The Harbaugh Dilemma

I’m sure you are all as thrilled as I am over the machinations that are occurring behind the scenes of the San Francisco 49ers front office as they wrestle with the idea of giving Jim Harbaugh a contract extension. Gladly for the sake of the team, the players, and the fans, they decided, amicably, to postpone contract extension talks til after this season.

The thing is, Harbaugh will immediately get the lame-duck designation after this season, depending on how things work out. The team could be at a very very important juncture in their desire to reach the promised land if this team falls short of its goal to win Super Bowl 49.

Harbaugh is currently on his original 5 year contract. One that is set to expire after the 2015 season. Due to his wildly successful start as a head coach here, the flag was raised by Jimbo after 2 season to ask for an extension. Things cooled a bit when they lost the Super Bowl, and then lost in the NFCCG last year. It got to the point of a nonsensical yet partially valid trade offer from the Cleveland Browns that was maybe taken semi-seriously  by the team.

Harbaugh certainly has ruffled the feathers of those in the front office. In what ways, us on the outside don’t really know, short of his professions to want to keep certain guys that fall out of favor with the front office, or his maniacal sense of importance to the team.

Certainly, Harbaugh has done an outstanding job as head coach, no one is denying that, but what happens going forward? This is really Jimbo’s contract push. Getting so close so fast has really put him in a shitty position. He set the bar to ‘impossibly high’ in two short years. All the front office has to do is point at the trophy case and say, in their best Judge Smails voice ”Well? We’re waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiting!”

Yes, Bill Walsh turned around a much shittier team in three years. Yes, Walsh is an impossibly high standard to live up to, but Jim put himself in this position, and seems to be driving wedges between he and the front office by hammering this contract thing. He’s backed off, but if he doesn’t win the Super Bowl this year, and say the offense looks a bit ragged, what should the team do?

  • Would you give Jim Harbaugh $10 mill a year for not winning it all?
  • Would you lame-duck his ass and say win or take your khakis elsewhere?
  • Would you say ~$8 mill, take it or leave it?

If we don’t win it all, I’m going with #3.

I can’t believe some of you ninnies worrying about a pre-season game. Harbs could care less about it. And you should care even less than that. Totally cool you went Chuck, IrishKev looked like he was close to you (in the pics you both posted on The Book)

Yeah, we met up and hung out for a little bit. Great to meet Kevin and his family. I was just happy to get out of the sun. His seats are great.

      Seriously Flavor –
I’m with you. Stay healthy and get your work in.
This isn’t gonna impact anything other than stamina and film review.
      Win the games that count.

I was happy to see Kaep using his check-downs and spreading the ball around, short span that it was.

Chuck I seem to think that both the missed TD to Bling and the TD pass thrown on Dontae Johnson seemed to be sun related?
Both guys looked like they didn’t pick up the flight of the ball very quickly?

I watched a good portion of the game on my phone, not exactly clear to me if that was the case or not?
I will rewatch at home and try to get a better perspective.

No,they blew the coverage way before the sun could have gotten in their eyes.

      • NJ49er says:

Is sun an issue in that direction Chuck?
As I said, very hard to determine from a phone screen.

Lloyd looked as if he just didn’t react and lay out for that initial attempt.
The DB covering him looked lost too.

All things considered, the stadium looks fantastic.

I hope Chuck BLEEPED someone even a beer vendor. Free Parking? Damn you’re good. You must know someone useful.

What did we learn from yesterday? I think we learned a lot.

1.) Like Del said – we don’t have a backup who can win us games. Blaine Gabbert looked like shit. How much of that is a new system, nobody knows. I watched Gabbert in Jacksonville and he looked better then than he does now. Today he stands in the pocket well but has radar lock and is inaccurate. Josh Johnson didn’t exactly seize the opportunity but it’s gotta be a little deflating to go out there with the 3’s. It’s probable Johnson gets work with the 2’s against the Chargers. Let’s hope.

2.) Bowman’s replacement stinks. Whether it’s Borland, Wilhoite or Moody there will be significant drop-off while Bowman is rehabbing, and that could be all year.

3.) If anything, the fact that was our first home game in the new stadium and Harbaugh did absolutely nothing to win only underscores how little Harbaugh cares about preseason wins.
We all knew it. This only underscores it.

4.) Ken Acker looks like a keeper. Dontae Johnson does not. At least that’s my new bias.

The biggest issue with this team I see is the 1’s not getting any work together. Sure, Justin Smith doesn’t need much work before the first game by himself, but this team has significant turnover and it’s great to say, “He’ll be back by week one,” but in most cases the guy coming back week one, missing the preseason, will have a new guy next to him or a new guy in his unit he needs to learn to work with. But hell, like I wrote before, week one is Dallas. They’re a minor league team.

Hope a lot of the starters get significant time week 3.

So we got shut out and a guy died at the stadium opener? If we were fishing I’d be ecstatic. I think it’s all a good omen of great things to come!

No shit. It was hotter than any game I’ve seen at the Stick, that’s for sure.

    New thread it up, BTW.
