The 2012 Draft ! ! ! Brought to you by Ambien

Well, the overhyped meat festival brought to you by the folks that bring you endless nonsense anyway, ended with raving lunatics just trying to get their yowling screams heard on television. Kinda weird watching the later rounds of the draft on ESPN while the drunken leftovers of the weird underclass of fans who come out to watch the thing in the first place were down below careening around empty tables and screamong maniacally. The talking heads on the floating platform paid them no mind, almost as much as they paid no mind to the selections being made.  What starts out as kind of an exciting idea pretty much loses steam by the end of round 2. Once the big names are gone, we have about 200 selections of huh? It was starting to look like Part II of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Anyhow, you can peruse the 49ers picks on the right side of the blog here. Most notable about the first 2 picks is the speed factor. Short of Kendall Hunter, the disappearing Kyle Williams, and Ted Ginn, there is very little speed at the skill positions. At least USABLE speed (Kyle can’t get open and Ted can’t catch). So the 49ers used their 1st pick on AJ Jenkins. A very fast WR who racked up 1,271 yards his senior year in college at Illinios. He has giant hands, is fast, and appears to run routes well. He looks to be a contributor from the get-go. The 2nd round pick turned out to be a guy that Jim Harbaugh is very familiar with in LaMichael James. He was a very prolific runner for UFO, and is the small, quick back that this team sort of has in Hunter, but he can return kicks and be all over the place using that speed. A couple pf very nice picks in my opinion. They give the team a much needed boost of speed at WR and RB that they didn’t previously have.

The rest of the picks. Huh? They got a couple O linemen, Slowey and Looney (sounds like a crappy comedy team), an ILB in Daruis Fleming, Safety Trenton Robinson, and a very interesting pick in Cam Johnson, a highly rated DE who’s stock fell dramatically, as he was thought to be a late 2 to mid 3 pick. He’s in the mold of a young VD. A training room hero who seems to have motivation issues. Baalke also gained 3 picks in next year’s draft, in rounds 3, 5, and 6. Pretty deft manuvering. He got what he wanted (speed and depth), and still turned it into additional picks for next year. Pretty soon the league will be singing this guy’s praises. After the Niners win the Super Bowl this season. Young Sir Alex? Well, I’m sure the nattering nabobs will say a trained monkey could have won it with this team.

Looney was highly wanted on Baakle’s list.Even moved up to get him as other teams sought him out.Slowey a Center gives them depth as well as Goodwin is the old guy on the line at Center.Nice picks!

  2. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, like I said, they are going to have to take this guy seriously pretty soon. He got what he wanted, and parlayed that into 3 more picks for next year.

I’m also interested to see how the new GM in Indy does. Grigson is a guy I liked when the Niners were ‘searching’ for a GM most recently. Hard to go wrong with Luck and Fleener, but that team needs a lot of help, and it looks like they got it later as well.

  3. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

    A trained monkey is underrated.

  4. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Well some guy over on the Bleacherreport rated all 30+ teams drafts, gave the Niners a C+, for choosing Jenkins as their first pick. says there were better players to choose from.

  5. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

The guys over on the Bleacher Report don’t know their head from their ass. C+? That’s preposterous I gave the Niners a C-..

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    Of course you do, skippy.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Getting what you want and getting 3 picks next year really sucks.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Actually, my math is faulty. They have 3 traded picks, one from the Taylor Mays dela last year, and 2 more compensatory picks for a total of 13. Looks even better.

  9. philippinefan's avatar philippinefan says:

After a dismal decade squandering the legacy of the first Niner Dynasty and wandering around in the wilderness led by clueless morons the Niners are set to reclaim the heritage bequeathed them by the legends of yore. Except for a few truly committed (5150ed) grinches like “No Sun in Del Mar, ever” we be stocking up on dark glasses and gazing at a bright bright future.

Give credit to the QB? To da coach? How ’bout the GM? Not in the land of no sun. But fer the rest of us noble lads why fuck yeah! All credit given. That’s normal…

  10. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

All I really get want to know is do all the players they drafted have what all the scouts require “Fluid Hips”?

    • phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

I always wondered about that too but was afraid to ask anyone. Thanks fer bringing it up. Only time I got fluid hips is when I flop down in my Lazy Boy and scrunch around to get comfortable. This happens often

Also on the subject of unaskable questions: How does Skeebs know Chucks feet stink? Chuck denies this of course. Will we ever know the truth?

Not had enuf coffee to absorb this but for our GM skeptic out there here is what Baalkebaugh wrought in da draft: Per Sando’s blog http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest

The San Francisco 49ers parlayed the 92nd and 125th picks in the 2012 NFL draft for the 117th and 180th choices, plus 2013 selections in the third, fifth and sixth rounds.

That had to be one of the better value plays in the 2012 draft, the 49ers’ own little penny project.

The fun began when the 49ers traded the 92nd pick to Indianapolis for the 97th choice and a 2013 pick in the fifth round. San Francisco then sent the 97th choice to Miami for the 103rd and 196th picks, plus a 2013 sixth-rounder. The 49ers then sent the 103rd choice to Carolina for the 180th choice and a 2013 third-rounder.

Finally, the 49ers traded the 125th and 196th picks to Detroit for the 117th choice, which San Francisco used for Wake Forest guard Joe Looney.

The chart below shows what the 49ers gave up and received each step of the way. I’ve underlined the 49ers’ original choices in the left column and the choices they kept ultimately in the right column. Those picks represent the net exchange.

The 49ers already have Looney and the 180th choice, Michigan State safety Trent Robinson, to show for the trade. They also have those three additional picks in 2013. That means they could get five players for two choices.

Where Miami, Carolina and Indianapolis finish in 2013 draft order will influence the value San Francisco ultimately receives in return. Those teams had losing records last season.

Dropping from 92nd to 117th and from 125th to 180th was the net price San Francisco paid for these moves. Those drops represented a combined 98.6-point drop on the standard trade-value chart, which equates to roughly the 100th overall choice in the draft.

Put another way, it’s as though the 49ers had said, “Hey, we’ll trade you an early fourth-round pick this year for third-, fifth- and sixth-rounders next year.”

    2012 NFL Draft: 49ers Parlay
    49ers give 49ers receive
    92 97, 2013 5th
    97 103, 196, 2013 6th
    103 180, 2013 3rd
    125, 196 117

  12. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Yeah Branch has a nice article in the Chron on this, depending on how well those teams do next year could determine where those picks are. From the article

Those 2013 picks could be high selections in each round. The combined record of the Colts, Panthers and Dolphins last year: 14-34. If Carolina doesn’t improve from last year’s 6-10 record, its third-round pick will probably be a top-75 selection.

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Only the Dolphins should remain hapless of those teams, Kevin. Carolina and Indy will improve over last year. If Carolina could play defense, they are a playoff team. Indy? Hard to say with all the changes they are trying to overcome. But, If Harbaugh is any indicator, a given team CAN turn their fortunes around pretty quickly. Indy has some talent, and they picked up some good shit in the draft. So they could very well be in the playoff mix.

    Spitblood – Unca stinks.

I love what John Harbaugh just said. He criticized the Patriots for Spygate and said Belicheat’s legacy was tainted. I love it. John Harbaugh has come to the aid of Jim Harbaugh on a number of occasions – like a good brother should. When Jim hurt Schwartz’s feelings, John was there in the media defending his younger brother. Jim should now do the same thing for John.

On ESPN Teddy Bruschi was heard defending Belicheat, saying the knock just made him and his fellow players play harder. But that’s not the issue – way to sidestep, Teddy. The issue isn’t whether Belicheat’s teams were good. The soul issue (in my mind), is whether or not the spying gave the Patriots a ring against the Rams. That’s it. Nothing else. If Belicheat hadn’t video’d the Rams and Mike Martz, would Belicheat have been prepared to take Marshal Faulk out of that Super Bowl like he did? I don’t think so. And now, with all the hype around BountyGate, with picks being levied and coaches being banned from the league, Spygate looks like the league just swept that one under the rug because of money. It not only tarnishes the Patriots, but it also tarnishes the league.

John Harbaugh is strong enough to attack that, and rightly so. Hats off to John. But Jim Harbaugh should jump on board. Jim Harbaugh should defend the legacy of his fellow mentor – Bill Walsh. If anyone has the reason to do it, it’s Jim, not John. And Bruschi and other fellow Patriots know they don’t have a leg to stand on. The only thing credible in my mind that Bruschi could have done was attack John by saying, “Don’t criticize until you have a ring.” That’s all Bruschi could have said, but Teddy didn’t partly because he likes his job at ESPN, and partly because John Harbaugh is right. And Jim should pile on. Jim should further work to weaken the Patriots. What’s more Machiavellian? Not criticizing and hoping it doesn’t provide further fuel for the Patriots’ fire, or criticizing, hoping it finally wears Belicheat down and he loses heart as an older coach. I say it’s the latter. I say criticize and make Belicheat feel the pain. He did, after all, video tape an opponent days before the Super Bowl. If the league won’t fine ’em, or discipline ’em, the court of public opinion should fry ’em.

      Before Chuck bans you again>>>>

It’s a pity we did not play the Patriots in the Super Bowl last year. Our defense would have shut down the Patriots better than the Giants did. The Patriots are like those players still going to Pro Bowls in their 30s on their old reputation… but really, they’re not what they used to be. The Patriots could be beaten by at least four teams in the NFC at this point.

      • Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

        Chuck’s passed out….

The AFC is weak. The Patriots would never have made the Super Bowl if it wasn’t for a weak AFC.

And on another note. Grant Cohn is the world’s biggest idiot. That kid has no future in the business. It’s one thing to have a father who’s a knucklehead, but when the son follows suit, it’s bad. The son should try to be his own man, not create a moronic tandem of whine. I wrote on there…. ” Grant is the product of artificial insemination and Lowell was impregnated.” I’m pretty sure I’m not welcome back…… Carter.

Damn straight NE’s Super Bowls are tainted. Just as NO’s will be going forward. Maybe Goodie Goodell feels as though he didn’t come down hard enough (really?) on NE in hindsight, so he lowered the boom on NO. His whitewashing of spygate aside, it was a pretty big deal. Learning a team’s signals is a big help, eh. Much like the Raiders paying Gruden in the Super Bowl (for different reasons) because TB’s D knew what was coming, and took advantage. NE had the same advantage.

BUT, it’s ancient history. Besides, Bruschi isn’t going to go after his head coach. Not in a million years.

    And, PS. Adios . . .

Regarding the RBs and drafting James a commenter on Pro Football talk said:

LaMichael James heads to San Francisco

“I would say with so many backs now, it would be pretty cool if Harbaugh and co. ran a version of the Double-Wing Offense with James and Hunter as the Wing backs and Gore as the tail for maybe a play or two a game.

This tells me they might be pretty high on Kilgore and converting Boone to Guard in order to take over.”

Lots of screen passes to LaMichael James in our future? 3rd down efficiency bound to go up with Hunter/James in there behind Kilgore/Looney/Boone on sweeps. Whaddaya think?

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Boone’s only about 305. He’s pretty small to play RG. Frankly so are Kilgore Trout and Mr. Person. They are all ~300 lb. Interesting to see how they play this.

    • phil fan's avatar philippinefan says:

Yeah I see what yer saying. I imagine there’s going to be a lot of shuffling on the OL this pre-season which God knows we didn’t have the luxury of last year.

I see Baalke doesn’t rule out trying Anthony Davis at G either: > from Niners Nation<

"There has been a lot of chatter here about moving Davis inside to the guard position. The team drafted Daniel Kilgore in the fifth round last year and then added Joe Looney in the fourth round this past weekend. Both will get plenty of opportunity to take over the right guard position, but given their draft position, the team does not have a lot of money invested in either player.

If the team is serious about giving Anthony Davis a chance to win the right guard position, it could make for an interesting shuffle along the offensive line. Alex Boone would likely work his way into the starting lineup at tackle. If Davis were to end up winning the right guard position (all a hypothetical at this point), I imagine he would remain the backup tackle with Daniel Kilgore and Joe Looney developing into the backup interior linemen."
