. . . and the pieces are flying off faster than a 1972 Pinto. Trust me. A buddy of mine had a Pinto Wagon that was the slowest car in the world. Well, down there with those old mini-Blazers that Chevy used to put out. The Pinto would shift feverishly between 2nd, drive, and passing gear trying to get to Tahoe. mmmmm-Mmmmm-MMMMMMMMMM-mmm-MMMMMM-Mmmmmm, all in like 3 seconds. Volkswagen Microbuses would be passing us. Motorized wheelchairs as well.
But I digress. Harbaugh has started this free agency period putting back the pieces that made this defense a stout one. And, in response to the fact the Niners play Brady, Brees, E Manning, Rodgers, and possibly P Manning (maybe even 2x), among the usual Bradfords and Skeltons, he felt the need to bring back Rogers, and sign Perrish Cox, a CB with a bit of a history, but is also a good KR. So, the starting defense is intact, and they’ve beefed up the CB spot with Cox and the return of Holcomb.
Offensively? Well, we signed Randy Moss from the reclamation pile/unemployment line. He had a fairly miserable 2010 and promptly retired. He didn’t work last year. Is he coming back hungry? Or merely greedy? Hard to say. The guy is pretty much an enigma wrapped in a riddle wrapped in a mystery. Some guys swear by him, others call him a self-serving malingerer. Since he’s on a one-year deal, there’s little risk to the signing. He’s this year’s version of Braylon Edwards. In other words, expendable. That being said, they ARE looking for more help at WR. Chaz Schillens, one of the decent Raiders, will be in today for a look-see. At 6’4″ and 220, he’s the big WR that Harbaugh seems to favor.
As for Alex? I really figured they’d get this done by now. 4 years/$45 mill is what I said a week ago, and it still sounds right. I suppose they’ll go after JJ if Smith signs elsewhere. If he DOES sign somewhere else, it’ll be a little hard to fathom. I don;t think Cappy is ready, and to start him now would be pretty much caloig the season a trial-and-error period, and the al;ternative at best would be JJ. At worst? Well, there are a shitload of crappy FA QBs, and Matt Flynn. Donovan McNabb? Kyle Orton? Jason Campbell? Kyle Boller? Gross Rexman?
Bleeeech. In other words, there isn’t a compelling reason not to sign Smith, unless he’s really pushing for elite QB money. If so? Oh well. I don’t think anyone else goes to the moon for him. But, hey. Seattle is the team that could pull the trigger on him. If Smith is hell-bent on testing the market, he may be disappointed. And come back.
If Smith wants to go let him. I don’t think Harbaugh is too concerned.
Jason Campbell is now a backup in Chicago and one year deal to boot. His career is falling…..fast.
If he tests the market and finds no takers, that gives the Niners the edge in what they will offer him second time around. Dangerous move if you ask me. I still think Smith will be a Niner. the Moss signing is a wait and see. But yeah the niners need to load up on WRs, i think they should do it through the draft. Balke on KNBR last night still believes Crabs can be an elite reciever. He said he looked at the films and Crabs was getting open in the Giants game, ball just wasn’t getting to him.
Orton and Jason Campbell are now backups. to the Bears and Cowboys respectively.
That leaves Flynn, Smith, and Manning as the remaining top guns.
Uh, vice versa. Ortron signed with the Cowboys.
Not having the game tape, it’s hard to say what the hell Crabs was doing. That being said, the couple times they showed Smith from behind him to show the downfield stuff,. Crabs wasn’y looking for the ball either time. Smith was breaking contain, and Crabs was looking downfield, not at his QB. He’s never been very adept at slants or hot-reads.
Still think a lot of this has to do with the fact that he’s never been through a pre-season before. If he has another mysterious foot injury forcing to miss another camp, he’ll be spinning his wheels for another season.
If they lowered their offer because Smith took a look at the market and found it unappealing, they would be showing even more of a lack of judgement after their surprising 2011. The three year offer was an insult, if they lowered it even more, you can book 7-9 right now.
Brandon Lloyd is en route to SF for a visit.
They better “NOT” be serious about sigining that freakin A hole Brandon Lloyd.Once was more than enough!
Wow, Meratroid gets a 7 year, $132 mill deal from Deeetroit. $60 mill guaranteed.
Yowza.
Well, the players in the QB race are Washington, Tenn, Seattle, Miami, and AZ. The top-flight QBs left are Manning, Flynn, and Smith. I think nothing happens until Manning signs.
I’m surprised a little by Orton taking the Cowboys job, seeing as he views himself as a starter, but he’s likely banking on the Boys finally souring on Romo and getting a shot that way.
I just read that Manning says it’s the Titans or Denver.
To consistently complete the deep ball, the receiver must:
1..Create separation
2. Run and complete the expected route
3, Look for and catch the ball
Smith has the rep of not being able to throw the deep ball, yet he consistently has completed them to Davis. His wide outs nearly always fail at one of the 3 basic tasks listed above.
Mario Manningham is talking to three teams about coming aboard. One of them is SF (the others are Miami and Buffalo).
Wouldn’t mind that at all.
No 1 is the biggest problem with any of the WRs for the past 3 years.
Flynn is supposed to be visiting Seattle this week , Henne also. Most of the talk about Alex and the Seahawks is the ill advised theory that If Alex can play as he did last year, then why can’t Tarvaris?
It’s astounding how much skeptism there still is about Smith and it boils down to one simple reason: those still hating on him are people that just cannot come out and say three litlle words:
“I was wrong”…
I’m thinking that description applies to you. One must be delusional to keep saying any losses or problems in the passing game are due to everything and everyone but Alex while keeping alive the false notion that Alex owns the win/loss record for the season that you insisted belonged to the team, not Alex, heretofore.
Do you know where our passing game ranked last year? That involves the QB doesn’t it? Where’s all the interest in our “elite” and “brilliant” QB now that he’s a free agent?
No team is going to coddle Smith like Harbaugh. He would have to compete for his job anywhere else. And every other team in the league has eight years of tape on Alex’s pedestrian skills and efforts.
What has Alex ever done to earn such blind support from you? Get injured and have his feelings hurt? It’s pro football.
If the measure of success for another QB coming here is a Super Bowl, as I think you stated earlier, it’s the measure of Alex, too. Here or on another team. Maybe just a passing game in the top 50% would be a more realistic goal.
Whatetver, nice to hear from you. You need to get over your hatred, thoiugh, it’s bad for your ticker,
You’ve turned the W/L issue around, very dishonest of you- it was you haters who assigned the 19-31 record totally on Smith and then the 13-3 on the team.
I’ll discuss the many other holes in your post another time.
I’m surprised Seattle isn’t making a push for Smith.
Carroll would love to beat his nemesis with his former QB.
Maybe they’re conducting secret talks along the lines of “We’ll beat the 9ers offer no problem. Go out there and find out what any other teams will give ya, then come back and sign our top contract”. That and as someone said the market is waiting to see what Manning gets from Titans or Detroit before guys like Smith commit.
Titans or Bronks
Poor Fear even missed the point about the Super Bowl. A QB succeeding Smith will have to go farther than Alex took them- farther is getting to the Super Bowl.
Saying passing yards is the only measure of paasing game success is too ignorant to be worth my time discussing. It’s like ignoring ERA, WHIP, BB/SO ratio for a big league pitcher…
When you’re still trashing the guy who made what is documented as the greatest 4th quarter comeback in playoff history and came within two bothced punt returns of the SB, threw 5 TD 0 INT int the play offs. had a higher QB rating than both QB’s he faced in the two games…you’re a deeply disturbed camper. Send me an E-Mail, I have access to meds that will help you..
NoFear, the Niners are a running team, remember?
The point being, when they needed Smith in the playoff games, he responded.
Take awy the turnovers by ST, and the Niners are Super Bowl champs. Say what you will about E Manning, but Smith had the bigger plays in the NFC Champiojnship game.
Remember when you said coaches shouldn’t tailor their systems around their QBs?
Look at the difference between 2010 and 2011 for Alex Smith and the foryunes of the 49ers..
Connect the dots, skippy. I’m sure you can pull that off.
Fear is still smarting over Nolan’s firing. That’s all this is about.
He sure looked good in a suit!
Well, he’s still smarting over Young getting the nod over Joe . . . and Brodie over Mira, for all intents and purposes . . .
And Mira over Spurrier…
There were 40 free agent quarterbacks available, and Niners have 2 QBs. Since Smith’s success was due to Harbaugh, why did they offer Alex anything at all? Surely Jim could do it for 1 of the 42, anyway..right?
I see everyone is getting along. No bleeping……how polite!
Adam Snyder signs 5 yrs deal with Arizona…
Now no better time for the 49ers to pounce on my guy CARL NICKS ALL PRO GUARD!!!!!!!They need to go all in with him.Local guy, born in SF,Get ex teammate Goodwin to get involved ,make a call, text smoke signals for all i care.
He’s matured. He’s better now…
That was meant for Kat’s early post re: Lloyd. I’d take him now, he’s pretty good…
