Game Day III – Season of the Witch

These tough games are coming fast and furious for the upstart youngsters that are the 49ers. They played tough but sloppy against the Vikings (a game they should have won by 14), they played great against the Lions. For 3 quarters. Now we face the hottest QB in one of the hardest road venues in the NFL, Arrowhead Stadium.

They lost their best offensive weapon in Marquise Goodwin in that Minn loss, and were down to 3rd string LBs in the Detroit win. The good news is Malcolm Smith will finally play a meaningful down after missing his first 18 games. Even more significant than that is the return of Reuben Foster. So I think the defense rallies.

Which is why I think the 49ers win tomorrow. Yeah, it’s another early start for a west coast team in a hostile environment, against the hottest QB in the NFL in Pat Mahomes, but I think their defense will be their downfall. I think our defense makes more plays against our improved D (and a hopefully healthier Ahkello Witherspoon), so we win.

My concern is what it has been since before training camp started. And that is our pass rush.  DeForest Buckner is actually #2 in sacks at 3.5, but the rest of the team is at 1.5. Which sucks. The return of our LBs, and the havoc they bring (I see Foster blitzing) should be able to slow down the Mahomes express.

What’s Shanahan bitching about? The measurements stopped the clock twice

  2. alleykat69 says:

Now that was a cool design play!

  3. Irish Kevin says:

2 score game no hurry up offense, so you are going to rely on your D to stop KC’s offence…brilliant

  4. unca_chuck says:

Can’t take these sacks down close.

  5. Lurker John says:

Why the fuck does he hold the goddamn ball so long?

  6. Irish Kevin says:

    Yep brilliant

  7. unca_chuck says:

    Unreal!@ CAN’T TAKE THESE SACKS!

  8. Lurker John says:

    JG has no pocket feel

  9. unca_chuck says:

    Stupid play, Jimmy

  10. Lurker John says:

    now JG is hurt

  11. 12th Man says:

    huge helmet to helmet hit.

  12. alleykat69 says:

And now the season is possibly over..

  13. Maggie Horowitz says:

    JG, YOU IDIOT!!

  14. Lurker John says:

That was an unbelievably stupid play. WTF was he thinking

  15. unca_chuck says:

That half a fucking yard you went for didn’t help much.

  16. unca_chuck says:

We do that, it’s a penalty.

  17. Lurker John says:

JG is done with a knee.

  18. 12th Man says:

    WTF

  19. Maggie Horowitz says:

The refs suck mother fucking cock

  20. alleykat69 says:

    Fuck these refs!!
    There all on the take!!

  21. Lurker John says:

Fuck all NFL officials. They are fucking up a great sport.

  22. unca_chuck says:

CJ!!!!! Wow. OPI. Horrible call. Unbelievable. Why kick the FG? FUUUUUUUCK!!!!

The reffing is unbelievable. Juscyck did nothing on that play.

  23. unca_chuck says:

Fuck the NFL. They are ruining the sport. 5 of these calls are imaginary. They mioght as well throw a flag on every fucking play.

  24. 12th Man says:

Refs have just been horrible, 90% against the 9ers.

  25. Lurker John says:

JG looks to be done for the season. What a goddamn moron. CJ it is.

  26. unca_chuck says:

Aaaaaaand another flag. Ticky tack bullshit.

  27. alleykat69 says:

Every fucking 3 rd down stops turns into a automatic 1st downs after this fucking crew calls a penalty!!

  28. unca_chuck says:

HTe beaurty of the new NFL is onsides kicks are impossiblew now what with the players being forced to stand motionless until the ball is kicked.

  29. Irish Kevin says:

Can you say home field advantage

  30. unca_chuck says:

Unreal. Had it to 7 points and the refs take it away.

  31. unca_chuck says:

If calls this bad are going to be made on a regular basis, every fucking penalty should be reviewed.

  32. unca_chuck says:

At least penalties that change the outcome of a given game so much.

    • 12th Man says:

The same crew called Mathews for roughing the passer last week, what was a textbook tackle, is now being used to teach refs what IS roughing the passer.

  33. unca_chuck says:

And we puss our way to letting 2 third down runs. Sad.

  34. unca_chuck says:

Well, we get to see if BeatHard can come in and play.

This season is still as it was before. Tough early, easier late. Just got to hope against hope that Jimmy isn’t done for the season.

    • 12th Man says:

We don’t know anything about the injury yet, might not be serious, he did it when he made a cut inside. I thought he looked concussed on the cart.

      • Lurker John says:

They don’t usually cart guys off the field when it’s not serious. They evaluated his knee on the sideline. My guess is that the preliminary diagnosis is torn ACL.

  35. unca_chuck says:

The refs need to be held more accountable for calls like that.

Josh Allen stomps the Vikings. Fuck Minnesota and fuck KC.

  36. Lurker John says:

14 flags for 147 yards. That’s hard to get your mind around, doesn’t even seem possible. The officials have way too much input into the outcome of these games, their own guy said the call on Juice was bullshit. And now your “franchise QB” looks to be done for the year. Every game it’s 3-6 injuries.

I love the fight they showed, but this franchise is still a disaster, with massive holes on defense and a dicey offensive line. No pass rush and a lousy secondary. You’d think a team run by a HoF safety would figure out how to draft quality secondary players. So far, nope. The constant mistakes with penalties, drops, missed assignments and blown coverages falls squarely on the shoulders of the coaching staff.

Mucho, mucho work yet to be done. Next man up? CJ Beathard, with Mullens getting called up from the PS as the backup.

  37. Lurker John says:

  38. Irish Kevin says:

With the way KC was scoring I still think clock management was terrible. There was no rush to get things going

  39. unca_chuck says:

This is a young team, John. A team that has completely turned over its roster in 2 years. It takes time to get new players and to stack the entire lineup with talent. We are thin and it shows. Yes, we need a pass rush. But we’ve drafted a tom of D linemen and we are getting minimal production from them.

Next season we will likely go defense yet again as we need a pass rusher and more DB help.

Sure, I had optimism, and these 2 bad losses were actually in the realm of possibility that they could have won, but unfortunately we are playing the refs on the road and the Niners catch no breaks from them. As shitty as we played, we should have had the score 38-31 with 6+ minutes left.

    • 12th Man says:

That lousy “franchise QB” put up a heck of a fight and a lot of points in the second half. Highlighting one obvious overthrow as vindication of consistent criticism of him makes no sense. LJ isn’t a big fan of JG and he has his right to the opinion and now maybe we get to see what BeatHard has learned.

      • Lurker John says:

Lousy is your word, not mine.

LJ is a big fan of JG. If you don’t know that, you have a short memory. I was as high on high him as anyone else, I’m just not going to sugarcoat poor plays. But there’s reason for concern when a guy consistently holds the ball too long in the pocket, takes bad sacks, forces throws into coverage and doesn’t have enough sense to simply run out of bounds on a scramble. He’s showing some negative traits we didn’t see last year, that’s all I’m saying. Overall he had a good game today, but now he looks to be done for the season, barring a miraculous MRI.

    • Lurker John says:

Like I said, I love the fight.

  40. Lurker John says:

That begs the question, is there a highly rated edge rusher available in the upcoming draft?

    • alleykat69 says:

Nick Bosa (Joey’s younger brother)Ohio St is the top rated DE..
      LJ.Followed by Ed Oliver Clemson,
It looks like a banner year on DE lots of talent on the D line coming out!!

      • Lurker John says:

Good! With JG done for 14 months or so, the Niners may be in prime position for a good draft pick come April.

  41. Lurker John says:

Some nice examples of how effective McGlinchey has been in the running game:

  42. Flavor says:

well that was fun while it lasted. At least we’ll get another good draft pick next season.

  43. Flavor says:

    ouch.

    • Lurker John says:

Who’s going to get fired after the third game of the season? Not sure who Krueger is referencing here. It’s not hard to agree about AA, Ward and Thomas, though. Thomas didn’t even have one tackle today.

  44. Maggie Horowitz says:

The defense sucked donkey kong. Completely unprepared.

  45. rtfirefly says:

I’ve got to think Saleh’s seat is heating up. The pressure on this awful D is now going to be unreal. And I thought this D would be good. Hahahahahaha

    • Lurker John says:

The defensive preparation and game planning has been very poor this season. There’s one guy that falls on.

  46. alleykat69 says:

This just sucks with Jimmy G. I can’t go thru 13 more games of CJ Beathard getting His bell rung every week!! Geez and then we have Mullen’s??behind him? yeah inspiring football coming up..

  47. alleykat69 says:

And to vent more, Richard Sherman the only DB that looks good out there, will now be a crystal Todd Shell out there the rest of the year with his heal/Calf /age all working against him. Yet he still is are best secondary guy, and that should say a lot how good he is,and the rest stink with blown coverages everywhere..

  48. Winder says:

Reminds me of the 78-79 SF defenses. Couldn’t stop anyone. That was truly a fucked up game to watch.

  49. NJ49er says:

It would seem the disarray is within the Secondary. Pass rush and Secondary play hand-in-hand.
Jeff Hafley is the DBs Coach and could be taking direction from Saleh.
Saleh trying to implement the Seattle-system with Hafley, (former Browns connection) may not be meshing it would seem.

    Injuries happen, I get it.
But, in a game where contact is getting scrutinized on every play, I can’t help but wonder how much these rules changes are impacting the players’ normal tendencies (and tackling techniques) to the point where they might just be ‘throwing shoulders’ while losing composure and focus in the process?
It’s getting damn near unwatchable with all the laundry being tossed around.
Matthews in GB got nailed again for sacking Alex in a big spot in DC today.
These Officials are literally deciding the games. (How convenient for Vegas huh?)

Not exactly missing my Sunday Ticket at this point. When I do get to watch the re-airs, at least all the BS has already been removed.

    • NJ49er says:

Hafley has some good meat on his rèsumè but, who calls the shots overall?
Would seem Saleh is wearing the horns right now.
Also, I’m not sold on Foster in coverage duty. Warner is showing promise there IMO.

Can’t nit-pik too much, they again had their chances. Problem is, we’re getting in holes and not taking the opponents weapons away.
Good job on KHunt and the ground game. Not so much with Tyreek today.

  50. unca_chuck says:

What kills mer is the absolute inability to cover backs out of the backfield. Time and time again teams get 15 yards on 3rd down by simply dumping it to a back circling out of the backfield.

Detroit is beating the shit out of New England, Would be nuts if this holds up. One more score by Det and they could put this away. But Detroit has to follow the rule of committing a penalty on every punt return.

    • NJ49er says:

Hence my comment on Foster in coverage Chuck. Little I saw today Foster was slow to recognize his responsibilities in that regard.
I had LAC tagged as a W before the season unfolded. After 3 weeks, I’m not so sure anymore.
Our issues today were eerily similar to our years of futility against Russell while we chased Mahomes around and lost focus in the Secondary. The good news is, Rivers won’t scramble so, there’s a possibility of maintaining some discipline perhaps.

Now, more than ever, we need to control TOP and run like Detroit is/was doing to NE tonight. CJ isn’t going to scare anyone who is scheming against us now.
My early 9-7 optimism is suddenly being readjusted to 6-10 otherwise.

  51. unca_chuck says:

We could always get Kappy back. Throw in Eric Reid to boot. We are running out of bodies.

  52. unca_chuck says:

of course Detroit puckers up and stops passing. And stops trying to put the hammer down.

  53. NJ49er says:

And how does this not qualify as tampering?

    • unca_chuck says:

Jerry Jerkoff has his own rules

      • NJ49er says:

No.. Jerrah is ‘connected’ to the policy process. Just like Kraft and the Mara’s among others.
Politics and Football. Officiating is their ‘control’ week to week.
I felt good telling AT&T to stick it when I canceled The Ticket.
They’re destroying the game with all their ‘Control’.

  54. unca_chuck says:

There’s another horrible call. You can’t block on an INT?

  55. unca_chuck says:

Eli Harold with more sacks tonight than 5 years in SF.

    • NJ49er says:

Never thought Harold was utilized properly in SF.
      Square peg/Round hole?
Saleh better know what he’s shopping for. So far, I’m not impressed.
I also wonder if his Anthem antics, along with Kaep and Reid had anything to do with it?

  56. unca_chuck says:

Crazy. Detroit loses to the Niners and beats NE.

    • NJ49er says:

Matt Patricia vs Matt Stafford in this one me thinks.
Advantage Patricia in knowing his opponent WAAAY better 😀

  57. NJ49er says:

One thing is very easy to figure for DCs with CJ.
    They’ll take away Kittle.
Someone else better show up and make himself known. Quick.

  58. unca_chuck says:

Goodwin was starting to do that. Was Pettis even playing? Garcon has done little to nothing. He had an early drop as well.

    • NJ49er says:

I’ll dissect the re-air during the week to see the entire debacle for myself Chuck.
Can’t say much more than the obvious. Our Defense is not getting it done.
Had hopes of our D being a better deterrent to a young QB today.
Next time I feel optimistic I’ll be sure to slam my junk in a door.

  59. unca_chuck says:

I’m with ya, NJ. Well not the junk part. But I thought the D would be significantly better than shown. Butler was shutdown, AA was nowhere, and the LBs were out of position time and again. We were out coached on defense.

5 straight TDs is not getting it done. Never mind the penalties. Jesus. What a mess.

    • NJ49er says:

Hard to get my head around ‘The Plan’ once again Chuck.
I assumed Saleh/Lynch were onto something Seattle-system related, with the signings of MSmith/Sherman and Drafting Thomas/Foster etc.
Granted it takes time but this isn’t year one anymore.
AkWitherspoon getting schooled, Foster looking lost in coverage assignments.Thomas hardly making a highlight and, 3 guys in coverage today watching Tyreek grab a deep pass, with no one in position to put up a fight?
      Total confusion.

      • NJ49er says:

Now we have what looks like a replay of last year starting all over again.
Nothing short of a mess, with 2 very well paid guys, JMck and Jimmy collecting those big checks to rehab knee injuries.
Add shoulder injuries to Tartt, Ward riding the injury list and Kittle with the dropsies. Colbert dinged as well.
When does the carnage end and organized results begin?

        Not looking pretty…
        I’ll curb my enthusiasm now.
No reason to see something that isn’t there. No matter my hopes for success.

The Good Ship Lynch/Shanny is listing, and taking on water.
        Glub…..Glub 😦

  60. NJ49er says:

Gotta wonder now, (out loud), is Saleh in over his head?
Getting prior Seattle guys via FA to run the Defense ‘For Him’?
Is he ‘Coordinating’ anything with the Secondary Staff?
    Coaching up ‘The Kids’?

Doesn’t look like we’ve made much progress other than being better at stopping the Run.
Fat Men in the Middle kinda do that as rule.
They need help with organized stunts to get to the QB though.
That part is still not showing up either.

  61. unca_chuck says:

As I said before, this is a young team. I thought we had a little more depth than last year, but that went quickly. I figured there’d still be struggles, but not this bad. The linebackers didn’t make any plays. The D line was negated completely. We were outcoached badly by the Walrus.

New thread is up. We are back down in the dregs of the 5 win teams it seems.

I guess it’ll be kinda interesting how well Beathard does.

    New thread is up.

  62. unca_chuck says:

Speaking of stunts, it seems the only one we run is Armstead coming underneath Buckner. We get NO pressure up the middle.
