Preseason Done-zo (SD 27 – SF 24)

The Beater got his shot to play with the 1.5’s and did alright. Certainly didn’t stink up the joint as he went 6-9 for 58 yards, and if not for the weeekly drop by Bourne, he would have been 7-9 and 82 yards. He threw a nice TD to Bourne as well as he seems to drop easy ones, and catch the tougher ones.  Better still was his 25 yards downfield block on Jeff Wilson’s 41 yard reverse run for the Niners first TD.

No major injuries, and not much news so far about cuts as the first 9 to go have been goned. They are:

DL Jay Bromley
CB Chris Campbell
DB Jordan Holland
CB Dontae Johnson
OL Wesley Johnson
TE Tyree Mayfield
CB Quinten Rollins
RB Brandon Wilds
T Sam Young

The most surprising is our former starting CB Dontae Johnson. I imagine we will be seeing some more familiar names in the next couple days. (Wilton Speight)

And either Bourne goes, or Matthews. I’m leaning toward Matthews just because Bourne is younger and has more upside.

Bourne is toast. He’s been dropping balls all preseason. Matthews, who I didn’t give a shot to make the team, has been solid if not spectacular. We need someone to play the slot with Taylor out, and Matthews and James fit the bill.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

I believe that Bourne is the odd man out also. I also expect he’ll be a Seahawk by early next week.

  2. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Shit, I just hope Jeff Wilson makes the team. He’s killing it. And he did well last year in his limited action.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Me too. Put McKinnon on IR and make room for him. The only knock on him was his last years fumbles but I don’t think he fumbled so far this year. I could be wrong.

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Nope. No fumbles for Wilson. The guy that fumbled in camp was Coleman. He had 3 in a week, but I don’t think he’s had one since.

K Street as well will go on the IR, but that likely opens up a spot for Jullian Taylor. Joshua Garnett is the biggest bubble guy on the team. The Chron is saying he won’t make the cut but I think he does. Gonna lose some decent players.

  4. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Oh yeah, Adrian Colbert re-aggravated his hammy and prolly will not make the team either. That was the only injury of note against the chargers.

Javedon Clowney traded to Seattle for 2 player and a 3rd rd pick, sucks to have in in our division!

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    Wow. This sucks.

CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora has confirmed that the Texans have finalized a multi-player trade with the Seahawks that will send Clowney to Seattle. In exchange for Clowney, the Seahawks will be sending Barkevious Mingo, Jacob Martin and a 2020 third-round draft pick to Houston, according to MMQB.com.

though to watch shit like this and not be at least a little concerned that we are run by buffoons.

  8. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Texas must have really wanted to get rid of Clowney, Seattle sent them a couple of LB’s that aren’t even all that good.
Pretty sure the FO tried to trade Garnett and I am also sure no one was interested. Another Baalky pick that totally sucked. Looks like Bourne is still a Niner.

  9. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

i mean, maybe they did want to get rid of Clowney but they may also have just handed over free gold to the Seahawks. Will suck if he stays healthy and wrecks havoc for them

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah, you gotta give it to the Seattle FO. Texas is an organization that is heading in the wrong direction and that’s to bad because they do have some players

McKinnon placed on season ending IR.

  11. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Well, bust my britches – Bourne and James made the 53 and Matthews was cut.

That was what I thought going into training camp. I switched Bourne and Matthews after all was said and done.

James made it. That’s all I cared about out of all the bubble spots.

  12. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

4 TEs and 7 WRs and only 3 safeties. We’ll be making a couple moves yet.

  13. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Lynch said that Bosa will be ready to practice by Monday.

  14. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Skule made the 53 i bet they were afraid he would have got snagged off the PS. He is probably one of those that will be on the inactive lists for the most part

  15. Winder's avatar Winder says:

surprised about harris i wonder if he qualifies for the PS

Tend to think Stanford football players don’t have a long life expectancies in the NFL..

    List of cuts:

Chris Campbell (CB) Andrew Lauderdale (OL) Daniel Helm (TE)
Sam Young (OT) Austin Walter (RB) Ross Reynolds (OL)
Tyree Mayfield (TE) Najee Toran (G) Elijah Lee (LB)
Jay Bromley (DT) Jordan Thompson (DL) Jamell Garcia-Williams (DL)
Dontae Johnson (CB) Chris Thompson (WR) Jeff Wilson Jr. (RB)
Wesley Johnson (OL) Wilton Speight (QB) Damontre Moore (DE)
Quinten Rollins (CB) Tyree Robinson (S) Antone Exum Jr. (S)
Brandon Wilds (RB) LaRoy Reynolds (LB) Adrian Colbert (S)
Jordan Holland (DB) Malik Henry (WR) Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (LB)
Josh Garnett (G) Marcell Harris (S) David Mayo (LB)
Jeremiah Valoaga (DE) Kevin Givens (DL) Jordan Mathews (WR)

Biggest surprise to me was Harris. We dumped a lot of safeties, and I thought he was playing well enough. I guess they were impressed enough with DJ Reed, who can play all 5 defensive backfield spots, but Jimmie Ward is about to get hurt again, and we’ll need someone else.

Mathews or Bourne was about 51-49% bourne for me mainly because he’s young. If he fixes the dropsies he’ll be better than Mathews.

Bummed about Wilson, because Brieda is also a bit injury-prone himself. I think they can stash him on the Taxi squad but I think he’d get nabbed.

    • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

I also want Wilson on the PS and I don’t think he’ll be claimed off of waivers. He did fumble twice while getting his 100 yards Thurs. night, though one was a comedy of errors -terrible snap, terrible handoff.

Gotta think the NFCW has a leg up on QB sacks now with Clowney and Ziggy joining the Division.
Let’s hope Saleh & Kocurek can deliver.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Nice, a very special player and probably the best the Niners ever had. That is truly saying something when you consider all the great backs we’ve had. 1st ballot HOFer.

  20. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Well looks like we got back some pretty good players for our PS. the list is at 49ers.com

  21. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

0 players cut by the Niners claimed off of waivers by other teams
0 waiver claims put in by Niners

    • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

We did pick up FA Ryan Pope very very recently of the Lions for our practice squad. OT 6’7” 315 massive human being and highest paid UDFA in the league by the Lions

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    Taxi Squad list:

    LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
    DL Kevin Givens
    S Marcell Harris
    TE Daniel Helm
    WR Malik Henry
    LB Elijah Lee
    G Ross Reynolds
    DL Jeremiah Valoaga
    RB Jeff Wilson Jr.

Harris Wilson ad Lee I think are most at risk to being claimed.
