No other way to put it. This team’s immediate future is in the hands of one Trent Baalke. A guy who has pissed away a loaded roster, and backfilled it with dogshit. Sure, he doesn’t stand alone on the pile of garbage that has become the stink by the Bay. Young Sir Tweetsalot played his part in alienating the previous head coach, and then hiring a fall guy to take his place, further driving guys out. But still and all, the GM is in charge of getting the talent here. Through the draft, and through free agency. And the occasional trade.
We all are familiar with Baalke’s draft record. And we all saw the tremendous haul we got with our cap money. Zane (Meet the) Beadles, and a backup QB who’s name slips my mind. Oh yeah, Huey Lewis. The News isn’t good however.
Anyhow, based on how these last few drafts have gone, I have no idea what Trent has in store for us today in the 1st round. We are in desperate need of O line help, CB help, ILB help, and WR help. Funny thing is, I wrote this exact same fucking thing last year. Trent did NOTHING to address the needs of the team last year, and we paid for it dearly with a crappy line, an inconsistent defense, and a punter we wasted a 5th round draft pick on who turned out to be a vanilla-flavored turd.
Today? No clue. With us out of the QB sweepstakes, and no QBs of note on the horizon for next year’s draft, my hope is that we build up the O line. Namely an OT. Someone to bookend Joe Staley. Fortunately, it looks like we’ll be able to get Ronnie Stanley. The Staley/Stanley show. Laremy Tunsil, the top tackle in the draft, won’t get by Ozzie Newsome and the Ravens. Vernon Hargreaves is also on my radar as a CB who could very well slide right in to the line up.
Unfortunately, there’s an injured guy who looked to be a top pick until recent knee issues popped up. Yes, the undersized part-time RB and feisty ILB Myles Jack. Leave it to Baalke to draft a guy who’s undersized, hurt, and on a gimpy peg. We are thin at ILB, but still, I’ll give up the team if he drafts Jack . . .

It’s one pick and he was Pac-12 defensive player of the year. He’s also supposed to be an NFL-ready run-stopper and with the potential to be a good pass rusher. And to be fair, Armstead showed some pretty good talent last year. I’m not ready to bag him yet.
Let the draft develop before bashing Baalke. Lots of good OL come in the 2nd round and later

I’m reading some pretty good stuff about Buckner, comparisons to Calais Campbell, loads of talent and a powerful physique. NFL.com says he has a chance to become a dominant force.
Based on what, John? I ain’t raining on any parades. I mean I hope Buckner’s gonna plug the middle, but this team had no offense last year. Baalke hasn’t drafted any offensive players worth a dime. Hyde being the exception if he could stay on the field. None of his linemen have panned out, and Smelter is another knee-problem-special. Impact players like Ellington, Patton, VMcD, LMJ, and AJJ, are nothing special if not awful. Granted they weren’t used correctly, but who has left and done well? Delanie Walker and Ginn are the only guys I can recall, so it isn’t as if these guys are diamonds in the rough just waiting for a shot somewhere else.
Looks like we are not trading Kappy to Denver. They are trading up with Seattle to get Cook, presumably.
What else? His play in college. Player of the year in a top flight conference surely means something to you, doesn’t it? And like I said below, the line on both sides of the ball had to be addressed. The pass rush was anemic last year. I agree with your assessment about the players you mentioned, but Buckner is not viewed as a project by anybody. He’s a stud.
I think every Niner fan is down with what the offense was like last year and in Harbaugh’s final year. As of right now, I’m confident Kelly is going to get things moving in the right direction offensively, which means a guy like Ellington can’t be written of just yet. He’s been in a shit situation since he was drafted.

Most new head coaches like to make some kind of QB splash. Wonder if Cook would be a trade possibility for us. Wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen. Although this sure wouldn’t be Baalke’s style to go all in on a QB. Kappy wasn’t his guy.
I guess the Jets still remain a possible trade partner with Ryan Fitzryan holding out.

After all the shit that’s gone on with the Niners the past 2-3 years, there’s no way in hell they were going to draft a guy who puts out a photo of himself with a gas-mask bong strapped on his face. That would’ve been the death knell for Baalke. I see they also passed on Jack, probably because of the lingering knee questions. Maybe he’s learned his lesson as far as drafting injured players is concerned. I’m not saying that it’s not a viable strategy, but it hasn’t produced a lot of results in the past few years.
Both sides of the ball have to be addressed, so I’m cool with Buckner to kick things off. He’s a legitimate top 10 guy who’ll probably play right away. AD is back and still young. I think Trent Brown is going to be the sleeper from last year’s draft and I’m confident Baalke will add more OL candidates as the draft progresses. He’d have to be an idiot not to. A case can be made that he is an idiot, but I think this is a good start to the 2016 draft.

The question is why? Garnett wasn’t projected till the late 2nd round. Most folks had him as the 2nd best guard in a weak draft for guards.
