As disappointed as I am about the Tomsula hire, some prominent players are fully endorsing him. This includes Anquan Boldin, Alex Boone, and notably, Vernon Davis. While there’s something to the whole inmates/asylum thing, and the additional fact that VD is in his contract year and should endear himself to the coaches, there has to be a certain amount of relief from the players. Boldin said it should be easier to play for Tomula over the notoriously high-strung and volatile St. Jim.
Beyond that, the only coach they are keeping is Tom Rathman. Good news as I think at this point it would be a good idea to keep Gore. He’s the heart and soul of this team, and this is a commodity they need to keep this train on the tracks. If Gore showed anything last year, it’s that he can thrive given some decent blocking. Give him a 2 year deal and let him ride off into the sunset. He can go about 15 plays a game and he, Hyde, and Hunter can all share duties.
Boone is onboard as well. Sure, kumbaya doesn’t equal wins, but a looser atmosphere could be what these guys need. Again though a lot rides on the staff Tomsula brings in. He’s been in the league a long time and hopefully has developed relationships with potential staff members. One can hope, anyway.
The guy I like at this point for OC would be Chud, the Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground dweller, Rob Chudzinski. He’s a tight end friendly coach who did wonders with Cam Newton his rookie year. Callahan would be OK I guess. He’s had his moments. Trestman? Ehhhh. He cratered in a big way in Chi-town, and his Canada work? Whoop-dee-fricking-doo.

They do a lot of 4-3 anyway, mainly against passing teams, so this shouldn’t be too too dramatic a shift, but still and all, a bit surprising,
Without a true NT the 4-3 makes more sense. Niners have not had an elite NT under Fangio so he ran a hybrid scheme.
Read the question about where the LB will line up. You have a valid point about Willis is probably best in the middle but since you need 3 where would they put Borland who is a run stuffing machine?

It’s the only way he can get a job, AJ. He’s under contract with us so it would be the height of assholery to hold on to him while others are getting hired.
12th , if they keep Brooks they could use Borland on running downs , and sub out Brooks on passing downs. Or use that spot for Lynch. They had a ton of LBs in their 3-4. This only makes it harder for playing time for these guys. Lynch? Who knows? Bowman and Willis are givens. But between those other 3 there’s going to be down time. That being said, I think Brooks may have sealed his own fate.
My thought is they get Borland and Lynch as familiar with all the LB positions ad they can be so they can rotate to the different spots as needed.
I was assuming Brooks is out. Aldon Smith and Lynch would switch to DE.
Borland showed a lot in his rookie season, including he can be hurt in the passing game so subbing is a possibility as you say.
On base downs I would play Borland in the middle with Bowman and Willis outside though. Willis is versatile enough to play all 3 and so is Bowman but Borland is probably too small and slow on the outside but what he brings to the middle is incredible so far.
Likely to see a lot of nickel as well.

Yeah pretty iffy on Tarver but he beats the hell out of Dennis Allen.
Besides, Tarver was our LB coach for 6 years.

Tough to judge him off that. He fumbled and mumbled through it with cliches and often seemed to be going on a tangent that didn’t have anything to do with answering the questions. Plus, he called all the female questioners “ma’am” which I think was cool back in the 70’s but might not fly these days

And what I meant by “tough to judge him off that” is that I don’t really care how the guy does vs the press. I should have said “there’s no reason to judge him off that.” He’s a simpleton guy, he’s never going to be the orator that some of the high profile coaches are. And I don’t think you have to be brilliant to be a successful head coach. In today’s game you really just need to be a good “team manager.” THe OC and DC are the guys you want who are sharp. What I want out of Tomsula is that he doesn’t let the entire team turn into “Santa Rita Jail West”. Is that too much to ask?
I’ll miss the Harbaugh interviews though. When he got going on something it was brilliant to listen to, even if it didn’t make much sense.
Sorry wasn’t very clear. The “wow” wasn’t for Tomsula, it was for Baalke. Tomsula was about as expected, hardly the polished public figure.
Baalke showed himself to be a bit power hungry though. When asked (paraphrasing) “are these assistant coaching picks Jim’s” he said “They are ours”
In other words Tomsula is not picking his own staff. That’s a bad sign.
GM’s pick talent, coaches coach and that is a good division of labor.
If Baalke wants to choose assistant coaches he should become a head coach.
Media day with the new coach was more blah, blah, blah………I just yelled BLEEPS at my tv and it took it well. Things are good that way.

Since I work in the city now I get to listen to about 15 minutes of Damon Bruce. He lines up a string of like-minded yahoos who parrot his lines. At least that’s all I’ve heard this last month.
He was playing snippets of the presser with JT. Not a pretty sight, but he;s new to the game.
Harbaugh certainly didn’t fall into this like Tomsula. There is not going to be the angst that Harbaugh caused. But Harbaugh got to bring 9n his own guys. This certainly smacks of a situation like Jerry Jones an Dallas where the owner and GM have way too much involvement where they shouldn’t. These guys went out of their way to pretty much make it clear that Tomsula would have little to do with the hiring of his coaching staff. While it certainly fits in with a greenhorn who hasn’t done this before, it fits right in with the plan that Baalke and therefore Jed want too much say in the building of the team.
Will it matter? Maybe not if they find the right guys, But it’s a difficult situation for an experienced coach to want to come in to. Much like the Singletary deal. And we need about 8 of them. I guess you just hope that since there aren’t very many of these jobs, they’ll get good people. .
The thing is, just like Jerry, where do you turn if the owner screws up? Well, we know who Jed will fire. And it won’t be himself.
Yeah Chuck Baalke has put his neck on the chopping block with that performance.

I think he can change the pace of the game, change the speed of the game,” Tomsula said. “…More so than the traditional quarterback, he does it with the lower body. And (we’ll) look at that, corral it and let’s accentuate those things as we continue to strengthen other areas.”
Couldn’t agree more. Take the constraints off Kap and work to his current strengths while working on his weaknesses over time. Kap has extraordinary physical gifts that did him very little good in the pocket this year.
You crater an entire coaching staff that took you to 3 conference champ games in 4 years to hire one Ron Jeremy look alike dude? This looks like an entirely uphill battle that wasn’t necessary. What did Baalke ever do to turn him into Prince Jed’s Rasputin? I could be wrong, but this has 2005-2008 written all over it…
It’s obvious this is a power move. Behind the fancy words and good intentions Baalke wanted to get rid of the Harbaugh coaches and start over. He hired a nice man who would never challenge his authority to make moves. Baalke runs this outfit for better or worse.

As for results on the field I will wait for the games. A unpolished press conference by the Coach didn’t sway me one way or another. Tomsula is a good coach, the question is, is he a good HC?
Time will tell but I’m happy with the initial direction he wants to take Kap.
Well, if you think you have talent in the player pool that’s actually TB’s work. So why axe both the coach and the GM? Makes sense to me that they got rid of Harb’s and kept TB. Harb’s must be a total asshole behind the scenes
I’m a fan of TB flavor, I think he is a superior GM and with the rest of the FO they have handled the cap management part of the business well and garner outstanding talent through a combination of free agency and the draft.
If the HC/GM really did devolve into a power struggle, I have no doubt that Harbaugh had as much to do with it as anyone and I agree, Harbaugh is quite probably a huge asshole and that has been his rep.
That doesn’t mean I have to enjoy every word and decision TB makes. Watching that presser it was obvious Baalke has inserted himself fully in the vacuum created by Harbaugh getting the boot. Judging by appearances only (not wise) it looks like Tomsula is publicly playing second fiddle to Baalke.
In reality Harbaugh was playing second fiddle to Baalke too in that Baalke was his boss, but in public they always created the “partnership” illusion so the coach carries authority.
Yesterday it seemed like Tomsula was granted little public authority, not a good look for a HC in the NFL.
I watched the press conference and generally liked what I saw but I have one big question. Tomsula was definitely not worried about being smooth. He came across nervous but genuine. He gave some answers that sound like he is a good problem solver. Most people see a problem and do something about that issue. Others find out the root of the issue and solve for that so they don’t have to keep solving for the same issue over and over. Tomsula seems to be the latter.
I already knew he likes to run the ball before the press conference so I did not see Baalke taking over the conversation when he said they were going to run. I saw it more as an affirmation as agreeing with his coach. Tomsula’s explanation of what scheme they were going to run was as good of an explanation as I have ever seen. All of that was great. The one thing that is yet to be determined is how well he can take over a group. A head coach needs to able to take control of the situation with a group he leads. Harbaugh might have actually gone overboard in this area. I’m not saying Tomsula will or won’t do a good job in this area but I did not get a sense one way or the other so I am a little worried he might get run over. Everything else was great.
The other thing is if Baalke takes control then this issue might not be a big as it would normally need to be. I think the biggest reason the Giants win in baseball is the teamwork with Sabean and Bochy and his staff. I sometimes wonder how Bochy keeps so much control of his clubhouse when he is such a players manager. Those managers usually get run over after a couple of years. Sabean probably gets involved in player discipline for Bochy? I saw some potential for that kind of chemistry yesterday at the presser. The players sure seem to like him. I just hope they don’t run over him. We’ll see soon enough.
Bochy earns his players respect by being straight with them . He goes a little over board to make the vets happy, but isn’t afraid to bench them as well.
I don’t think Sabean’s has anything to do with disciplining the team. The one thing the Giants have are very clearly marked boundaries. Bochum has full control over who he hires and what he does.
This is where I see problems with this arrangement. Look, it could all work out, but from the outside, you have coaches that won’t want to come in to a situation where the GM and by extension the owner, meddle in things that shouldn’t be on their agenda.
