Hiding Behind the Shield

What’s interesting in the fallout of Tom Brady’s overturned suspension, Jolly Roger seems to have had his legs cut out from under him. Throw in the Bounty-gate overturning, and the absolute bungling of the Ray Rice/Greg Hardy suspensions overturnings and reinstatements, players these days are immune to misdeeds. Barring convictions. Seeing as most of these guys can lawyer up pretty hard, and can therefore put things off til the season is over, they are pretty much able to live abouve the law and hide behind the shield.

I’m sure this isn’t was Goodie Goodell intended by being a hard-ass not interested in due process, but now the players use that very tactic to put off legal proceedings.

Aldon Smith is the latest example of a guy who has burned bridges and broken laws at every turn, and yet gets a make-good deal with the Raiders. And we all know that if he was a scrub, he’d be working at Home Depot stocking shelves. But hey, I don’t begrudge the guy a damn thing. Get what you can get while you can. There’s no law against accepting a job offer.

My point is some should make a stand regarding this. Tiring, sure to point this out again, but the league and the owners don’t care that some of their players are habitual criminals. Domestic abusers, child abusers, drunk drivers, and drug-fueled steroid freaks. All is fine as long as the collective perception jives with the reality that no one really cares what these guys do. Except for the victims of their misdeeds, of course.

So who makes the stand? Well, in the Niners case recently, Jim Harbaugh hid behind the very due process keeping these guys on the field. Of course he gave Seattle and the Ravens shit for the steroid problems and the Ray Rice deal, but he sure wimped out when the chickens came home to roost in the form of Aldon Smith and Ray McDonald. He ate teo big helpings of crow over that shit.

Course it took 3 strikes to force the Nienrs hand with both RayMac and Aldon. Now they can at least try to get in front of another situation by benching Ahmad Brooks. The team? Hiding behind the shield. Same with Sir Jed Tweetsalot. Seeing as Harbs wimped out, maybe Jim Tomsula will be the one to make a stand.

Not playing Brooks? You may as well expect Dennis to become stone sober and warm cuddly.

    From ESPN:

“According to the Santa Clara district attorney’s office, Aldon Smith was charged with three misdemeanors Friday: DUI with a prior conviction and refusal to submit a chemical test, hit and run with property damage and vandalism with damage under $400. He is set to be arraigned Oct. 6. The maximum penalty is two years and six months in county jail if he is convicted of all three charges.

Smith practiced with the team Friday, wearing No. 99. Despite his off-the-field issues, Smith will be eligible to play Sunday, which the Raiders will consider depending on his conditioning, league sources tell Schefter. Smith could be subject to severe NFL discipline in the future, pending the judicial outcome of his latest incident.

The expectation around the NFL is that Smith will be suspended again at some point this season, but he is eligible to play until a suspension is announced.”

This will get pled down to something more manageable. 2016 may be a lost year for him. Can’t imagine that they’ll go lighter than the 9 games he got for an earlier violation. Shit, he’ll STILL only be 27 should he lose the season next year.

    Moving on.
Steelers didn’t exactly look invincible last night. The Niners have a shot at them. Who knows, they could be 2-0 and if they are I feel strongly that the foundation that Harbaugh laid will be the reason…

  4. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

I should have known that Bullet and Bakkentom are one and the same. How did I miss that?

  5. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Jay Cutler, Bullet and Bakken’s favorite NFL QB, 1-11 lifetime against The Pack, including the NFC Championship Game for all but Cutler, who was getting some bike riding in.
How come BullTom never mention that when they’re dissing Kappy and lauding Cutlets? Could it be Kappy’s 2-0 record against The Pack in the playoffs?

  6. Winder's avatar Winder says:

rt- bakken is a 49er troll. Bullit would rather see the 49ers fail just so he can say he was right all along. That’s whats at skeebs blog nowadays.

    • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Writing styles are identical, they post at the same time, they both diss Kap at the same time and in the same way, and Bullet is an infamous Alex lover. Hmmm…

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Plus, Bullet’s already been busted for posting under other names with the intention of deception, good ol’ Touchdown Tommy coming most readily to mind. I’ve never posted under any other name, so to me right there his credibility is shot.

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

I included “with the intention of deception” because posting under another name by itself is nothing. You used to be sidewinder, but you weren’t trying to fool anybody. Reno’s changed his name, again same as you. Spitty changes his name every time he gets banned, but he isn’t trying to fool anybody either. Changing to impersonate a non-existent person is a whole different and very messed up world.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

rt- maybe you are right, I dunno, it’s way out of my league.

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

It just gets annoying, Winder, when Bullet (or others, but especially Bullet) uses that to try to somehow justify his slanted viewpoint. Or to try to hide that he’s posting the same crap non-stop.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Tedious is how I see it.

      • Berger's avatar Berger says:

I went by Berger on SFGate but got banned for telling Del that Mindy Bach was fuckable. I had to change my name to Renoberger. So the two names isn’t for deception, it is out of necessity.

Bullit (sic) also used Dirtdiver on SFGate. He says he doesn’t use other names but since he has been caught lying many times before, he isn’t believable. He recently put one of my sentences in quotes and changed a word that changed the entire meaning. He is a genuine lying piece of shit.

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

That was my point, Reno. Winder and you changed names for perfectly innocent reasons.

  7. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Skeebers runs an asylum not a blog. Some of those guys must be sucking their thumbs and in a fetal position when not posting on his blog.

  8. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

    Vernon Davis on last season:
Last season was tight end Vernon Davis’ worst in the NFL. This offseason, he discussed what went wrong.

“Whenever I’d run, like, my deep over routes, there was a safety sitting over there already,” Davis said, per Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. “It was just game-planning. And nothing really every opened up. But I was really ever a factor in the offense last year. … The first game, yeah. But the second game, the tight ends (weren’t) really involved as a whole.”

In other words, he felt like an afterthought.

    Horses mouth.

    • Berger's avatar Berger says:

Bullit (sic), Dirtdiver, Touchdown Tommy, just shit his pants over that quote. What do you mean Harbaugh couldn’t figure out how to get him open.

  9. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

    More from Davis:

On Thursday afternoon, I asked him if he feels more involved in the offense this year. “Yes,” he said as he sighed and laughed. “Big smile on my face.”

But why does he feel more involved?

“Practice, man,” Davis said. “Everything for me is happening in practice. I’ve probably caught more balls than I’ve ever caught here in my 10 years of practice.”

  10. Berger's avatar Berger says:

Numbers people only understand numbers. They only spot trends when the numbers bore them out. It is so easy to see Harbaugh was about to be mutinied. There is no possible way a numbers person could pick that unless Harbaugh had another year for the numbers to prove it.

    • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

He’s a numbers person until he’s not a numbers person. The # of Super Bowls Kap has been in vs. Alex, the # of NFCCGs Kap has been in vs. Alex, their age Kap vs. Alex, # of years since taking over as starter, Kap vs. Alex, career team record Kap vs. Alex, career QBR Kap vs. Alex, those numbers he conveniently ignores.

It’s just amazing how that works.

      • Berger's avatar Berger says:

The most laughable line of the year last year was Skeebers saying something to the effect that Alex would have been shredding teams. I say with what, Harbaugh’s college offense.

      • The most laughable line of four years ago, and arguably the most laughable line of all time, was Chuck saying we were better off with Alex Smith > Peyton Manning.

That still busts my fucking gut with rip-roaring stitches to this very moment.
Alex Smith under center for our San Francisco Forty Niners is a better option than Peyton Manning likewise…

  11. Option A:
    Owner: 12th Man
    GM: Berger
    HC: Chuck
    OC: Nipper
    QB: Alex Smith

    Option B:
    Owner: Chuck
    GM: 12th man
    HC: Nipper
    OC: Berger
    QB: Alex Smith

    Option C:
    Owner: Berger
    GM: Chuck
    HC: 12th Man
    OC: Nipper
    QB: Alex Smith

    Option D:
    Owner: Nipper
    GM: 12th Man
    HC: Berger
    OC: Chuck
    QB: Alex Smith

    Option E:
    Owner: Nipper/Berger/12th Man/chuck
    GM: Nipper/Berger/12th Man/Chuck
    HC: Nipper/Berger/12th Man/Chuck
    OC: Nipper/Berger/12th Man/Chuck
    QB: Andrew Luck

The obvious answer is option E:

I could take you four mooks and dig a ditch and cover you with lye and find a former owner, GM, HC and OC to come out of retirement and I’d still have Andrew Luck as my QB. You’d still have Alex Smith.

    I win. You lose.

RT, you nailed it. I thought bakken was spitty but stopped giving a fuck after he left. He posted here for 2 days and immediately ran to skeebs blog. Since I had already deleted Skabies hemorrhoid from my blog roll , the jump was not intuitive at all.

    Ergo, busted again!

    Hyuk!

    • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Fuuny thing is, I LIKE Spitty since he sobered up. I hated his guts before. I understand why Reno wants nothing to do with him, I wouldn’t either in his shoes. I think it’s too bad you won’t let him back, although he’s sounded a lot more Dennis-end-of-the-world-esque this year.

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Oh Dennis, go fuck yourself. Go fuck a duck. You can’t sit in a fucking chair and not get hurt so don’t say anything about anything. Jesus, just shut up and fuck off. what happened to you? You used to be funny, now you are a humorless dick.

    • Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Perhaps he’s wearing Depends. Life is a bitch.

      • I know I can be an asshole, at times, on these blogs. but you ask anyone who knows me and they’d tell ya Dennis would give ya the shirt off his back and the last dollar to his name if you needed it.

Seriously. WTF am I going to do with more money? Until the first guy who comes back from the dead and tells us we were wrong this entire time…”You *can* take it with you.” My plan is to piss away every last goddamn red-cent to my name while I’m still here.

If I get hit by a bus tomorrow? Mission accomplished.

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I didn’t minds spitty until he forced me to shut him down. He was hell -bent (and he good and goddamn well knows it) on getting banned and I did what he wanted. Simple as that.

The Alson Smith signing is yet another case of the NFL turning a deaf ear to what the greater public thinks about football players and the perception that they live above the law.

They need to help him with his blatantly obvious alcoholism. If, and it’s a big if, he can get a grip on it, he can still make the HOF. Favre was a bigtime opiate addict, and that’s as bad as alcohol in addiction terms.

    • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

That’s why I’m willing to give Johhny Football another chance, BTW. All early indications are that he’s doing everything right. In the one Browns game I saw this preseason, he really looked like a franchise QBOTF. Whether Aldon’s willing and smart enough to go through all that is an entirely different story.

My 2nd favorite team this year is the Colts because Frank Gore and Andrew Luck are there. Unfortunately they have Chuck Pagano. It is no secret he is on the hot seat. That is a good thing, he should be.

RT, I don’t believe Balking Tom and Bullit (sic) are the same. I’m not guaranteeing that. The way Bullit (sic) lies you never know for sure. He definitely lies more than any person I have ever blogged with.

  21. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I believe the NFL should not discipline off field issues. It is a league that was formed to play football. It was not formed to teach America morals. If a player gets in trouble with the law and can’t play he should not be paid. If he can play he should and be paid. All the NFL is doing is opening itself up to be targets for special interest groups. I say play football and let the courts adjudicate. On field issues are different. Fines for late hits and deflating football are on field issues. BYW, IMO Brady was fined and suspended for not cooperating more than anything else.

I would not have cut Aldon Smith, I would have let him go through the process and get put in jail if that is what happens. If I had to guarantee his contract for the entire year for being on the team for opening day I might have cut him. I would not want to pay a player 9 million for being in jail. I don’t know what those circumstances were but money aside, I would not have cut Smith.

What is going on at Texa$$? Mack Strong has changed OCs after one game and according to Reece Davis on ESPN radio, the alumni are starting to call for his head if he doesn’t step up his recruiting. Texa$$ is probably the most money hungry of all schools. They just hired this coach one year ago. Relax.

  24. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

The greater threat to the NFL long term is not discipline and criminality in the ranks, but demographics. I heard on the radio the other day that pee wee and youth football rosters are way way down. It’s the concussion thing. As more info comes out, and it will, this is the real danger to the future of the NFL — fewer bodies will be playing football at all levels to supply the player pipeline…

  29. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

Berger with regard to Aldon being released.
I can’t help but go back to the situation with Leonard Little and the Rams many years ago.
Granted, Aldon hasn’t killed anyone. Yet.
For a talented guy that is fighting demons in his personal life, it only seems a matter of time before he self-destructs.
His resumé of poor judgement events was hard to ignore

I believe Baalke made several attempts to protect him from himself.
There appeared to be a good faith effort, on both sides, to keep him in the fold as well.
Whatever took place to create the separation is unfortunate.
IMO, if Baalke had quit on him, a trade attempt may have been made a year ago, when his value was much more obvious.

I’m also of the opinion that Brady’s successful challenge to Goodell’s punishment practices weakened any potential influence he might seek against Aldon now as well.
Many of us thought Aldon’s 9 game suspension last year was excessive and, may have created the thought that he’d get hit even harder after the recent transgressions.
Now, Goodell may be inclined to take an about face on potential punishment?

We’ll see what comes soon enough.
Aldon is on a 1yr deal so, if there’s anything left in terms of a relationship in SF, he could be available as a FA next year.
Assuming he cleans up his life between now and then.

    • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

NJ, the CBA is pretty clear on drug/alcohol issues. I doubt Aldon will have a case, even with Goodie weakened.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

        I don’t disagree RT.
Just that the timing of Aldon’s signing seemed a bit odd, in relationship to Brady’s successful appeal.

Sure, there’s a good chance Oakland won’t have his services, if/when the CBA portion of this topic is determined.
Calculated risk on Oakland’s part I’m sure.

Another guy I put in the same conversation is Donté Stallworth.
He managed to turn a DUI vehicular death into a misdemeanor of sorts by writing a check.
Some of these guys are out of control yet, they skirt serious punishment, by virtue of being NFL athletes, with lots of protection available to them in the Court of Law.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49er says:

The League has got to be just a little wary of any added appeals too.
Goodell isn’t looking too confident in his decisions regarding punishments in recent years.
His boat is taking on water, so to speak.

      • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

High risk, high reward. If Aldon’s just a punk with or without alcohol, there’s no hope. If not, AND he can stop drinking, he would be well worth the risk. He’s a perennial Pro Bowler or should be.
