The 49ers invited Randy Moss for a workout this morning, and promptly signed him this afternoon. No details on money yet, but I’m sure it’s incentive-laden, as he didn’t play a down last year, and had some troubles in his last stints with NE, Tennessee, and Minnesota in 2010. Randy has a very strange affliction known as don’t-care-itis. It can strike at any time, and usually leaves baffled and pissed off teammates and coaches in his wake. He still likely has decent speed, and his size is still impressive. Frankly, I think this has more to do with getting a deep target for Alex Smith. And the Niners showing Smith that, hey, we’re getting you a new shiny weapon. And I also see Smith signing before the 1:00 pm PDT deadline tomorrow.
What COULD happen is I still think Seattle may come in with a big offer to Smith should he hit the free agent market. Smith and the 49ers keep saying how they are in agreement with everything, but the deal ain’t done. And Smith could very well take less to go with the Hawks. Spite? Long-held animosity? Still pissed at Teflon Mike? Who knows? Until the deal is done, he’s still unsigned. It bothers me some, because the alternative is either a very raw Cappy, or someone like Josh Johnson. A fair-to-poor replacement. I would hate to see it come down to that, but no one knows what is on either side of the table at this point money (and guarantee) wise. We’ll see soon enough.
Let’s just hope his stay on this side of the bay is better than his stay on the other side . . .
Was Randy aware that Harbaugh won’t be the QB throwing those deep routes this fall?….
POTD . . .
I think the hope is more that Moss will actually finish a deep route before he starts looking for a place to lay down..
Why do even folks who are the most cynical of everything else suddenly believe anything an athlete or coach says? Especially at contract time- there is virtually ZERO truth in what the parties say.Suddenly Alex says he never asked for more than 3 years? If you believe that you’ve sent money to the Queen of Nigeria this year. If he’s willing to accept three it’s because they pulled a take it or leave it- which completely explains why he might see what happens in Free Agency. He’s a smart guy- he’s not burning any bridges because he may not get a better offer, at least from a decent team -but if he’s looking tomorrow, it means he’s not a happy camper. No matter what happens now, the Niners already fucked it up. No one is going to be real happy. If they’d given him the 5 years with a bust out clause, everybody would be raising their glasses…
Whenever I have heard Moss in an interview he is always wellspoken and sounds like a grounded reasonable guy. That is probably why he confounds teammates and coaches when he ultimately stops giving a shit. I think Harbaugh is whacky enough to keep him on his toes and he has a good year and moves on.
I’m hoping he’s hearing Father Time knocking on the door and wants the Ring badly enough to take that last opportunity to finish his career with a devoted effort.
He’s facing alot of familiar opponents with us by virtue of the schedule makers.
NFC North and AFC East –
The Moss thing is low risk, high reward. The only problem I see is it might somehow dissuade a younger FA receiver that would get a longer deal from coming here because he’ll assume Moss will be snagging a bunch of passes he might be otherwise getting. But, since it’s a one year deal that I’m sure the Niners can throw over the transom easily ala Braylon if Moss doesn’t pan out, that might not be much of an issue. But, you’ve got to be skeptical of what’s left. If Belichick axed him, and they had Brady to get the ball to him, I’ve got to believe there must not be much left in the Moss tank, and that was over a year ago. Hopefully he’s seeing Bartolo Colon’s stem cell specialist in the Dominican…
Signing low lifes like Moss has traditionally been the Raider way. There’s plenty of risk in bringing in a guy who has quit on his teammates before…
I think there’s risk, but low. I think Harbaugh and Co. are smart enough to see if Moss is starting to stink up the locker room with some of his typical bullshit. And if he starts to do it, they’ll cut him, whether it’s pre-season or mid-season. As long as they’ve got some sort of backup plan — that would be my concern if he makes the team. Late into last season and into the POs they had nothing in the WR cupboard….
Teams are apparently negotiating with Peyton Manning without working him out. He’ll cost millions, and has had 4 neck surgeries. Yet, the Niners had the HC personally work Moss out today, he’s slightly younger than Manning with no such health issues, and surely he’s got a totally incentive laden contract for only a year. Weird…
Yeah, I sure didn’t think anything would come of it, but one year? Why not? Shit gets weird? Adios muchacho.
They just better not bring that punk ass Brandon Lloyd in as well.Moss is enough of a headache. And im not to sure he’s the one you want as a mentor for Crabby. But what the hell I guess, low risk/maybe some reward.
Moss faces a ton of his old ‘Chums’ with us this year.
NFC North and AFC East.
He should have some incentive for them perhaps?
Well., regardless of misgivings, it’s still sort of exciting, having a genuine bad boy…who might actually help VD out a bit… GNight
Take care, TF. No to Lloyd. The’ll dratft now.See what’s around later. Cfrabs is crabs. Moss may actually help, believe it or not.
Incentive for Moss IMO.
NFC West vs AFC East this Season –
And… he gets to see his old pals from Chicago, GB and Minny.
It’s a Farewell Tour of sorts?
Hope it ends with Randy in the Big Easy in a Rout wearing Scarlet and Gold.
Make that Randy in the Big Easy twice – The important one….. in February.
February 2013
This is akin to the A’s signing Manny. Fans that are worrying about team chemistry need not worry. If he starts dogging it or fucking up you just cut his ass. The one thing I want to make sure is that they have a back up plan and then another back up plan. Start stocking the receiving core with at least one stud from the draft and at least one more FA signing.
We can’t have Moss quit and get cut and then be stuck with the same shit from last year….
Moss will be great. His press clippings say so. Anyway if Harbaugh likes the guy that’s good enough for me.
The whole issue of Moss dogging it, IMO that is why Harbaugh was throwing the passes and not A Smith. Harbaugh was probably in his ear the whole time. Letting him know that it was Harbaughs team and if he came in and started fucking it up he would be gone!!
We signed the wrong 35+ yo future HOFer who didn’t play a snap last year.
Try to post only after your thorazine dosage, DTD.
Niners just signed Perrish Cox, DB out of Denver, likely to replace Rodgers. 2 year deal. Ed Donatell, DB coach, knows him from Denver…
Does Donatell know his dating habits? I’d keep the Snarkkettes away from Cox if I were you.
Jesus H. Christ. First Moss, now a dude who beat a rape charge. I would be shocked if we signed O.J. next.
“wouldn’t” more Thorazine please…
Is Leonard Little in shape? These signings are disturbing. How about Jamarcus next?
Not signing Manning and getting Moss is the best vote of confidence for Alex yet. Harbaugh knows what a stir a Manning signing would make, he knows it would make them SB favorites. He also knows that in fact, Alex is the best QB for this team and he’s trying to get him the tools he needs. I’m really hoping Manning goes to Denver and we can hear the hilarious cries from the Mile high stands as Manning goes Pick-6 again! “T-Blow! T-blow !T-blow !T-blow !T-blow !”
Brandon Marshall traded from the Fish to the Bears. Reports were that Manning wouldn’t choose Miami because of Marshall. Interesting…
Colston just re-upped with the Saints. He’s off the board…
Josh Morgan — reported gone to the ‘Skins. I guess he didn’t have a lot of love for Alex.
I suggest the Niners pick up some more WRs, soon…
“I guess he didn’t have a lot of love for Alex.”
That’s a ridiculous and unsupportable assertion.
I guess Vincent Jackson didn’t have a lot of love for Rivers, eh? Freeman was the better choice for him?
“A sixth-round pick in the 2008 draft, Morgan, 26, had developed into a reliable target for quarterback Alex Smith. In their final nine games together, Smith had a 125.7 rating when targeting Morgan, completing 28 of 36 passes for 482 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.”…
Morgan is from Washington D.C.
Hmmmm..it is time to be thinking about Josh Johnson yet? Niners still insisting it’s a done deal with Alex if he wants it. Maybe he wasn’t as thrilled with 3 years as he said..
BTW, Smith was not allowed by rule to throw to Moss. If anyone wants to chasllege this , it costs money for a link. Or try something novel, look it up.
Who said Alex didn’t want to throw to Mossy?
Anyhow, Alex Smith signed a one year deal with the Browns . . .
The TE, that is. . . .
Didn’t say he didn’t want to throw to Moss or that anyone said he didn’t want to- it was responding to the POTD. Just as the details about Morgan were in response to another dumb post..
WR Josh Morgan agrees to five-year deal with the Skins. Worth up to $12 million with $7.5 million guaranteed. Costanzo’s apparently gone as well.
For supposedly wanting to keep the team together, they sure are letting pieces fly off.
None of them want to play with Alex so they’re signing criminals and reprobates who have no choice..
Like most fans, I was fully aware that Smith wasn’t allowed under the CBA to throw to Moss, hence Harbaugh did. If you don’t get that as part of the joke, then get some humor counseling…
You obviously were unaware that Morgan is from D.C. and had had great success with Alex, no reason at all to think you know anything about the rule I cited.
It was all over the blogs and the usual writers. Look it up.
Get real, and come down off your high horse. You’re not the know it all you claim to be, not even close…
So why would you make the dumb ass remark inferring he left because of Alex…that’s not a joke, it’s just stupid.
You don’t think anything I ever say is correct, smart, or amusing, regardless of context, regardless of topic. You are consistently in love with your own opinions. Others seem to disagree often with both of those POVs. BF is quite correct in finding you have difficulty with sense of humor, which is a particular deficiency in posting on blogs, IMO. This isn’t rocket science here, nor are we solving the worlds ills. I believe you constantly attack my positions or jokes because I don’t kiss your ass. When I agree with you, I say so, often getting an insulting retort nonetheless for the trouble. Whatever. March on to your own drummer, as will I…
Well. he’s also correct in saying I don’t like you because you are negative and cynical. You’re a smart man, I would like to like you. It’s not an easy task.
Fine, perhaps we understand each other a bit better.
Onward and upward…
Looking at your response again, it’s hard to tell which of your dumb comments you are defending..
Hey, Morgan’s gone to DC, Moss is 35, Ginn is maybe gone, but if he’s still here, he has stone hands, and Crabby can’t get separation. But, look on the bright side. We still have Kyle Williams under contract…. 🙂
Kyle was a favorite here, big time. I had to point out he had a little problem- couldn’t get open.
You had to point out? Criminy. Yeah, I liked Wiliams. Hiowever, as the season went along, it was apparent that he wasn’t doing it. He’s obviously not a red-zone guys due to his size.
It isn’t that hard to figure.
I wasn’t even thinking of you. Most everyone loved him because he wasn’t Ginn. That didn’t work out too well against NY.
I liked him a lot for his speed, and that one smoke screen he ran for a TD against somebody — I can’t remember — he looked great on that run after catch. Then, he started falling, tripping over his own feet a lot, and I started noticing he’s pretty damn small, and yes, he wasn’t getting open. Did I mention he’s small. Then he F’d up those punts. What the hell was I thinking — he’s crap!…
The Costanzo non-signing and twisting in the wind has me a little perplexed. I thought he was a Harbaugh favorite, from the multiple times Harbaugh called him out for Special Teams recognition. He can’t cost that much, and STs is a key to the continuing success of the team, I would think.
To say this is not going as hoped for is not a major understatement. Perhaps there’s a known wife beater to replace Costanzo…
Cortland Finnegan CB of Titans has signed with Rams. Sheezus, the Rams are looking up the next few years with all those picks and a good HC in Fisher on board now…
Carlos Rogers reportedly has just signed with — the NINERs….
Costanzo to the Bears…
3 years, $31 mill for Rogers
OK, if Smith doesn’t sign, who are the QBs who will do better? Better is simple- the Super Bowl. There is no other standard now.
Well, a lot of people think anybody but Alex. The obvious deal is to get Josh Johnson. Will he be better? Don’t know, but Harbaugh knows him well. It’s a huge risk in my book to let this drag on with Alex. Who;s out there? Ortron? Campbell? McNabb? Nothing but shit. Flynn is the only guy who might be good..
The Niners are sure spending on the defensive side of things.
On offense they’ve spent for Moss and . . . . . . . . . . .
Defense first Chuck. Keeps the game manageable.
Where would Brady be if he had one?
We’re going about it right, get value and wait for the chips to be discarded after the replacements arrive.
