Game Day! The End is Nigh

Well, the season that started with a bang ends with barely a whimper. A team that beat the playoff-bound Minnesota Vikings fairly easily quickly went into a tailspin that they couldn’t get out of. 1-0 to 4-12. Injuries, inconsistency, bad coaching, bad play, terrible offense, terrible defense, a quarterback benching, on and on.

A season that started with a ton of question marks and uncertainty after the mass exodus of players, and the gutting of a coaching staff ends with likely another purging of coaches at the least. The team that was terrible offensively last year sunk even lower. The team took a huge hit in talent on defense, and it showed in a number of blowouts, but that was due to the many turds the offense laid. Sort of a self-generating shit show of 3-and-outs followed by quick scores by the opponents.

The finger of blame can be pointed at just about anyone on the team and in the front office, but to me the biggest problem with this team is that the talent that was abundant 3 short years ago has gotten old, moved on, and has not been replaced. The galling thing to me is that Trent Baalke is under NO pressure from the local media regarding his status as the GM, and his problems replenishing the team with playmakers.

Sure, Jimmy Bag-of-Doughnuts is an easy target to pigeon-hole as the source of the team’s woes (anyone who farts in a presser WILL catch shit), but he was given a very bad hand to start with. The machinations around the coaching hires started with Adam Gase nearly being signed only to (apparently) flee the ship after Jed York mandated that Tomsula, not Vic Fangio, be the DC.  This scenario supposedly played out, but I can’t for the life of me figure out WHY Tomsula plays such a huge role on this team. It should have been a no-brainer to get Gase and keep the defensive coaching staff together. Beyond that, Tomsula is no offensive genius, and the rest of his coaching staff did little to alleviate the worries around the moribund offense.

Rightfully so it turned out, as they are the worst offense in the league. The thing is, there are rumblings that Jed won’t even get rid of Tomsula, let alone his GM. This team was riddled with injuries last year, and managed to crawl to 8-8. This year saw another shitload of injuries, but with the talent drain, they staggered to 4-12. Keeping Tomsula and shit-canning Chryst and the rest does little to change the prevailing suck. Status quo will likely bring about a mediocre season, even if they don’t get ravaged by injuries. I know Jed likes to float things around through social media using his underlings to get the lay of the land from the fan base, but he HAS to know that there will be black-outs and sponsor defections in the near future should this same coaching staff/front office returns next season.

Sigh.

BOO HOO. Lets all pass some gas. Tomsula wasn’t the problem. He’s the scapegoat.

  2. Winder's avatar Winder says:

    Turds was the correct description.

All around the League……Let the firings begin………..

  4. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Heck with this roster the late Vince Lombardi would lose and lose frequently.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Right. Lots of weird games. Hoping Cleve would win but they are throwing caution to the wind.

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Like clockwork. 3rd and 13. 8 yard pass.

  7. zumiee's avatar zumiee says:

Hard to even call it a train wreck season. Train wrecks leave a memory at least.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Miller gets shoved by a Ram and gets penalized for it. Got to love the refs. Every fucking penalty should be reviewed after watching the hundreds of shitty calls this season.

  9. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Faithful I am here, as usual the Niners of fence does not know where the 1st down marker is and throw a 3 yard pass

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

3rd and 6. 1 yard pass. Love it.

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    How empty is it, Kevin?

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Get the 1st down. And an illegal procedure. Another bullshit call. Plenty of tackles line up a step off the line.

  13. Winder's avatar Winder says:

    That was nice

  14. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

About the same as the last game 2 weeks ago. About 50% full

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Wow. Nice hit there by Reid. Surprised no flag was thrown.

  16. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Brooks hit was dumb. but he got hit twice by Rams.

    We’re hitting today

4 reasaons I want the Niners to lose.

Steph Curry is here, just showed him on the score board

  20. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

It would be fitting for this train wreck of a Niner squad to come back and win this meaningless game so they could worsen their draft position…

  21. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Well, they don’t play to lose. The players aren’t the problem. Well, they are the lesser problem.

The problem is the drafts under Baalke.

    Hey. A midrange pass.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Players are the problem, meaning their talent level. And, that’s on Baalke. Firing Tomsula and not Baalke will be a joke, if that’s what happens…

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I think a worse fate would be overtime.

  23. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Who the hell is calling plays, don’t they know what a pass is??? This has been the Niners problem for the last 10 years! They get a couple of good runs and then they run only!!

  24. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

How could any GM watch this Niner offense and do anything but draft offensive players in the next draft? This offense is beyond embarrassing. Laughingstock. Ludicrous. Not sure a word is available to describe how inept it is…

  25. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Running the ball, stupidest thing to do when you are trying to win!!

  26. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Great catch, and then what do they do… Go back to the fucking run!!

  27. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

WTF? Your season is over, and you’re punting on the Ram 36 with 4th down and the season near over? Fans that are there rightfully booing Tomsula for punting, and then the punt goes into the end zone, a net 16 yarder. He deserves firing just for that…

  28. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I don’t know that a win will drop us much farther back at this point, But I think we are 4th or 5th if we lose.

  29. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Chuck, your fault — you called for the OT. 😉

  30. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

No one wants to win this game. Goodness what pathetic teams.

  31. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

    Dawson does it!

  32. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

They played to win the game.

  33. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

    There goes jared Goff.

  34. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

    We should land at 7
Goff could be in Cleveland or Dallas by then anyway.

  35. Winder's avatar Winder says:

If Baalke stays we weren’t gonna get him anyway.

  36. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Not a meaningless win. That drops them to 7th in draft position, instead of 4th. Sweet. This organization is so bad it can’t even lose when it needs to. No shot at Goff, and the shot even in 4th was debatable. Now to get him they give picks to move up. This win could have just cost this team a possible franchise QB for a decade. Idiots…

  37. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Is Hodges as good as his numbers would indicate? And it looks and sounds like Jimmie Ward has really started to come around. What’s the take on him moving forward? I don’t get to see enough games to form a complete opinion. I hate to say it, but this win sucks, both for draft position and because it may well be the deciding factor in bringing Tomsula back.

  38. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Since Jed won’t go, fire the entire organization, top to bottom, except Joan in payroll…

  39. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

So, they’re at the 7th pick. Who’re the top QB’s out there? There has to be more than just Goff. Fuckin’ Baalke is going to fuck this draft up again.

  40. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

I’d try to snag QB Carson Wentz in RD2
Get someone to replace Aldon or, Staleys’ successor in RD1

  41. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

    Offensive linemen.

  42. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Radio guys falling over themselves bemoaning Tomsula maybe going. The recent holiday party was way better than last season’s party with Harbaugh. Huh? So what?…

  43. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Wholesale changes are needed no matter the win. This season was a disaster and all the coaches and players must take ownership. Tomsula will have to walk the plank and more to follow. Unfair perhaps, but this is a bottom line business.

  44. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I think Kevin Hogan might be the best QB in the draft because he makes the best decisions. Can probably get him in the 4th 0r 5th rd. He’ll have to clean up his long release but decision making is as important as any quality a QB can have.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Hogan is Gabbert redux. No, no and no…

      • ewisco's avatar ewisco says:

what makes you say that? a propensity to check down? if they do draft a “future” QB, they need to keep BG and let the guy sit and watch and learn. and wait while they get OL help.

  45. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Hogan is not a great talent. The guy is not elite. Why pick a guy who can’t take you to the playoffs…

  46. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Hogan is a backup at best. He’s Gabbert. No thanks. Goff is closer to Aaron Rodgers than Hogan can dream about. Desperate times and all that. Gabbert is a cheap starter for a couple years. Get a. Coaching staff in place that can develop Goff while Gabby plays out his string

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Thank you. Goff and Hogan are on totally separate talent levels. If Goff played for Stanford, they’d have gone the last two seasons without losing, seriously. Put Hogan on the Cal team this past season, they win 2 games…

  47. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Tomsula’s out. Hopefully followed by Baakle

  48. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I really hope they do something about gge front office.

  49. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

The guy can be seen as a tragic figure, but I feel nothing for Tomsula. The guy reportedly undermined Harbaugh, angled for the job during 2014 season. Baalke and Jed had to know hiring Tomsula was a desperate move, hiring a guy that most would say had no business being an HC. He’s got a deal worth $10 million, and he gets paid, so no tears for the Hedgehog. Now, if Baalke gets the axe, we’re back in business…

  50. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Baalke’s not getting the axe. They already cobbled together the scapegoat for this trainwreck and they fired his ass today. Jed’s afraid of his own shadow right now, he’s not ditching Baalke too. I really want to hear him answer to this shit hire though. EVERYONE thought this was a bad move and he just kept blathering about holding him accountable and Super Bowls being the only measuring stick.

  51. zumiee's avatar zumiee says:

Pretty cold not waiting until tomorrow to fire Tomsula.

  52. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

The biggest thing that Jed has to answer for is how the Adam Gase deal went sour. He was all but hired before the deal went away because Jed’s insistence on Jimmy bag-of-donuts replacing Fangio.

This makes no sense on any level.

  53. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

I don’t understand how Baalke has become Jed’s Rasputin. What is it that he brings to the table? It’s not drafting excellence. Ass kissing par excellence? If that’s all it is, that’s pretty bogus…

  54. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

As bad as it seemed I think the defense is in much better shape than the offense/ We almost have to go QB in the 1st round. If Goff is off the board, we need to get a guy in the 2nd round.

There is Carson Wentz from N Dakota St. 6’5, 230. Good arm, pro style offense, good decision maker. Level of competition isn’t BCS, but give him a couple years on the bench and take your chances.

  55. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Niners have to trade up to #1 and get Goff. If not, Cleveland will take him and the kid will be ruined in 3 years…

  56. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I don’t get it either re Baalke. I wasn’t too down on him til this year’s draft and his absolute disregard for our glaring needs. But I just don’t get him passing on SO many WRs these past few seasons. Keenan Allen was a pisser.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Don’t get me started on Keenan Allen. I basically begged the Niners to draft him. No. Baalke takes stone fingers Vance McDonald in round 2 instead. Oy…

  57. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

There are other QBs out there, Snarkk but Goff looks like the real deal.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Somehow I’m thinking Belichick ends up with Goff. He studies under Brady for 3 years, then, the Pats have another 15 years of giving beat downs to the dogmeat trio of Jets, Bills and Dolphins…

  58. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

If Jed fired the entire organization and started over, I’d be fine with signing Ryan Leaf as a FA 3d string backup out of Striped Suit U. Just get somebody in there that can run a team, and choose some offensive talent to produce on the field…

  59. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

This Tomsula firing is the tip of a giant iceberg of ineptiness. That’s the worst part of the Niners this season just being plain pathetic. Poor draft picks and not enough young talent was not the HC’s fault.

  60. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Skeebs has declared Chuck, Berger, Nipper and 12th as persona non grata. He looks kindly on Winder whom he labels as a “cross blogger.” Congrats to Winder.
