Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Shield.

TE Xavier Grimble
CB Leon McFadden
LB Nick Moody
DT Kaleb Ramsey
OL Justin Renfrow
DL Marcus Rush
NT Garrison Smith
QB Dylan Thompson
G Andrew Tiller

IR: WR Dres Anderson, TE Busta Anderson, RB Kendall Hunter
Huh. No one of note on the cutdown-list (well Nick Moody is a little surprise) as Kendall Hunter was rolled to the IR, as was WR Dres Anderson. Desmond Bishop and the Niners reached an injury settlement, still and all if this was the direction they decided to go, I would have liked to see Stuka stick around. Oh well.
The big side-story is Ahmad Brooks is cleared to play. By the league AND the team. Yippee. Winning with class. Except when it gets in the way of a player who we need out there.
Another chance to make a stand, but the league and the team deem it frivolous and unworthy. Smoke a joint and feel the wrath. Beat up your GF? Well, boys will be boys. Carry on. Here’s to hoping the coach has something to say about this. Frankly I’m sick of these guys getting away with (sometimes literally) murder, and then being cleared to play as if nothing happened.
Jim Harbaugh famously chided his brother for welcoming Ray Rice back with open arms after the initial 2-game suspension for knocking his girlfriend out in a Las Vegas elevator, then hid behind the ‘due process’ mantra when it came to RayMac and his domestic abuse charge. He didn’t even bother to bench Aldon Smith hours after his DUI. It’s easy to lay blame at the feet of others, as Harbaugh did with the Seahawks and their steroid issues, but when the chickens came home to roost, he took the weasel way out.
My hope is Jim Tomsula benches Brooks for the game as no one else on the team or in the league gives a shit about the issue at hand. Well, let’s all wear pink for the fallen wives out there. I bet Rae Carruth is laughing in jail.
It sure is hot today. I’m staying away from these hot button issues. I just want FOOTBALL!
Apparently there are people out there who don’t understand the phrase ‘coach’s decision.’ Some really stupid fucking ignorant people. Sure, Brooks may play. But it is pretty much a disgrace. No one out there willing to take a stand at the cost of winning and protecting the shield. The fucking shield that Goodie Goodell is making a mockery of on a daily basis.
People get all-fired pissed off about the jerseys the Niners are wearing, but get caught up in a domestic violence dispute? Ho-hum. Who cares? Wow. Make a stand. I hate the blasck unis, but go ahead and strangle and beat up women. I knew there were a lot of misogynists out there. I guess the mix of football fans crosses over pretty hard.
Is it only because I have raised two daughters that this infuriates me? If this happened to one of them, I’d be hard-pressed not to go Ellie Nester on their ass. Does anyone out there even think twice about the message this sends to the fans, not to mention the world at large? Apparently not, as this shit is daily news and Goodell consistently hides behind his due process mantra, and even then does little to stem the tide of violence.
Throw in the tons of money Goodell has tossed around to quash negative reports regarding concussions and the toll that football takes on its players. Along with Goodell’s hypocrisy regarding player safety, and you have what? Well, likely you have nothing. This juggernaut rolls on until more women are murdered, more players go on drunken rampages, and more players kill themselves after a career of getting knocked around.
Give it another 10 years and you will see hundreds of lawsuits around injuries and after-effects of playing the game.
That is possibly true chuck, and I have a daughter too. I just don’t expect the NFL to be the moralistic PC league. If someone commits a crime they should be held accountable. Let due process take it’s course. This world is so full of corrupt bullshit that to me the NFL is a place to get away from it. I am so sick of ‘holier than thou’ sports writers saying how offended they are about things when most of em probably take it up the shorts. Oh yeah i forgot “not that there is anything wrong with that.”
Yeah, the NFL is just like society in general in more ways than one. The NFL hierarchy is much like a political machine. The press is in on shit as well. With steroids rampant in football and the league ignoring it, to all the issues around domestic violence, the good ol’ boy network is alive and well.
Don’t know what the tipping point will be, but it will be reached. People WILL stop giving a shit if these ways continue.
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/nfl-power-rankings–some-changes-after-a-crazy-preseason-150053421.html
My takes on these almost-there rankings:
Undderrated- #32 Titans (they’re no world beaters, but Mariota dead last?), #28 Raiders, #26 Browns, #14 Lions (they beat the Cowpatties and made the divisional round IMO, I don’t care what the Jerry Jones party bus riding ref ruled), #12 Eagles
Leaning toward Underrated-#24 Niners (yep that’s me writing that), #16 Vikes (bad for them they’re in the same division as The Pack and the Lions), #15 Rex’s Team
Overrated-#7 Cowpatties (really? With DeMarco, they were only a top 12 team. Without him they’re screwed), #8 Steelers (defense, defense, defense – the Steelers don’t have it anymore, They do have a scary offense, so we’ll see), #9 Dolphins (you’re serious?), #10 Cards (O-line’s gonna get Palmer kilt again, and then what?)
Right on the Money-#31 Dan Snyder’s Post-Naptime Toy
Lol rt, some things never change and to think we have it bad imagine what it would be like to be a skins or browns fan. I have a friend who’s a Browns fan and basically all I can say to him is to try and look at the bright side, whatever that may be.
Tell your Browns friend that the Return To Glory is just right around the corner. 1964 wasn’t too long ago. 🙂
For you Browns fans everywhere:
Lol. thanks for that.
Maiocco says Niners finish 3rd in the div at 8-8.
Beat guys are not as pessimistic as the national guys and the uninformed general public.
Looking forward to live action and Peterson will test that D big time.
If we do t stop AP at the line we’ll be in trouble.
http://www.ninersnation.com/2015/9/8/9279501/trent-dilfer-tweets-about-colin-kaepernick-film-study
Some interesting tweets from Trent Dilfer on Kap’s mechanics and pass plays we can expect. Much too technical for my he’s great/he sucks level of criticism.
Happy looks better than last year. We are running quicker plays.
Where have I heard that before?
Still Nd all it comes down to line play.
Oh good. I can’t wait to see Happy play in the opener. I’m excited to see Happy and what he brings to the table.
BTW CHUCK when did we sign this guy … Happy ?
I looked up Carruth cause Chuck mentioned him. Haven’t thought about him in forever. I don’t read SI very often, too much nonsense, so maybe you guys have read this story but I found it fascinating. I read it twice.

http://nypost.com/2015/04/25/an-exhaustive-ranking-of-every-nfl-teams-draft-haul-since-2010/
RTFIREFLY
If you’re still up for it here’s an unbiased assessment
Looking at sporting news’ GM rankings they seem to agree with you .. and me!
Last (few) years rankings he was top 5 or 6.
This year he got dropped to 16 because
the Harbaugh divorce “shouldn’t have gone that way”
I say he’s still one of the best at selecting players.
On BAALKE
Gee Rob, the only reasoning given for their high ranking of Baalke,s reign was Scotty’s draft, which they labeled the best of the period?
So the 2010 draft you like
That’s the one the article you provided called the best of Baalke’s term and from which it provided its only examples to back its claim.
Everyone misses in the draft. But football is worlds easier than baseball. That being said, it still is hard to project ability. Some guys jump off the page(Odell Beckham frinstance) and some guys slide under the radar. All the due diligence in the world can’t pick a dude like Brady out of the fluff. Remember trading up for JJ Stokes?
It’s autocorrect ROB!!!. Try Typing on a Bart train on a phone and getting everything right
that’s ok CHUCK. I for one, am still HAPPY with your efforts lol
or maybe I’m KAPPY with you efforts. I’ll let you know !!lol!!
ok, cut the Krapp.
You’re the MAN, Chuck. Now to get your buddy Bullit on board! Just kidding……
Good article Rob, think that will satisfy the naysayers….Nah, agenda blinds.
The naysayers are on “the other” blog. They relish that role.
Wow. Not sure how, but this is yet another example of the NFL shortening lives. 27 year old former safety for the NY Giants, Tyler Sash, was found dead in his home yesterday.
http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2015-09-08/tyler-sash-found-dead-iowa-hawkeyes-new-york-giants-cause-of-death
There’s an autopsy scheduled for today. Sash had a previous suspension for Adderall (it was prescribed to him), and a drunken scooter chase that resulted in a drunk-in-public charge.
The Giants reached an injury settlement with Sash after he suffered a concussion in the preseason finale in 2013. Very sad.
Lot’s of people died at 27. And what a shame some of them would have really affected the way things progressed.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4/15-other-musicians-who-died-at-age-27#.ulVPVnPoql
Interesting that Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix were both from Seattle, both were left-handed guitar players, and both of course were extremely influential in their respective eras.
Frankly, getting plays off in a timely manner really is a big deal. Not having to worry about that is something, anyway. With little to show from the passing game in the preseason, the thought is they will do what they did with the backups. And that’s use TEs on drag routes, and give Kappy outlets to throw to. Things necessary to sustain drives. Red zone O is a mystery as of now, but the zone blocking scheme looks like it is doing well for the run game.
11-5? Sounds good to me. Why the fuck not? This isn’t rocket surgery. It’s football. No one expected greatness from Harbaugh his first year. No one is expecting it now, that’s for sure. As I’ve said a thousand times, all they need to do is ramp up the offense to decent levels (12-15) and the defense should be able to do the rest.
And if I’m wrong? Boo hoo. Let the children laugh.
There is no question Harbaugh would have been under .500 this year. Good chance his replacement would have been picking first over all next year. The players did not want to play for him anymore. They were mostly just playing for the money.
I totally agree. 10-6 till the wheels fall off.
I was 10-6 with Aldon. I’m having a tough time picking now. If Brooks plays, 9-7. If Brooks doesn’t play, 7-9. We will get run all over off tackle if we are setting the edge with Lemoneir and Harold. Without Brooks we probably would need to go to a 4-3 alignment.
Im still 10-6 and make the playoffs. Felt better about it with Aldon but I like the O to do better than expected, making the difference.
Baalke was the one making the picks in 2010. He was in the room and McCloughan was not. McCloughan was too busy drinking and getting his ass fired over it. While Trent was staying sober and working on the board Scott was busy drinking and puffing his bloated his face, always looking hung over. Anybody who says that was McCloughan’s draft is a Baalke hater. I am not buying the bullshit I am hearing. Don’t back down Rob, you are the one who is correct. RT is just a Baalke hater.
Lol
BERGER
Anyway yahoo sports also had Baalke as one of the top 5 GM’s in football on their 2014 list.
The consensus opinion on NFL on Sirius radio is pretty much the same. They all hold Baalke in very high regard calling him one of the best .
I guess being drunk and hung over is not winning with class. No wonder the guy had to walk the plank.
Yeah, Reno, I invested, researched, designed, built, tested and produced your Lambogrhini but YOU drove it to 7-11. I guess folks will give you the credit.
*Lamborghini lol
No way to know who did what when back in 2010, but certainly Scotty Scotch was in some kind of pickle. Hater. Such a teenage girl word.
How can he be anything other than a hater. Baalke was in the room, McC had been fired a month or two earlier. It is hard to make picks when you aren’t in the room. It is hard to set the board when you are drunk off your ass or hung over. That was Baalkes’s draft. Period, end of story.
Right. Baalke opened his mouth to read off Scotty’s board. All hail!
I’m at a guarded 9-7.
Last I heard Brooks got the OK from both the team and the league.
Might the accuser here be angling to make some money ?
No shit Rob. According to Unca’s rant, she might be the first woman in history to ever try to pull that caper off.
If RT wants to be a Baalke hater that is his business. I am not going to disparage him for that. He’s allowed to have an opinion but don’t give me any bullshit that draft was Scotts. I don’t buy bullshit.
Baalke went from VP of player personnel to GM before the 2010 draft and made all the picks. He’s been with the team for 10 years
True. Baalke had 31 whole days to exercise his vocal chords to read off Scotty’s board. Good work! Your voice was loud and clear.
My guess is Trent did most of the work while Scott was drinking. Hence, he got fired. Just like Scott’s drunken scout board, a Lamborghini is mostly a useless car. I’m glad I drove my pick up truck to 7-11.
Just wondering why we assume Scotty McDrinkie was the only person doing the picking. Thats like saying Harbaugh did ALL the coaching. What was the largest coaching staff in the NFL doing then?
Its absurd RT, plus, he was long gone on draft day. Don’t know about you but if it was me I would make my own decisions not those of the predecessor unless I agreed with them, in which case it is still my decision.
I sure hope Brooks plays. So he groped a woman who was drunk and being salacious. Big fucking deal. She was probably faking being passed out. I have no sympathy. She chose the life style. If you have a daughter that choses that lifestyle she will get groped. No two ways about it. Get over it.
Based upon our investigation to date, we determined that placing Ahmad Brooks on the Commissioner’s Exempt List was not warranted,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told CSNBayArea.com. “Our review will continue during the legal proceedings and we will examine all available information from the court under the Personal Conduct Policy.”
Based on Goodell’s previous actions, punching a woman in the face warrants 2 games off. Smoking a joint gets you 4 games. Goodell suspended a CONVICTED domestic abuser for 4 games. If that’s your standard, then this is obviously part of the problem.
It ain’t about the league or even the team. They will weasel their way out of this as Harbaugh did last year by crying due process after ripping his bro for welcoming Ray Rice back.
The ONLY guy who can make a stand on this is Tomsula.
Seriously Bergs. She deserved it? Say that was your mom.
My Mom RIP wouldn’t have let herself get picked up at a bar, go home with a football player, and pass out drunk.
The only way it could have been my mom is if they dug her up from the grave. The investigation turns to your mom.
BTW, gold digging is a dangerous past time. She probably did deserve it.
Ray Mac is going to court over it so there’s something to go on. The video apparently omplicates Brooks. Or RayMac threw him under the bus.
Nope. My moms in the ground as well. Figuratively of course.
If the O line jells perhaps seven wins this season. I hope for better but I’m doubtful about the offense. Too many changes too fast. When it comes to football none of us has any morals. We enjoy the game and the people who play it either enjoy the game or are willing to take the risks. Football is too violent to be moral. Man wasn’t built for this game.
Gladiators all.
I like that explanation!
Interesting tid bit from our old friend Kevin Lynch over on the insider
8. Second-round pick Jaquiski Tartt won himself a job as the nickel linebacker. To many it will look like a dime defense with three safeties and three cornerbacks, but Tartt will be at linebacker, where he can blitz and chase down running quarterbacks like Russell Wilson
Tartt compares pretty favorably with Kam Chancellor is Seattle too.
Tartt – 6’1″/221
Chancellor – 6’3″/232
Let’s hope we get similar production from him going forward.
He and LJ McCray look like a nice duo down the road.
Jesus H. fucking Christ. The only thing worse than those who still believe in “God,” is those of you who still believe in the San Francisco Forty Niners.
You people make me fucking sick. Sick to my stomach, that is.
I don’t even know where to begin. So I will keep this very brief. Even more brief than the time it took Ray McDonald and Ahmad Brooks to rape that poor girl at the pool party.
They’re guilty.
You’re guilty.
I’m guilty.
Everyone is fucking guilty. It’s human nature. People suck. People commit crimes.
It’s what we do. That’s why I’ve recently tried to shut off my communication to the “real” world.
Just fucking listen to yourself. Do you hear what you’re saying?
This complete and utter nonsense that’s going back and forth from here and the “other” blog belongs in the DSM-5.
I’ll save Nipper the trouble… The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition
It sounds a little harsh, but don’t fret. The red jello tastes great.
Now onto things not so great…your San Francisco Forty Niners.
Record? I’ve never been too good at predictions. I’m still waiting for those fucking Mayans to make my wish come true and see the world disappear on 12/22/2012. That would have been the best magic trick ever. Fuck & Teller
4-12 and Kap gets benched in favor of Gabbert by Week 6.
My question to you #7 apologists…will you root for Gabbert to get injured so your man can start again?
No. You’ll hide behind the lame excuse that it was best Kap didn’t have to play behind the 49ers’ shaky OL.
Won’t cut it here. That’s total deflection and Alex Smith redo.
STOP making excuses for our sub-par play at the QB position. If you could hear yourself making the excuses for Kaepernick, well, you’d think he was wearing #11.
And I don’t mean Steve Spurrier. Hey, Rob! Now that’s the kinda of COCK you should go find.
The gamecocks ? I love cocks
I’ll go 9-7 on the Niners this year. A bit of a surprise, I’ll predict.
I was ready to go 8-8, but then the Hayne Train/Plane (which is better?) arrived. He’s worth an extra win…
Our Niners are 2 1/2 pt underdogs to Teddy fucking Bridgewater on Monday night.
You’d think we had lost to Joe fucking Flacco in the Super Bowl to be made that kinda dog…opps!
Colin Kaepernick on Monday Night Football is a 2 1/2 pt. dog AT HOME vs Teddy Bridgewater.
Did we draft a 100% Caucasian pocket passing quarterback yet?
Now that a federal judge has basically ruled that Goody and henchmen have ridden roughshod over the CBA, it’s going to be tough for the league to suspend guys for anything short of committing a murder in front of a live remote for the 6 o’clock news…
And no disrespect at all to the film crew back in Virginia that was murdered by that jackass who then killed himself…
Del I was anywhere between 6-10 & 10-6 going in.
Aldon gets released, I figure, there goes the pass rush.
Add Ahmad to the clusterfuk of dysfunction and I’m now thinking Trade him to the first available taker.
We didn’t show much in the Preseason, in terms of a passing game, coupled with a shaky (at best), OLine.
I figure, passing game will take time to develop anyway.
So, we need to run and play D.
Not impressed with anything related to Kaep’s mechanics either.
In terms of a Pocket QB, Gabbert is much more comfortable at that anyway.
He feels the need to find a target, much more quickly, whereas, Kaep feels the need to scoot.
Fine for the here and now but, if he doesn’t learn to ‘feel’ a Pocket, he won’t succeed in this League.
I’ve tempered my optimism to 7-9.
Too many changes, too many questions.
I have no doubt that Gabbert would be the better quarterback of a mediocre team. He’s made for it.
RT I think Gabbert trumps Kaep at just being more mentally aware of the Pocket timing.
Kaep is too used to running IMO.
Given the fact that Gabbert never had a decent OLine in JAX, he seems to make a much quicker read and, he’s got a much better touch throw.
In terms of timing, I give the nod to Gabbert.
Kaep certainly has the deep ball threat going for him.
However, deep balls require time to be patient.
OLine hasn’t shown anything close to Pass Pro yet and, Kaep is too quick to seek a running lane.
See what shows up Monday Night in terms of preparation and timing.
If we’re going to incorporate a quick passing attack, I want to see Kaep make quicker decisions and throw with better touch.
Vikings win the first game despite those new unis……….24-9. The D shows up and the O can’t buy a TD! Kaep runs like a wild man but can’t complete a TD pass to save his soul. Ouch! Damn life is cruel!
What I don’t want to see is Kaep out gaining the RBs.
Be a passer. Use your weapons.
