Draft grade so far? C.
We drafted the bookend DE to Aric Armstead in DeForest (Bones) Kelly, uh, Buckner, and traded up to get the only position we filled in free agency, namely Left Guard. Color me baffled. Most draft boards had Cody Whitehair as the no 1 guard in the draft. And he was scheduled as a 2nd rounder. Joshua Garnett, the Stanfoo product was the Outland winner, and such, but was slotted as a low-2nd/high 3rd round pick. Yes, we need a pass rush, yes we need bodies on the line, but Buckner is more an interior run-stuffing guy, and we already signed a guard a few weeks ago. Come to think of it, we didn’t stop the run well either, so there’s that. I just hope he provides more immediate impact than his Duck buddy Armstead did.
The guard thing though confuses the shit out of me, though. I ALWAYS get the sense Trent is drafting in a bubble of his own creation. Like saying he had AJ Jenkins name in an envelope 30 days before we drafted him smacks of arrogance and intractability. This was another pick that was about 1-2 slots too high for a guy that ended up being a complete bust. Even beyond the fact he was a washout, what does it say about Baalke that he doesn’t even pay attention to what happened leading up to his pick at 30 that year? Trading up for a 2-3 guy in the 1st is the same kind of thing. Like he knows something that no one else does. Like he’s outsmarting people by doing this. Well, all he is doing is outsmarting himself. KC is happy as hell with their haul of our 2nd, 4th, and 6th round picks. Att to jump 10 spots for a guy that would have been there.
That being said, I LIKE that he drafted line help. I just don’t understand why the trade for a guy that would have been there 10 picks later. Mainly because he’s burning whatever flimsy bridge there was between Anthony Davis and the 49ers. AD is a tool for doing what he did last year, but Baalke is the tool this year for acting the innocent party and floating trade rumors. As it is, we still need a right tackle.
Today’s proceedings get a little less fun what with the trade out, but hey, See you in the 3rd round.

I did not do any homework this year so I can’t comment much on the quality of our picks but I sure like the position needs we filled. I’m hoping for a big run stuffing NT next.
I’m also hoping we get the QB Hogan from Stanford in a later round. He has a long throwing motion but he’s probably the highest football IQ QB in the draft.
We need to get a QB that has potential. I usually like the Stanford QB’s and maybe he would be smart enough to read defenses.

Boom or bust pick. 6′-2″, long arms and runs a 4.3. Can’t say I am excited about the pick but 4.3 can be worth a try.
Maybe we can use one of the CB picks as a NT!

Baalkes pix reflect total rebuild mode. No skill position players. Another season of merde offense. Raiduhs look like they could win their Div, Niners look destined for a 5-6 win fun time again…
I really thought a QB was in the works. I think we squandered this draft after rd 1. But we did get bodies for our lines and we needed them. Maybe Chip sees something no one else does. I got high hopes for Smelter and maybe Davis gets in gear this year. At least we didn’t draft a shitload of TE,s
Rashers Robinson sounds like more than just a risk to me. He’s talented and an excellent cover guy by the analysis’ I’ve read. He’s tall and rangy. Weakness may be against the run. He could be a steal. Nothing flashy so far and not addressing wideout is curious, but the lines on both sides of the ball have been addressed and that was a glaring need. You can never have too much depth at the line positions, imo. Buckner is a straight stud and grades out highly from all legitimate sources. He’s going to step right in and contribute.
A lot of Baalke bashing going on here, but some good prospects are coming on board, guys the coaches can work with. Baalke is bash-able and I’ve done plenty myself, but this draft looks pretty good to me. As always, time will tell.

ANALYSIS
Strengths
Thickly muscled, well-proportioned frame. Shows some looseness of hips and above average athleticism for the interior. Excellent quickness off the snap into the neutral zone and laterally when called on. Quickness and pad level creates leverage advantages in the gaps. Disruptive against the run and makes impact stuffs. Possesses powerful hands and functional punch. Decent pass rush with room to improve. Has play strength to challenge the edge of a guard. Experience playing up and down the line. Tough guy with desired motor.
Weaknesses
Showed some inconsistency in withstanding down blocks from power players. Has power to 2-gap, but double teams might be too much for him. Can become more efficient with his hands. Has habit of laying on blocks a tick too long against the run rather than anticipating and shedding early. One note pass rusher relying on athleticism and brute force to try and win early. Needs to implement pass rush plan and develop a counter.

Well IMHO Nile Lawrence stample might be a good UDFA
The MO here seems to be, re-tooling the OLine to fit Chip’s vision.
All things considered, I think they did a good job at filling out the weakest areas.
Secondary has considerably more competition coming, along with the OLine.
Can’t knock the selections until they put some work in,
It’s a passing League.
Protect the QB/Sack the QB.
Nothing wrong with that IMO.
Now, let’s see if Chip makes a play for QB Vernon Adams on the UDFA Mkt.
He’s already somewhat familiar with the Chip System.
Given the uncertainty associated with the guys landing on your slot in the Draft process, I think Baalke made some good decisions about filling needs.
Time will tell of course.

Grade = Solid B+ / A- if they get some pass rush production early from Blair this year.
You think Blair will have a bigger impact than Buckner in the pass rush NJ?
No 12th, my point would be more like what we got from Lynch.

Buckner is likely to be the guy inside early on, clogging the middle.

I wanted Billings. Adding him to our two firsts would have been something. The rest of our picks were swing for the fences picks. Either they’ll be all that or misses.

He was projected in 4-6 and can lift 800 lbs they say.
I remember Larry Allen was considered the strongest guy in the NFL and he could lift 700 lb, now this kid lifts 800 lb…wow.

I’d have to agree. He was misused and was too timid playing for the Niners until his final 1.5 years, and even then was too risk averse IMO. I still don’t think he has what it takes to win the big one, but he has had a good second half of his career.

Unlikely they carry four QB’s so who is the odd man out? Trading Kap or they guy they brought over from the Eagles, who is so well known his name escapes me.
Based on the free agency period, and the draft, I’d say Baalke ain’t going anywhere next year. Everything he has done so far this off season is long term. Nothing sexy or flashy. Confident guy or has assurances from above?
Possibly true, This draft has to pan out to some degree and we will have to at least look like a pro team this year for him to stay. His overall drafts have not been good and it shows.
