flag and huddle to decide what should be called?
The great equalizer on the betting line. OFFICIATING.
Shanahan can’t get around his own ego. It’s proving to be his undoing.
This KC Buff game is 12 minutes old and there have been 11 penalties?
And in the time it took to write this there have been 3 more.
New thread is up.
