A.J. Who??? Draft Day Two!!!

The 49ers, as with last year’s #1 pick, selected a guy that was under the radar for the general public but was highly thought of by actual NFL GMs. AJ Jenkins, from Illinios, racked up 1,271 yards and 8 touchdowns last year, all the while sneaking up the depth charts of many war room denizens. The Rams had worked him out and had placed him nearly on the same level as Justin Blackmon. The Niners went to one of his workouts and obviously liked what they saw. Some insiders had him as a early to mid 2nd rounder due to his 4.38 40 time, excellent hands, and his route-running. Sure, he’s not the prototypical 49er WR (think JJ Stokes. Well, don’t. Think Dwight Clark) who is big and sure-handed. He’s more of a speed burner DeSean Jackson type who can stretch the field. My take is he’s definitely Randy Moss insurance. But lining up both those guys outside will hopefully give defenses fits. Crabs may find himself behind Manningham as the slot guy. Guys like Kyle Williams and Ted Ginn appear to be buried on the depth chart at WR. KW likely is odd man out since Ginn is the KR guy (and let it be known Ginn was injured playing WR, not returning a kick). Unless Harbaugh is leaning toward more 3-4 wide reciever sets, and a more wode-open offense, there may be some bitching among the pass-catchers. Which means ol’ Randy becomes cranky. We’ll see how that goes.

KW was supposed to be what they drafted AJ for. A speedly guy who can create mismatches, draw safeties to him, get open with his speed, and open up shit underneath for Crabs. For whatever reason, KW just never got enough separation, and was not very good at finding open areas to catch balls. The Niners went a little overboard to address their non-production at WR, but better too much than too little. Crabs had a good enough year, but disappeared in the playoffs. Whether due to the fact that everyone knew he was the only WR worth a damn, or he just wan’t getting open himself, the team needed to upgrade the WR spot seriously. Morgan’s injury, Edwards’ slowness coming back from his many injuries, and Ted Ginn’s inability to be a genuine WR led to  these decisions to get Moss, Manningham, and AJ. UIt’s weird that a guy who can field punts in the tricky Stick winds, can’t catch passes.

Baalke had AJ pegged a while ago as the guy he really wanted, and he played the quiet game well. Other teams were definitely scouting the dude. The guy is an academic all-American, has huge hands, and is tough to boot.

One down 6 to go. At this point, I think the Niners get RB Turbin in the 2nd round. Fleenere is likely out of the mix. Don’t be surprised to see a 5th to 7th pick for WR though.

In case you missed these from the previous thread, here’s an article about sleepers in the draft. AJ among them:

Here’s ESPN’s Mike Sando talking about the Rams interest in AJ Jenkins. They had him rated pretty highly:

Yeah, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at Dennis’s house when the Niners chose JRice out of Miss. You went ballistic didn’t you Dennis?? come on admitt it.Not only Rice but I would have loved to have heard your comments on the Skinny little Kid from Notre Dame the Niners drafted for a QB.
According to the SacBee, AJ has some huge hands 9 7/8 inches. So yeah, there is no telling how good this kid is till the games begin. He did look good in College so we shall see.

  3. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

This is from Branch on the Chron
Outlook: The 49ers could address their right-guard position, their only unsettled starting spot. … Guards Cordy Glenn (Georgia) and Amini Silatolu (Midwestern State) are still available. … San Francisco also might select a cornerback.

  4. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

And if these guys are sooo much better than Jenkins, why are they still on the board??

When the 49ers made the pick, Stanford tight end Coby Fleener and wideouts Rueben Randle (LSU) and Stephen Hill (Georgia Tech) were available. Those players, unlike Jenkins, were viewed as potential first-round picks, but are still available entering Friday’s second round.

    This was in Branch’s article

  5. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Experts or so called in the media are a hoot. Mostly they fall hard off the high wire.

  6. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Brent Jonesy on KNBR would like to see the Niners move up and get Fleener. So will Fleener go quickly now in the 2nd Round?? Always tough to know where projected 1st rounders go once they drop down to the 2nd round. I would hate to see them give something away to trade up.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Well, I think they’ll pass on Fleener now. Especially if Silatolu is there. I could see them trading up for him. It looks as if Harbaugh may be moving toward a more wide-open offense. If he wanted to run his 3-4 TE jumbo formations that he did so much of in college, then Fleener WOULD have been the pick. But why go hard and heavy after Manningham, Moss, and Jenkins? We still have Crabs, and unless he’s used as trade bait down the line, the Niners all of a sudden have too many WRs. KWs gone. Ginn is strictly a KR and emergency WR. Crabs could be forced to backup status if the Niners run their usual 2-3 WR sets.

I’m sure they’ll mix and match a lot, but this pick leads me to think they have more up their sleeve. Either a trade or a different approach to offense. Maybe Harbaugh thinks Smith can now handle a higher powered offense? Curiouser and curiouser. . .

I have a splitting headache. Not because I’m upset over drafting A.J. Jenkins, but Vernon Davis’ younger brother just hit me over the head with a hammer. I’m sure we’ll draft that murder suspect in a few years.

  10. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I ran into a fellow Niner fan on my way to the pharmacy today…he was wearing a Hearst red #20 jersey, I in my Niner t-shirt and jacket. We got to talking about that fateful playoff game in Atlanta where Garrison broke his ankle that for all intents and purposes ended his career. His injury really changed the complexion of that game. I know it happened on our first series, first play? Whatever, his ankle injury hurt in every sense of the word. We ended up rushing for < 50 yds. Terry Kirby did little. We became pretty much one-dimensional.

I dunno. Maybe the Falcons were destined to make the SB that year. We did use up quite a bit of luck the prior week on that T.O. TD to beat the Pack.

  11. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Fleener reunited with Luck in Indy. That will be interesting to say the least.
Best of luck to the former Cardinal stars.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Not much of a shock there. That should be fun. That team needs a youth injection.

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Never mind. They got Quick. And they are rebuilding their defense.

  18. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Jeff Fisher did draft Pacman Jones, so Fisher’s been down that road before.
If I was in charge, it would be the road less traveled. There are just certain guys no matter what their skill set would not put on my uniform.

  19. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I have to harp on the Browns draft once again…they took OL (need) but they took the guy from Cal when by most estimations there were at least 4 or 5 better options including Glenn, the Samoan kid and the kid down on the Farm, Martin. That’s strike three for Holmgren.

  20. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I see Silatolu went at 40. Turbin’s the guy for now.

  21. Grumpy Guy's avatar Grumpy Guy says:

Nothing Baalke does would surprise me. Even going WR again if Randle keeps falling. More likely: OL, DL or RB.

  23. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I;m not sure who;s left at RG, so I say Robert Turbin

  25. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Jessie! Well, I got RB right. Wow. Small and fast. This is going to be a different team this year.

  26. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    Different offense I should ssay.

    • phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

Trying to predict the Niners FO with the Baalkebaugh working is pretty tough. Even more so than the O on the field I would say… We are getting Faster on O huh?

  27. phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

RB it is Grumpy. Another fast little guy like Hunter.

Must not be too worried about the G spot (joke) with Person and Kilgore in the wings

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Phil, trust me on this one…you’re gonna love James. As a life-long Cardinal fan, I watch as much Pac-12 football as anyone. I’ve seen James play on numerous occasions. Best way to describe LaMichael James? In a word —Lightning.

  28. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

I Like this pick of James. Another speed burner who likes to run between the tackles. More help and rest for Gore.Hell Kendal Hunter and James not to shabby a tandem. as well.Had his invite to the Heisman party as well.Dude can explode thru the line for big gainers. Great Pick!!!

  29. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

I would think CB next or Guard. But with the Baalke Islands, who can really get a read?

    • phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

New Motto for the 49er fans: “Who’s more confused than US?” NOBODY!

Fine with that. We got the baalkebaugh pulling the strings people.

  30. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

So who’s the odd man out, Dixon or the newly signed Jacobs? No way in hell are they keeping 4 RBs on the active roster.

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

AS Eddie D would yell out “Your Gone Dixon” Hop in your pimped out car and drive to Dixon CA.

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

Well actually Chuck there keeping 5 Backs…Gore,Hunter,Jacobs,James, and FB Miller it,s gonna be a nice mix cause Jacobs can play FB as well with his size .

      • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I already heard talk that they’re thinking about keeping 6 WRs. That’s asinine in its own right. Keep 5 RBs to go along with that? I guess that could work if you tossed two other positions off the roster. If they plan on scoring TDs on every drive they could dump Akers and Lee and never kick again.

      • Grumpy Guy's avatar Grumpy Guy says:

You guys are forgetting Rocky the Special Teamer. BOTH Brandon and Dixon may be out.

      • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Thanks, Grump, I did forget about Cartwright. He makes it a lucky 7, unlucky for 2 perhaps.
        Frank
        Hunter
        James
        Jacobs
        Miller
        Dixon
        Cartwright

If they want to keep all 7, they’ll have to lose both our kickers and our LS Brian Jennings as well.

  31. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Well everyone seems to like this pick, unlike last night where I thought some of you were going to step off a ledge or something.

    • phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

Yeah true Irish. I’m wid you and Nipper: I dunno enough to get upset with any picks but I do know this: we got the baalkebaugh and that’s enuf, right? Anybody more confused than us? NOBODY

As much as I was displeased with last night’s pick, I’m twice as excited about the selection of James tonight. I just always express my true feelings — whatever they may be, straight from the heart. I don’t bitch just for the sake of bitching.

“He makes perfect re-fried beans, but he only needs to fry them once.”

      • phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

So Denny, Harbaugh must be thinking about “Jessie” James: “If ya can’t beat ’em, draft ’em” Huh?

Yeah, we should be listening to Dennis.

  43. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

They are not going to Dump Jacobs. They didn’t pick him up just to look at his SB Ring.He will be the guy to get that 3rd and one tough yard they had problems getting. At 6’4 260 he’s a beast that still has mileage and athelistisim left in the tank.
I put my money on Dixon and Cartwright.Although Cartwright is a good ST player.Plus he’s a Cartwright;they never die in Bonanza. only in real life.

  44. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Dixon’s as good as gone. Depending on what they do at WR applies to RB. Miller, for all the good he did last year, could end up odd man out.

  45. Grumpy Guy's avatar Grumpy Guy says:

Heard Harbaugh stated he could see carrying 4 RBs, 1 FB, AND Cartwright as strictly a ST guy. If so, Jacobs and Dixon are in a cage match for the last spot.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

If Harbaugh said he could “see” that, Jimbo is fucking blind. That’s a total of SIX goddamn RBs on your roster. Nobody. I repeat “NOBODY” carries six RBs on their roster. A coach who does that might as well keep three QBs named Kaepernick, Johnson, Tolzien and a fourth one called Smith while’s he at it.

      Mook.

      • phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

And a cheerful g’morning to you too Denny.

        YES to Dolphins

  46. phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

Dropped down another 6 places. Baalkebaugh got their eyes on somebody under the radar looks like

  47. phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

Twitter via Skeebs sez we traded that one to Miami again for a 6th this year and a 3rd next year.
Baalkebaugh be some kinda trading fools huh?

  48. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I am HATING our Saturday draft. I said if anything I wanted to trade UP, not DOWN with our picks. We need 4 or 5 draft picks who would make the squad and help the team NOW. Not more guys in the later rds who won’t even team. Or worse yet, more pks for next yr when there won’t even be a draft after the Mayans get through with the world this 12.21.

    Mooks.

  49. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I LOVE the Redskins taking Kirk Cousins in the 4th rd. I LOVE that QB from Mich. St. Did you guys see his QB/Camp/Guru Session with Gruden? That kid is a natural born leader in the huddle. He in not so many words tells his WRs to “STFU and listen. I’m the goddamn QB. You do what I say.”

Charlie Sheen would have drafted this kid: WINNING!!!

    • Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

He’ll be leading from the bench. Probably a future coach.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

He may start a game in 6 years.

      • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Good chance he starts this year after that slenderly built mook, RG III gets injured this year. Trust me on this one — fans in D.C. will be thanking their lucky stars that they drafted Cousins in the 4th rd.

        Did I mention WINNING!!! ?

  50. phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

This is fun and all but it’s 12:45 AM over here and the Niners may not pick ever again but anyway I would like to see Denny’s head explode that would be good but naw not staying up. I’ll check back and see what they got in the 9th round with their 17 picks. Yahooooo………..

  51. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Dennis, regardless of what you think, the teams has pretty good depth now. They don;t need to fill a lot of weak spots.

  52. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

The Niners traded up for Joe Looney? Missed that. Figured of all the spots they do need depth, RG is it. Trading for future picks is a good idea. They can restock the defense next year.

    • phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

According to Skeebs before trading up for Looney with our original 4th and one 6th we got:

“Net result of our 3 trades: for our #92 (3rd) we got 5 picks in return: two 6th rounders plus 3rd/5th/6th rounders in 2013.

Lots of ammo to restock da D next year. We’ll be okay

  53. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

I like the Niners draft so far.
They obviously needed another WR in camp –, preferably a guy with pure speed and separation.. Jenkins. Check.
They had no playmaking, fast as crap, Sproles-like back. James. Check.
They needed another OL that can compete for Snyder’s spot, or backup in general, but with virtually all first and 2nd rounders on the OL now and needs in the hands positions, didn’t need to break the bank to get one. Looney in the 4th. Check.
The defense is set and has decent backups, so maybe trade some lower picks for more picks next year when the defense will probably need shoring up somewhere. Check.
Pick up anything else needed on either side of the line or STs via post-draft free agency. Check.
I think they did a very good job so far. Offense is now upgraded, which was key, especially at WR, their biggest offseason need, and a blazing scatback type with breakaway speed.
This team will now be more balanced, in a good way, than it has been at any time since Garcia was still QB. It was balanced for a few years there — especially under Ericcson — everything was garbage…

  54. phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

Snarkk: ” It was balanced for a few years there — especially under Ericcson — everything was garbage…”

Yeah sometimes ‘balance’ is over rated when it’s well balanced crap. Man we have come a Loooong ways since Ericcson, Nowin, Simpletary. We got a great GM, great HC players want to come here and perform for, good coaching staff, players, fine cheerleaders. Now that’s balance…

    • Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

With Phil fan cheering away, how can anyone lose? Niners are Winners!

      • phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

Correct Nip, don’t take no stinkin’ wooden nickels…. You guys were all sleeping when the draft started this morning so Denny and I had to carry on sorta kinda.

  55. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

Joe Looney was a 4 yr Starter at Wake Forest all at LG but played some RG in practice, and said no problem at all switching to RG in the Pro’s.Nice size at 6’3 318.He likes to get after guys and smash LB ‘s on Sweeps. ME LIKE HIM ALREADY.

Looks like a solid pick to praise some Looney Tune characters.,and not a pick that ends up in the Looney Bin.
