Days of Future Passed . . .

Journey Through the Past? Back to the Future? Return to Forever? Well, anyhoo Colin Kaepernick, newly freed from his injury-guaranteed contract, is magically healed and ready to play despite the talk that he needed to bulk up and get more ready. I guess a 1-4 record doesn’t engender confidence in the guy who was supposed to be better than CK.

Either way, I guess we get to see what I thought could be interesting oh so many months ago when Jimmy Bag-of-Donuts farted his way out of the locker room. And that is for Chip Kelly and Colin Kaepernick play their style of up-tempo football. Whether it’s one, done, and dash remains to be seen, but bet your bottom dollar that Kappy will get 10 x the scrutiny that the 33rd best rated AB in the NFL did.

And therein lies the rub. Colin and his kneeling for the anthem actually has generated a lot of talk, and controversy around the country, and even the world. He himself, then team, and one of his teammates have donated a cool mill each to various inner-city charities, so there’s that. So, whether you agree with the protest, it has done some good.

Oh yeah. The game? Shit, I don’t know. Buffalo on the road? Rex Ryan and his hard-hitting D? It’s pretty tough spot to put Kappy in, but there’s nothing easy about being an NFL quarterback. Trial by fire I suppose. The biggest difference between last year and this is the line is nominally playing better in the passing game. They were doing fine until last week’s debacle and subsequent passing every down and cratering.

Buffalo famously shit-canned OC Greg Roman, and for some reason the defense got better. And, shockingly the run game as well under Tony Lynn. Then again they have beaten the Rams, the Brady-less Pats, and the Cards. They did lose to the Jets (?!?). Who knows. Tough roadie for sure.

  1. Nipper says:

My prediction: 49ers will lose another. Kap will throw a couple of picks. Skeebers will cry fowl! Spit will declare himself free of fandom while insisting on posting on the “other” blog.

  2. unca_chuck says:

Thats the spirit, Nip! I have no idea what to expect. Would like to see Kappy hit the passes that Gabby has been missing. That ain’t asking too much, is it?

  3. NJ49er says:

    9ers – 23
    Bills – 17
    If we don’t stop McCoy
    Bills – 27
    9ers – 21

    • NJ49er says:

Statistically, by comparison, both teams suck.
The team that runs/stops the run wins.
Kaep can boost the percentages if he can make some throws that count.
I see this game as MEH.

  4. Winder says:

I have no idea what to expect, Buffalo 35-23

  5. 12th man says:

It will be interesting to see what Kap can do with more time in the pocket. My guess if Ryan will focus on taking away the run Hyde and Kap and will make Kap beat them with his arm.

As to score I have no idea but hoping for a Niners win of course.

  6. Nipper says:

I’m hoping for a full tank of gas and a two block head start. All I need is a destination. Damn the rain is coming…….at least the streets are wet barely. Perhaps all that Kap needs is a rousing Knute Rockne speech. Can the Chipper deliver this kind of speech?

  7. Irish Kevin says:

If Kaep really wants out of SF/Santa Clara, he is going to have to perform, and that means making passes greater than 10 yards down the field, I also see Kaep running more.

  8. Nipper says:

Ginsburg is sorry she was so harsh on Kap for protesting racial injustice. Kap’s stature grows by the day off the field of play. Now for some glory on the field of play! We all can get behind that.

  9. unca_chuck says:

See? Some people admit they were ill-informed on their stance and changed it with more information. Go RBG.

I’m sure Kappy will keep that in mind as he’s dodging linebackers trying to kill him. How this game goes is a little less obvious than the upcoming election, but we’ll find out on Sunday.

Jesus. The playpen is hysterical. Phil doesn’t understand how racism gets pointed at only one race.

You can’t make this shit up. Gee do you remember the history of the United States, skippy? We treated those Indians real well, didn’t we? And 400 years of slavery? Pish posh. A trifle.

And he thinks the middle class is abandoning Clinton. Don’t really want to get into politics, but I think the guy from the islands took a few too many coconuts to the head.

  10. unca_chuck says:

Win one for the Nipper, Chip. Or is it win one for the Chipper, Kap?

  11. rtfirefly says:

Yeah, it’s too bad. I’ve been wasting my time on there this year. Spitty literally read my mind in his mocking post yesterday (except he got “Nazi” wrong, I was thinking “Fascist”). It used to be a good football blog. I guess Kappy starting is just eating those guys alive.

  12. rtfirefly says:

    Here’s my dream scenario:
    1) Kappy kicks ass, not just in Buffalo but for the rest of the season. Kurt Warner’s pocket presence lessons sink in more and more as the season progresses.
    2) The Niners still lose. A lot. Bad D, untimely fumbles, stuff not Kappy’s fault.
    3) Baalke gets fired with the latest evidence #3.
    4) Kappy exercises his 1 year option and makes noises about wanting to stay long term based on #4.
    5) Niners draft really high.

  13. rtfirefly says:

    *Baalke fired…evidence #2

  14. rtfirefly says:

    *Kappy exercises…based on #3

LOL, my apologies! I can’t count or something.

  15. Nipper says:

It’s time for Berger to tell me how the Niners will win in Buffalo. I gots to know!

    • NJ49er says:

They win in Buffalo by running and stopping McCoy Nipper.
      Simple as that.
Don’t stop the run? Lose by a TD, maybe more.

  16. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, what just makes me laugh is the front office did to Kaepernick exactly what they did to Harbaugh. And the idiot brigade doesn’t see it.

    • Nipper says:

Meanwhile on the “other” blog angry white guys get together and grouse about politics and the state of the Niners. They have to be white males because who else is so angry lately? I’m glad they don’t have pitchforks and guns as it would really get messy over there!

      • Winder says:

It’s actually kinda fun over there. I mean there really is nothing good anyone can say about the Niners. And I am angry over the whole Kap situation, as chuck would say ‘what a clusterfuck’ this has turned out to be. I don’t expect much from him this week but then I wouldn’t expect much from any QB at this point. I mean Kerly(sp) is out go to guy.

  17. Nipper says:

In the words of Chuck’s dog summing up the last few years of the Niner experience: “Woof, woof, woof.”

  18. Berger says:

Nipper- Niners win by scoring more points, which I am not predicting.

I’m off Kap’s bandwagon because he asked for a trade not because of his politics. I don’t like his activism. I don’t agree with his stance for one moment. When he sat it pissed me off, kneeling does not make me happy but I can handle it enough to stomach it. His politics won’t make me root against him. The fact he doesn’t seem to want to be a 49er could but it won’t. I’ll be rooting for him as long as he is wearing a 49er uniform. I always root for the 49ers to win.

My prediction is a close loss. If the line gives Kap time to throw we will win but AZ showed how to get pressure with 4 linemen by running stunts. I’m worried our 4.5 game span of the QB having time to throw is precarious going forward and Kap isn’t a QB who has a history of helping his linemen by getting the ball out hot or looking for short routes. Kap will need to step into the pocket and he doesn’t have a history of doing that well either. I will give him a bit of a pass on that because he has always had to deal with a lot of pressure in the pros as a result of running Roman’s Sardine Can schemes and last years horrendous O-line.

    • Nipper says:

Lets hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Niners may not win this one but lets hope they compete well if a victory doesn’t materialize.

  19. Berger says:

I don’t think this year’s QB class is very good. I haven’t seen a QB worth a 1st round pick. Maybe the guy from Washington. I haven’t even checked if he is draft eligible. USC has a converted LB at QB named Darnold. He might be the prize in 2018. The guy from Clemson is a McNabb, the guy from Miami is a sloth, the guy from Northern Women got pulled today and the guy from Louisville is not a 1st rounder. Is there a stud OLB pass rusher available?

BTW, Cal has a decent QB for the pros but good enough for rd 1? And is he even draft eligible. Sorry for the lack of research, I’m just reporting what I have seen.

  20. Winder says:

Well then maybe we can get one in rd 2 or 3. All I know is we gotta try.

  21. Nipper says:

Dear Lord: Get us a QB. Niners need an offense. Amen.

  22. Irish Kevin says:

Here we go into the next “will there be a passing game greater than 10 yards down the field”

  23. Irish Kevin says:

I am shocked 😱😱😱😱😱 we ran the ball on the first play

  24. Flavor says:

So Kaep can miss guys open down field just as bad as Gabby. Check.

  25. Irish Kevin says:

And there it is, can’t completely a pass greater than 10 yards!! So you miss on the pass and go straight back to the run!!! Stupid, stupid, stupid!! 😡😡😡😡😡

  26. Irish Kevin says:

Please just run the ball 🏀 on first down, so I don’t have to be disappointed in the passing game!

  27. Irish Kevin says:

So you are basically given a TD and you walk away with a field goal.

  28. Irish Kevin says:

Is anyone watching the game besides me? 😳😳😳

  29. Irish Kevin says:

If there had been a defender on TSmith that would have been an incomplete pass, it was so badly under thrown!!

  30. Winder says:

I don’t think defense is our strength anylonger.

  31. unca_chuck says:

    This defense is unbelievably bad.

  32. unca_chuck says:

Buff is 7 for 5 on 3rd down conversions.

  33. Irish Kevin says:

Nice to see you guys get out of bed!! 😂😂😂😂

  34. Irish Kevin says:

Just piss poor tackling!! You can’t even tackle the QB

  35. unca_chuck says:

Bad play calling . Fucking stupid.

  36. unca_chuck says:

Wtf is chip doing? If you are going to take the shot on 4th, go play action on 3rd.

  37. ewisco says:

    sigh.

  38. Irish Kevin says:

Kaep, Gabbert, neither can throw the ball down the field with some touch on the ball! Next up Ponder.

  39. Irish Kevin says:

Down 22, let’s run the ball!!

  40. Irish Kevin says:

No offense, no defense, the Niners have become the Raiders. A new GM is needed, right now!

  41. rtfirefly says:

Meh. I expected a rough game for a 10 AM East Coast start against a very good Bills D. Kappy looked OK, not bad against that D for a guy who hasn’t played in a year.

That D, though. LOL. That’s something to watch, wandering in my mind back 3, 4, 5 years. What a clusterfrill. I’m not sure the easier schedule coming up is going to help.

  42. Nipper says:

We need new leadership from Jed on down to the water person. Move back to Kezar and start over. Niners are truly hopeless.

  43. Winder says:

The flyovers should start pretty soon. It used to be I would be angry as hell after a performance like this but now, not even upset. The ineptness of the whole franchise is showing and this definitely rivals both the Ericson(sp) and the Joe Thomas regimes.

  44. Winder says:

just glad I am not a paying customer.

  45. rtfirefly says:

The turning point was in the 3rd. Down only 4 pts., 3rd and 1 at around the Bills 40 after a very nice run by Kap. Davis dances but forgets to get the 1st down. Chip goes for it on 4th, which I thought at the time it was happening was a very bad move. The Niners had momentum at that point and should have been playing field position. 4th down fail, Bills drive 60 yards for an 11 point lead.

Lots of blame to go around.

  46. rtfirefly says:

Tied for the 30th/31st worst record in the league.

  47. zumiee says:

Tough one for Kap’s first game. Buffalo’s a talented team, playing with a lot of confidence and swagger.

  48. Flavor says:

It’s funny to read the internet and see people are taking + away from today’s game. They got blasted 45-16 with Shady sitting the 4th Q. Hilarious.

  49. Berger says:

Kap had plenty of time to throw and didn’t even complete 50% of his passes.

  50. rtfirefly says:

Guy on the WZ who was at the game said the wind was gusting heavily, playing hell all day. Taylor wasn’t throwing downfield.

  51. Lurker John says:

Evidently, the offensive ineptitude was a red herring, the D, in its current form, is a bloody disaster.

  52. Lurker John says:

The wheels have all but come off. It got so bad I couldn’t watch the game. FOX showed the Niners-Bills as the 10 am game all week. I put it on at 10 and it’s the fucking Rams-Lions, which turned out to be a much better game. It sounds like I was spared some agony.

This whole thing is a nightmare with no chance of waking up.

  53. NJ49er says:

We’re holding solidly onto a Top 5 Pick at this point.
Still not sold on Kelly’s ‘System’ either.
WTF happens in the Locker Room at halftime that equates to doing nothing on Offense in the 2nd half?
It’s gotten to the point that I’ll be mildly surprised when we win.
    Not if.
    We suck.

  54. NJ49er says:

Berger I caught a comment you made recently regarding the QB position too.
    I agree.
There’s no one right now that I’d spend a top Pick on other than DE Myles Garrett at this moment.
Brad Kaaya from Miami might, MIGHT be a good fit for Kelly but, I wouldn’t consider him 1st Pick worthy either.
Gotta think seriously about fixing the interior of this DLine/ILB.
Bowman isn’t getting any younger and, is another rehab away from stepping into retirement himself.

  55. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. Hard to fault the offense when the defensive gives up 500 yards. Truth is the Niners were in it till the 4th. Kappy wasn’t great but he didn’t throw any picks. Which is an improvement. Incremental sure, but he’s rusty himself. Gabbert has had all the snaps in preseason, and every rep, and Kappy did just as well.

The killer is the 3rd down fails repeatedly. 3rd and 20 and they give up a 21 yard run. They were 7-9 at one point on 3rd downs. Horrible. 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 and you fail going up the middle. If you are going to go for it take a shot on 3rd down. Stupid stupid stupid.

Can’t say I’m very impressed with Chip and his play calling. I know the defense is hurt, but 312 yards on the ground? That is fucking awful. Tackling sucked. So, someone tell me that the defense is giving up because Kappy takes a knee.

    • NJ49er says:

Haven’t watched the debacle yet Chuck but…
      Scoring 3pts in the 2nd half? C’mon.
No slight to Kaep either, since he’s been woefully behind the practice curve.
As has been long trumpeted in the Kelly era, he kills his own Defense with all the quick 3 and outs.
Is it scheme? Personnel? Coaching? Beats the sh!t outta me at this point.
As far as I’m concerned, the planes over Levi’s will probably be more entertaining TBH.

  56. unca_chuck says:

ST played bad, the O played bad, the D played horrible. The play calling sucks. The read-option takes too long to develop and everyone reacts to it. Which led to 0-2 yard runs all day. Even then, when the 3rd quarter started, there were drops, missed passes by Kappy, and the obligatory special teams fumble.

By the time the D started slowing down Buff in the 3rd quarter, the offense went to sleep. Chip has proven to get completely wasted in the 2nd halfs of games.

Carr looking terrible today. Raiders have a chance to make a statement at home against a division opponent, and they lay down like dogs.

    • NJ49er says:

The saving grace for me is the DVR.
I can speed-watch and get it over with.
Chip won’t get canned either, simply because of the recent track record The York Conglomerate has amassed.
Baalke will get reassigned if not outright terminated.

    • Nipper says:

Stick them on some busses bound for Las Vegas with the goofy looking owner Mark Davis and good riddance to this bunch of dopes. Davis wants out so send him on a one way ticket out of town.

    • rtfirefly says:

The Raiders lost to the Chiefs at home last year, and beat the Broncos on the road.

The Chargers beat the Broncs today.

It’s one tough dogfight of a division.

  57. Nipper says:

It’s time to look to the skies for the new Levis air squadron plus banners. Next home game the skies will not be friendly. Jed better leave town. Time for a long vacation.

  58. Lurker John says:

NJ, it figures that the year the Niners will have to roll the dice on a QB there’s no decent pick available. A once proud franchise is in a shambles with no way out.

    • NJ49er says:

Lurker John we need a system fit.
Joe and Brady weren’t Top overall Picks either.
It’s all about finding a Coach and QB that can develop together.
I’m not a fan of the Option at this level anyway.
I’m still not sold on Chip ever being successful at the NFL level with his brand of Offense.
Good Coaches can get the best out of willing players.
It takes time for schemes to come together too.
      At this point?
I’m numb to expectations until they show me some progress, especially after halftime.

      • NJ49er says:

I’m perfectly willing to play Defense and run the ball before we can put it all on the QB.
Problem is, we can’t do anything close to either.

  59. Nipper says:

How about some good crying sound effects from someone. That would be a nice touch to this thread.

  60. NJ49er says:

Hey Jed – Jim Tomsula on Line 1 –

  61. Nipper says:

Cute babies……..nice conclusion to this busted day.

  62. Nipper says:

Poor Jed must be in the fetal position sucking on his thumb waiting for his mother to call with advice. Sniff…….BOO HOO!

  63. Flavor says:

Matt Maiocco ‏@MaioccoCSN 5m5 minutes ago
Lowest @PFF grades on #49ers offense: Zane Beadles, Colin Kaepernick, Daniel Kilgore, Mike Davis. Only positive grade: Quinton Patton.

  64. Berger says:

I don’t think Kap did any better than Gabbert, maybe worse. I thought if Kap got time to throw he would do a much better job. Instead he didn’t even complete half his throws. The wind didn’t bother the Bills QB, just ours. At least he didn’t look as bad as Eric Reid. What is going on with that guy, he has played well for a while. He’s up for a big contract this off season and he doesn’t look worth it right now.

  65. unca_chuck says:

He hasn’t played for a while. Come on, Bergs, he’s playing to get out of here.

  66. Nipper says:

Time to move on. The QB doesn’t play D. The Niners problems are upstairs. They just don’t have a clue about putting a team together. It’s a skill an organization must have. Are the coaches at fault? Perhaps but when you’re this bad the fault usually lies elsewhere. Trent will have to walk the plank and the sharks are circling beneath. Chomp!

  67. unca_chuck says:

    New thread is up.

  68. 12th man says:

A tale of two halves again. 5 games in a row the Niners have had a decent first half and a disastrous second half. That is coaching, no question. I have to believe O’Neil is about to be fired. His D scheme is ok at the back end but horrible in the front 7. The same players are prepared with scripted plays and designed D first half and there is no counter punch for the other teams adaptions.
Kap, despite the stats, did play better than Gabbert. They were competitive in the first half despite some poor throws, at least the Bills D had to respect the deeper ball.
