Well, the Niners apparently spent 6 hours the other day talking to their DC Vic Fangio in an attempt to understand what he has in mind if he was named head coach. Frankly, I wouldn’t mind seeing Fangio stick around. he has done a very good job with this defense amid a ton of injuries and an ineffective offense on the other side of the ball. Yeah, we’ve beaten that subject into the ground, but here’s what I’m wondering now. If the Niners do decide to go with Fangio (and in my mind, if they are going to hire a defensive coach, they’d go with Fangio since he’s familiar with everyone, and he’s a top defensive coach and they couldn’t get anyone better), who should they get at their OC?
The names that are there are the always-semi-available Rob Chudzinski, He of a ton of teams and jobs, but his work with Cam Newton and the anemic Panther offense back in 2011 was a big turnaround and you’d think he’d fit right in with Colin Kaepernick. Another name that has popped up is Clyde Christensen, he of Fresno City Junior College fame. He’s been in the Colts system as an OC, QB coach, WR Coach, and TE coach for these past 12 years. Some good players have rolled through there, and hes been exposed to some very good offenses.
From the college ranks, you have to wonder if a guy like Tony Franklin in on their radar. He’s Berkeley’s OC, and a guy that has put together very strong passing offenses in Tennessee under Mike Leach, and now here at Cal. No NFL experience however. Another dark horse candidate from the college ranks is Scott Frost, Oregon’s OC. ‘Nuff said there. He worked under Chip Kelly and is still running one of the most high-powered offenses in any sport. No NFL experience as well, but he’s got to be someone who they look at.

To me names really don’t mean that much, we need to find someone that can utilize Kappy’s skill set. We need an OL coach that can teach pass protection. Kappy’s got a rocket arm but I think we move more toward the short passing game. We need to improve on time of possesion, and the hurry-up offense. That will open up the ability to make some plays downfield.
I heard on radio today that Roman is interviewing with the Bucs in Tampa for OC. If he was such a central problem in the Harbs contretemps with Jed/Baalke, then why didn’t Harbs bring him along to Michigan? Anyway, I got no names for OC, leave that to you Chuck. Just get a guy that can get this offense from 30th in pass yds/game (only the Jets and Jags worse) to around 15th to 20th. That would be enough to get back to playoffs with this defense. If I were Fangio, I’d say hire me now as HC or fire my ass so I can look elsewhere. They couldn’t do better than Fangio as a defensive HC. He’s a fiery SOB, and he actually talks to the media. I don’t see a downside on him as HC as long as they get an OC in there that actually can get Kap to get a snap off with about 4 or 5 seconds left on the play clock. Simplify the damn offense so he has one play call, then can audible off to something that will work because he actually has time left on the clock to scan and react to the defensive set…
I’ll throw out a couple of names that come to mind. In Dallas Bill Callahan is the OC and run game coordinator. Scott Linehan is the play caller and passing game coordinator. I would take either. Feel out the Philly situation. There some turmoil there, see if Pat Schurmer is available. he did a great job with Bradford his rookie season. I’m sure Fangio has some names he’s already thrown out. I posted an idea on the last thread and I’ll give it one more go.
Fangio or Tomsula as HC. The other or Rex Ryan as DC. For OC see where Mike Shannahan’s head is at. He has plenty of money, see if he wants to come here and be part of some winning again. If not Shanny, try Callahan or Linehan. Who knows, it’s fun to guess!
i don’t see fangio working for tomsula. but getting tomsula some time at dc with fangio hc might be a good idea. that would set him up for a future hc spot. looking at the names being tossed out i think an oc could be had. there sure are a lot of openings though, with all the same retreads being mentioned. it will be interesting to see how the chips fall.

Hey, Wisco! Yeah, that’s been my thought all along. My first take when Harbaugh left was to put Fangio in as HC and promote Tomsula as DC. Still think that is the way to go. They need new blood on offense, not defense. I’d keep Solari and Rathman and get rid of the other 34 guys Harbs had as offensive assistants.
Rex Ryan aint going to be a DC anywhere. He’s a head coach or talking head. I have no idea where Devon Smith, the Ohio St WR looks to go but he had a great game the other night. Created separation early and stayed open. Great hands. Used his body well to maintain separation.
Sad new from ESPN. Stuart Scott, long-time ESPN sportscaster, passed away this morning after a long battle with cancer. Boo-yah and cool as the other side of the pillow (describing Joe Montana werw among his catchphrases.
Sad to hear of his passing and hope he RIP. While he was alive he used to irritate the crap out of me. Don’t really know why.
Sad news. I liked to watch Stuart Scott.
I think Phil Simms is as good an announcer as there is. While so many are trying to be the next Madden, Simms just goes slow and explains insights from a former QBs perspective. He is better at saying the most with the least amount of words than almost all announcers. He also tells it like it is. When a QB misses a throw he’ll point out a bad route where a former lineman will just say it was a bad throw.

I sure hope Harbaugh and Roman finally remove their collective heads from their asses and call a good game. And so help me Christ if Harbaugh loses another challenge today I’m gonna lose it. Just 3 for his last 14 when throwing the red flag. WTF is he doing on the sideline anyway. Makes me wonder if he’s even watching the goddamn game. Challenge results like those won’t help Harbaugh any when he asks Jed for a raise.
