Well, the quarterback fight that hasn’t happened, still isn’t happening. Unless you think the pillow fight between Gabby Gabbertson and Jesus Wonder has legs. The word out of Camp Whispering York is that Colin Kaepernick has been cleared to practice as of now, and will play in the Green Bay game next Thursday.
I’d love to think that this is merely what it is. A small setback for Kaepernick as he readies for the upcoming season. Whether as starter or short-term backup. It seems like it anyway. Chip Kelly is saying as much. However, the undercurrent to all this is the underhanded gyrations of this front office. Namely whether the possibility exists that the 49ers IR him for the year to let him fester on the sidelines, a la RG III last year. The other possibility is that Kappy doesn’t bother trying, and sits anyway while he bides his time to get out of this 7th grade front office.
Frankly I don’t buy either scenario. For all the heat that Kappy catches, he’s not nearly the headache that RG III-and-out was in Washington. Kappy had a lot more success than him, and is bigger/stronger besides. But, be that as it may, Kaepernick’s only real option is to play the hand he’s got. And that’s to fight for the starting job here.
We’ve all gone back and forth over what has transpired, but the truth remains, the team bailed on him by abandoning the players they said they would keep if Kappy signed a team-friendly deal. They then blamed a poor season on him after little Jimmy H pouted his way to his dream job, half the roster bailed (with Trent Baalke holding the door wide open), and Jimmy T Farts-a-lot, and his merry band of monkeys led the team to a last place offense and defense. With and without Kappy.
My hope is that at least for now, there is a sense of hope with Kaepernick and this new coaching staff. Provided that CK can win the starting job. If not by week one, at least a couple weeks into the season. If Chip has any sense, he will position this team to rally around the much-maligned quarterback and at least play with some excitement. Harbaugh certainly knew how to suck the life out of any room, absorb all the fun and turn it into a glowering uncomfortable pissing match, while his antecedent merely tried to clear the room by crop-dusting his pressers with air biscuits.

The playpen is in full idiot mode. Hmmm. Buwwitt thinks trades are the draft. He keeps touting the fact that Walsh said teams should ‘strongly consider’ drafting a QB every year. What’s even funnier is Walsh didn’t follow his own mantra. Unless you consider 9th-12th round fliers as real hopes to find a backup. In the Walsh years, and this is a blanket from 1979 to 2003 mind you, they drafted 3 serious guys.

Yeah, Walsh made trades for QBs. Hmmm. But in the gang the can’t shoot straight’s world, signing Steve Young, a guy with 3 years experience as a pro with drafting Dorian (Gray) Hagan. Or Bono, a guy with 4 years pro experience with Brandon Doman, yet another draft pick with 0 snaps. And even those traded guys were no great shakes.
God, the stupidity comes off of him in waves. From Guy Benjamin to Matt Cavanaugh to Mike Moroski to Steve Young to Steve Bono to Jeff Garcia, Walsh traded for, or signed as free agents, his QBs. The biggest disappointment to me was drafting Drunkenfucker over Jake Plummer.
Sure, Walsh looked in the draft. But there’s a huge difference between drafting in the first 3 rounds as opposed to late round fliers like John Paye, his injured Stanford alumnus. If Walsh was really serious about drafting QBs all the time, he would have drafted them higher. Simple.
Walsh was not part of the Druckenmiller draft. He was clearly in want of Plummer.
Yeah there were a few years that Walsh wasn’t officially part of the team, but he was talked to about it i’m sure. I remember Walsh clearly wanted Plummer, but the powers that be, namely Carmen Policy and Dwight Clark, wanted to veer away from Bill’s ideas and picked Drunkenfucker.
This was around the time that Clark stated that football has ‘passed Bill up.”
Duh.
Lets hope Chip can make sense of the current situation. If Kap is the guy go with him. If not keep looking for someone else. The guys in the know feel Gabbert is going to be the guy unless Kap comes on late with a strong performance.
Well, the bar to pass Gabby is pretty fucking low right now. We’ll see after tomorrow if it gets any higher. Interested (a little) to see Ponder.
Eli Harold had better show he can hold the point and get some pressure on the QB because Tank did exactly that vs the Texans.

Just seeing the coaching staff actually move guys around (like AD to RG, and Tank to OLB) makes me think these guys might just have a clue. Even fricking Miller to TE.

I am anxious to see our O-line tonight. What looked like our biggest weakness last year looked like our biggest strength last week. Also, our D-line was doing well allowing our DBs to make some plays.
The two players I am most critical about are Harold and Lemoneir. Harold didn’t do anything to impress but he didn’t get burned either. His problem is Tank messed up one play and then dominated. Lemoneir actually did a nice job last week. His problem is he wasn’t being blocked on most plays. Can’t get less respect than that.
One receiver who caught my eye was Dres Anderson. Actually, Simpson looked decent too. Let’s see if they show up tonight.
berger – there are some players that are flat out confusing. I’ve watched Simpson from the beginning and the kid has so much talent. He’s been stuck on teams that don’t throw the ball much or very well. The problem is we don’t have the QB for him at the moment either.
I really wanted Goff. Give him a year or two and the stinkin Rams are gonna be a force.
That’s been said about the Rams for years. I’ll believe it when I see it. And Goff may or may not be good. The regular season is a whole different animal and many don’t believe Goff was #1 quality. We shall see.
I’ve been sucked into this state of mind more times than I can remember, but I have to say that I feel pretty good about where the Niners are headed. They have a lot of young talent, unheralded you talent, and I think they’re being overlooked.
The OL, in particular, could well go from shit to very good in a short period of time. With AD (at guard?) and Kilgore back, Trent Brown coming on and with a high ceiling, fucking Pears out and Garnett on board, I don’t know how one could think otherwise. Just adding vets Kilgore and Ad should be a huge upgrade. Both are accomplished offensive lineman. something that was sorely lacking last year.
They looked pretty good offensively last week, even though it’s preseason. Mike Davis looks like a new back, Hyde’s back healthy and hungry, again with a vastly improved line to run behind. QB is the usual question mark, but figures to improve with time under Kelly’s system. Wideout is again shaky. Tim Ryan was talking up Patton again last week, but I’m of the opinion it may be time to move on from him. He hasn’t really done shit since he’s been in the league. D’Andrew White? Burbridge? Smelter? Dres Anderson? Unproven quantities, but with potential. Ellington? Who fucking knows. He gets quite a bit of hype and so far I’m not sure why. He doesn’t return kicks for shit.
Defensively, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m excited about it. The D-line has the potential to be dominant eventually. Armstead is having a huge camp, Buckner is a beast that just needs experience, Jimmy Ward is on the verge of a breakout season, after two years of being slammed as a crappy draft pick. He showed serious flashes at the end of last season and is ready to go.
Bow is back and healthier, the secondary has young guys who could be good, Redmond
Anyway, the team should at least be much more entertaining to watch. And let’s beat the fucking Seahawks this goddamn year.

Chuck, I remember Yepremian, one of the great, early so-called soccer-style kickers. What I remember most, though, is that Keystone Kops pass he attempted in Super Bowl VII. LOL

Goff had a great year at Cal. I remember turning two of his games on to watch him. It was the two games he stunk it up. It was hard for me to get behind him after watching twice.
Twice disappointed is twice forewarned.
Goff is no sure thing. He didn’t win very many games against tough teams, but Cal has been defensively challenged recently.
Lurker, I’m in the same boat. I think this team has a shot to be very good on defense. Offense is predicated on Kappy. I think we are 6-10 with Gabby, and possibly 9-7 (best case) with Kappy.
I said at the time, both lines looked vastly improved last week.
I also don’t think the Rams will be very good this year.
