The First Day of the Rest of Our Football Lives

Well, the 2015 season is underway. Let’s check in on the doings around the league. One thing I noticed is the Rams have a very fast defense. Foles looked pretty good against a fairly weak Seattle secondary. AZ looked very good on defense as well. Their O? Well, as previously noted, they live and die by Palmer. If they can keep him upright, they are solid. Seattle Looks a little discombobulated. Their O line looks horrible as Wilson got sacked 6 times, and they couldn’t give Lynch enough room to get a 1st on 4th and one to keep their last drive alive. And no, this wasn’t the Super Bowl. This was a different team with a different line. Same outcome though. Hah!

Other than that, Denver looks shakey as Manning looked pretty frail out there. He threw a lot of ducks. Then again so did Flacco. 2 good D’s in a FG fest. Greg Roman had an auspicious debut, scoring 27 points against a VERY soft indy defense. 150 on the ground, and 195 in the air is the usual recipe for Greg. Buff has a stout defense, so Tyrod (Straight Outta Nowhere!) Taylor and Co. look like a legit team at this point. The Bears came up short yet again to the Packers. Maybe GB improved their pass defense. Or maybe it was just Cutler.

The Cowboys reffed their way to an improbable comeback win, Alex and KC beat the Houstons, the Bolts scored 23 2nd half points to blow past Detroit, and in the battle of first 2 draft picks, Marcus Mariota annihilated Jameis Winston as the Titans smoked the Buccos.

Aaaand, stop me if you’ve heard this before, but the Browns and the Raiders were both obliterated to start their seasons. David Carr was hurt trying to stiff-arm a defender (doh!), and McCown was hurt trying to score on a one yard plunge. Instead he fumbled out of the end zone and suffered a concussion. Johnny Football made a nice toss to give Cleve a 7 point lead, but a pick and 2 4th quarter fumbles sealed Cleve’s fate.

The Niners? Well, who knows? I feel we will be able to stop a rusty AP. However, if he gets to the 2nd level consistently we are in trouble. Teddy Bridgewater? He’s an unknown to me. 6-6 as a starter last year, 14 TDs 12 INTs. 224 ypg? Decent numbers for a rook. For us, its all about the O. Move the chains and sustain drives, and we should be good. One thing I noticed this preseason was a LOT of TE drag routes. Love it. As much as we like to use VD deep, teams easily took that away last year and that seemed to clog up the rest of the passing game. Torrey Smith will keep defenses honest (that’s the hope) and the underneath passes to Hyde/VD/Boldin should flourish.

Run blocking looked solid, pass pro not so much. The line was a work-in-progress all preseason. We’ll see the real thing tonight…

Yeah, saw that. Not too concerned about him. He’s good on the edge, but I still don;t get him up the middle on that play,

  2. Lurker John says:

    There ya go Jared!

  3. Lurker John says:

Chuck, the D does look sharp, secondary and line. Acker’s made a couple of nice tackles on runs.

  4. rob says:

    Nice Kap
    Nice aggressive d

  5. unca_chuck says:

These fucking holding penalties are killing us,

  6. unca_chuck says:

Ooooh. Illegal hands to the face! WTF?

  7. Lurker John says:

I was just going to comment on how good they’ve been at getting the plays off, then this. The second half is a bad time to be burning early timeouts.

  8. unca_chuck says:

    Shit. Bad throw there.

  9. unca_chuck says:

Gave the defense a nice long rest there.

  10. Lurker John says:

Jimmie Ward is in the house!

  11. unca_chuck says:

Shit. Didn’t look like his knee, but losing Bowman won’t be good.

  12. unca_chuck says:

We need to get pressure. Blitz. Great to see Bowman back. Apparently he got kicked in the nuts.

  13. dirtnrocksnomo says:

49er cheerleaders look good in black.

  14. Lurker John says:

    how bout a turnover boys

  15. unca_chuck says:

Come on Noonan. Miss… Fuck. He barely got that.

  16. unca_chuck says:

Big 3rd down pickup there. Got to keep this rolling.

  17. Lurker John says:

That’s 8 penalties for 57 yards now. Gotta shore up the holds.

  18. unca_chuck says:

I love it!! Play action on 3rd and 1!!!!

  19. unca_chuck says:

Yes!!! Wonder how Skabies is doing?

  20. Lurker John says:

The goddamn world had better recognize CARLOS HYDE! WhooooHooooo!

  21. rob says:

  22. unca_chuck says:

Yeah it doesn’t matter to get plays off quickly. Tempo doesn’t matter.

  23. unca_chuck says:

Love ya Frank, but there’s a new bellwether in town.

  24. snarkk says:

I wanted to let Gore go two years ago.
Doubt if anybody’s missing him now…

  25. Lurker John says:

200 yds rushing for the team, 136 yds for Hyde. This dude looks like the real deal, like upper echelon real deal. Awesome.

  26. Lurker John says:

Great answering drive by the Niners.

  27. Lurker John says:

    Pinion is booming those kickoffs.

  28. rtfirefly says:

For once I’m glad Dilfer’s on. Kappy looks great. We’ll have to wait for another game and a better defensive opponent to see if he’s truly gotten it. But he looks a million times better than Matt Ryan and Bradford did in Game 1. Whatever BullTom think of him.

  29. unca_chuck says:

Phil refuses to be sad that the Niners won. Sorry. Own it. Don’t be a weasel.

  30. rtfirefly says:

Hey I’ll mail you my address to send me that crow if the Niners look like this all year.

  31. unca_chuck says:

This is only the Vikes, but the defense looks pretty strong.

  32. Lurker John says:

    There’s that TO!

  33. Berger says:

We have rhythm on offense. Something we never had last year. Now if we can just quit shooting ourselves in the feet with penalties. That has to get cleaned up.

  34. Lurker John says:

I’m OK with the FG here, but another TD was right there. So close!

  35. snarkk says:

Offense has better rhythm. Still looks like they’re afraid to throw into the end zone and put the opposition away…

  36. Berger says:

I remember when we drafted Hyde telling everybody that he just took games over at Ohio St.. This game looks like he did in college. The guy has moves but he also runs people over. He always got better as the game went on in college.

    • rtfirefly says:

I said he was going to be a beast often enough and he didn’t that I changed to wait and see. OK, I’ve seen. Now can he last?

  37. rob says:

    She says
The 49ers coach looks just like Paul Barth mall cop

  38. unca_chuck says:

    She’s on a roll.

  39. snarkk says:

So, is Bush out for tonight, or longer?

  40. unca_chuck says:

I sorta miss Bakkenbullitt spitty telling us how Norv Turner was going to carve up this defense.

    Still saying 2-14, Phil?

  41. Berger says:

The 2014 draft is kicking ass!

  42. unca_chuck says:

We really fucked with Bridgewater. The defense looks pretty damn good.

Hmmm. Where did I hear that?

  43. Berger says:

The cancer blog is looking for the gas pipe. They are shitting their pants over this win. Can they back track fast enough to save their precious reputations.

  44. unca_chuck says:

Hey Bullit, what was your prediction?

  45. unca_chuck says:

Just so some of you who are unfamiliar with another Niner blog, here were their predictions for the Niners this year.

    NJ49er: 7-9
    Bakkentom: 3-13
    Grumpy: 5-11
    Winder: 10-6
    Bythorn: 5-10-1
    Phil Fan: 6-10
    Spitblood: 2-14
    RTFirefly: 5-11
    Bullit: 6-9-1
    Skeebers: 6-10
    Rob: 9-7
    Chuck: 11-5

6 months of bitching about how bad the team will be, and well, stories of their demise may be a bit early.

    Way to go, Spitty.

  46. snarkk says:

Defense looks pretty darn good already.
Offense needs to get passing game in gear, running looks great.
Special teams needs work. Give Hayne another shot.
    And stop the friggin penalties.
I guess they can win without Harbs…

    • unca_chuck says:

Dildo was in hyperventilation mode, but Kappy did look uch better with his progressions. We still don;t seem to be able to hit the WRs other than Boldin. Still didn’t run a deep route with Torrey. But Kappy did hit a few tough 3rd down plays and they overcame a 2nd and 20. I don;t think Harbaugh ever did that.

  47. unca_chuck says:

Hey, they may still go 8-8, but I’m gonna milk this for a while. All you stupid motherfuckers at Skabie’s siteshould be eating a huge fucking black crow pie right about now.

  48. Winder says:

What a fucking beautiful thing, we are not pushovers and the place was rockin. Great way to start.

  49. Lurker John says:

Mangini did dial up some good schemes to mess up Bridgewater. That’s one thing Dilfer did right tonight, illustrate what he was doing.

Great first game! There’s room for improvement as with every other team in the league, but a lot of good things happened, the defense looked really solid, Kap was efficient and took care of the ball and Carlos Hyde showed the league that he is a back to be reckoned with. Penalties have to be cleaned up big time, but lots of good stuff to build on moving forward.

    I’m ready for week 2!

  50. snarkk says:

Yeah, I hear ya Chuck, on Bush.
He may not end up contributing much, even if he gets healthy soon.
Just a nice idea to have the guy available for some flat passes and what not…

  51. Berger says:

We did not get out schemed after half time. That was certainly new this year.

  52. snarkk says:

Somebody got it right above. Cheerleaders look good in the new unis.
Players unis look cheezy like the XFL…

  53. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, Snarkk, Bush had one nice play on a swing pass. Hello. A wrinkle that we haven’t used in oh, 9 years.

    • snarkk says:

Nice to have some solid football calls back in the saddle.
I wasn’t sure Kap could even make a swing pass — maybe that session in Ariz with Warner did help…

  54. unca_chuck says:

Irish? Where are you? Musta been rockin’ in there.

  55. Lurker John says:

Those unis look a lot better after a nice win. They can only use them one more time this season, os back to the classics next week.

  56. unca_chuck says:

Lynch was a monster out there.

  57. unca_chuck says:

It’s like a funeral at Skeebies.

  58. Lurker John says:

Hayne can also be utilized if Bush is out for a while. He got some carries tonight and got one 9 yarder. He just needs reps. With him and Davis backing up Hyde, they should be good.

    Did anyone pick up Hunter?

Also, Hayne could be a receiving weapon out of the backfield. He has great hands and good moves. I could see him doing damage in the flat. I believe he will be a factor this year, maybe on offense, maybe on ST, maybe both, but he’s too talented to just disappear.

    • snarkk says:

Agree. The guy misplayed that punt, it hit off his knee. He catches too well to have them sit him for a first mistake. And, he can run over guys, if he doesn’t juke ’em to the turf. Turn the guy loose…

  59. Berger says:

Using the time out to avoid the delay of game was fine. We had rhythm, it was an isolated play, you could see we were gassed and probably needed a breather. We rarely ran the clock so low the defense would know were had to snap the ball on one. I saw an offense that made sense. We do need to get better but unlike last year, it was watchable.

  60. Berger says:

My biggest worry was the O-line. It looked pretty good. Some of the play calling helped but mostly the line performed better than I expected. I hope I’m still talking about the good play calling after next week. Our defense will be going against a high powered offense so our offense will probably need to score a bit more than this week. I think without the penalties this can be a good offense.

  61. rtfirefly says:

The other game with the Pop Warner unis will be home against AZ Nov. 29.

  62. rtfirefly says:

    V is getting creative.

  63. Berger says:

It was revealed before the game by Dilfer that Vernon Davis was going to quit last year but not anymore. He is enjoying football again. How many more statements like this do we have to hear to know that players had lost their zest for the game under Jim Harbaugh.

  64. Berger says:

As stated on the PFT power poll, “Who’s got it better than us!”

  65. Berger says:

I’ve got a t-shirt that I never wore. It was given to me. It reads “Sons of Harbaugh”. It’s not the type of shirt I would wear but I guess I will keep it for the novelty.
