A Coach, a Coach! My Kingdom for a Coach!!

Well, the waiting remains. I figured by Tuesday we’d have made our move. But no. As the week rolls on, still no head coach to drive the Majic Bus off the cliff to Mediocre-town. Or furthur to Greatness. Whichever the case may be.

As we know the Greg Roman era is officially over as he hooks his wagon to another certified nut-job in Rex (feet-first) Ryan. The blather around the blogospheres is that Roman is getting a bad rap, as this was Harbaugh’s offensive design, and Roman merely ran it. Whatever. Truth be told the offense has been various shades of fair to poor since the Khaki Express rolled into town in 2011. The defense is and was about 3/4ths of the reason for the success of the team. My contention was that Harbaugh should have jettisoned Roman during the 2012 season. His BROTHER did it with Cam Cam, and look at that result. These last 2 seasons were more of the same inept red zone offense, 3rd down conversion rate,  stale plays, and struggles getting plays in.

In lieu of actual news, here’s NFL.com’s latest NFL coaching move tracker, of which I’ve posted the Niner news.

Reported interviews:

Adam Gase, Broncos offensive coordinator
Josh McDaniels, Patriots offensive coordinator
Mike Shanahan, former Broncos andRedskins coach
Teryl Austin, Lions defensive coordinator
Dan Quinn, Seahawks defensive coordinator
Todd Bowles, Cardinals defensive coordinator
Vic Fangio, 49ers defensive coordinator

Potential candidates:
Jim Tomsula, 49ers defensive line coach

Notes: The 49ers have significant interest in McDaniels and Gase as potential quarterback tutors. Gase will have a second interview in the near future, per Rapoport. Tomsula was considered a strong internal candidate but has yet to interview for the job. The Niners will interview Gase on Tuesday for the second time, according to Rapoport.

The buzzards are circling. Todd Bowles has signed on with the New York Jets.

I’d think the hiring starts cranking up soon, but then again, I thought we’d have made our decision by now, The longer this goes on, the more the unwashed masses will get restless.

    • 12th Man says:

      looks like Fox to Chicago

    • NJ49er says:

Why hasn’t Arthur Blank signed anyone yet Chuck?
Worst Division in the NFC? Offense already in place? New stadium on the rise too.
      Something stinks in that process.

I have a feeling there’s too many cooks in the FO, beginning with Pioli and Dimitrov.
For all the rancor surrounding our FO, our Cap and personnel are pretty well managed IMO.

      • NJ49er says:

They could be waiting on McDaniels perhaps?
There’s a definite Pats connection going on in that scenario.

      • 12th Man says:

Teryl Austin getting a second interview with Falcons. Makes sense, Nolan’s D sucked balls this year so a D HC is probably a good decision.

      • NJ49er says:

Yeh 12th, I thought for sure Rex in that venue would have been a great fit.
Strange turns coming almost daily, in this merry-go-round of Coaching changes thus far.

  2. NJ49er says:

I’m figuring LeBeau to AZ now.
If we’re serious about Gase, as reports suggest, it comes down to Gase hanging on in Denver, simply because it’s already his system there, his personnel.

    Peyton is over the hill.
Whether he returns or not, he ain’t long for this game.

  3. Nipper says:

Ah….. the turkey vulture, nature’s garbage collector. One of Chuck’s better pics.

  4. snarkk says:

Don’t know squat about Gase. Other than he’s super young (36), and hasn’t had much experience, even as OC.
I think the track record of really young first time HCs is pretty dismal. Other than Madden, I don’t think any have done well…

    • NJ49er says:

      Exactly Snarkk –
This is shaping up as SF seeking more Offense certainly.
He’s a Martz disciple, worked with us for a short time while Martz was aboard.
Definitely a gamble as a potential 1st time HC.

Adding the new wrinkle, of Fangio threatening to bolt if Shanny isn’t hired, makes this more curious by the day.
Is Fangio suggesting he doesn’t want the HC gig?
Or, he’ll stay if they bring in the Shanny Duo?

      Call me confused…..

  5. 12th Man says:

Del Rio to Raiders. Gase to Niners is done says Denver sports radio host, PFT can’t confirm.

  6. unca_chuck says:

Denver looks pretty squirrelly as well, NJ. Would they really even consider a josh after his last stint? Very curious offseason so far all around. Stl needs defense and barely try for Rex? Or Bowles? Jets and bills need offensive help and take Rex and Bowles?

I’m not too concerned about gase’s age. Gruden did fine as a young coach. Gase just seems like the least fucked up and best fit as of now. Still want Fangio to stay however.

Too much uncertainty. Make the call already. The longer they eait, the more these guys will sign elsewhere.

  7. Nipper says:

Looks like the Niners are bringing in a whole new crew. Jed wants results! Sweep out the Harbaugh stench. Man what did Harbaugh do?

  8. 12th Man says:

Solari will wait to see what happens with the Niners before deciding if he wants to pursue the Bills offer.

  9. unca_chuck says:

That should say ATL needs defensive help. . .

Word is we’re closing in on Gase.

The rest of the chips? Don’t know, but it could get ugly.

  10. unca_chuck says:

Nip, most all the coaching staff is still here and under contract. Unless losing the assistant strength and conditioning coach worries you.

  11. Berger says:

The best gift for a OC a great D-line that creates turnovers so that the offense gets more opportunities to score. Whoever is the head coach, draft a DE/DT in the first round or get a good one in FA.

  12. unca_chuck says:

    Yup. DL or OL.

Shit, I can’t stop fucking with Bullit and Skeebs on that Jim Harbaugh fanzine blog.

  13. unca_chuck says:

From the interwebs re Adam Gase:

According to a story by the New York Times’ Bill Pennington in 2014, Adam Gase has been called a “genius” by John Elway, the Broncos GM and former Super Bowl-winning quarterback. Head coach John Fox – fired this week in Denver – called Gase a “master of innovation.” And Broncos QB Peyton Manning says he’s “the smartest guy I know.”

He’s been praised by former 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci, who gave him his first coaching job in the NFL, and by former NFL offensive wiz Mike Martz, for whom he worked with the 49ers.

  14. unca_chuck says:

They could do a lot worse than Gase. Shanny being the biggest bad-call left.

I just wonder if Denver will make a big push to keep him.

    • Berger says:

Some things about Gase are intriguing. Problem is he is only 36 and has never been a HC. That isn’t necessarily bad but when I think of a leader I usually want somebody a little older. He could be the next genius but can he lead. If we hire him I’ll support him as long as he is supportable.

As much money as I hear Fangio is getting to be a DC I don’t think he would walk for a lateral move unless he got the same or similar money elsewhere. I hear he makes over 2 mil per year. If somebody out there actually knows his salary please let us know.

  15. unca_chuck says:

Fangio now saying he’s “non-commital ” if the Niners sign Gase.

All I can find out about Fangio’s salary is he’s one of the highest paid assistants, and he got a raise when he signed his one-year extension last year.

  16. unca_chuck says:

Shit, If I’m Gase, do i want to coach a noodle-armed AARP rep (or possible unknown scrub/rookie), or a young stub QB with a rocket arm and a very high ceiling? One who is currently learning is doing what he can to improve?

    No brainer to me.

  17. Irish Kevin says:

Denver Radio station saying Gase has agreed to be the Niners head coach

  18. unca_chuck says:

Yup. the big thing now is what Fangio decides. And the rest of the staff. Hopefully they can keep some sort of continuity. I don’t think Gase is going to discharge the entire coaching staff.

His best move would be to let Fangio have total control over the defense (as he did under Harbaugh) and ‘promote’ him to Ass’t. HC or some shit.

  19. Gase didn’t want the fucking job. Nobody did.

“Jim Tomsula was the plan all along. Jim was our first choice.”

Let’s the BS spin from Baalke and Peter Pan begin…

  20. Nipper says:

Okay it’s Tomsula but who runs the offense? Jed York?

  21. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. Well, that sucked. Can’t say anyone outside the building will be happy about this.

  22. unca_chuck says:

    New thread is up.
