Speaking of Scotty . . .

Hell of a game by the Warriors last night as James Harden and Chris Paul resumed their cool on- and off-court relationship to crap their way to 32 points on 33 shots (ouch) and get stomped by 41. But, I digest . . .

Scotty McCloughan was asked recently whether he thought the 49ers took tackle Mick McGlinchey too high in the recent draft. Scotty graded out the 6-8 tackle from Notre Dame as a 1-1 grade — which equals a Top 10 pick in his book — after watching film of his junior year.

His response was:

“I liked him a lot. I liked the size, I liked the length. I liked the toughness. … Everyone’s going to say he’s a right tackle. I think he’s a left tackle through and through. I like his intelligence, his instincts for the position. I liked the angles he would take and the fact that he wanted to finish.”

Scotty now runs his own scouting service after his stints with the Niners, Seahawks and Redskins; building all into playoff, if not Super Bowl, teams. The Browns hired him on a short-term basis this past off-season to work on the Browns draft.

Sure, this and $5.50 gets you a half-caff-sugar-free-vanilla latte, but what the hey? We got a shitload of downtime here till the season starts.

He also said he didn’t like the Pettis pick because he doesn’t play big. I know Scotty can pick some defensive players but if I remember correctly WR wasn’t one of his strong points.

WR is as big a black hole for ther Niners as OFers are for the Giants. Can’t draft ’em.

  3. unca_chuck says:

As far as Scotty goes, Pettis won’t be playing against Richard Sherman!

If these young Giant outfielders can stay off the DL maybe we can evaluate them better.
Shaw ( groin injury) Williamson (concussion) Slater&Duggar injuries too .Just when you hope they can push an aging vet out, they get hurt slowing down the process..

    • Winder says:

Totally agree, they have all played some pretty good ball at times. It is just that none of them really stick out. I guess most of that has to do with playing time.

McG will be groomed to replace Staley when Staley’s contract is eventually up. There are those (like ND) who think he’s a natural at RT, not so much at LT. Either way, he’ll play for a long time. McKinnon’s outside runs to the right should a whole lot of fun to watch this season for a change (like Gore inside runs behind Iaputi used to be).

The Rockets aren’t dead yet. Steph was on fire in Game 3, but that’s the first time I’ve seen that since before his injury. The Cavs series two years ago has made me leery about celebrating early.

Let’s see, who would I trust to know better who would fit in well in Shanny’s offense at a skill position, Scotty or Shanny? Hmmm, give me a few minutes…

    Speaking of NFL execs
“Longtime 49ers executive John McVay said the current 49ers front office reminds him of the days when McVay, Bill Walsh and Eddie DeBartolo were in charge.”

  7. Nipper says:

The one thing that is apparent Lynch and his men draft guys with a purpose in mind. They must fit what they intend to run. The WR pick may prove to be just what is needed for the current Niners system. Shanahan has a sharp idea for talent and weighs in on the draft too. His input is important.

    • Winder says:

Yeah, it looks like we now have a competent FO. To be honest I think Shanny has a lot of input about the draft and is the real architect of the offense. I also think Selah has a lot of say. Lynch and the scouting staff handle the player evaluations and have specific visions as to where they will fit in the puzzle. To be honest I don’t really know all that entails being a GM for a pro team but I bet he is a busy man.

    Damn!

  11. Rob says:

I can hardly believe it but we are down to just one starter on offense who was with the team when Shanny and Lynch took over ! Talk about stealth rebuilds wow

  12. unca_chuck says:

    That’s fairly amazing, Rob.

NFL now says it will fine players for kneeling during the anthem. Way to go, Goodie Goodell. Knuckling under to the corporate interests. A victory for the (corporations) people.
